Communicate or Die: Getting Results Through Speaking and Listening
Published in Digital by Swiss Consulting Group ()
Author: Thomas D. Zweifel

Average review score:

An essential book
Everybody is talking about communication but hardly anyone knows what communication really is about. In his fabulous book Thomas Zweifel introduces the reader to the secrets of skilful speaking and powerful listening, and, not to forget, he makes it fun to read. An essential book! As a professional coach for personal development I recommend it to all my clients!

Communicate or Die
Communicate or Die is a fascinating book. It's well written with concepts that are easily interpreted and understandood by any reader. Zweifel brings to light some of key elements that are usually overlooked and yet crucial to creating harmony and balance in human's daily life. No matter where we all come from, such things like communication, listening, are in fact, what allows us to become members of a civilized society, gives the opportunity to understand the dynamics of our human differences. The truth is, Communication, whether be silent or verbal, or whether be just listening(for I find listening to be also a way of communicating), is indeed, a perfect way to build, bridge, and even more than anything, a weapon to problem-solving, as it is clearly presented in "Communicate or Die"

Let me commend Thomas Zweifel for an incredible work in presenting the essence and the benefit of having "Listening Skills". The illustrations provided in this particular chapter are such an important recipe in terms of showing the advantages of using "Listening skills" as a way to enrich oneself and also making one an incredible leader. For instance, the example of Operah Winfred is particularly a very good one because it touches on the reality of human senses and shows what it means to be a good listener

A book which learn how to prevent communication failures
This book deserves a broad audience. Everybody should read this book. In our businesses and our lives we all have communication failures that could easily be prevented with a little skill; but we are blind in the area. For example, I noticed in the "Business of Listening" section that listening is tough for me as a broadcaster. There are simple things in this 80-page book for each of us - stories, tips and labs - that will greatly raise the effectiveness of our communication. Read this book - it's going to cost you next to nothing to read. You can substitute one evening of entertainment and make a difference in your life and work for years to come.

The Eternal Wisdom of Buddha
The Dhammapada is one of the most popular and accessible books in all of Buddhist literature. In it are the words of Shakyamuni Buddha, which teach that all suffering stems from desire and that the way to attain freedom is to purify the heart and follow the way of truth. This version is rendered by Thomas Byron. His style uniquely captures the Buddha's teachings with both simplicity and lyricism.

Modern wisdom from 563-483 BC
This book fully embodies Eastern thought at it's finest. I bought the pocket version, and now carry it with me everywhere. I feel that most of the teachings of this ancient book are still relevant today. This would be great for people who need a breathe of fresh air, or a new outlook on life. Just reading this book makes ones mind tranquil and serine. The guidlines laid out for everyday life in this book are paramount and would help anyone live to their fullest.

One Of The Most Important Books I Have Read
I think I found this book in WaldenBooks when I was in ninth grade. When the others in my age group were more interested in parties and clothes I was more interested in finding Divine Truth and that is what this book was to me.An awakening and an awareness of many things I had never before understood. The words of Buddha are poetic and truthful.Truths that would make this world a place of beauty to live in.If only more people would read this book and genuinely take what is said to heart.

Highly recommended!
I highly recommend this book by Dr. Linde. It gives the reader a very clear understanding of what it is like to live with cerebral palsy. But more than that, this book is applicable to readers in all situations who have personal misfortune to deal with. The courage, humor, and personal strength shown by the author are an inspiration to all readers, regardless of whether they are dealing with personal infirmities. This book is a must read for special education majors, and could be helpful in occupational therapy training as well. Also a good personal interest book for the general population.

Great book!
I'm lucky enough to know Dr. Linde personally, and he is an amazing person. It was interesting to get to read his book and see life through Tom's eyes; to try and understand what it feels like to suffer from such a horrible disease. Tom has overcome his setbacks and propelled farther than many thought he would ever be able to go. Now, through this book, he can teach all of us.
Read this book. Not only is it a well-written book, but it's important for all "normal" people to try to understand what it may be like to be handicapped. Tom's book does that. It can open your heart and mind.

I Am Not What I Am
This is a compelling book. To understand that a life can be lived fully and with great gusto- even with a serious physical handicap.
The underpinning of life is explored as Dr Linde surveys his life including early childhood experiences and the people that surrounded him with love, care and great strength of will and character.

As a child, Dr Linde, recalls, " On a conscious, gut level, I lived with chronic discontent at my continuing misfortune. I stuffed torrents of anger and pain into my subconscious, where they were hidden from me, but unpleasantly obvious to many who offered me acceptance and friendship." Yet as one reads on, we discover that his life is full of great adventure and relationships, that he overcame many many added stresses and he continues into his 7th decade, to live a full and productive life.

Linde encounters university life, love, marriage and children, career upheavals, hobbies and grandchildren with great enthusiasm and self-motivation. We get to 'see' the view from his wheel chair.

I was moved by Dr. Linde's expression of angst and frustration with societal systems that neither supported him (or others with disabilities) nor were eager to change their way of doing things to accommodate. Imagine in year 2000 still not having wheelchair accessible bathrooms in national chain restaurants.!

I liked this book because of its sheer bravery.

This book is for everyone that would like to open their hearts and minds to understanding the needs both physical and psychological of persons with physical disabilities.

The Single Foremost Work of Catholic Theology in History
St. Thomas Aquinas' Summa Theologica is the premier work of Catholic theology, studied at all major Catholic universities and seminaries, as well as by theologians and philosophers of religion of all denominations. Of St. Thomas' many works, this 5-volume masterpiece presents a systematic and organic treatment of several thousand important theological questions, ranging from God, the Trinity, and the nature of Christ, to the nature and psychology of the human person and the nature and mission of the Church. St. Thomas considers creation in its natural light, as well as under the operations of grace, including discussions of morality, redemption, the sacraments, and the operation of divine providence. The scope of topics is enormous, and these few hardly do justice to the contents.

The format of this work is arranged into individual articles for easy reading of St. Thomas' answers to individual questions, but there is a continuity to the way questions are raised and answered that makes the work a unified whole -- not simply a theological manual or encyclopedia, but also a profound read from cover to cover. A leading biographer of Thomas (O'Meara) has called the Summa "a cathedral of thought," which is perhaps the best description for such a short space here.

This translation has been prepared by the Fathers of the English Dominican Province. This information is not evident in the on-line description, but it should be, since it is very important that the translation of the Latin is accurate and in conformity with modern usage. (I found out by searching the ISBN at the Library of Congress website). There are many translations of the Summa available, but not all are good. The English Dominican Father's translation is one of the best editions available, and widely recommended in scholarly circles.

While the Summa Theologica is available at libraries and on the internet, it is very convenient to own your own copy of such a large work. This edition is sturdily bound with decent margins for notes, with each of the 5 volumes of a portable size and weight. (The earlier two-volume editions are large and unwieldy.)

I heartily recommend this work and this particular edition of the Summa in English

Classic Translation of a Classic Work
The people of his time and culture knew him as "Tommaso D'Aquino." We know him as Thomas Aquinas ... but we also know him as probably the greatest, most systematic thinker that Christianity has ever produced. This five-volume work is the classic Dominican translation of his SUMMA THEOLOGIAE and is probably the most widely used English translation of the work. (As an aside, you may enjoy the encyclical of Pope Leo XIII that sought to rebuild Roman Catholic philosophy and theology on the work of Aquinas; it is included in this edition.) If your love is classic catholic theology, you need a copy of this work in your library. All of Roman Catholic theology was firmly based upon it for centuries and it remains an important foundation for modern catholic theology. Whether you buy it new or get yourself a used copy, you will enjoy the clear thinking process that Aquinas used as he explored the issues and questions of faith. Laid out question by question as Aquinas originally intended, this classic version of his work will endure for as long as the church endures. Though Aquinas seems to have suffered a breakdown at the end of his life and though he pronounced all of his work "but straw," I doubt that you'll agree with that assessment when you venture into this masterpiece.

UNDERSTANDING ATTAINED IN THE SUMMA
WORD HAS IT THAT AN ANGEL HELPED THOMAS WRITE THIS EXTENSIVE WORK WHICH ANSWERS QUESTIONS YOU REALLY WANT TO KNOW THE ANSWER TO BUT DIDN'T THINK ANYONE WOULD HAVE EVER PUT IT IN PRINT. CATHOLICS WILL FIND IT INVALUABLE IF THEY ARE SEEKING REASONS WHY AND WHY NOT, AND IF YOU SHOULD OR SHOULDN'T (HAVE SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE FOR INSTANCE OR SLEEP WITH YOUR WIFE WHEN SHE'S GOT HER FRIEND.) I MEAN ALL SUCH PRACTICAL OCCURENCES ARE CONSIDERED IN THE CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE THAT WILL ENLIGHTEN AND PROBABLY RETURN YOU TO THE FAITH. SUPPORTIVE SCRIPTURE IS FREQUENTLY, UNITINGLY REFERENCED IN THIS MOST THOROUGH WORK OF ART-THIS IS THE HEALING DOCTOR YOU NEED TO READ AND BECOME FAMILIAR WITH.

wow!
Wow.
I picked up a copy of this book the other day and despite being in the middle of 5 or 6 other books, it is this one I keep returning to. Because of the casual tone and informal style, reading it feels as much like a good conversation as a good read. I've enjoyed her writing in the Handbook in the past, but here Ava is given ample room to explore the subjects more thoroughly and enjoyably. And she is able to sustain a level of high energy and interest throughout. Simply amazing to me, given what is usually treated as such a dry and reserved subject.
I have a year old architecture practice in Chicago, teach at U of Illinois Chicago in the Architecture department, and wrestle every day with the issues she describes in the book, whether with owner/clients, my own employees or grad students. If I ever get to reach my dream of teaching professional practice (in addition to the current building science/design) in the coming years, I will certainly make this book required reading. Until then I will set to memory so much of the wisdom therein and spread the word amongst colleagues and clients. What a real joy, to involve myself in the rewarding conversation that is this book.

Better than Getting To Yes
I am not an architect, but I loved this book. It clearly laid out steps real people can take to negotiate tough problems -- whether construction-related or not. The chapter on communication skills and the one on dispute resolution alone were worth the price of the book. In fact, I would say, as a senior manager of a growing business, that anyone who seeks to accomplish anything important in any business would benefit from the information this book contains. It should be required reading for all.

A life-changing book
This book is a must for anyone who desires a closer relationship with God. It is literally a life-changing book and shows how deep contemplative prayer is possible for anyone in any walk of life. It dispels many misconceptions and objections about contemplative prayer: that it is impractical, takes too much time, is esoteric or has nothing to do with everday life and relationships. The author, basing himself squarely on two great masters of prayer, St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, emphasizes that contemplative prayer is a gift of God; we cannot "earn" it or merit it in any way, though we have to make ourselves open to it by trying to live more and more according to Jesus' gospel. It does not depend on techniques (despite what many people think), but God will not give it unless we really want it. Contemplative prayer, a deep imersion in God, as Fr. Dubay so passionately puts it, is the "one thing" of the gospel, the "pearl of great price", yet God wants it for everyone. I don't come across many books that have changed my outlook on life, but this is one.

A call to deep union with God in prayer.
I took over a year to go through this book: reading a few pages, then processing it for several days or weeks. Explaining mystical prayer is very difficult outside of trying to describe the experience, yet Fr. Dubay uses the writings of these saints beautifully for instruction and reflection. He spends considerable time refuting modern critics and cynics by demonstrating the Gospel calls all of us to deep union with God (according to God's choosing). He seems to write about this central theme endlessly; yet, without being verbose or tedious. My prayer life had become very dynamic over the year or so before I found this book. Reading it gave me some way of making sense of it all. I expect to reread it several more times throughout my life.

The Great Tradition
Fr. Thomas Dubay has been able to synthesize the teachings of two of the greatest teachers and mystics in the Catholic tradition. A comprehensive discussion of St. Teresa's "mansions" and St. John of the Cross's "dark night of the soul," this book is also a practical guide for people who want to grow in prayer and in the universal call to holiness. Fr. Dubay is an authority on both theory and practice, and is a much sought-after spiritual director. His explanation of discerning genuine encounters with God versus one's own self-delusion is especially useful in the realm of contemplation, since contemplation is by its very nature not an objective experience. He elucidates the movement from meditation to contemplation and distinguishes it from other psychological states. His chaper on friendship and the development of virtues sets the entire contemplative experience within the context of the goal and purpose of prayer. This is a meaty book, but it is well worth the effort.

I LOVED it
I LOVED this book. Practical, useful, funny, refreshing. I was delighted with the specific suggestions and useful information provided. I could pick it up anywhere, read from anywhere. It's a delight to have a leadership book so accessible.

In particular, the chapters on the change cycle and the benefits we get in NOT changing were especially useful and thought-provoking.

My only problem was everyone who picked up my copy wanted to take it with them.

Lightning in a Bottle: Proven Lessons for Leading Change
...A practical reflection of David's travels through corporations... and life. Lots of very useful and inspiring ideas of what to do and what NOT to do to solve problems in organizations. The book is organized into short, easy to read chapters, each making a key point.

NOT the usual business rhetoric; instead it's based on actual experiences, so it's both funny and packed with learning. Highly recommended!

Terrific
A terrific read. Useful, specific, funny and very, very helpful. I particularly valued the chapters on the change cycle and the benefits people get in not changing.

Maybe the best book on the subject I've ever read. Much more accessible than theoretical texts currently available which I find cumbersome and difficult to plow through. This was a joy.

I only wish my friends would buy their own copy.

The author gets an A, the proofreader fails
Enjoyable vacation reading --- marred mainly by minor distractions: numerous uncorrected typos and/or grammatical errors (the publisher's proofreader should be fired!) and repeated gratuitous references to a well-known coffeehouse chain (a paid sponsorship?)

Really a fun mystery
I loved this book. Griffin reminds me a lot of Patterson, only a lot more fun. Cube 6 is a medical thriller with lots of plot twists and turns. The good guys, Jon Kirk, a repoter for a Seattle newspaper, and Karen Able, a detective with the Seattle police, really come alive. And their romantic encounters are really, really funny. The Sandman, the bad guy, is as scary as they come. Anyone looking for an exciting, fun, page-turner should read this book.

Exciting new author
A woman is found murdered, posed on top of an undisturbed motel room bed. She is lying on her back, naked, with her feet propped together, toes up, and her arms folded across her chest mummy-style. There are no signs of a struggle and there is no obvious cause of death. The killer is named The Sandman because his victims seemingly just fall asleep without a fight.

This book scores a 10! It's a gritty noir with great characters and a really twisted serial killer. Suspense and thriller fans will love it. It's a page turner, and it ranks up there among the best I've read this year.

a superior resource on the subject!
as one of the only sources on the subject (pdas, cell phone, ps2, kiosk, etc) this book is invaluable for the kind of information it presents! the information is precise and up to date (discusses flash 5, and references the MX authoring environment.)

It covers pixel fonts (a huge topic be it for devices or not), content for television, playstation2, using server-side middleware for dynamic applications, using Java for stand-alone stuff, how to go full-screen, and a whole lot more.

there is plenty packed into this well-written book to keep you entertained for months to come. one of the nicer things i found out in this book is not so much what you CAN do on devices, but things you should look out for that maybe you SHOULDN'T attempt on them (that would be taxing on system resources, etc.)

I suggest this for anyone who authors in Flash, for those with Pocket PCs, etc. who want to play around, and also for serious application development authors - this book covers a wide-range of material but does it extremely well.

It's a bit rare to find Flash books on the market that really nail their content and purpose - this is certainly one of them that clearly shines!!! Well done.

This book made us money - what more can we say?
This might not be the sort of application the authors envisioned, but the book certainly helped us! We run a small online casino off the coast of Britain, TheGoldCasino (dot-com), and our development staff is fairly sparse (we're aimed primarily at users of e-gold, so we're not a big operation). We wanted to experiment with mobile games, but we assumed the cost would be prohibitive. Flash Enabled brought our current Flash developers from a state of knowing nothing about the PocketPC to having functional Flash-client prototypes in a shockingly short period of time! I don't know of higher praise for a book like this than: "It changed our business and made us money".

Obviously, it's not yet clear how large the universe of PocketPC gamers with e-gold accounts will be, but this book at least compressed our development time to the point where it is quite easy for our mobile games to be profitable. Great stuff!

Flash Enabled = Flash for Everyone
This is truly one of the few books on the market that looks at Flash from various perspectives and nails it. The contributors to this book keep the chapters focused, provide examples in context and realize that most folks out there aren't "code" geeks; there are both creative designers and innovative developers. The number of devices and platforms commented on and "tips and notes" are great.

You might ask "Where is the CD in the back of the book?", well better than that they have a website for the book and the list of useful URL's in the back of the book is awesome and helps everyone grow their skills when it comes to developing for these evolving platforms. As a Macromedia evangelist I recommend a select few books to the customers and end-users this is one of them.

Perfect gift for kids or adults
I've given at least 5 copies of this book to friends ranging in age from 8 to 50, and everyone I've given it to has loved it. Moomintroll's adventures here are less rollicking than in the earlier Moomin books, but that's in keeping with the wintry setting of the story. Jansson is expert at combining sly, sometimes dark humor with a sense of wonder and delight in the world. The mood is quiet, sometimes somber, but somehow reading this book always makes me feel happy and content. Probably my favorite in this wonderful series.

One of the best children's series
I am an adult, and I still reread the Moomin series by Tove Jansson. Any of the books are good, but this is one of my favorites. The beauty of Jansson's books is that they are fantasies, yet at the same time they are very interesting character portraits. The moomins and their friends and countrymen may be "fantasy animals", but they have very human foibles. The books have such an "otherworldly" sense about them, too - they transport the reader to another world. I reread these books to cheer myself up when I feel bad. They are soothing, and they make you forget your troubles. I would recommend them to adults as well as to children.

As usual, a marvellous read for both kids and grown-ups.
This book and its' companions changed my life. And many others. Tove Jansson's Moomin series is without doubt the finest children's literature ever. And it must be said that it's in the running for the finest literature ever, period. 'Midwinter' is somewhat more somber in tone than the earlier Moomin books, but does not yet approach the dark, lonely colors Jansson paints with in the last two parts of the series. Full of memorable sequences and fairy-tale imagery, this book is guaranteed to delight children and induce in adults a painfully strong yearning for the days of their childhood.
