Little Known history
In this book four men from very different backgrounds tell the story of how they were won to the Cuban Revolution and devoted their lives to defending it. In the first interview you'll get a fresh perspective on the question of land mines and the never-before-revealed story of how Cubans training in the SovieUnion reacted to the October 1962 Missile Crisis. It just gets better after that.

Revolucionarios cubanos y norteamericanos platican
Revolucionarios cubanos y norteamericanos platican

Cuban revolutionaries still fighting
When these generals published their longer memoirs, it caused a sensation in Cuba. We learned of how they were won to the revolution, and of struggles of Cuban soldiers from the Bay of Pigs, to Bolivia, from America to Vietnam, and in Cuba itself. Those memoirs and these interviews are a clear sign that the Cuban revolution and its leadership, especially the armed forces that the US has tried to get to subvert the revolution were holding true to the revolution, and they explained some previously unknown achievements of the Cuban military. Read these interviews, done by Socialist activists from the US, and see why. The interviews in this book explain the stories of the leaders of Cuba's armed forces, the stories of fighters who changed themselves and the world and continue to want to fight.

Walker Convert
Reading Alice Walker reviews here on Amazon is highly annoying. Either they praise her to the skies, scouring any who react with an analytical response, or they attack her for the racial simplicities that some see as marring her work (those who get annoyed by her "white folk have no rhythm" trope). Both extremes have not been very useful for promoting *my* greater understanding of her work--I see the talent seething, squirming in her--but through many books, there were twists in her choices that alienated her talent to me.

Simply put, this book that convinced me Alice is a Talent with a capital "T". She starts with a lovely preface, "In keeping faith with Poetry's honest help to me, I have not deleted or changed--beyond a word or two--anything I have written, though greatly tempted at times to do so. The young self, the naive promiscuous self, appear doubly vulnerable now, in light of my unexpected bonus of years, and the experience they have brought me. I embrace them all, as Poetry embraced me..." From there, she follows with some beautiful, beautiful poetry, speaking to the struggle to develop and improve as an artist.

There are mis-steps, irritations. "There are no tigers/in Africa!/You say./Frowning./Yes. I say./Smiling./But they are/very beautiful." doesn't do much for me. I prefer my evocations of Africa without this almost Disney-esque gloss of "all cool primitive things we'll embrace as African."

Cumulatively, however--the poems are terrific. It's not often that I read through an entire volume of poetry without putting it down. Read this book for all its warts and missteps--and glory in it for its terrific human achievement.

Surrounded With Inspiration
Startled to find so many poems that resonated in my own life, I copied many down and posted them around by room. Each provides a meditation on a different theme, from death to distraction, affairs of the heart to hunger and the nagging, geographic pull to home. When I give my speech at graduation next week, it will end with "The Nature Of This Flower Is To Bloom," thanks to Alice Walker.

Great Compilation
I love the structure of her poems. She writes for those who have forgotten how things used to be with African American life and struggles. My favorite section in the book is from "Revolutionary Petunias" and "Willie Lee." Walker has been an inspiration for me in writing poetry. I love her use of imagery in her free verse. It was commented that Walker relies too much on her relationships in her personal friendships in her writing. But I disagree. I propose that no one should read her poetry without reading her autobiography of her past. Most poets will create an illusion of situations, but Walker alludes to her past and speaks the truth to us all. I hope she sees this because I've always wanted to talk with her and ask her about the things I have written, but I am in the process of challenging myself to want the reader to feel something in a meter that they can feel but not see. Then THATS incredible. Nice work Ms. Walker

Funny pairing of liberated female and stuffy male
Christina Mayhew is a silent-screen actress in Hollywood of 1913. Though a very successful leading lady, for her, acting is simply a way to earn the large amount of money she needs to pay for medical school. Martin Tafft is the producer of her latest film and very much her match in intellect, ambition and personal strength.

Martin is extremely disappointed to learn that Christina is leaving the industry after this film wraps. He had very much hoped to work on future projects with the beautiful, young actress. She is one of the most talented--and most exciting--women he has ever known.

Christina is very attracted to Martin, and when she realizes that his admiration for her is more than simply professional, she determines to proceed as a liberated, independent woman and propose to him that he be her very first affair.

Gentlemanly Martin is shocked to his polished shoe tips at Christina's scandalous offer. He is adamantly opposed to sex outside marriage, tells Christina so, and remains stiffly withdrawn from her until an accident injuring the leading man forces Martin to take over his role. Soon Martin and Christina are sharing kisses on the set so heated, it becomes impossible for Martin to resist extending those kisses into his and Christina's private lives.

The setting of HER LEADING MAN is fascinating, and so authentically drawn, reading it delightfully transported me to the world of early Hollywood. The liberated heroine and the stiff, moralistic hero are a great pair of comic opposites, and the heroine's outrageous grandmother provides a lot of laughs, too. The love scenes between Martin and Christina are very emotional and very hot--I really love stories where a repressed hero finally lets go to the cauldron of passion inside him, because the heroine is utterly irresistible to him.

Add this one to your keeper shelf -- Very highly recommended
Film director Martin Tafft grows increasingly disillusioned with the industry. When he began in 1904, he believed that the brilliant creation of motion pictures would be the salvation of humanity, spanning the differences between people to allow them to see the commonalities. Instead, the industry deteriorates into a slough of immorality and decadence. He still has hopes that when "talkies" come into their own actors and actresses will be forced to spend their evenings learning their lines rather than wildly carousing the town.

Martin's newest leading lady Christina is made of a different ilk than most actresses seeking stardom. She sees acting as a means to an end. Rejected from scholarships because she's female, she intends to earn sufficient funds to pursue her dreams of a medical degree. To protect her reputation and run interference, she brings her Grandmother to the set as a chaperone. The elderly Mrs. Mayhew, Gran, provides marvelous comic relief with her high-spirited ways and obnoxious remarks. Christina calls her an Egalitarian because "she treated everyone like dirt." Although Christine prides herself on her independence, it helps to have someone with a reputation for hardhead ness and a nasty disposition on her side.

Martin's latest project is an Egyptian epic based on the bible. But when his loathsome lead breaks his arm trying to ride a camel, Martin finds himself stepping into the part. Despite the strong chemistry between Martin and Christina, he's not prepared for her out spoken ways when states that she wants to make love with him. Rather than flattered, he's outraged because he considers her perspective to be repetitious of the deterioration of the morals of the industry. He doesn't perceive her outspokenness to be a natural part of her independence and honesty. Now they must act together in the roles of lovers, and as the heat increases on screen, it likewise threatens a conflagration off screen. Especially when their passion takes control, but the moralistic Martin wants marriage and the determined Christina wants a medical career.

The entire Dream Maker miniseries has been a huge success, culminating in THE LEADING MAN. Indeed, the early years of the motion picture industry with its rapid changes has provided a fascinating background beautifully captured by author Alice Duncan's talented pen. Further, Duncan has a flair for creating both unconventional and unorthodox characters that really grab the imagination. Christina, like each of her predecessors, possesses strength of character and a gentle vulnerability that makes her markedly appealing. Martin, who's been a background character of each book, finally gets the story he so richly deserves. His concerns regarding the moral character of his industry span the decades, making him a surprisingly contemporary hero. Very highly recommended.

Dekightful romance
Though a very talented actress and in spite of thinking the film industry is a waste of energy, suffragette Christina Mayhew performs in the movies to finance her life's dream of going to medical school and becoming a doctor. To earn her tuition as she already has acceptance from a school, Christina performs in the latest movie produced by Martin Tafft for Peerless Studios on location.

Martin is an idealist, but is frustrated with all the negative publicity the young Hollywood industry seems to produce. Thus he finds the intelligent Christina with her accompanying escort, her grandmother, quite refreshing to say the least. Christina soon finds Martin not only her intellectual equal but surprisingly he encourages her to use her intelligence rather than pretend to be a vacuous pretty babe. They begin to fall in love, but Martin's codes of ethics involving people working for him seem like a roadblock to any permanent relationship between them.

Alice Duncan's entire "Dream Maker" series has been a delightful look at the first decade of the movie industry, but this novel is by far the best of a wonderful collection because this is Martin's story. Martin has been a key secondary player in the previous novels and readers (except perhaps this reviewer) have patiently awaited his venture into love. The story line is insightful, but also loaded with fun as Christina realizes that she must persuade HER LEADING MAN to reach for the stars with her.

Hermaphrodites and the Medical Invention of Sex
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (04 March, 2000)

an important book
I consider myself an "enlightened" feminist and of course I believe that gender is socially constructed, but I still had a lot to learn from this book. It's not just that gender is socially constructed, but sex itself: nothing is "natural." Nothing -- not chromasomes, genitals, nor secondary sex characteristics like breasts, facial hair, body hair, and voice -- has meaning until we ascribe it a meaning. Doctors and the medical profession have participated in the social construction of gender and sex by creating the hermaphrodite as a monstrosity that deviates from binary norms rather than as a part of a continuum of sex and gender.

Dreger's book focuses on the collision of hermaphrodites with the medical profession in 19th century Britain and France, a time period when feminists and homosexuals were beginning to challenge sexual boundries. Dreger sucessfully balences stories of individuals with the larger social context. Also, she never resorts to euphemisms, and the accompanying photographs are something that is missing from the standard human anatomy textbook. We should see and appreciate humanity in all its infinite variety and not force anyone to conform to a constructed "norm."

Dreger's final chapter explores the plight of the intersexed in contemporary America. If we are truely to "celebrate diversity," we are going to have to become educated about the millions of intersexed in this country and become sensitive to their issues... because they are issues that concern us all.

Amazing!
This book is wonderful! It gives a tremendous amount of insight to the intersexed. A must for anyone interested in the history of sexuality.

Exposes cultural imperative disguised as medical necessity
The history of the clinical management of intersex has previously been relegated to medical texts- texts which illuminate technologies to "treat" intersex while ignoring the experience of the recipients of such protocols. Alice Dreger's book unveils the identities of those who heretofore have appeared in textbook photographs and illustrations with their genitals in sharp focus but with their faces obscured. In the process, Dreger reveals how medicine has often tragically subordinated what is between the patient's ears and in the patient's heart to what is between the patient's legs. While physicians would be well-served to incorporate the information and perspectives Dreger offers, the book should appeal to a far larger audience because it challenges the reader's assumption that sex is like Carvel (two flavors only) when in reality it is Baskins & Robbins.

I learned so much!
I'm a huge Star Wars fan who was greatly disappointed by The Phantom Menace. However, this small childrens book offers all the detail and backstory to Queen Amidala that was missing in the film. We learn how this 14 year old got to be Queen, the names of her handmaidens and advisors, and most interestingly, the significance of her unusual makeup. All this is presented with beautiful, bright, color pictures, and text that is easy for young readers to comprehend. The clever set up, that Queen Amidala told this story to Alica Alfonsi (the author) who just transcibed it for our enjoyment makes it seem all the more real. This book accomplishes something the film doesn't even pretend to care about, making Queen Amidala human, a person we care about. I recomend this to anyone who liked the film, or is interested in learning more about Amidala. No matter their age.

Another Wonderful Star Wars book for children
This book, like the others in this series (I am a Droid and I am a Jedi), combines stunning graphic design with a carefully written narrative to create a book that appeals to a very wide age range.

My three year old niece is fascinated by this book. The large photos give her lots of detail to examine, and the text suggests that being a Queen requires devotion, intelligence, and bravery. Most movie tie-in books are just plain cheesy. The Random House SW line is a real exception. This is a classy, classy book with a message that I can enthusiastically support.

While my niece is younger than the suggested age range, older kids should also find this book fascinating. I also recommend the book to older Star Wars fans; the graphics are stunning and you'll learn more about Amidala. All in all, a terrific job for all ages!

I AM A QUEEN Great for Kids and Star Wars Enthusiasts
This storybook is written by Queen Amidala and she tells allabout her life, where she lives, what she travels in, who helps herbring peace to her planet, her age, clothing, and many of the people in her life, including her 5 handmaidens. The book is loaded with great pictures taken from the movie and photoshoots. It is a great investment.

This book does make a difference!
The glorious color photos and stories have inspired me to meet the craftswomen. I took the book with me on assignment in Guatemala with women weavers and watched the delight and pride from the weavers as they enjoyed the pictures of women like themselves. Each story is a challenge to all of us to seek out these crafts and use them in our daily lives. The well written stories by Paola and the personal essays by Toby are inspirational. They captured the reality of life and the possibilities. I left my copy in Guatemala and just ordered two more as gifts. This is a beautiful book.

A wonderful holiday gift for all my female friends
In Her Hands: Craftswomen Changing the World is a gorgeous photojournalistic volume about women around the world who make indigenous crafts. The crafts, varied and wonderful as they are, are sold at market so that the women can have an income stream to improve their economic situation. Money earned this way is most often used to pay for children's education and improved nutrition. These are often women who live in abject poverty, many without the help of income-generating husbands, who are passionate about giving their children better lives. One admires their focus, their intelligence, and the joy with which they live their lives, as documented by the two author/photographers, Paola Gianturco and Toby Tuttle. This is a wonderful coffee-table sized book with glorious images for anyone who loves crafts, travel, photography and for anyone who thinks and cares about the lives of women around the world. Well-done! I've already bought three!

Truly Great Book!

Amazing photography and unique insight into far lands and distant peoples. "In Her Hands" takes you on a journey to the places you've always wanted to go and into the lives of the people you wish you'd meet when you travel. Women around the world, working to create art and improve their lives. No flashy get-rich-quick success stories, no explosive dot-com egos, but real people who truly earn their success, day by day. The book deals fairly and honestly with complex issues of traditional societies around the world, as women invest their own money in the education of their children and change their local economies.

Beautiful, color-rich images help tell the tale all along. Like photography from LIFE magazine or National Geo, the photos make stories of In Her Hands almost leap from the page.

I highly recommend this to anyone and will be buying many copies as gifts for the holidays!

Everything old is new again! Exercise a new passion.
Alice Hoffman has uncovered a forgotten piece of American history and inspired me to begin collecting Indian clubs. Hoffman has written an informative book complete with stunning photographs and personal reflections.

Indian clubs now prized for their sculptural, artistic merits were once a must for every man, women, and child who hoped to obtain physical and spiritual well-being in the late 19th, early 20th century.

It's amazing to learn that Indian clubs were once thought to be an exercise that would stand the test of time. Hoffman has shown they have, not as muscle builders but as a collectible.

If you're interested in learning something new and not afraid of becoming an Indian club collecting addict as I have since reading this book, I suggest you order Indian Clubs today.

A new discovery-everything old is new!
Excellent resource for serious collectors and the curious. Photographs are inspirational. Can't wait to start my own collection. Historical information very comprehensive. Good read as well as informative.

Confirms there is a new "exercise" in folk art collecting!
A wonderful read...informative.Photographs are ready for framing. Definitely will inspire you to begin to collect Indian clubs. As stated by Gerard Wertkin, Director, Museum of American Folk Art, "(Alice Hoffman) has recovered an all but forgotten subchapter in the history of American sport and, at the same time, helped us appreciate another aspect of American artistic creativity. Hats off to her!" I agree with Mr. Wertkin and the following reviews: Antiques & Auction News, "A colorful exercise in collecting,"..."documents the "life" of this colorful and practical form of exercise...a charming addition to any antiques library." Antique & Collectibles News Service, "Inside Antiques, Good Reading,"..."we love (this) book...a folk art gem." The Star Ledger, NJ, "A new life for Indian clubs,"..."new coffee table book...If TV infomercials had been around in their heyday, chances are the physical fitness mavens of the day would have been pitching Indian clubs in the same way abs machines and treadmills are endlessly hawked now."

Vastness of Being
This book was the first written of the 24 books by Alice Bailey. As such, this book addresses some essential spiritual and esoteric ideas. Its theme is that of initiation, or spiritual crisis--moments of spiritual realisation and evolutionary change. In many ways this theme is the centre and essence of all spiritual study, because the spiritual crises, or initiations, that all beings experience are the great moments of their existence and, in many ways, embody and express the purpose and meaning and quality of that existence.

The book also touches on the life of the disciple (person consciously treading the path) and the two main stages of the spiritual path, the later stage being called the Path of Initiation.

The book contains a fair amount of esoteric and technical detail of the processes whereby initiations are undergone. Whilst these technicalities can be evocative and inspiring to some readers, for those who would not find it so, it nevertheless presents an expansive view of the vastness of Life, and the amazing interconnectedness of, and purpose behind, all things living.

Initiation Human and Solar
The various stages along the path of initiation are explained in this book. What is initiation? Who initiates? Who is initiated? Surprising answers are available at the hand of Alice Bailey, answers that are not found in traditional, religious texts nor at the foot of pulpits, although the book does conclude with "An esoteric catechism."

This book is a cornerstone for New Age philosophy.
This book adds a truly remarkable insight into the previously stated but obscure theosophical texts on initiation. It is non-sectarian and inclusive of all people in its approach. It seeks to expound facts about human life and in some sense it is a forerunner of many New Age philosophies and groups' belief systems. It is a crucial key for the modern disciple's understanding.

Extremely helpful
After reading the book you and your husband wrote on Intercessors and Pastors I had to write and thank you for the tremendous work the Holy Spirit did through you. From the first chapter to the last, it captivated my entire being until it was read from cover to cover. You answered so many questions that had come up and even covered many questions that my mind could not yet think, but felt.

In the few pages prior to the chapter, Understanding Your Intercessor, you mentioned that a church prayed over some names in the telephone directory and had amazing results. Is it possible to talk to the person that was in charge of that project? We would like to likewise have this exercise in faith at our church. Already it is easy to see how it would totally revolutionize every ministry, seeing God's might power through effective, fervent prayer.

It thrilled my heart to hear Pastor say last Wednesday, "I want our house to be known as a house of prayer." How God is using your book to help influence our ministry. Thank you for your love for God, your deep devotion to Him and for allowing Him to make you what you are in Christ.

More than a book on prayer
My husband and I are the "Prayer Leaders" in our church. My husband and then my pastor are in line to read your book. I have read many books in the past year (I'm a student at WLI in Colorado Springs) - Your book is at the top of the list of all of the books I've read (Jack Deere, C.P.Wagner, J.I. Packer, Bonner, Sheets, etc.) Maybe it's because God had a divine appt. with me in the pages of this book; I don't know, but I am telling everyone I know what an impact it has made on my walk with God, not only as an intercessor but as a child of God. Your chapter "Let the Healing Begin" spoke to me re: my broken relationship with my parents. God has been leading me down a path to reconciliation with them and with this chapter Holy Spirit led me at a fast pace much closer to the anticipated time. I was humbled and broken after realizing that I am the one required to pay the price of humility and maybe even humiliation. I look forward, even long to, literally washing my parent's feet. I feel that I am at the door of reconciliation now and God is going to give me the key any day to open it up and walk through. Two Sundays ago the Lord asked me: "why do you want to reconcile with them?" I answered, "Because they are my parents and I love them and want to be in fellowship with them." He asked me again, "why do you want to reconcile?" I answered, "because it is the Christian thing to do, and, because my entire family is disconnected and this will begin the reuniting" Once again, God asked and I said, "Oh, Lord, because I want to know you more." The Lord said to me, "Yes, now we can move forward and do what needs to be done." He wanted me to see that although my other answers were good and Biblical - it was my relationship with Him that had to be the number one priority for everything I do. And now I think I know what leads people like you and Chuck Pierce and many others into the battles you march into. I believe that knowing Him more is the result of each one. The victory is sweet and the souls that are saved are joy but knowing Him more is the cry of our hearts. This book is about knowing God and in knowing Him and being made complet in Him we can move into the right relationship with intercessors, pastors, and more.

Please Read This Book!
I was stunned to learn from a trusted prayer leader that the division between pastors and intercessors is worldwide. I thought it just existed in my city. That's why I bought the book. I have had quite a lot to learn to understand why the division exists and now see it largely as an issue of control, something the authors point out that God never gave away to either pastors or to intercessors. What an obvious place for the enemy to erect a wall, for we vitally need one another. Together, the power of the church will finally be released. This book is magnificent in its accessibility to a topic that has mystified me. I found it immensely practical. The authors' tenderness and humility show through on every page.

Intersex in the Age of Ethics (Ethics in Clinical Medicine Series)
Published in Paperback by University Publishing Group (22 June, 1999)
Author: Alice Domurat Dreger
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

Review Submitted to the Publisher
"The range of ethical issues that arise in regard to the treatment of intersex infants, children, and adults is richly representative of clinical healthcare ethics generally. By incorporating the perspective of patients and their stories into its account, however, INTERSEX IN THE AGE OF ETHICS does more than introduce the questions of healthcare ethics in microcosm. It also leads the readers to examine the effect of ethical reflection on the lives of patients. INTERSEX IN THE AGE OF ETHICS is a model, in both senses of this word, of what thoughtful healthcare ethics reflection can accomplish. It embodies a conceptual model of ethical reflection that leads the reader to pose the right questions and to respond to them with patients' lives in mind. And it is a model in the evaluative sense--excellent, admirable, and deserving of imitation."

A book with lessons for everyone
This is not only a book for practitioners of medicine or individuals dealing with their own intersexuality. This is a book that has lessons to offer to everyone, lessons on ethics and how other human beings should be treated, lessons on sexuality that would improve the human race if only we would learn, lessons on parenting and the heavy burden of making decisions about another human's life. The lessons on what sex and sexuality really involve should offer insights to all of the five (or more) sexes that inhabit this planet. I found the wealth of new information useful and interesting, but I also found that the tales of individuals and their histories greatly enhanced my understanding of the real impact of the facts presented. The consistent history of parents and doctors making decisions on behalf of young children should make us all pause the next time we set out to make a decision for or about another human being- a patient, a child, an aging parent, whoever- and ask oursevles whether we really understand the consequences of what we are doing, whether we are really the one who should be making the decision, and whether there is any way to allow the decision to be made by the individual who will in the end bear the consequences of what we decide. This book made me laugh, it made me cry more than once, and I was suprised at how much I learned about myself. By the end I felt like I wanted to meet and talk to most of the contributors to the book.

The Benchmark And Landmark Book
Alice Domurat Dreger has written what may well come to be regarded as the definitive work on intersexuality. By employing a collective and inclusive approach, Ms. Dreger is able to provide both personal and medical perspectives on intersexuality provided by individuals, their families and compassionate medical providers. She provides a brief forward to each chapter on the author and topic content which is illuminating and helps to assist the reader to focus on the material. This is a well-written book which, for the first time in a single printed volume, provides material solely dealing with intersexed individuals. This landmark book provides compelling reasons, based on the telling of personal odyssies, why only those people affected should be the decision makers in their care. I hope that every intersexed person, every family member or parent of an intersexed individual reads this book. And I pray that every medical professional who treats intersexed individuals, beginning with obstetricians, pediatricians and pediatric urologists, takes to heart the suggestions for adapting care to a patient-directed philosophy of medical care.
