An Enchanted Evening
"Love Spell" is an intoxicatingly romantic story set in a mystical, wooded winter landscape, deep and full of secrets. The home of the alluring, seductive and mysterious Allegra, it nurtures and restores her peace of mind. It is here, on Halloween, that she seeks rescue from her loneliness and isolation, and risks meeting the beautiful veterinarian, Kate Gallegher. It is through Kate, who lives in a small, nearby village, that we get a sense of the pleasures of bonding with nature and animals as she explores the woods, and skillfully and sensitively treats her patients. A lively plot, spare writing, and a sense of humor make this a smart, sexy, and compassionate book as the love story between Allegra and Kate unfurls. Williams, always a thoughtful writer, invites the reader to a tantalizing sexual fantasy, symphonic in its building of a delicious life-like tension. As Kate's and Allegra's worlds cross, and as Kate meets Allegra's friends, the reader is challenged to find each person's inner beauty and common humanity. Touching many themes, "Love Spell" is a vivid, thought-provoking book; an engrossing read for anyone in love...or wishing to be.

Funny, entertaining, and sexy.
This tale of a sexy lesbian witch seducing a lonely vet on Halloween is perfect for curling up with on a cold autumn evening. The characters are interesting and the plot fun. Highly recommended.

THE book for Honeymooners (and comic acting) into:
The late Audrey Meadows was in some ways an underrated talent. True, she won an Emmy for her role as Alice on Jackie Gleason's classic The Honeymooners, which ran alternately as a sketch and for one season as an actual sitcom. If you ever want to see a TOP NOTCH comic actress at work see if you can get the Jack Benny Program (available on VHS)episode where Benny and his crew recreate the Honeymooners -- with Meadows playing Alice. No matter what the substitute cast does, she stays 100 percent in character as Alice.

This WONDERFUL book is chock full of info about her special chemistry with The Great One Jackie Gleason (to younger readers: he was the inspiration for Fred Flintstone and she was the inspiration for Wilma) both on and off the screen. This delightful book gives glimpses of the Honeymooners' stars lives on and off the screen, ,recounts key happenings on epidodes and traces the history of the show's various revivals in the late 60s and 70s.

HOWEVER: I strongly disagree with those who view this kind of book as nostalgia. It has valuable tips for anyone interested in acting and comedy. Gleason seldom rehearsed and she had a host of body language signals to help him with a line or move in a certain direction. As an entertainer (I'm a ventriloquist) I have always found one thing she said and writes here vital information for someone in a comedy team (even if your partner is wooden): When Gleason was doing key lines she generally froze. She reacted but kept movement, etc. to a minimum to keep the focus on him. Another tidbit: she was initially rejected by Gleason for the part of Alice (too pretty) so she had her picture taken when she woke up, without make up, and when it was submitted to him he KNEW this person (who he forgot he had seen and would not have recognized anyway) was his Alice.

You can sense her awe of and fondness for Gleason from start until she recounts his sad cancer death (she later died of cancer as well). She also sketches other cast members such as Art "Ed Norton" Carney so they come alive on paper. You sense the unappreciated professionalism of this actress who made doing these classic comedies actually done "by the seat of the pants" seem so easy, effortless and rehearsed.

An absolutely fabulous book!
Audrey Meadows is one of the greatest actresses of all time and is a definite legend. This book tells of her times while filming The Honeymooners and then some. An absolute must-have for all die hard Honeymooners fans like myself!

WONDERFUL! Meaningful, inspirational, & deeply touching
This is a collection of warm, wonderful, inspirational stories. I loved it, and very highly recommend it. *HOWEVER*, be forewarned that it contains a large number of the stories from the Chicken Soup books. Although that won't usually be a problem (and I do think that the selection here is outstanding), it probably wouldn't be a good choice for someone who has all of the books in the Chicken Soup series. For most of us, though, it is a beautiful collection.

What a Pip!
The spirit and wit of Alice Roosevelt really comes across in this book. It's well written and really makes you feel like you're sitting in the room with her talking about this and that and jumping from one subject to another. A must read!

This book is great and part of family history.
I love to read the biographiers like Alice Longworth and her dad, Theodore Roosevelt and U.S. Presidents and First Ladies because of the part of the history. I read Alice's book all the time at the library and it was very good book.

Deeply Comforting
I used to have a great deal of trouble sleeping. It was a mixture of insomnia (due to a great deal of worry) and fear of going to sleep (due to inevitable nightmares). Thank God(dess) that I came across this audio interview with Alice Walker. There is nothing more soothing to a frightenned child in the night than the sounds of a voice of a loving mother.
This tape includes an interview as well as poems that Walker recites with an occasional backdrop of Bluegrass/Folksy music. She discusses with genuine concern issues such as the creative writing process, religion, the repulsive act of Female Genital Mutilation (which she has researched and written about elsewhere), anger and rage, remorse, reunion, animals, racism, meditation, silence, personal identity, and many other topics.
This interview took place in Walker's home in Northern California and you can sense the utter peace, silence, and a very deep spiritual focus surrounding her dwelling. Her presence (from just hearing her voice) is deeply mysterious with a quiet power.
It is probable that only die-hard Walker fans will search this tape out. This is really a shame. But, I suppose (as Patti Smith once said) those who seek feel the glow.

The voice of an angel of fire
I loved Alice's writing early on, but when I heard this audiotape, I was mesmerized by her soft, breathy lovely voice. It was then I got a sense of the fullness and width of the lady's heart, social conscience, love, and grounded spirituality. This is a lady of courage and integrity. A wonderful introduction to the author.

Exciting Philosophy
This is one of the more important recent books on Wittgenstein. I daresay that it is one of the most exciting and interesting texts since McDowell's Mind and World.

The most interesting and pertinent articles are by Cavell (who is often unclear but is otherwise here), McDowell (Non-Cognitivism and Rule-Following, which is also in his Mind, Value...anthology), Conant, Putnam (on mathematical necessity--so good--he's soon to have a new book released [UW lectures] by Columbia UP), J. Floyd (on math), and C. Diamond (esp. the article on the PL Arg. in the Tractatus).

This is a very exciting anthology. I highly recommend it.

I also recommend: Wittgenstein in America (Oxford UP) and Smith, Reading McDowell.

Proof that Wittgenstein's work has not yet been exhausted
Ms. Crary and Mr. Read have compiled texts from unorthodox philosophers young and old, who take Wittgenstein's statement '...Our investigation gains its importance from what it destroys' seriously, without giving way to uncompromising (& incomprehensible) forms of skepticism and relativism. However, that is not to say they do not take skepticism seriously or even believe that it must inevitably appear as an inherent part of philosophical discourse. Skepticism appears, rather, in almost all of these texts as both an impetus and impediment, in need of philosophical treatment. They see the need of destruction in light of the need of discourse, of creation, & if not in light of 'theory' (per se) in light of (textual) investigation. To this end, many of the essays re-examine the Tractatus in terms of W.'s later work, e.g. in the Investigations; they attempt to draw out certain similarities that have been covered up by the forthright assumption that the later work is only a critique of the earlier stuff.

Crary herself was a student of John McDowell at Pittsburgh, who is represented here with his beautiful treatment of non-cognitivism ('Non-cognitivism and rule-following'); followed by Cavell with a text on language learning; followed by Crary with a text on Political Philosophy, by Conant & Diamond with texts on the Tractatus and the Private-Language Argument respectively, etc. Finally, in the role of defendant is a text by P.M.S Hacker representing a more orthodox Wittgenstein - a Wittgenstein in an outright battle against the threat of Skepticism. -dg

A childrens' book with great appeal for older readers
This is a book for children (with wonderful illustrations) that attempts to tell the story of the friendship between Alice Liddell and "Lewis Carroll". It is written is a somewhat episodic style. The episodes are chosen, for the most part, due to the bearing that each one has on illuminating characters and situations found in the "Alice" books. The author does not completely avoid the controversial, and this is somewhat of a pleasant surprise. Though originally written in Swedish, it reads very well in translation. I found the book to be both poignant and scholarly (i.e., well-researched), and with great adult appeal for a childrens' book. (Even if the text were less rewarding than it is, the book would be worth keeping for the illustrations alone)

Beautiful telling of the true Alice in Wonderland story
Although The Other Alice is technically a children's book, any fan of Lewis Carroll will find it rewarding. The meticulous art work, showing Alice Liddell and her sisters and Charles Dodgeson [Carroll] and many Oxford settings is superb. The book is also includes many actual photgraphs of Alice, her family and Dodgeson's other child friends. Although this is a book for children, it does not shy away from the rather sad life and obsession which drove Dodgeson, nor does it give an artifically happy ending to the story. If you wonder where many of Dodgeson's plot developments came from [e.g. the Dodo, the wet 'caucus race' you'll find it all here. The author [who also wrote the delightful Linnea in Monet's Garden] and illustrator deserve kudos for this book [translated from the Sweedish, there is apparently a different translation avaiable in England under the title Alice's Oxford Adventure]. Well worth reading in a more adult approach is Staphanie Stoffel's Lewis Carroll in Wonderland [which includes some of the paintings done by Erickson for this book] both are better reads [and far more fun] than Gardner's Carroll biography.
