why did it take so long?
this book is long overdue. it's wealth of fabulous stories in SF are a true testament to the presence of blacks in SF. But why did it take so long to be released? well, for more than one reason. the publishers only publish what there is an obvious demand for and young black people hide their science fiction. "thats not my book" they say to their classmates. or "it's for class", as if to excuse their reading of anything that doesn't have the words "RAP CITY" on the front cover, because 'of course' nothing else is *black* enough.

Science Fiction encourages thoughts of the future. Encourage young people of color to read SF. If they complain there is a lack of representation, then maybe, like these wonderful authors, they'll force the hand of the publishers and scream thier vision so loudly that they can not help but be heard...

Brilliant collection by veterans and new comers
This book will no doubt be required reading for generations to come. Finally a three dimensional globe of fiction that surpasses genre and cliche. Regardless of what it is categorized as; science fiction, future, fantasy, or horror, Dark Matter enlightens, entertains and leaves you wanting more, hence GOOD FICTION by Tananarive Due, Steve Barns, Ocativa E.Butler, Walter Mosely, Jewelle Gomez and more.

The first story by W. E. B. Dubois is the perfect example... this story of a black man and a white woman discovering that they are the only ones living among a massive meteor disaster in the streets of New York begin re-evaluating their roles as black or white, lower class or upper class and begin to see that none of that matters. As the last two humans living on earth, the record is wiped clean of labels and salvaging humanity is the only real issue.

It's a must read, can't put down, tell all your friends about book that will hopefully get the recognition and reward it deserves.

Excellent anthology
Fans of science fiction and fantasy will be delighted with this new anthology that focuses on the contributions of Black authors to the speculative fiction genre. The 40 tales have been written over the past century and include many notable writers such as Octavia Butler and Nalo Hopkinson. Historical figures like Web DuBois have also contributed to this enchanting collection.

Most of the stories are excellent and have a satirical bite to them. None of the tales fail to entertain. Although some of the older contributions shows their "age" (as many of the nineteenth and early twentieth century science fiction tales do), nonetheless they are well written and enjoyable. Readers of short story science fiction or fantasy will find DARK MATTER an entertaining, enlightening collection.

Going Global Logically
Global Manifest Destiny is one of those rare reads. It's practical, logical, and cuts to the heart of any business's concerns about competing in the global marketplace. It offers an almost self-diagnosis for small to medium-sized enterprizes who understand that global economic integration is inevitable - and not just for the big players any more. Each chapter provides expert guidance in developing a checklist of key business functions that must be addressed in order to succeed globally, and the succinct delivery is a pleasure to read. Highly recommended!!

Great resource
An excellent book for companies that are contemplating expansion into global markets as well as for those already doing business globally. The book helps ensure that all elements impacting how a company does business in markets worldwide are considered and addressed as plans for conducting business globally are developed and implemented.
Global Manifest Destiny is a great resource for building a successful gloabl presence.

Business Pleasure
After reading the first book from Caslione Thomas,"Growing Your Business in Emerging Market" , the new book "Global Manifest Destiny" is a logical continuation for a company journey to be successful in the International markets.
The book can be also useful to companies that think themselves as global and want to make a reality check of their "Global" capabilities.
Although treating a very complex subject Global Manifest Destiny, it remains very practical and with plenty of ideas ready to use.

HISTORY, ADVENTURE, THIS IS AN EPIC STORY!!
This is one of the best books I have ever read, Bernal Diaz provides in great depth the CONQUEST OF MEXICO and the fall of the Mexica(Aztecs). For anyone interested in Mexican History or the history of the Western Hemisphere in general, this is a must. The chapters are short and easy to read, as well as addicting, especially during the final siege of Mexico. This is a great book to read especially if you're from Zapotlanejo, Jalisco or from Norwalk, California. This book is a great stepping stone on the subject and one should also check out Letters from Mexico(letters from Cortes himself) and Broken Spears(the Aztec account of the Conquest). Orale!

On the spot reportage from 16th century conquistador
Several decades ago, as a college sophomore, I was assigned to read Bernal Díaz' work as part of a Latin American history course. The title did not give me much hope. I imagined having to force myself to sit at a desk night after night in order to finish the book. To my great surprise, once I began to read this incredible eye-witness account, I could not put it down. Still, some 38 years later, Bernal Díaz' story, as one of the soldiers who accompanied Cortés, remains forever as one of the best books I have ever read on any subject.

Vivid, eye-witness description of the whole story of the Conquest of Mexico in 1519 will rivet you to the pages, if you have even the slightest sense of history or desire to imagine strange events in faroff places. Here is the tale of how the Spanish soldiers, led by Cortés, despite tremendous odds, toppled an ancient civilization, destroying it utterly, and began a new society that would eventually become modern Mexico. Where else are you going to read words like these, describing the Spaniards' first arrival in Tenochtitlan, which would become Mexico City ? "When we saw so many cities and villages built both in the water and on dry land, and this straight, level causeway, we couldn't restrain our admiration. It was like the enchantments told about in the book of Amadis, because of the high towers, temples, and other buildings, all of masonry, which rose from the water. Some of our soldiers asked if what we saw was not a dream." Alliances, intrigues, battles, retributions, strange gods and the clash of utterly different cultures fill this amazing book. If you have any fondness for history, if you have any curiosity about vanished civilizations, if you would like to ponder about Fate with more substance than usual (!), then Bernal Díaz is your man. Do not pass this book by.

Complete acount of the conquest of Mexico by the Spanish.
Review by Tom rederiksen - http://members.aol.com/spdtom/index.html - AZTEC STUDENT TEACHER RESOURCE CENTER: Diaz is an accomplished writer and I was impressed with his attention to detail as it related to the daily life and inter-personal relationships between the Conquistadors. This is a fairly long book but reads easily and anyone that enjoys a good adventure or mystery novel will find this an interesting book. As there are precious few first hand accounts from this time period, this first hand narrative is a must read for anyone getting started in the study of the Mexican conquest time period. This book was written rather late in life by the author. Supposedly, Diaz read a copy of a book by Lopez de Gomara, Chronicle of the Conquest of New Spain, and was so outraged by references to "Cortes this", and "Cortes that", that the old soldier penned this classic. Were it not for the work of Diaz, the world would not have a comprehensive record of the conquest. A must read.

What a fantastic source book!
The Cowans have done it again.

If you are looking for a practical, beautiful, meaningful handbook for core shamanism ... look no further.

This book is packed full of exercises, ideas, journeys, interpretations and core shamanic values. I have been studying shamanism, and this is the most useful introductory text I have come across. It will give you the principles you need in order to build your own shamanic practice, without forcing you down the path of a certain cultural shamanic tradition.

As Cowan says: not all of us are cut out to be actual Shamans, but anyone can be a shamanic practitioner.

I highly recommend this book, whether you are already a practitioner, or are interested in learning more. This is not a book you will regret buying, no matter how advanced your practice becomes over time.

a gentle introduction to journeying
Having never read anything about Shamanism before, and being rather intimidated by the subject, this book was a great way to gently learn about Shamanism. With this book as my guide, it felt safe to explore journeying, and this has become a great gift in my life! The idea of shamanic practice seems possible for everyone through this book. I have learned a lot from it and would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand shamanic practices as well as experiment a little with them. This book shows you how.

A Trustworthy Introduction to a Vast Realm
Half the battle of shamanism is undoing our conditioning and fragemntalist consciousness that has been modeled to us by modernity. Shamanism As A Spiritual Practice for Daily Life offers just such an invitation. Fans of Cowan's Fire in the Head: Shamanism and the Celtic Spirit who wanted 'the next step' in terms of practices will find a trustworthy introduction to the vast realm of shamanism and shamanic practice--though anyone, regardless of ancestral background, will enjoy the book as it was written from more of a "core shamanic" or "core shamanist" perspective. In addition to introducing readers to the sacred topography of shamanism--usually but not always experienced as the Lowerworld, Middleworld and Upperworld, readers will also feel an astonishing sense of support offered to remember and reclaim their own inherent shamanic sensibilities that we all knew as children. The chapter on childhood is a masterpiece to contemplate, as it conjures up our old childhood haunts and explores the relevance of these to shamanic practice, while also offering words of support to parents who either have a shamanic-child or who want to, more generally, support the animistic nature of their children. Overall, this book is an inexpendable "co-walker" for those seeking to rekindle an animistic pathway of living.

Good, But Read With Caution!
As a physician recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, I found the book entertaining and easy to read in 2-3 hours due to the large text. I applaud him for encouraging men to have their prostates checked starting in their 40's. Unfortunately, the book is directed to Blacks more than to all men. The reader is cautioned that the author delays treatment and eventually chooses one form of therapy at a specific institution. The treatment option that has the greatest chance for cure is downplayed. Use this book as only one resource among several. Also, I would have liked more encouragement to let the diagnosis change your life for the better. Best wishes.

Extraordinary presentation of a very complex subject
This book impressed me because it presents a layman's view of prostate cancer in a very personal manner. The statistics presented in the book are an education on the number of African American men stricken with the disease. Reading this book has given both my husband and me a new perspective on prostate cancer and generated an interest in doing what we can to educate others. I recommend the book highly for anyone who wants to learn about the disease, anyone who has the disease, and families of those stricken with the disease. Dr. Walker has presented a very complex subject in terms that anyone can understand. Bravo!!

A MUST READ for anyone interested in prostrate cancer.
This is an excellent first hand description of how one individual faced the challange of being diagnosed with prostrate cancer. As a recent prostrate cancer survivor, I can personally relate to the "human" aspect of this challenge.

The author goes into the issues of fear, loneliness, denial, outrage and all other emotions most people experience after being diagnosed with cancer. Of particular signifance is the way he openly deals with the reluctance many men have in facing prostrate disorders because of the sexual ramifications of treatment options.

African American men get prostrate cancer more than any other ethnic group and they have the highest death rates. This book can be especially usefull to African American men as the author is both African American and a minister.

If you are a male forty or over or a female who has the interest of a male in this category...... you can benefit tremendously by reading this very personal account of how one person dealt with this growing problem.

The Butcher's Boy

The book is a Killer-Thriller
Thomas Perry's first novel is a Killer-Thriller! I had read "Sleeping Dogs"(the sequal) before I read "The Butchers Boy". Both books are great. I am glad they re-printed "The Butchers Boy" because it explains a lot I missed when reading
"Sleeping Dogs". However, each book can stand alone without the other. The "Butchers Boy" is about a hitman that is double crossed by the mob after he completed some contract(killing) work for them. It also tells the story of the Department of Justice Field Agent that is trying to tie all the killings together. It is a race to the end to find the missing link that will tie the knot to this killer-thriller. Also don't miss the few chapters that introduces us to the much loved "jane whitefield series" the lady that can make you disappear. I hope Perry brings that series back-it was one of his best. "Butchers Boy is a good read!

A violent anti-hero from a brilliant writer
Thomas Perry introduces the unpredictable Butcher's Boy in this book and continues the story years later in the novel Sleeping Dogs. Both books are great. This one won an Edgar award. Read everything you can by Perry. He's the best thriller writer going. Unlike some more popular writers in this genre, he can actually write.

Perry's first, and best
I read this book in one sitting, something I've haven't done since. It always amazed me that a movie hasn't been made out out this great story line: Hit-man on the run, young female FBI agent and Mafia hit-men on his trail. What fascinated me was the detailed picture that Perry paints on the need of a person in a business such as the 'Butcher's Boy' to blend into the background and, by all means, not get noticed. He's carried this on somewhat in his later books, which are all very good, but this is, I believe, his masterpiece.

The best book I ever read on Electronic
You can find here a fine description of last RF design knowhow, with answers to questions I'd like to have before. Thank you Mister LEE!!!

Excellent introduction to CMOS RF Design
Possibly the most well-written book on CMOS design I have ever read. Relaxed, readable style and an emphasis on core ideas and rule-of-thumb design rules, makes this an extremely useful practical guide, as well as a great introduction to a complex topic. Some excellent advanced material on oscillator design too. I particularly liked the first and last chapters giving a history of radio design - very interesting background. I think the best compliment I can give this book is that I found it difficult to put down - for a circuits textbook, that is truly an incredible achievement!

The first chapter alone is worth the money.
The first chapter of this book gives a history of radio design with schematics. The cmos portion gives a good coverage of RF components, smith charts, CMOS inductors, Bandwidth estimation techniques etc. More an RF issues book than a cmos layout book with almost all layout examples being single components. This is an excellent single issue book focused on Radio design specifically CMOS radio design. Those looking for a book focused on CMOS design should buy this book in addition to another.

This book is awesome!
I bought a number of copies of this book, one for me and the rest for gifts. I also bought the original Look-Alikes book in multiple quantities. I hate to admit it, but I'm 44, an engineer, and keep both books in my office. I'm sure the kids love them, but hey aren't we all little kids at heart! Enjoy!

Fascinating for all ages!
I haven't purchased this yet, just have the library copy here. I heard about the adult version when it first came out, but didn't know there was a Look-Alikes for kids. I don't know what the age recommendation on this it, but my 3 1/2-yr-old is absolutely fascinated by it! Guess what he's getting for Christmas! And since I love things like this, everytime he says, "Mommy, come look at my library picture book" I drop what I'm doing and sit down with him. To me, that is the ultimate compliment - this book has prompted me to sit and concentrate on spending time with my child more often, and that's priceless. And believe it or not, most of the objects in the pictures aren't that obvious to adults, so when I point them out to him (excited that I myself found them), he's absolutely delighted. We've tried to push toys on our son that are not passive, where he sits and watches a battery-operated thingy do whatever it does, toys that encourage active participation and imagination, and I can't imagine anything better than this book. Just my thought, but I think this book and the original Look-Alikes are invaluable tools for teaching people of all ages to thing outside the box, shift your perception, and that's something that's good for all of us! Guess you can tell that I can't say enough good things about this, Ms. Steiner is an absolute genius.

An utterly engrossing way to spend several hours
Joan Steiner's "Look-Alikes, Jr." is a wonderful follow-up to her 1998 "Look-Alikes." This self-taught artist employs everyday items from chess pieces to lasagna noodles, from nail polish bottles to keys, from crackers to ink pens, to construct the most completely realistic little scenes. There are spaceships blasting off towards outer space; middle-class living rooms; classrooms; general stores, and more, all of which are chock-full of items Steiner employs to look like something else. The aforementioned lasagna noodles? Yes, they're here--as curtains! And they look improbably wonderful as curtains!

This is certainly a treat for kids. But you may find that the adults end up buying their own copies of "Look-Alikes, Jr." just so they can sit in peace and be engrossed for hours on their own without having to share this wonderful book with the younger set! Highly recommended!

Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times
Published in Audio Cassette by Books on Tape (1992)
Author: Thomas Hauser
Amazon base price: $112.00
Average review score:

A "must read" for Ali fans
Muhammad Ali has always played a large part in my life. He showed me that being black did not make me inferior at a time when almost everything and everyone said the opposite. This book gave me a fresh perspective on his achievements and his beliefs, thanks to contributions from sources as diverse as Joe Frazier and Cheryl Tiegs. The stories are wide-ranging and informative. Some were laugh out loud funny (very embarrassing when you're on a train). Some were depressing (stories surrounding Ali's entourage and the Holmes fight almost made me cry). There are even some from people who don't like Ali or see him as someone worthy of praise. All of them gave me a deeper, more rounded insight into a man that I viewed with awe and reverence. I started the book seeing Ali as some kind of distant super hero and ended it seeing him as a warm, caring human being with the same flaws and insecurities as anyone else. Along the way I laughed a lot and learned even more. The book is funny, engaging, and inspirational...just like the man himself.

Vital stuff for sports fans and non-fans alike.
Aside from being one helluva boxer, Muhammad Ali was a vibrant, intuitive, funny, giving, and confilcted man. But his universal fame and his powerful fists (in addition to his constantly flapping mouth) often obscured his innate humanity, a quality that is made strikingly evident in Thomas Hauser's "Muhammad Ali: His Life And Times". Hauser's interview-driven paean to possibly the greatest sportsman of the Twentieth Century celebrates Ali's impact both in and out of the boxing ring, while at the same time revealing the heretofore unknown depths of The Champ's complex personality. Even if you know Ali's history backwards and forwards, there's still much to learn from this breathtakingly honest volume. For example, I had no idea that early in his career, soon after he declared himself a member of the intensely pro-black Nation Of Islam, Ali would make his way into poor white neighborhoods to play with the children of the men that his religious sect referred to as "white devils". I was also surprised to learn that the Ali of today--though not the least bit regretful of his decision to align himself with Elijah Muhammad in the early 1960's--no longer holds the Nation Of Islam's founder in particularly high regard. The fact that the champ himself cooperated in the construction of this book (i.e., the unflinching honesty during his own interviews, in addition to the insistance that all of his co-hortrs who were quoted be totally truthful themselves) makes "His Life And Times" that much more vital. An essential portrait a true American original.

One of the best books I've ever read
If you are a Muhammad Ali fan then you definitely need to have this book.It gives details of his life and career. These details are not only told by him but by other people who he had an influence on. You get a chance to hear from his opponents and also his entourage. This is a good buy.
