WOW!
This is one of the most beautiful combinations of poetry and art. The poem is really quite beautiful. The art is inspirational. I don't knwo that I'd give it to a couple for their wedding though, cause the poem is about a man who is cheating on his wife....So don't take the advice of the other reviewer, the couple might look at you funny!

I'm Impressed
Just got this book and I love it. I purchased it based on reviews that I read and they are 100% correct. Beautiful pictures and a touching poem. Great as a wedding gift.

a beautiful marriage of words and Chagall
If you are a Chagall or e.e. cummings lover, this book is not to be missed. It is an absolute treasure and such a beautiful marriage of words and art! The images perfectly complement the text. Highly recommended, even as an introduction to either of these two artists.

Excellent Insight -a GREAT breifing of MANY Topics
This book is great, should be required reading for every US household.

This is obviously written by people with great knowledge about a difficult set of subjects. What sets this book apart from others is that the authors present the material in a fashion that everyone can digest and therefore come to understand the very complex issues surrounding global terrorism.

The book fully addressed and shed light on almost 40 topics regarding the war on terrorism. It gave me a greater understand of WHY the U.S. is a target, HOW al Qaeda operates, WHO bin Laden is, HOW the US and its allies can and are responding.

Ever wonder about the history of the Arab/Israeli conflicts?, the history of the conflicts in Northern Ireland?, what makes al Qaeda different from other terrorist groups? ...its all in here, and then some.

The book lists more more than 40 terrorist groups operating trhoughout the world, what their "cause" is, and the their bases of operation. It identiifes terrorist orgranizations on each continent, and by country. It gives some detail and information about states that sponsor terrorism, and the complex politics involved in each case.

Overall, the book is a "must read." It really gave me a clearer understanding of the global politics in play when it comes to the issue of terrorism.

Great detail and facts about:
What IS terrorism -its defined in many ways, this book clarifies why different countries and even different parts of the US gov. define it differently.

The al Qaeda organization and its global reach,

Terrorist operations in: Africa, Middle East, Europe, Latin AMerica, Asia, etc.

Terrorism and International Law

and it even presents a balanced viewpoint on the hot issue of Civil Liberties.

Overall- I give it 5 stars, and that's because I couldn't give it 6.

To the authors -GREAT job!

FANTASTIC!
This book is exactly what I was looking for. It is well-written, clear, comprehensive, interesting, and very insightful. I learned more from this one book than from two months worth of newspapers, magazines and TV news programs. I give it my highest recommendation, and encourage every American to buy it!

Clear, concise and expert--read this now!
This book is an excellent study of the all too timely
issue of international terrorism. Unlike much of the coverage
of the tragic events of September 11th, and of
other terrorist atrocities in the past, it provides a scholarly, but highly accessible, account of the wider context of these events, including the history of terrorism and the search for a working definition of the term.
It also provides a concise history of the major terrorist organisations, and also clearly lays out the range of possible responses in the international community to the threat
of terrorism. This book packs a great deal into a relatively
small, and very readable, format--take the time to read it and you will not only be better informed, but also provoked to think more deeply about this crucial contemporary issue.

Highly Recommended!
In 1978, the legendary rock band The Who asked “Who are You?” In this book, Marc Marsan asks the same question but adds the clause “When Nobody’s Looking?” Unlike The Who, Marsan actually has an answer to the question he poses. You are, he says, the sum total of your genetics and environment plus your personal push. But Marsan is also smart enough not to get down into the gutter with the nature vs. nurture debate. He is really interested in how you move past your genetics and environment to chart a course that brings out your potential for genius. In this sense, he is asking everyone who reads his book to return to childhood, when they felt free to live, love, and learn. But he doesn’t offer just platitudes; he recommends concrete steps to help you make this trip, like advising you to study your family history and examine your ancestors for traits and talents that could be hidden in you. We ...recommend thisbook to any person who needs a little shove toward self-actualization. Executives, managers, human resource professionals, and students will find this book easy to read and immensely useful.

Waiting for a book like this
I would like to thank you for writing this book. I first found out about it through the Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper in the book section, the title caught my eye. It represented exactly the question that I've always asked myself, "who am I when Nobody's looking" and why don't I show that side of myself to others.

This is the first book that I have read, (and I read many books!) that stressed finding that creative side again, as we were when we were children. I felt your energy come through, throughout the entire book. Your message also taught me how to use my mind to form associations-therefore giving myself more options, which in turn would cure me of that helpless feeling that I sometimes feel.

It was interesting how you tied in genetics to the equation (DNA)..I am very close to my family, and they do have a major influence in my life. My parents, as well as my brother, and my friends, all impact my high concept.

My major concern at this time is working a field that promotes the Spirit. For so long, I have felt restricted in the choices that I have to find a new career. Your association exercise helped here. I enjoyed filling out the high concept exercise.

Perhaps the most difficult exercise for me was to write down my most defining moment. Maybe it's because I don't feel that I have reached that point yet, or maybe because I couldn't pinpoint my "most important" anything at the time. This book carries over into my personal relationships as well.

Your book is better than "self-help" books, in that it is practical. I truly believe that one is a product of what they read--and your book has definitely had a positive effect and influence on me. I have already recommended your book to four of my friends. If it weren't for the title, I may have overlooked it. I'll keep referring to some of the chapters, as I need them.

Thanks again for writing this book and sharing your brilliant ideas and way of thinking with others!

Strength Training for the Mind
After watching Mr. Marsan knock the socks off of the audience during a recent convention keynote address, I left wanting to know more about his concepts, and so I bought this book to see if his engaging concepts and real-life energy translated to the written page. I think the answer is yes. Mr. Marsan is a self-confessed "out of the box thinker," and his book asks the reader to step out of the box as well. One of the biggest strengths of this book is that it gives the reader the opportunity to be an active participant in the material presented. As a result, it helps to read throught the book one time, and once you think you have the "big picture," then go back a second time to participate. Self-help/self-discovery books are hot items in the 90's. What I liked about this book is that each section presents concepts that all lead to personal development, but each section can be taken individually. I didn't have the "where do I start" syndrome when I finished reading like I have had with other books which focus on personal development. For me, the first step is to work on what he calls "your high concept," or personal mission statement. For other readers, they may choose to work on their personal "DNA" (distinct neuron archetype). Also, Mr. Marsan does not ask the reader to do anything that he himself has not done. The book is full of real-life, sometimes painful, sometimes very funny anecdotes. Having had the opportunity to see Mr. Marsan speak, I can tell you that his wit and sincerity seem to be genuine. Lastly, I think the title of the book is the best way to think of its message and what it is attempting to help people with: Try and be the best person you can be for its own sake and reward - live with purpose and don't compromise yourself. Readers who are driving down the road of personal development should enjoy this book.

Want to change your world??? Change your thoughts...
This is the most awesome cassette. I had read the book. But this audio cassette is wonderful to listen to in the car during your commute, or in the house while cleaning etc. I listened to it every day for over a month and my life was transformed. I continue to listen to it from time time to keep me on the right track. Mr Allens voice is also soothing and powerful. The writing is poignant and beautiful. Enjoy. Your life can only get better and better.

"Mind over Muscle, Mind over Matter, Mind over Everything"
That quote is from Denis Waitley's "The New Dynamics of Winning" but it well captures the theme of this book. This book is about the power of one's own thoughts, the thoughts that we truly hold about what is possible, who we are, at the deepest level of our beings, to make themselves come true.
The book is divided into seven chapters, "Thought and Character", "The Effect of Thought on Circumstances", "The Effect of Thought on Healthy and the Body", "Thought and Purpose", "Thought as a Factor in Achievement", "Visions and Ideals" and "Serenity". In chapter 1, Allen writes, "(you) contain within yourself that transforming and regenerative agency by which you may make yourself what you will" (pg 25). One shapes one's own character by the controlled application of thought, will and action. In chapter 2, "...the outer conditions of your life will always be found to be harmoniously related to your inner state" (pg 32). People who love themselves, attract love from others; people who believe they can be sucessful end up causing their belief to come true and being sucessful. Skipping ahead to chapter 7, he writes that serenity is the effect of "see(ing) more and more clearly the internal relations of things by the action of cause and effect, we cease to fuss and fume and worry and grieve, and remain poised, steadfast, serene" (pg 85). When we come to realize that everything we want or fear has certain causes and that to a great extent we have control over those causes, we ceased to be frazzled by external circumstances because we sense a tremendous locus of power within our ownselves to shape our lives, to be the cause of those effects we desire and to stop being the cause of those effects that cause us suffering.
A great book that probably requires some unpacking by the reader given that it is so concise. Highly recommended.

Hits the nail on the head of the cosmos!
This tiny, surprisingly easy-to-read book by James Allen sets you on the edge of your state of being as if by surprise! Stirring, spirit to spirit talk that leaves your life story flashing before your eyes for your re-examination as you ponder its profound basic truths. Upon completing its reading, it left me speechless and in a state of awe (especially due to the fact it was written almost a hundred years ago) that it touched me very deeply at the fiber of my being.

The best book to complement Six Sigma analysis
As a certified Black Belt, I have to perform statistical tests on diverse processes for both manufacturing and service industries.

I have found this book to be the best I know of to be my "desktop guide" when I have any doubt on the method or applicability of a test or tool.

I engourage any and all readers who are looking for a book to help them do Process Improvement or Six Sigma Process Improvement to get this book.

It is well worth the price.

Two thumbs up!!
This book is really great, I reccommend it!

Looks like a good book, but $85?
Why don't publishers bring book prices down? They would then sell more books (so they would still make money), as well as improving the accessibility of the author's work.

Solid Reference for Things IP
Although the large text font (and relatively large price) suggests ulterior motives by the publisher, IP Addressing is a decent reference for subnetting and network addressing.

The language is kept fairly high-level, and most of the explanations are clearly written--if a little terse--with a fair number of tables and charts making the book accessible for both novices and more advanced users alike.

Since there are scant few books out there that are specifically dedicated to IP administration, this book exists as a viable option for system admins and curious readers.

Great for Beginners
Wegner brings a clarity to the topic that I have long been looking for. A great read for those of you who are lost in the maze of TCPIP. Very clear and complete. Great section on routing protocols for beginners. When will Wegner write some more?

Great for Beginners

A New Way to Perceive the Lives of the Artists
Most people can name at least a couple famous artists and cite some examples of their best-known works. But have you ever wondered what's really behind all that painting, sculpting, and drawing? Kathleen Krull's book Lives of the Artists: Masterpieces, Messes (and What the Neighbors Thought) gives an in-depth view into the humor, tragedy, and mystery in twenty artists' lives, as well as the gossip inspired by their peculiar lifestyles. Carefully researched, this humorous biography travels throughout the centuries, offering basic facts along with interesting tidbits and anecdotes about artists from Leonardo Da Vinci to Georgia O'Keeffe and beyond. It also includes interesting backround information behind each one's artistic works as well as creative and eye-catching illustrations by Kathryn Hewitt. This entertaining book allows readers to get to know the world's greatest artists and their artworks through each one's unique and engaging story.
The book is well organized into chapters each focusing on the life of one individual artist. The author skillfully and humorously connects information about artists' personalities, preferences, and lifestyles with how they affected their most well known artworks. It recreates each one's position in history, telling how the artists were seen by the general population in their day, or even their reputation among curious or superstitious neighbors. Readers will be able to see for themselves that famous artists were real people who did mess up once in a while. The author explains a time when Leonardo Da Vinci decided to try out a new painting method, saying, "The technique resulted in disaster...(he hadn't read all the way through to the part that said "don't try this on walls")."
The author's voice helps compliment the content in several ways. Kathleen Krull's words strike a tone that is warm, chatty, and friendly, making you feel as if she were talking with you in the same room. Her gossip extends not only to the basic facts but also to many specific details abou the artists' lives. Showing the passion and tragedy in his life, she remarks about the artist Vincent van Gogh,"Van Gogh imposed a condition of near starvation on himself and would go for days without food so he could afford to buy art supplies." In addition, every sarcastic or humorous comment made on the part on the author helps readers to feel they are getting to know an actual person rather than a cold, vague historical figure.
The author also ensured that the book would appeal to an audience of both children and adults. The words and explanations are engaging and humorous and immediately capture your interest, yet the vocabularly is not too difficult for children. The full-page color illustrations are vivid, clever, and bring to life each artist for the young and old alike. Because the book gives more information about each artist than is generally known, it is sure to benefit and interest a wide range of audiences.
Readers of all ages will definitely become hooked on this fact-filled and entertaining biography. Lives of the Artists: Masterpieces, Messes (and What the Neighbors Thought) retells the one of a kind stories of each of the world's most famous artists, blending historical facts with humor and captivating details. Most importantly it allows readers to recognize each individual artist through an attractive mix of their achievements, lives, and unique personalities.

My six year old and I love this book!
Reading a chapter from this book has become a bedtime ritual for my daughter and me. My daughter happens to be very interested in art and this book gives her an idea of what it's like to actually be an artist. Both the illustrations and text bring these artists to life more than any other childrens or adult book I have ever seen. This is one of the few books that we both enjoy reading over and over again. I wish the authors would do another volume of artists. Meanwhile I'm ordering another book by this author/illustrator combination.

An Amazing Adventure into the Private Lives of Artists
This book would make an outstanding addition to the reading list of any art lover. If you love finding out the gossipy trivia about some well-known and should-be-well-known artists, that this is the book you MUST buy. Really gorgeous illustrations by a fantastically talented artist herself, Kathryn Hewitt

Conventions clearly and concisely explained
1999 Intermediate/Novice Bridge Book of the Year. Each convention is clearly and concisely explained and how it fits into a standard bidding system. Learn how and when to use each and know what your opponents are doing.

Bridge Intermediates' Bible
This is an excellent book for all bridge players, except perhaps for the complete novice. I own about 25 bridge books, and this is the one that I find myself going back to over and over. It's clear, up-to-date, easy to follow, and has just the right level of detail. The examples are very helpful. It covers Jacoby, weak 2 bids, takeout and negative doubles, as well as more sophisticated stuff.

Great overview
I have read a number of books on bidding, and had read about many of the conventions in the book before, but never really felt I could use them. This book does a GREAT job of explaining some of the most important conventions in simple terms.

Mystery
Arthur gets called down the principal's office one day and the principal gives him a large envelope to give to his mother when he gets home. However, because Arthur does not want to get in trouble he does not give his mom the letter until much later that night. All day long Arthur and his friends try to come up with creative ways for Arthur to loss the envelope. I like this book because it teaches the child a lesson, by using ordinary everyday occurrences. I also enjoyed the creative ways the characters made up of how Arthur could loss the envelope. In the end Arthur learns that even if he might be in trouble, his parents can't help him if they do not know what is wrong.

A teriffic book to the beginning of the series
This book has a teriffic, funny storyline. If kids read the books in numerical order, this one is sure to get them inspired into reading Arthur. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Good mystery
I really liked this book because I didn't know what was going to happen until the end. I really thought that Arthur was in trouble. It's a good mystery and you have to read it to find out what it's about. I'm not going to tell you.

Sweet book!
I really thought it was a sweet book. I wonder though, if there was nothing wrong with Arthur's nose, why did the author change it for his other books? It sends the wrong message.

Writing Possibilities!
This new edition of Arthur's Nose is as wonderful as the original, but now it's even more useful to teachers! In the front of the book, Marc Brown has included pages from his original manuscript and shown how he had to edit and revise things. What a great motivator for young writers learning that revision and editing are a part of writing. There is also a gallery of photographs from Marc's own family and Arthur's life over the years. An additional page of fun facts and all of the incarnations of Arthur's nose over the years, as well as a letter to readers, complete the additional pages of this anniversary edition.

Just like Peanuts characters, and others with whom we, or our children, grew up, Arthur's looks have changed over the years. What a great classroom discussion these changes could prompt! I could envision this discussion taking place, with more mature reasoning, from first to sixth grade, and I wouldn't hesitate to use the book as a writing springboard in those same grade levels.

Arthur's First Appearance
Of all the characters that have a book for every first, every problem, every holiday, Arthur is my favorite. Unlike some other series, the Arthur books don't bang you over the head with the moral of the story. It's there, but woven so subtly into the story that you discover it on your own.

When I first saw Arthur in his present incarnation, I thought he was some sort of a mouse. He's actually an aardvark. He looks more like an aardvark in the earliest book. That's the problem: Arthur doesn't like his long aardvark snout.

His family loves Arthur and his nose. But the kids at school, who are all different types of animals, sometimes make fun of his nose, so Arthur decides to change it. He visits a rhinologist (who is a rhino, of course), and tries out different pictures of noses. Would he be happier with a rabbit's nose? A chicken's? An armadillo's?

Finally, he decides to stick with the nose he's got.

It's a great message for any kid who feels a little different. But, look at Arthur today. What happened to that long snout? No matter, he's still my favorite. As author Marc Brown put it in the first book, "There's more to Arthur than his nose."
