Breathtaking photos, wide varitey of beatiful landscapes
I love David and Marc Muench's photography and this book is a treasured addition to my library. The color and production values are exquisite and up to the high standards I expect from Muench.

These photos capture the awesome beauty and fantastic variety in California's natural landscape through the seasons. The book is divided into sections for the mountains, forests & plains, coast and desert.

Muench has brought new life to many often photographed landmarks with his mastery of light and detail. He has also uncovered many beautiful but less known places; dawn & dusk skies, vibrant flowers, delicate waterfalls & more.

James Lawrence's accompanying text touching on a wide range of topics relating to California's natural history is fascinating and entertaining. I have loved spending hours with this magnificent book.

Incredible
This book confirmed my feeling that David Muench is, for lack of a better description, the Ansel Adams of color photography. I already owned his Appalachian Trail book, "Uncommon Places" (I think it's called), but my brother wanted a California-related book for Christmas, so I picked this up, sight unseen. Quite simply, it's breathtaking. The photos span the length and breadth of the state, from Humboldt County's misty redwood stands to the La Jolla coast, to Yosemite and the mountain passes and lakes of the Southern Sierras along the John Muir Trail. There are even a handful of urban photos that make downtown L.A. look quite nice. If ever you doubted that we live in the closest to a natural paradise as there is, take a look at this book, and doubt no more.

Gorgeous Photos
The most beautiful book with California's photos I've ever seen. I have already one book by Muenches and when I so this one I didn't have to open it to make sure it's gorgeous. But it was even better then I expected. It has 4 parts: Mountains, Oak and Grass, Coast and Deserts. So, you are not gonna miss any detail of nature in California (of course poppies, redwoods and spanish moss on the trees are there too). If you want to make somebody going to California give him this book :) I promise anybody will fall in love with California and Muenches' books.

Deltora Shadowlands:The Cavern of Fear: A wonderful thriller
My best friend introduced me to Deltora Quest a few months ago. Quickly attracted by the book I bought the rest of the Quest series the next day. I now read the books over and over. I heard of the new Deltora Shadowlands trilogy, and went to find out more.
A few questions came into my mind.
1.Is this just a cheap copy of the Quest series?
2.Is it going to be as action-packed and wit-burning as Quest?
3.Is the book going to have new or same characters?
I wanted to find out. But, not having access to interviews and technology, I bought and read the book. Two words. WOW!
I loved the book. It flowed and still had the same characters. It had new beasts and new challenges. And was definitely not a cheap copy. And it WAS action-packed. I mean, sword-flying, fists-swinging action. And yet, there was a sense of plan, and wits.
Many side characters were also interesting. Like Glock. Who was a strong warrior and just as stubborn to the end. And Jinks, the plump, stupid man who cares only for himself. And the Goblins. They were very good side characters. Their song still rings through my ears.
Above our land the tumult rages
Struggle echoes throught the ages
There the strife may never cease
But here below we dwell in peace
Where timeless tides swamp memory
Our sunless prison makes us free
The gem-glow lights our rocky walls
And dragons guard our shining halls.
Wonderful. And still the same old loved characters from before. Lief, the new king who is pressured to be safe and silent yet, he is still the reckless adventurer he always was. Barda, the big man who's brain was just as stong as his arms (and my favorite character). Jasmine, the witty, wise-cracking, quick jungle girl. Kree, the loyal raven. And Filli, the small gray fluff always on Jasmine's shoulder.
So, I guess I'm saying that the book is wonderful. I loved it and I hope you do too. It had many funny, exciting, and dangerous parts, and I loved it.

The Excellence Continues
The Shadowlands series picks up where the Deltora Quest series left off. The same characters experience more adventure, excitement and danger as they are faced with another quest of good vs. evil. I really enjoyed the first series and am thrilled to see that Emily Rodda continued the captivating storyline.

A new trilogy to enjoy for Deltora Quest fans
Deltora may now be free of the Shadowlord, but there are thousands of their people trapped in the Shadowlands. The people left in Deltora are demanding a rescue mission, but King Lief knows that it is a suicide mission. The only hope of success lies in the magic of the Pirran Pipe - but the Pipe is long forgotten and is believed to be myth. Lief and his companions must face many new dangers and challenges if they are to free the lost people from the Shadowlands - but the Shadowlords has plans to stop them from succeeding.....

This first book in the new Deltora Shadowlands trilogy was excellent and had to be read in one sitting. Sometimes a second series is a bit boring because it's the same idea in a different place - that doesn't happen with this book! You have Lief and Jasmine from the other Deltora books, but there are other characters to meet too.

Like the first series, this series will appeal to boys and girls of all ages - including their parents. If you like magic, adventure, and danger then you will enjoy these books. It is best if you have read the Deltora Quest series first though - it will help explain the first part of this book.

Human trivia
I love obscure information and trivia, and this book is just loaded with all sorts of interesting things about humans. I loved it.

One of the finest pieces of writing known to man
This book is written in the most amazing way so as to not only fill the reader's mind with amazing information concerning the wonderfuly evolved machine that is the human body, but also entertain. For all its wonderous facts and statistics, it is also written in such a personal manner so as to be actually touching. The writer clearly has a fine understanding of Biology, and uses this understanding to dazzle me each time I read it. If you are lucky enough to find this book, don't lend it to anyone. :-)

I'm unable to put this down.
I wish I could find another copy of this... My Exwife snagged my book in our divorce so now I have to try to find a new one :( If you can help please email me!!! Please!!

How business should work in the next decade
I've always liked Birchard's CFO articles, and his easy to read, detail intensive, style fits the material very well. A provocative business book. Great (first class) airplane reading.

Provocative and thoughtful
Counting What Counts is that rarest of business books -- not the ramblings of a consultant nor the chest pounding of a CEO, but thoughtful and useable advice. Eminently readable, and filled with concrete examples, this book has given me new insights into my role and responsibilities. I'm passing it along to all my colleagues, and recommend it without reservations.

New pivot point for american management
This book is going to change the way people manage American corporations. As CEO of a mid-sized company I've been struggling to apply outdated financial metrics to our business. This is the right way forward.

Diana: Queen of Hearts
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (1997)

This book is for all ages.
As with all my books on Diana, I have read this many, many times. "The Prologue" of this book reads like a fairy tale: "Once upon a time, not very long ago, a beautiful young woman married a handsome prince. He was the most eligible bachelor in the world. She - quite literally - was the girl next door."

This is an extremely well written book about the late Diana, Princess oof Wales. This is one book which can be read and enjoyed by everyone. One can read this book in thirty or forty-five minutes easily. The young people will enjoy it not only because it is well written and easy to understand but because its pictures are in color which is attractive to them.

The marriage which was dubbed "a fairy tale" was anything but a fairy tale. Diana found a way to use her position and privlege to give love and hope to millions of people in need. Whether embracing a baby with AIDS, holding the hands of a leper, or comforting the dying, Diana opened her heart to the world, and the world received her with deep and enduring affection.

Indeed Diana was a princess who did not need a palace to be a true princess.

Story Of a Real queen
Queen of People's Hearts & Soul. Really enchanting and heart breaking.

A great book to read if you're a Princess Diana Fan
This was a very cool book! I'm obsessed with Princess Diana, so I obviously loved it! If you read it, you will learn a lot about her, and probably even feel sad that such a wonderful person has left the world.

Safety with a touch of humor
This "safety guide" is a perfect all around book for parents to read and review with children. The text is simple and covers 1-2 page reviews of common places and events that require safe practice. Topics include home, yard, meals, fire, animals, on wheels, playground, camping, car, beach, trips, first aid, cold weather and night safe practices. The illustrations are humorous and make some of the potentially scary ideas not so scary, yet the book still has a serious tone. The pictures clearly illustrate (and parents can certainly discuss them) what the text is saying for both younger nonreaders and the older elementary age readers. And the dinosaur topic is sure to appeal to a broad range of ages. I have purchased or checked out from the library several specific topic safety books (strangers, fire) but this one is a great addition because it includes many subjects not necessarily worthy of an individual book.

Amazingly Awesome Book
This is a awesome book for kids.First of all it has great safety tips for your children. Also it has cute, funny pictures of dinosaurs. Most important it will educate your kids on what to do in case of a fire or if something happens on a camping trip. This book gives you safety rules for water emergencies to car safety.Plus this book is great for the whole family. So if you are looking for a great book on safety for your kids this book is definitely for you.

don't bogart my scotchguard!
In every generation there is a beacon of hope that blinks through the dark nights of the republican administrations that mysteriously appear like jagged reefs that elude sonor. This is one such beacon that says, "hey, there are still some free minds out here that refuse to be confined! stop watching Survivor, put down that can of Slim Fast, and crack open a book!" THE EMERALD BURRITO should be on every coffee table from Pocatello, Idaho to the farthest reaches uncharted Siberia! This is the real pasport to happiness, so put that prozac in the blender and save it for your next oatmeal bender. So, fellow literary cognicente, this book will love you, even if you're wearing crotchless purple-fuzzy stretch pants and a tin foil sombrero on Alvarado Street, it will love you even after your mouth-breathing budwiser-drinking stuffed animals have gone berzerk with leaf blowers in the back seat of your El Dorado and your pygmy albino house keepers have all converted to catholocism. Go there, without fear or reservations. take a front row seat, put elmer's glue between your toes, chainsmoke generic fish sticks and open up your mind. I mean really, who cares what the neighbors say?!

Apocalypse Oz
What do you get when you mix the magical land of Oz, CIA hijinks, a possessed laptop, occasional dismemberment, fabulous Mexican food, and a hottie named Aurora Quixote Jones? THE EMERALD BURRITO OF OZ, of course! This ain't your daddy's Oz, no question. Instead, it's more like APOCALYPSE NOW meets THE WIZARD OF OZ as directed by Terry Gilliam. Authors John Skipp (of Skipp & Spector splatterpunk fame) and Marc Levinthal (who co-wrote the score for the film VALLEY GIRL) reinvent Oz for the new Millennium, managing to make the fabled land over the rainbow wonderful and surreal and comic and terrifying. GET THIS BOOK!!!!

FanTABulous!
It's a rare thing when the atmosphere in a book seems so real and speaks to me on such a level that I want to find a way in and live there. "Burrito" was like "The Wizard of Oz" on acid. Trippy, dippy, full 'o' fun. The safest form of pure escapism that I've had the pleasure to come across in a loooooong time. One of the things that makes this stellar read so much fun is the character's familiarity, but all twisted up in a whole new light. I especially loved the TinMan, nuff said. The writers really know how to make you see what & who they're talking about, even if you've never seen them or it before. I loved the relationships between everyone and REALLY loved a certain little, oh I don't know what to call him, gremlin(?) and the way he mangled the English language. You know what they say about singers? How only a truly great singer can sing off key? Carol Burnett and her comedy sketches come to mind. Well, this amazing book shows that it's doubly true for writers. I didn't want it end and I wish there was more. Now where's that gate?

I wish this book were more publicized. It's not fancy to look at, but very informative and easy to understand. The difference your diet makes with regards to problems like hypoglycemia and infertility are incredible. Read this fascinating book and start feeling better!

You will want to get this book for everyone you love.
After reading this book I went out and bought 10 more and gave them to my friends and family. It not only tells you what to eat but why. It is easy to read and understand.

Excellent - This book changed my life
After the stress of a divorce, my health began failing. I am young and not over-weight. I decided it was time for some life changes. This book put me on the right track. The information on how to eat healthy made a huge difference in my energy levels and overall well being. The exercise and motivational information allowed me to make positive changes in my life. It is rare to find a book that has the power to change your life. This book did and I highly recommend it. It is very well written and is much more than just another diet book. Anyone could benefit from reading it. It is a new book and may be hard to find, but it is worth it hunting down. I feel blessed to have found it.

A great combination of creativity and information.
This book is a great combination of creativity and information. Kids are smart and this book does not insult their intelligence. The activities are varied and utilize a number of different skills. There really are exciting activities for each and every child out there. Additionally, the activities are fact-based, so while a child is connecting the dots, he/she is also learning a little piece of history. It's a great addition to your child's collection.

A marvelous addition to my early childhood class library!
As an early childhood educator, I find this book to be a wonderful resource for a geography curriculum.

Fantastic! Fun! Educational!
I absolutely loved the Felix Activity Book. I shared it with family members both young and old and with my third and fourth grade students. It exposed children to wordly things that they may not normally have been exposed to until adult age. My students felt like they were actually traveling around the world. They were taking in sites, learning about currency, customs, cutlures... My students got so excited each time I took the activity book out of my closest. They would ask me...Where are we going today???? We can't wait for another edition!!!

Game Wars: The Undercover Pursuit of Wildlife Poachers
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (1992)
Author: Marc Reisner
Amazon base price: $16.00
Used price: $6.95
Average review score:

Great book
Having read Reisner's Cadillac Desert, I couldn't wait to read this. This book is different - and probably more readable to more people. There's more of a defined storyline, and has a more limited number of engaging characters. He follows 3 attempts to protect wildlife from poachers. The style is reminiscent of John McPhee (which I mean as a BIG compliment). If you can find this book, get it!

I can't believe it's out of print!
Simply the best wildlife conservation book around. Follow game warden Dave Hall as he works undercover among good ol' boys in Lousiana, Hell's Angels in Alaska and the mafia in New York City in an amazing, accessible (if you can find it) true story that'll be bound to raise your blood pressure over what poaching has done to our wildlife.

A wake-up call for all who appreciate American wildlife.
Reisner is an exhaustive researcher, who then parlays massive factual data into readable, entertaining (sometimes disturbing) prose. I found Game Wars to be more reader-friendly than Cadillac Desert in that the book moved faster and showed me a very human side of wildlife law enforcement. Through Reisner, I was taken along on numerous exciting U.S. Fish & Wildlife missions, including several life-and-death encounters between federal agents and big-time commercial poachers. As usual, Reisner imparts a sense of what the law is, how it works, and where it needs shoring-up. I would recommend the book to anyone interested in animals, law enforcement, or conservation.
