Alice and her "wonderlust"
Lewis Carroll is a great author for kids and he represents a completely new phase in children's literature. Children are children and they only have grown-up age in front of them as a limited world and a perspective, the latter of which they may change when they are grown up by remembering what childhood was for them and the tales they entertained when they were children in order to tell them to a new generation of children. Lewis Carroll leads Alice into a world where everyday objects and animals, but also strange objects and animals, mix. Everything is right and wrong at the same time. Too small or too big. Everything speaks and tells stories or sings songs that remind Alice of songs she knows but that come out strange and distorted. This whole world of wonderland is a suddenly animated pack of cards in a doll's house and doll's garden. But at the same time Lewis Carroll invests the fears and the fantasms of the child into this world. We then can have and see a father figure and a mother figure that loom high in this world and represent a completely aborted sense of justice. Alice, the child, becomes the one who puts things together and back to straightness by just dreaming this disrupted world awake. She only nostalgically remembers the fascination that was hers and the strangeness that was that world's. Waking up brings her back to normality and clears this wonderland of the menaces it contained. Lewis Carroll is a genius when he thus depicts a world of fear and frustration and shows how this world can become marvellous in real life because it is the antipodes of everyday regular society.

Dr Jacques COULARDEAU

Enticing illustrations, like that of a modern master painter
Do you remember the first time you saw a painting by Marc Chagall? His fantastic creatures wearing hats and trousers, people kissing while floating in mid air, layers of events happening at once, and conversations between animals and flowers? If Chagall was alive and asked to illustrate Alice's Adventures, it may have looked very similar to this.

Only this is better.

Simple and yet very rich illustrations bounce you from page to page. They are vibrant but not overwhelming, you are curious about where the images will take you next, it makes you hungry for more. And you get more! There is a printed illustration on almost every other page of the book! There seem to be as many small images, lending themselves as nuances to Carroll's text, as there are full-page illustrations. In a word, it's fantastic.

I disagree with the editorial review of the School Library Journal. While I see this book as sophisticated, I also see very young children relating to the artwork. The dream is at times spooky and frustrating like the real world can be, just as at other moments it can be a playful party. Although Alice in Wonderland may not have been originally intended for child as young as three or four years old to read, they will be enticed into trying. A child as young as four will relate to this Alice, she is a small girl with flowing hair and dresses in an easy style. Deloss McGraw has illustrated a modern and truly dreamlike interpretation of Carroll's classic. Finally we have a total departure from the formal British and more grown up Alice that John Tenniel portrayed all those years ago and has been an influence upon artists attempting it since.

Albeit a short, but important side note: the size 14 - 16 font is very readable for both old and young eyes, and comes in very handy for those readers-out-loud at late bedtimes in a dimly lit room.

Of all the illustrated versions there are of this classic story, this will be the version your child would first pick up from the shelf.

WOW!!!!
This book has blown my mind...incrediable....the most colorful illustrations ever...and it's a book for all ages

An introduction to birthstones, sun signs, planets and myths
Astrology Anyone? isn't your usual in-depth guide to astrology, but a bare-bones beginner's handbook which provides newcomers to the topic with an introduction to birthstones, sun signs, planets and myths. Those with a special interest in personalities and daily astrological forecast will be particularly interested.

Simply The Best
Alyce Renee has written a terrific book on astrology! I am currently at the student level of astrology but ready to move on to serious study. I picked up this book while looking through basic astrology titles, and I can recommend it without hesitation to those with even a cursory interest in serious astrology. Alyce Renee's simplified approach to astrology won't confuse or overwhelm the reader with what can be an enormously complex subject. Her style is instructional, concise, and easily understood, but offers incredibly detailed explanations and charts for each of the 12 astrological signs. The reader will quickly be applying valuable insights learned here. It should be read with an open mind and desire for personal understanding. This book on astrology provides an invaluable tool for building personal confidence and developing strong lasting relationships. Astrology has literally been a source of revelation to me. If you only buy one book on astrology -- this is it! 5-Stars all the way.

The Worksheets Alone are worth the Price
After reading ASTROLOGY ANYONE? I was gently seduced into the world of astrology. In the past, when I have looked at astrology books, I have been intimidated by dates and numbers. Not so here. Alyce Renee explains with utter clarity the mysteries of astrology and provides worksheets for the reader to make his own astrological chart. Thankyou, Alyce Renee.

Wonderful, poignant story of opposites attract!
Alice Duncan superbly recreates the 1890's in this terrific tale of two people from completely different worlds who find what they didn't know they were looking for in each other.

Alex English is a fastidious, stuffy, proper gentleman farmer who is extremely proud of his participation in the World's Columbian Exposition being held in Chicago. For him, the Expo showcases all that is good about America and should be an educational and uplifting experience for all who attend - and he will not allow anything to taint it. But when a young woman who works at the Expo is attacked (and by her own father!), Alex is outraged and decides she has to go - can't have this sort of unpleasantness spoiling the Expo!

For Kate Finney, the Expo is just an opportunity to make a bit more money to support herself and her mother. She's working two jobs, one at a fortune-telling booth and the other as an "Egyptian" dancer. But her worthless drunk of a father has not only threatened her life, but now her livelihood - for when Alex English shows up, she knows with dread exactly why he's come. But she's not going without a fight, darn it! Alex is completely unprepared for her outrage and her fighting spirit! He's never met anyone like Kate Finney!

Once Alex gets over the shock of his initial meeting with Kate, he becomes curious about her and learns of her desperate family circumstances. Kate is waging a one-woman battle against poverty, an abusive, dangerous father and the tuberculosis ravaging her beloved mother. When Alex takes steps to make what may be her mother's last weeks or months as comfortable as possible, Kate is initially suspicious and resentful. But over time, she realizes that Alex is genuinely a nice guy with only pure motives. Gee, it would be real nice to have a man like that in her life, but he's not for the likes of her - poor Kate Finney from the slums of Chicago. As for Alex, he's come to admire Kate - she's smart, strong and beautiful and he longs to knock that chip off her shoulder and make her life better. Would she even let him?

In a genre full of sometimes tawdry and empty stories with characters who manipulate and deceive one another, this was a breath of fresh air! Well developed characters that you really care about and a terrific story. Highly recommended!

A rollicking ride into the gay nineties
A BICYCLE BUILT FOR TWO is a rollicking ride into the gay nineties and a look
at life on the wrong side of the tracks. Alex is part of the rich
aristocracy and quite the snob when it comes to associating with the
unfortunate people of the lower classes. He has the absurd idea that the
poor are simply down on their luck because they choose to be. He is
exasperating and sometimes so naive that he frustrates me. Kate is an
acid-tongued young woman who is rude and pushy to the extent you want to
shake her out of it. When Alex's rose-colored vision of life meets Kate's
every day reality there is an explosion of fireworks. Alex is brought down
to humility and Kate is brought up to the realization that there is kindness
in the world. Ms. Duncan has penned a fine adventure. A BICYCLE BUILT FOR
TWO is a delightful story and not to be missed!

Diana Risso, Romance Reviews Today

A delightful story!
This is the third and last book in the "Meet Me At the Fair" series by
Alice Duncan. It's every bit as good as the first two were! This one tells
the story of Kate Finney. In the second story, Kate's father attacked her
and Belle saved Kate by beating her father with an umbrella. Now, this
third book is Kate's story.

It starts off with snobbish Alex English aghast that someone actually had
the audacity to do that at the World's Columbian Exposition. He decides
that he must go and meet this Kate Finney and let her know that things of
that sort are just not the thing! Alex has no idea that feisty Kate will
give him a run for his money! She's holding down two jobs trying to make
ends meet and taking care of her mother. She especially wants to keep her
mother's whereabouts from her father as her mother is very ill with
consumption and isn't long for the world.

When Alex confronts Kate she gives him as good as he gives her so he
decides to investigate her further. He's shocked by what he finds and
decides then and there that he will help her and her family. The problem
is Kate will have no part of Alex or his help. After all she has her pride.
She has no way of knowing that when Alex gets his claws into something he's
like a bulldog! Both Alex and Kate have a few lessons to learn about each
other as well.

This delightful story as well as the whole series was a joy to read. I
absolutely enjoyed the entire series of books and eagerly look forward to
what Alice Duncan will come up with to entertain us so thoroughly! Kathy Boswell, The Best Reviews

The book is just wonderful!
I'm going to study in California next year and I don't have a drivers license yet. But thanks of this book I am sure I will get it easily!!!

Make your Fly-Drive Holiday more enjoyable :-)
....By which I mean that if you buy this book and work through [ sorry about that, I _am_ English :-)) ] the test papers you will gain much valuable knowledge about driving in the USA. This means that you are more able to enjoy your holiday as you will know so much more about the rules and regulations that there are in the USA and so, hopefully(!), not fall foul of them! By the time I'd worked through the first two papers and read the detailed informatation towards the back of the book even I was getting 30+ correct answers! So, I'd definitely recommend this book to any fellow "Brit" who wants to be less of a hazard when driving in the USA. Finally, Alice herself was _most_ helpful when I emailed her with a query I had regarding the DMV in California. So not only a most helpful book, but also excellent feedback direct from the auther herself. Do yourself a favour/favor(!!) and buy it :-)

NO MORE DRIVING TEST-DAY JITTERS!
Go ahead: Commit a Random Act of Kindness: You'll be doing yourself a big favor as well, when you buy the new California Drivers Test Made Easy by Alice B. Syman, for a friend or relative, and a second copy for yourself (can't we all use a little brush-up on our driving skills?). This affordable manual is for California drivers specifically but anyone from any state will enjoy this book, with its easy-to-read format, informal style, and delightful graphics.

Ms. Syman shows us, step-by-step, how to pass the California original or renewal Class C "Basic" License test. The well-organized chapters cover subjects of general driving interest as well as "Safer Driving for Seniors," "Younger Drivers," "Recreational Vehicles," "Road Hazards and Emergencies," "Road Rage" and many more. A glossary of terms leaves no questions unanswered. The book is spiced with amusing stories and valuable "insider" advice.

Ms. Syman has permission to publish California Department of Motor Vehicles' test questions. After passing the sample tests in her book, you will pass when you actually go for your drivers license test. NO MORE TEST-DAY JITTERS!

This book is helpful to senior drivers, especially those who may have to take a written and a driving test for a renewal. The book's compact size makes it easy to take with you wherever you go during your busy life, for those otherwise wasted minutes of time waiting in lines. Since driving laws don't change often, this book will be useful for several years.

The author is well-qualified to cover the subject of driving. Thousands have passed their tests the first time with the help of this book. Save wear and tear on your nerves, CLICK TO ORDER YOUR COPIES NOW!

Che Guevara Talks to Young People

rebel's handbook
Ché Guevara Speaks to Youth
The titles of these speeches are enough to tell why this should be every rebel's handbook.

As a physician, he explained that being good people is not enough to become a revolutionary doctor - one must make a revolution. Once that revolution had won through, he explained the tasks communist youth face. This advice may be taken well to heart, because there are too many people who try to be good persons, and leave it at that.

Read el Ché in his own voice, so you can make up your own mind. This is what Pathfinder Press stands out for: offering space for revolutionaries to speak for themselves. And well earned is this addition to the "...Speaks" "series."

Historically, this individual's intellectual development may be traced in this volume. The reader can see how the ideas gelled into what was to become the first experiment in the socialism of solidarity, which was retaken in 1985, just in time before the USSR began to quaver.

Rebel Youth Of 21st Century:Che Speaks To You !
...as an equal.Too many books are out there "interpreting" Che Guevara ; most often by academics who fear and hate revolution. Here Che speaks for himself : how the Cuban revolution discovered the "road of Marx" by breaking out of the Yanqui Empire fror good; how "lone wolf" individualists do NOT make social revolutions; how to be a revolutionary MD or anything else "first a revolution must be made"; the need for a disciplined revolutionary youth organization;how to learn from fighting workers and peasants while fighting alongside them;internationalism as a necessity and a duty; the fight against postrevolution bureaucracy. These ideas as guide to action are how revolutionary Cuba has survived and will survive.Young and not-so-young fighters REQUIRE THIS BOOK as "globalized capitalism" tears our lives apart. To fight back "intelligently, as Malcolm X would say.Read "Cuba And The Coming American Revolution" by Jack Barnes side by side with this gem of a book.

Ideas needed as much now as when Che Spoke
Even if you are not so young person like myself, you can find your youth and your belief in the future, through Che's vision in these speeches. Whether speaking to a group of medical students in Havana, or a Latin American Youth Congress, or to anti-imperialist youth from around the world gathered in Algeria, Che's message to young people was not watered down. These speeches are a serious charge to young people to take the present and the future in their hands, and follow his vision of struggle for socialism, for the needs of working people, the oppressed, around the world. The ideas in this book are just as, or perhaps, even more valid than when Che lived.

A look at where two nations mights well be headed
Cuba And The Coming American Revolution by author and political activist Jack Barnes, is a provocative and forcefully worded examination of the history and the future of American and Cuban politics. Ranging from the utter disaster that was the Bay of Pigs to predicting a socialist revolution in American policy and a counterrevolution in Cuba, this is an informed and informative account of class struggle. Barnes especially underscores the ways in which the American working class has been steamrolled and the consequent incentives that call for change. Cuba And The Coming American Revolution is a thought-provoking look at where two nations mights well be headed and a very welcome contribution to Cuban History and Socialist Studies academic reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Cuba Shows Us We Can Win
Jack Barnes, the author of this boook, points out: "The greatest obstacle to the line of march of the toilers is the tendency, perpetuated by the exploiting classes, for working people to underestimate ourselves, to underestimate what we can accomplish, to doubt our own worth." This book proves that like the Cubans the working class in the United States has the capacity to win political power. Barnes explains how after a visit to Cuba in 1960 he and other student activists defended Cuba during the Bay of Pigs invasion. They stood up to both campus administrators and right-wing thugs and won the the right not only to speak out but to become the makers of history, like the Cubans. Barnes explains how the Cubans as a people demonstrated remarkable courage and determination in standing up to an imperialist terror campaign, arms in hand, while continueing their revolutionary work, which included a literacy campaign the likes of which has not been seen before or since. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A BOLD SOCIAL VISION, I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO YOU!

For Those Serious About Changing The World
If you think, or rather I should say believe, that the "market" is the best of all possible systems, this the best of all possible countries, in the best of all possible worlds, then this is not the book for you.But if you are serious about doing something effective about meaningful social change in the "new millenium", then you owe it to yourself to buy this book. The author begins with the efforts of a small band of young people at a small Midwestern college to oppose the Yankee empire's efforts to overthrow the Cuban Revolution at the Bay of Pigs in 1961, and during the "Missile Crisis" in 1962. He shows you how and why the Cuban people then, and still today, were willing to fight and die to defend their nation and revolution, and how those everyday ordinary working people changed themselves into better humans in the process. He then explains that the only way to rid the earth of war, racism, discrimination against women, enviromental catastrophe, etc., is to do what the Cubans did, here in the "belly of the beast" --make a revolution. The alternative, he affirms, is fascism and a new world war. Finally he points to a concrete program to unify working people here and now,at home and abroad, necessary to fight back against the economic catastrophe looming before us to anyone with eyes to see.

If you are serious about making a human world, buy this book ! And pass it on to others.

Washington is Afraid of People Like this
submitted for my friend Katy L. . . .
Forthright...gripping...delightful. Reading this book-length interview with Victor Dreke is like sitting down for a chat with a favourite uncle and being totally mesmerized by the story of his life -- which is part of yours, too. Completely uncomplicatedly, he tells of young rebels going on missions with guns that jammed at the crucial moment never-to-be-forgotten lesson on the discipline of weapons-cleaning!); being in Africa with Che Guevara (the beginning of a chain of events that eventually led to Namibian independence and the release of Nelson Mandela); and being an Afro-Cuban at the very beginning of the revolution (he was sent to a town where the rope separating Blacks from whites at Saturday night dances had only been taken down days before -- by a white Rebel Army officer). He describes the thrill in 1953 of hearing that Fidel Castro had stormed the Moncada Barracks. The action went down to military defeat -- but it was a sign that there were people who would never waver, and Dreke responded. Gives you total confidence that human beings can learn how to fight and win. Also paints a convincing picture of why Cuba is part of Africa.

I believe that this is one of the best French cookbooks of all time. Very old, traditional recipes explained in a way that makes even the more advanced ones seem doable. She also includes recipes from her youth in America and tells how she came across the recipe for Haschich Fudge. The stories interwoven are captivating, especially about the society she and Gertrude Stein kept, and their efforts during WWI as volunteers. In this respect it is a fascinating historical document. It is written as if she is speaking to you, and her speech is very blunt, to the point and quietly humorous. Very enjoyable to read.

Exquisite Recipes and Fun to read, too!
Ive been cooking with _Joy of Cooking_ for a long time now. _Joy_ makes reference to a chapter in this book, "Murder in the Kitchen," as a sort of primer on how to 'murder' a carp in the kitchen before cooking. I decided, on a whim, to buy the book.

I had no idea that having this new cookbook would be so rewarding!

Alice Toklas has some INCREDIBLE recipes in here (Scheherezade Melon being a favorite!), all of which should be tried and enjoyed.

Furthermore, this book contains recipes you simply wont find in other, newer, cookbooks. My girlfriend really summed this book up by suggesting that the recipes in this book are the recipes you know exist -- but are being passed from grandmother to granddaughter; you simply dont get these unless youre in that circle of people.

This cookbook is your way in to exquisite dishes that were prepared for the likes of Gertrude Stein, Hemmingway, Picasso, and Matisse.

That, and where else are you going to find a recipe for Hashish Fudge?

This book has my whole-hearted, overwhelming approval.

A cook is a cook is a cook!
2002 is Alice's 125th birthday, so why not get her most famous book and cook up a birthday dinner?!
This classic of 20th century food lit appears every few years and rightfully so. First published in 1954 by Alice B. Toklas, the life partner of Gertrude Stein, established Alice as a writer in her own right and made her world-famous(once again) with her "Haschich Fudge" aka Alice B. Toklas brownies! This recipe, which was not included in the first American edition, but was included in the British edition, does appear in this book. It's more than a cookbook, it's an affectionate remembrance by someone who knew and was known by some of the artistic giants of the 20th century.

Another Essential Genealogy Reference
I purchased this book by accident, actually. I already had the Handybook for Genealogists and considered the two to be too close in content to justify the expenditure. I received an offer for the purchase of the Red Book at a discount and jumped on it, only to realize later what I had done. I thought about returning it, once it arrived.

However, after sitting down and doing a side-by-side comparison of the two books, I realized that there is some very different information between the two. Both are quite useful, and if I ever question information in one (come on, that's what we DO) I have a second source to confirm the first. I find myself reaching for this book time after time, and not just to confirm info from the Handybook. There are certain things I find easier to understand in the Red Book, not to mention the different perspective offered.

This book is, simply put, indispensible!

The RED BOOK Bible
Genealogists receive initial contact addresses for records in all 50 states and an idea of what information is kept where! I have used mine to pieces. However it's due for an update to include emails and websites.

Ancestry's Red Book
The best genealogy source book I have found. Took it with me on vacation and it was great.

Bead Art
This is not a "how-to" book, but shows the bead work of many artists. These works were featured at the Beadworks '98 exhibit at the Dairy Barn, the Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center.

Chris Allen-Wickler covers rocks with peyote stitch, leaving holes here and there. Kenneth A Arthur uses brass shells and plumbing parts to make a sculpture he calls "My Dad's Drawer." Joann Baumann found a use for her old Nymo beading thread bobbins, using the bobbins as beads. Several artists give credit to Joyce Scott for encouraging their fearless use of beads.

Our San Antonio Bead and Ornament Society member Alison F Whittemore found a use for all of her extra beads and tiny treasures. She covered a beanpot with them. I hope she buys raffle tickets for our bead jar. She would have a blast coming up with a use for that eclectic mix.

Spectacular, Inspirational
This is a truly spectacular book. The artwork ranges from the elegantly beautiful to the bizarre & quite humorous. All the photographs are in vibrant full-color & are printed on glossy stock. The book starts out with a brief history of beads. Each item is described with details on how it was made. Background information on the artists is also included.

One of my favorite pieces is a sampler of 9 tiny toys made of seed beads. I feel in the love with the many gorgeous decorated dress forms, jewelry & masks. The beaded beads & eggs are adorable.

There is nude woman sitting on a cow & eating a banana. In another a green woman lifts weights. I had to laugh when I saw a doll standing doll on her head and an old lady with a funky perm.

Bead Art Inspires
I saw this book at an artists' booth at an art fair in Madison, WI. last July. I was so impressed with the artist and the book that I am ordering it. It is an exquisite look at contemporay beadwork...very inspirational.
