Only this is better.
Simple and yet very rich illustrations bounce you from page to page. They are vibrant but not overwhelming, you are curious about where the images will take you next, it makes you hungry for more. And you get more! There is a printed illustration on almost every other page of the book! There seem to be as many small images, lending themselves as nuances to Carroll's text, as there are full-page illustrations. In a word, it's fantastic.
I disagree with the editorial review of the School Library Journal. While I see this book as sophisticated, I also see very young children relating to the artwork. The dream is at times spooky and frustrating like the real world can be, just as at other moments it can be a playful party. Although Alice in Wonderland may not have been originally intended for child as young as three or four years old to read, they will be enticed into trying. A child as young as four will relate to this Alice, she is a small girl with flowing hair and dresses in an easy style. Deloss McGraw has illustrated a modern and truly dreamlike interpretation of Carroll's classic. Finally we have a total departure from the formal British and more grown up Alice that John Tenniel portrayed all those years ago and has been an influence upon artists attempting it since.
Albeit a short, but important side note: the size 14 - 16 font is very readable for both old and young eyes, and comes in very handy for those readers-out-loud at late bedtimes in a dimly lit room.
Of all the illustrated versions there are of this classic story, this will be the version your child would first pick up from the shelf.

Alex English is a fastidious, stuffy, proper gentleman farmer who is extremely proud of his participation in the World's Columbian Exposition being held in Chicago. For him, the Expo showcases all that is good about America and should be an educational and uplifting experience for all who attend - and he will not allow anything to taint it. But when a young woman who works at the Expo is attacked (and by her own father!), Alex is outraged and decides she has to go - can't have this sort of unpleasantness spoiling the Expo!
For Kate Finney, the Expo is just an opportunity to make a bit more money to support herself and her mother. She's working two jobs, one at a fortune-telling booth and the other as an "Egyptian" dancer. But her worthless drunk of a father has not only threatened her life, but now her livelihood - for when Alex English shows up, she knows with dread exactly why he's come. But she's not going without a fight, darn it! Alex is completely unprepared for her outrage and her fighting spirit! He's never met anyone like Kate Finney!
Once Alex gets over the shock of his initial meeting with Kate, he becomes curious about her and learns of her desperate family circumstances. Kate is waging a one-woman battle against poverty, an abusive, dangerous father and the tuberculosis ravaging her beloved mother. When Alex takes steps to make what may be her mother's last weeks or months as comfortable as possible, Kate is initially suspicious and resentful. But over time, she realizes that Alex is genuinely a nice guy with only pure motives. Gee, it would be real nice to have a man like that in her life, but he's not for the likes of her - poor Kate Finney from the slums of Chicago. As for Alex, he's come to admire Kate - she's smart, strong and beautiful and he longs to knock that chip off her shoulder and make her life better. Would she even let him?
In a genre full of sometimes tawdry and empty stories with characters who manipulate and deceive one another, this was a breath of fresh air! Well developed characters that you really care about and a terrific story. Highly recommended!
at life on the wrong side of the tracks. Alex is part of the rich
aristocracy and quite the snob when it comes to associating with the
unfortunate people of the lower classes. He has the absurd idea that the
poor are simply down on their luck because they choose to be. He is
exasperating and sometimes so naive that he frustrates me. Kate is an
acid-tongued young woman who is rude and pushy to the extent you want to
shake her out of it. When Alex's rose-colored vision of life meets Kate's
every day reality there is an explosion of fireworks. Alex is brought down
to humility and Kate is brought up to the realization that there is kindness
in the world. Ms. Duncan has penned a fine adventure. A BICYCLE BUILT FOR
TWO is a delightful story and not to be missed!

Alice Duncan. It's every bit as good as the first two were! This one tells
the story of Kate Finney. In the second story, Kate's father attacked her
and Belle saved Kate by beating her father with an umbrella. Now, this
third book is Kate's story.
It starts off with snobbish Alex English aghast that someone actually had
the audacity to do that at the World's Columbian Exposition. He decides
that he must go and meet this Kate Finney and let her know that things of
that sort are just not the thing! Alex has no idea that feisty Kate will
give him a run for his money! She's holding down two jobs trying to make
ends meet and taking care of her mother. She especially wants to keep her
mother's whereabouts from her father as her mother is very ill with
consumption and isn't long for the world.
When Alex confronts Kate she gives him as good as he gives her so he
decides to investigate her further. He's shocked by what he finds and
decides then and there that he will help her and her family. The problem
is Kate will have no part of Alex or his help. After all she has her pride.
She has no way of knowing that when Alex gets his claws into something he's
like a bulldog! Both Alex and Kate have a few lessons to learn about each
other as well.
This delightful story as well as the whole series was a joy to read. I
absolutely enjoyed the entire series of books and eagerly look forward to
what Alice Duncan will come up with to entertain us so thoroughly! Kathy Boswell, The Best Reviews

The titles of these speeches are enough to tell why this should be every rebel's handbook.
As a physician, he explained that being good people is not enough to become a revolutionary doctor - one must make a revolution. Once that revolution had won through, he explained the tasks communist youth face. This advice may be taken well to heart, because there are too many people who try to be good persons, and leave it at that.
Read el Ché in his own voice, so you can make up your own mind. This is what Pathfinder Press stands out for: offering space for revolutionaries to speak for themselves. And well earned is this addition to the "...Speaks" "series."
Historically, this individual's intellectual development may be traced in this volume. The reader can see how the ideas gelled into what was to become the first experiment in the socialism of solidarity, which was retaken in 1985, just in time before the USSR began to quaver.

If you are serious about making a human world, buy this book ! And pass it on to others.
Forthright...gripping...delightful. Reading this book-length interview with Victor Dreke is like sitting down for a chat with a favourite uncle and being totally mesmerized by the story of his life -- which is part of yours, too. Completely uncomplicatedly, he tells of young rebels going on missions with guns that jammed at the crucial moment never-to-be-forgotten lesson on the discipline of weapons-cleaning!); being in Africa with Che Guevara (the beginning of a chain of events that eventually led to Namibian independence and the release of Nelson Mandela); and being an Afro-Cuban at the very beginning of the revolution (he was sent to a town where the rope separating Blacks from whites at Saturday night dances had only been taken down days before -- by a white Rebel Army officer). He describes the thrill in 1953 of hearing that Fidel Castro had stormed the Moncada Barracks. The action went down to military defeat -- but it was a sign that there were people who would never waver, and Dreke responded. Gives you total confidence that human beings can learn how to fight and win. Also paints a convincing picture of why Cuba is part of Africa.

I had no idea that having this new cookbook would be so rewarding!
Alice Toklas has some INCREDIBLE recipes in here (Scheherezade Melon being a favorite!), all of which should be tried and enjoyed.
Furthermore, this book contains recipes you simply wont find in other, newer, cookbooks. My girlfriend really summed this book up by suggesting that the recipes in this book are the recipes you know exist -- but are being passed from grandmother to granddaughter; you simply dont get these unless youre in that circle of people.
This cookbook is your way in to exquisite dishes that were prepared for the likes of Gertrude Stein, Hemmingway, Picasso, and Matisse.
That, and where else are you going to find a recipe for Hashish Fudge?
This book has my whole-hearted, overwhelming approval.
This classic of 20th century food lit appears every few years and rightfully so. First published in 1954 by Alice B. Toklas, the life partner of Gertrude Stein, established Alice as a writer in her own right and made her world-famous(once again) with her "Haschich Fudge" aka Alice B. Toklas brownies! This recipe, which was not included in the first American edition, but was included in the British edition, does appear in this book. It's more than a cookbook, it's an affectionate remembrance by someone who knew and was known by some of the artistic giants of the 20th century.

However, after sitting down and doing a side-by-side comparison of the two books, I realized that there is some very different information between the two. Both are quite useful, and if I ever question information in one (come on, that's what we DO) I have a second source to confirm the first. I find myself reaching for this book time after time, and not just to confirm info from the Handybook. There are certain things I find easier to understand in the Red Book, not to mention the different perspective offered.
This book is, simply put, indispensible!

Chris Allen-Wickler covers rocks with peyote stitch, leaving holes here and there. Kenneth A Arthur uses brass shells and plumbing parts to make a sculpture he calls "My Dad's Drawer." Joann Baumann found a use for her old Nymo beading thread bobbins, using the bobbins as beads. Several artists give credit to Joyce Scott for encouraging their fearless use of beads.
Our San Antonio Bead and Ornament Society member Alison F Whittemore found a use for all of her extra beads and tiny treasures. She covered a beanpot with them. I hope she buys raffle tickets for our bead jar. She would have a blast coming up with a use for that eclectic mix.
One of my favorite pieces is a sampler of 9 tiny toys made of seed beads. I feel in the love with the many gorgeous decorated dress forms, jewelry & masks. The beaded beads & eggs are adorable.
There is nude woman sitting on a cow & eating a banana. In another a green woman lifts weights. I had to laugh when I saw a doll standing doll on her head and an old lady with a funky perm.
