Fishermen's Sweaters: 20 Exclusive Knitwear Designs for All Generations
Published in Hardcover by Peter Smith Pub (June, 2001)

Excellent book
Alice Starmore is the authority when it comes to Aran knitting and this book demonstrates that. The pictures are gorgeous and the directions for the projects are well done. So, get inspired and make one of these!

Who wouldn't love to wear any of these sweaters?
Alice Starmore is a knit designer who is reknown for her colorwork (Fairisle type--she hails from Lerwick, Scotland) and for her textured Aran and Guernsey-style work. Here she creates some glorious textured sweaters in chapters named after lands where fisherfolk live, work and yes, knit their characteristic designs. The chapters include:

1. Scotland
2. England
3. Ireland (including the Aran Isles)
4. Points North, South and East (including Breton, Norway and the Baltic lands and the Faroes)
5. The New World (hey, that's US!! Nova Scotia, Cape Cod, and more.)

The sweaters range from the thickly cabled true Aran style (the gorgeous Innishmore is incredibly deep and intricate) to colorwork such as a combination of textures and pattern characteristic of Estonian knitting. There is also an adorable child's sweater modeled after a Breton sailor's striped jersey.

This is one of Starmore's most useful books. The sweaters could be worn by men, children, fashionable women, hikers, you name it. If you love TEXTURE, you will adore this, but there is also color. In addition to the designs I just mentioned, I love the charming "Nova Scotia" featuring scallop shells in a knit-purl design.

This is one of my favorite Starmore books.

The Catch of the Day!
I am new to Aran kniting. The detailed, close up pictures of the sweaters show very clearly how the stitches should appear. The charts are easy to follow, and Starmore's general directions in the back of the book are a bonus. Sweaters are featured in light to heavy yarns. The fibers range from cotton, silk, wool or a combination. My sample knitted swatches have been sucessful.

Whoa.
I've never read poetry this honest, this heart-wrenching, this intense, this passionate, this realistic, this humorous, this painful... I could go on for ages, but it would turn into drooling dribble. Olds is amazingly talented. Her work is graphic, as real life is, and not to be taken lightly. Buy it, commit to reading it, appreciate her world view.

you need this
Emily Dickinson once said something to the extent of, that when she felt that the top of her head had been taken off, she knew that was true poetry. That's how I felt while reading The Gold Cell, and I assure you, that's a great thing. This is an incredibly powerful read and well worth your time.

An Exhilarating Read, But Not For Everyone. . .
Sharon Olds delves deeply into the heart of what it means to be human in her collection of poems, "The Gold Cell." I am continually amazed as to how she deals with taboo subjects, such as sex, religion, and morality, with direct and shockingly vivid language. In this particular collection of poems, Olds uses the image of blood to represent various motifs; the blood between family ties, its relation to sex and the body, and even the patriotic sense and the "Americaness" of blood. Using this single word, Olds is able to create an infinite number of images and meanings that go far beyond the common notion that blood is what supplies the body with life. This is by far one of the most influential books of poetry that I have encountered in my career. I do not recommend it to those who are squimish or who are prone to heart-failure at the mention of the word "sex" or "penis." While most of her poems are alluring and evocative, many will shock you with their unabashed treatment of sensitive subjects. For those of you who wish to divulge into the mind of what it means to be human, I whole-heartedly recommend this collection of poetry. Olds' poems not only examine what it means to be human but what it means to be moral beings. Prepare for a journey that will reveal the emotional and raw psychology of the human mind.

Good for Carroll Fans
I hardly ever buy nonfiction but seeing this at Borders I knew I had to have it. Lewis Carrol is one of the greatest writers of the nineteenth century, surpassing even Tolstoy,Dostoevsky, and Dickens. I have a complete collection of all of his works and enjoy them all(except for the math puzzles, math has never been my strongest point.) If you are a fan of Lewis Carroll then this is the book for you. Gorgous illustrations and photographs, an interesting and informative text, this is a wonderful little book to own. It is also informative if you are interested in Victorian England such as Iam (probably due to my Lewis Carroll fixation) There are also examples of Lewis Carrolls photography and pictures of the Liddle children. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the world of Alice and who is obsessed with Mr. Dodgson's books.

Exceptional!
A small in size book, being about 5 x 6. It is printed on glossy paper with many photographs. It is an exceptional buy for the amount of money tendered. If you read anything by Mr. Carroll you have to have this book too. Mr. Carroll's work is a must for anyone writing anything. The simple truth is his writing means nothing as far as plot, but his style is brilliant.

Is there anyone out there that knows what the name of the writing style used by Mr. Carroll. For instance his characters are telling a story to someone small Mr. Carroll aims his text at a small animal. The small animal answers back in small type. When someone is running and talking, there are long drawn out sentences.

Content and presentation are excellent.
This book provides a well written description of the conditions and environment that led to the writing of the Alice books. The reader is immersed in Victorian culture both verbally and visually. The profusely illustrated book is a joy to read and informative as well. It fills the niche between biography and textual analysis.

Great story
Funny autobiography. A must-have for avid Alice Cooper fans.

Alice Rocks
I read this book on the internet. After reading it I was hungover for a week while consuming no alchohol that week. This book has lots of interesting information on the Alice Cooper band. Particulary from the mid to late 60's Before they hit it big. this book shows that bands today are no match for the A.C. Band. Also show's music at its most interesting time when Bands were aloud to have fun being a rock stars. The A.C. Band achieved this in spades while keeping the integrity of their raw, organic sound unlike popular music today. This book is like a welcome passport to that time and revisit a great band gone but not forgotten.

IT IS THE BEST!!!!!!
I am a huge fan of Alice and Me, Alice is a great book to read if you're like me. It tells you about his childhood and about his adulthood. I think all Alice lovers should read this book.

THE answer book about miscarriages
When I was asked to review this book, I didn't give it a second thought. I myself have a personal connection with this subject. When my daughter was almost 3 years old, after being pregnant for the first time since she was born, I had a miscarriage.

There are so many questions surrounding the reasons for miscarriages - what causes them; can they be prevented; is there a way to lower the risks of having another...? Answers to these and other compelling questions are best discussed in the book, "Miscarriage: Why It Happens and How Best to Reduce Your Risks," by Henry M. Lerner, M.D. I thought I had known all there was to know about miscarriages, but this book truly opened my eyes and gave me much more information.

Miscarriages are a common occurrence, happening in 1 out of 5 pregnancies, and for a number of reasons. Some of what this book discusses: what exactly is a miscarriage; reasons miscarriages occur; the role of infections and the environment in causing miscarriages. It discusses past and current research studies and its results, and even answered a few myths I had believed to be true (see pg 53 for timing sex for a boy or girl; and pg 120 for microwave oven exposure).

MyParenTime highly recommends this book -- besides personally answering some questions I had about my own miscarriage, this informative book touched upon so many areas and explained the topic of miscarriage in terms we can all understand. To anyone who has experienced the devastation of a miscarriage, and to those just looking for information...this book has it all.

strong insightful guidebook
Even if there is no need for emergency surgery afterward, a miscarriage leaves behind quite a bundle of mostly negative feelings on the part of the mother and even that of the father. Most people when hearing of a miscarriage react with sympathy towards the parents. However, the parents, especially the mother, guiltily wonders if something she did caused this traumatic event. The mother and to a lesser degree the father is the target that author Dr. henry G. Lerner wants to help. He responds to the self-incriminating questions often asked such as what did I do wrong? Dr. Lerner with contributions by Dr. Domar provide practical advice on how to reduce the odds of preventing a miscarriage from happening again and how to cope with the depression that is sure to come if a miscarriage occurred.

This book is lucid and well written for a wannabe parent to understand yet treats mothers and fathers as intelligent people just lacking information on a "taboo" subject that no one wants to talk about. Dr. Lerner provides insightful information on avoidance and as important how to deal with the deep guilt that will follow if a miscarriage happens. The key to this enlightening nonfiction work is the advice provided to both parents for the forgotten father will feel doubt, depression, and lack of confidence as to what to do for his ailing spouse and his own psyche. MISCARRIAGE: WHY IT HAPPENS AND HOW BEST TO REDUCE YOUR RISKS--A DOCTOR'S GUIDE TO THE FACTS is a strong insightful guidebook.

Harriet Klausner

A thorough, helpful book
This is an excellent guide to preventing, coping with, and surviving miscarriage. Dr. Lerner covers all of the important information, and even includes a chapter on the emotional repercussions of miscarriage. I would recommend it for anyone who has had a miscarriage.

The Silver Pencil
The book was given to me by my cousin, Haley. I needed to do a book report on a book for school and I came across it. So I did it for a book report. I thought it was a wonderful book and very exciting to see what might happen next.

Janet is the main character and lives in Trinidad but then she moves to England. Her father gives her a silver pencil for Christmas. After Christmas, her father dies. She was very sad. She came to America to attended college to become a kindergarden teacher. She wrote a story with her silver pencil and got it published. She liked to write and wrote many stories.

It was a very interesting book and one that one would not want to put down. I recommend this book to teenagers as well as younger children who love to read. It would be an encouragement to anyone who likes to write stories.

A very fascinating book to read.
This book involves a girl named Janet. She expierences a death of her father. She also loves to write. This story based on Janet desciribes how her life begins at age nine reading the book Little Women ending older as being a teacher reading the same book, but with a whole different prespective. This book of my opinion is a wonderful book for all ages wanting to have a good book in there hands.

I read this book and it is a great book!
This book is a great book. It deals with a lot of good situations. The little girl is an extremly good writer. She moves from her home to scotland with her mother after the death of her father. Then they move back to England and she moves to Americia to become a teacher. There she moves in with a family and falls in love with the oldest son Stephen. Then they have to try and keep their love a secret.

Excellent Book
I found this book to be very informative. There are two books that I would recommend to every person experiencing infertility. This one and the new book, What to Expect When You're NOT Expecting. ... I hope this review will make a difference and that's you'd read both books and be on your way to coping with infertility.

Absolutely incredible!!! Definitely a "MUST READ"!!!
I'm not the most avid reader in my house, that title belongs to my husband. This book was definitely the exception! To use my husband's words, I completely devoured this book!

Every issue I had dealing with PCOS and with Trying To Conceive was dealt with in this book. The book is very easy to read, very easy to understand, and is incredible! You can really tell that Alice Domar knows exactly what she's talking about, and really has been counseling couples dealing with these same issues - they were the exact same issues we had been dealing with, and for someone to put it into words as wonderfully as she has...it was very enlightening.

Everyone who is trying to conceive and has PCOS MUST read this book as soon as possible.

Thanks millions Alice!!!

An informative, helpful, supportive book
What an incredible book. It is filled with tips, information, and advice for the woman facing infertility. It covers all aspects of the emotional struggle that women must cope with when they can't get pregnant--everything from advice on how to cope when everyone else but you gets pregnant, to information about how husbands and wives handle infertility in very different ways. It taught me so much. I also liked the clear, thorough descriptions of how to do relaxation exercises. And I loved reading the stories from real people who have coped with infertility. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is having trouble getting pregnant.

The Light of the Soul, Its Science and Effects: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali with Commentary by Alice A. Bailey

The Light of the Soul
This book is a paraphrasing of the "Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali," as understood by Alice Bailey. The Sutras are the basis of Raja Yoga, which is the Science of the Soul, hence the title, "The Light of the Soul." The 51 Sutras are explained in Book I. Book II consists of a description of the steps that lead to Union, i.e., the means of attaining that state which has been traditionally called the "mystical union" in Christian faiths. The results of this Union are shared in Book III by explaining another 55 Sutras. The last Book, # IV, is by far the most difficult to understand since it treats of ILLUMINATION, a state unattainable by man. The 4 Books are bound into one: "The Light of the Soul."

The Science of the Path
The Light of the Soul is a very able translation and commentary on the teachings of one of the greatest spiritual teachers the world has seen - Patanjali. The book will be of vital interest to those who have found the reality of the spiritual path within themselves.

The Light of the Soul consists of 4 books of sutras, each book being a continuation of the teaching of the last book. The teaching covers the greater part of that path, starting from when we first recognise its existence. The entire approach of the sutras is a mental and deeply spiritual one. It outlines the practical, though inner, steps that the spiritual seeker must take in order to move from one point to the next. Much of the text is about how to spiritualise the mind (and our entire self using the mind correctly) and prepare ourselves for this spiritual transformation.

That all this is in abbreviated form in one book is a test for those who would study it, as it takes a great sense of proportion, discipline and gentle patience to tread the path with care and a sense of direction and purpose at each point. It is too easy (and fruitless) to flit here to there, grasping some interesting ideas, and then moving on again.

The sutras are to be taken as objects for our deepest contemplation and by no means should the reader limit themselves to the commentary given. The commentary is there as a guide only, for those who find it helpful.

The Light of the Soul is an explanation of how to make this divine light a living, practical reality in our lives. No spiritual person, truly interested in treading the spiritual path, should be without this book.

An esoteric interpretation of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
A thorough and unique interpretation of Patanjali. This is a reference work that should be studied. Also, some degree of understanding of esotericism is assumed. Possibly it should be supplemented with an alternative, like Iyengar's. Personally, I find it one of the most practical treatises on meditation.

A must!
Lists to live by is a must have. Great for any collector or someone looking for a quick inspiration. This book is a keeper for all time. I recommend keeping in the living room for a quick peek now and then. I keep it to remind me there are good things in life and to help me be a better person, religious or not it will enlighten you.

A book I would read over and over
When I bought this book, I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed reading this book because it's full of lists which made semse to me and gave me a perspective on what is important to me. The lists are valuable with meaning and thought provoking. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading lists.

Just what everyone needs!
I am not a reader by all means, but I am beginning to be. I have enjoyed reading this book so much, that I want to share it with all my Family and friends, but this is not a book you can let someone borrow because you will never get it back (lots of laughes), you will want to own it, so you can go back and read it over and over. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Simply Alice

A Bit Disappointed
Am I getting too old for Alice? Or have I just been exposed to higher quality YA fiction that makes this book a tad... one dimensional?

This is not a bad book. But for the first time, I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the other ones in the series. Maybe I need to reread them to try and remember them better to get into the Alice groove.

Newly single, Alice throws herself into a multitude of extra curricular activities to get involved, make new friends and stop herself from missing Patrick. Complications arise when Pamela and Elizabeth are jealous Alice isn't spending as much time with them. To tell the truth, Alice and her friends sounded kind of shallow this time around. And the author's attempt at working in new information to help girls learn about their bodies felt very forced (oh, let's just casually talk about ovaries in the cafeteria).

I love all the characters dearly, and will probably continue reading this series because of that, but in my opinion, this book felt like it was missing something. It still makes me laugh, just not as much as I remember laughing at the earlier volumes. And we're still wondering who Lester will end up with (and Alice for that matter).

Simply Alice: Simply Wonderful
When you read Simply Alice, it leaves your thinking and wanting to read another book from the Alice series. Alice is a 14 year old, almost 15 year old, freshman that is experiencing all the adventures of high school, friends, and family. Simply Alice was an absolutely wonderful book. I think this is a great book to read because just when you think its getting boring something comes up that amazes you. This is a book that you can really relate to and also not relate to. I can relate to her problems with her friends family and with school. Though most people probably won't go through some of the things Alice goes through. It's sometimes though hard to believe that Alice isn't real, the way the author expresses her emotions are so clear you would think that Alice wrote it herself. You can almost see every detail laid out before you because of how well she describes things.
There are some things about the book that I didn't especially like. I thought the book always had a lot going on in it. It never just focused on one thing; it focused on many things all at the same time. In a way, that's sometimes how real life is, too.
I really like watching Alice grow up and opened herself to new things. This was a wonderful book with a great plot, and I am excited to read many more of these books!

Another wonderful book in the series
Being a true, devoted Alice fan, I was both surprised and happy when this book showed up on my door step. I hadn't read an "Alice" book in what seemed like years, but Phyllis Reynolds Naylor swings right back into action like you never even left for a moment.

This semester, Alice is faced with many new situations. Being a "single" for the first time in a long time, Alice finds she doesn't have time for half the things she used to. With Patrick out of the way and Pam and Liz doing their own things, Alice is left feeling confused. With her newspaper job and her interest in stage crew, the audience is taken on wonderful journey that leds Alice to a whole new side of life.

Lester has found new love, Alice a new admirer, her Dad a new hobby and we have front row seats.

Overall, this book was just as good, if not better, than all the other Alice books and I am already counting the days until the next one is released. I recomended this to anyone (and it probablly helps if you have read the other books first!)
