PRICELESS! 10 STARS!
"I, the creator of Crepes Suzette for the man who would become Edward VII, will now give you the recipe for Henri Charpentier."

And so he begins his sweetly swaggering and sentimental autobiography spanning his humble beginnings in 19th century France, to his auspicious apprenticeships in the world's top hotels and restaurants, his poverty while working in London, and his struggles to create a career as a restauranteur in America, only to be shut down by Prohibition. The story is told with a littering of the favorite recipes of the famous people he served. I could not put this book down! Full of anecdotal stories of princes and empresses, and his own enterprising yet generous heart comes through. Wish I weren't born too late to taste these meals ... At the end is a short cookbook of simple but elegant recipes, and excellent advice for choosing market produce. ... Merci, Henri!

Life a LA Henri: Being the Memories of Henri Charpentier
Before there was Emeril or Wolfgang Puck, there was Henri. Out of print for nearly six decades, LIFE A LA HENRI recounts the culinary adventures of Henri Charpentier, the very first celebrity chef and inventor of Crepes Suzettes. Introduction by Alice Waters of Chez Panisse fame.

Best Neuro handbook
This thin handbook is as indispensible as your neurology tools during residency training. It packs a lot of information in a tiny space and covers many topics. It does not have references or prognostic stats, but it will help you in DDx, basic management issues, or just simply act as a reminder when you can't quite remember details about something. I was pleasantly surprised at how much info is in this book. Highly recommended.

Nice aide-memoir
Well, I haven't had any life-changing experiences with Flaherty's book, but it's certainly a good read.

You will not learn Neurology from this book mind you -it's more a checklist of things to do when confronted with daily Neuro problems on the floors and in casualty - but it's one of those things that's nice to have in your pocket if not very many years have passed since you got that MD certificate framed, and on a night call you get one of those 3.00AM pages from the neuro ward...

Changed my life
No other neurology handbook packs as much useful information so succinctly. I wouldn't be without it on the wards. Lots of imaging coverage. It also has relevant coverage of psychiatry, medicine, and neurosurgery.

Love this cookbook
This is a great book for someone like me who wants to make nice meals but doesn't have a lot of time. Most recipes are very easy and yet very elegant in their presentation. Book includes preparation and cooking time so it's easy to make sure everything's done at the same moment! My favorites include the Scallops with Black Bean Sauce, and the Polenta Tart. Great for beginners and/or busy people!

Simple and Delicious
Great recipes, focused on people who can cook, but aren't interested in producing a complex masterpiece every night of the week...Wonderful!

Recipes That Are Too Easy To Be So Good!
The ingredient lists you'll find in these recipes won't send you scurrying to the store, armed with a legal pad, in search of dozens of esoteric items missing from your cupboard or refrigerator. Nor will your kitchen be piled high with dirty pots and plans to clean after the cooking is done. But you will find yourself saying, after dinner, "how could that have been sooo good...and so easy!" The distinguishing feature of this cookbook seems to be that it achieves interesting, flavorful, "gourmet" tastes and smells with recipes that are seldom more complicated than those you'd find on the side of a can or a boxtop. That's not to suggest you'll get away from having to pick up a fresh fruit, vegetable, or herb now and then. There are no dishes here that just call for the proverbial "casserole dish, can of mushroom soup, and something to pour it over." But if you're motivated to do anything more than ordering out, you could probably put a delicious dish on the table faster than Dominoes could deliver a pizza ... even if you did have to make a quick trip to the store for that bunch of fresh cilantro! Try the Pear & Cheddar Salad. It's to die for!

Relevant Today
Are the lives of your countrymen and women more valuable than the lives of Afghans, Iraquis, Palestinians, or those of the people of Northern Ireland? Should you support imperialist war against them? Should you restrain your struggle to improve your working conditions during today's "war on terrorism" or acquiesce to the restrictions on democratic rights for the "war effort"?

The authors of "Washington's Assault on Iraq: Opening Guns of World War II" say no, not if working people are going to advance and build a world free of inequality and war. This book is as relevant today as it was at the start of the Gulf War.

The Truth About Bush Sr-Clinton-Bush Jr's Wars
The US government never goes to war for 'democracy', 'freedom' , against 'ethnic cleansing' ,or against
'terrorism'. The US government goes to war for domination, markets, and profits, profits,
profits.Profits for families that have hundreds of millions and billions of dollars. It is their government,
not ours.In the Gulf in 1991 ( and in the region tomorrow ) war was,and is ,and will be, in the first place on behalf of Big
Oil. The superrich send working-class youth to kill and die for their interests. Not our own.In this now classic work
Jack Barnes explains the Gulf War and the increased rivalries between the market giant ( imperialist )
countries leading toward Depression, fascism, and a new world war. And what working class fighters
have done and will do -- here and all over the world --to resist and win.

the past shows the present and the future
This book shows how the Gulf war of 1990-1991 war not only a product of the continued conflict US Imperialism has with the Iraqis and other peoples of the Middle East. It illustrates how the growing tension between the US ruling circles and the imperialist governments of Europe and Japan played a decisive role in the Gulf War. Those conflicts continue to deepen to this day. As such this book is not an abstract tool about dead history, nor is this book an abstract analysis for academic or journalistic voyeurs. It is a handbook on the realities of world politics for working people, youth, and oppressed people who want to struggle against wars, imperialism, and oppression.

excellent book
should be required reading for all parents-to-be!

Uneven . . .
This is my fourth book by Miller, having recently finished 'For Your Own Good' and 'Thou Shalt Not Be Aware.' Those works were hard hitting and unrelenting ('ferocious' said one reviewer) and for me that was what made them so effective. I found 'Paths of Life' to be weak reading at times, and if I had not read Miller's earlier more strident work, I don't know if I could have appreciated what she was trying to do here, with models of healing built from the realizations of our past injuries. I truly love Miller's message, as painful as it is at times to me personally, and I believe time will show her to be a prophet. Just the same, this book does not convey her message the most effectively and I don't recommend it as a starting point for her ideas.

So, why did I give it 5 stars? The closing chapter of the book, 'What is Hatred' is one of the most powerful and coherent looks yet at what happened in Nazi Germany. Miller recognizes the value of works like Goldhagen's, while pointing out how he too misses the mysterious question of why did the holocaust happen, why then, and why Germany? Miller's buring insight into this, the greatest mystery of our century, is worth the price of this book alone. She offers some explanation of the unexplainable. I could not put the book down during this closing essay. Highly recommended.

The "gift of truth" has the potential to heal relationships.
Paths of Life: Seven Scenarios, Alice Miller, Pantheon Book, New York, 1998

Paths of Life: Seven Scenarios is Alice Miller's optimistic project about human interactions and their potential for healing. This new book is the first in seven years, and the eighth overall, by the former psychoanalyst and author of an unbroken string of classics. The seven scenarios consist of seven chapters of imaginary encounters between mature adults, and illustrate honest communications based on new awareness. The characters describe their lives--their environments, their successes and failures--and how they came to terms with them. Also included are expert opinions on parenting, psychotherapy, gurus and cult leaders, and the nature of hatred.

Dr. Miller's seven scenarios are about handling life and changing things for the better, and are intended to inform people and to encourage them to think. These imaginative encounters illustrate ways in which tackling sensitive interpersonal issues directly can clear the air and bring a feeling of liberation for both sides--and sometimes make the unexpected happen. Miller freely admits that this latest project arose from a wish to spare others what she herself has suffered, and reflects her old yearning for a genuine form of communication. Her intention is to explore how early experiences of suffering and love affect people's later lives, and the ways they relate to others; her hope is that this material will serve as a stimulus for organized inquiry. Embedded in the text are many timely teachings, reflecting her notion that "information is everything" (p. 35)--that information, at the right time, can set off a valuable process of reflection.

Should adult-children forgive their parents for maltreatment during childhood? As mature adults we can feel our pain and thereby increase authentic understanding--of ourselves, of our parents, and of the complexities of life. Feeling and understanding, argues Miller, differ markedly from blaming and forgiveness. We need to take full responsibility in our relationships, including those with our parents. As adults, we are autonomous. No longer are there any real dangers in confronting one's parents. The "gift of truth" can sometimes, though not always, change things for the better.

Concerning the primal therapies, Miller displays an informed and cautious optimism. She rightfully condemns those charlatans who would claim complete cure via regression, and their "theories" which--despite their scientific facade-- have absolutely nothing to do with science (p. 147). The goal of genuine therapy is, quite simply, the liberation of individual patients from their suffering. Resolving one's childhood issues is essential. Old patterns need to be properly worked through in a safe and reliable relationship, in the presence of someone who is genuinely sympathetic and willing to listen. It is entirely unacceptable for therapists to blame patients, or to create destructive dependencies.

There are positive aspects of the primal approach which can be salvaged, argues Miller, once it is acknowledged that primal therapy has distinct limitations and that it can have negative effects. Fortunately, primal therapists have increasingly moved away from the "initial absolutism." Many have jettisoned both the Intensive and the darkened office, having discovered better methods to enable their patients to feel (pp. 147-8). The original primal techniques are increasingly combined with those of other approaches. Still, there is a need to revise old concepts in light of these new techniques. And finally, there are grave dangers when the power of the primal approach is used to manipulate and exploit, as has been demonstrated all too often by unscrupulous "therapists," gurus and cults leaders.

As in all her books, Dr. Miller again demonstrates how the violence done to children devolves back on society as a whole (p. 155). Children who are beaten, for example, become emotional time bombs (p. 169). Still, child-victims can almost always develop trust if they are shown an understanding environment, and if the harm is identified as such, not disavowed or played down. Such children benefit from a "helping witness" who extends honesty, affection and love (if not protection); or a "knowing witness" who actively helps one to become conscious of their maltreatment and to articulate their sorrow (pp. 155-6). In some cases, a confrontation with the past is unavoidable in order to change things for the better (p. 178). Remember--it is the denial of our sufferings that is the breeding ground for hatred, an act of self-deception and an impasse that is deflected onto innocent victims (p. 186); the only factor separating rescuers and persecutors is the quality of parental nurture (p. 174). But here again is cause for optimism. We live in an age where far more people than ever before are growing up free of physical abuse, and these people can help to counteract the tradition of destructive violence that has plagued us for thousands of years (p. 186).

In this, her most recent work, Alice Miller states that she has grown more tolerant and patient as she's aged; that she no longer feels alone in what she knows; that she no longer has anything to prove. Her current volume supports such assertions. Who could argue that Miller's core contributions--The Drama of the Gifted Child (aka Prisoner of Childhood), For Your Own Good, Thou Shalt Not Be Aware, Pictures of a Childhood,The Untouched Key, Banished Knowledge, Breaking Down the Wall of Silence, and now Paths of Life--have failed to increase our individual consciousness of self and psychology, or to raise our collective awareness of significant social issues? We are fortunate, then, to receive this latest offering about the paths of ordinary life, about new understandings based on real feelings, and about genuine love that can face up to such truth (p. 186).

A timely book!
This is a timely book published just before the 40th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs. It's a great way to learn about what really
happened from the first-hand accounts of the Cuban revolutionaries who defeated the US-backed invasion. If you've never read a speech by Fidel Castro, there are a couple of very good ones in this book. You'll not only learn about what happened at the Bay of Pigs, but you'll also learn why the Cuban people smashed this invasion so swiftly and decisively. Another great part of the book is the testimony of Jose Ramon Fernandez who commanded troops in the thick of the fighting. There are maps, charts, all the details
of the battle. But it's not a dry or boring account. He tells what happened from a very human and personal point of view, revealing his own mistakes and weaknesses, and recounting some humorous episodes as well. Finally, the foreword of the book tells a fascinating story of how a group of young people at Carleton College organized support for
the Cuban revolution and against the US invasion and what they learned about politics. I think you'll be surprised as you read the
book about how relevant this forty-year-old event is today.

couldnt put this book down, not even at the beach
first read this book the first day of beach season. Instead of
spending time in the water, I just sat there and read this book until it was too dark to read. This account is an activist account ofthe fight from Cuban and US fighters who see and saw the US invasion and resistance in Cuba and the United States not as history to be deciphered but part of an ongoing struggle against imperialism, against war, and for the power of working people. I never stopped caring; I never stopped seeing what was hidden from me in 1961, I never stopped seeing lessons for the future. A good read. -

Preguntale a Alicia
excelente libro sobre todo cuando estas viviendo este tipo de etapas de la vida , me ayudo mucho y me senti identificado muchas veces con ella

The best book ever
I feel the book "Go Ask Alice" was the best book i've ever read.I don't recommend this book to anyone under the age of twelve because it talks about explicit sex, drugs, and alcohol. This book talks and teaches about behavior and what happens when you're under the influence. This book will help young adults with feelings, peer pressure and actions. This is a book I highly recommend teenagers to read .I don't think that adults would want to read this because it talks about explicit sex, drugs, and alcohol.

The Rays and the Initiations
A detailed explanation of the universal forces which affect everyone and everything, and which can be manipulated for good, that's what I've learned from this work of DK and Alice Bailey. Clearly enumerated and explained are the rules for disciples and initiates, a must for anyone who is serious about serving mankind. Words of power affecting these forces, called "rays" in Alice Bailey's books, are divulged to the attentive reader, who wishes to follow the path of the chela, or student of the Masters, whose fields of activity are also shared with the readers. This book is a MUST for all industrious servers of mankind.

A true souce of wisdom
Some works of litterature is truely byond reviewing in the normal sense: You dont choose to take on the challenge of understanding the works of Søren Kierkegaard or C.S.Peirce because they got a better review than say the works of Kant or Hegel. I think in most cases you study such a work because they promise a deeper understanding of the general questions that you are strugeling with in life. In this case i would suggest that an interest in making true your aspirations for a life in service of humanity and a desire to expose yourself to a range of advanced suggestions from your freind and teacher Djwhal Khul would make up a sound basis for the study of this book. If you choose to do so The Rays and the Initiations offers a continuous source of inspiration which you will properbly value for decades. Leaving the advertising of quick fixes to others the book represents a clear view of the longterm goals in the unfoldment of your soul-pontential. In the way that it speaks to your deeper layers of soul wisdom I think that it is very suggestive of the relationship that you will devellop with ur master as you progresses on the path. There is in my experience a very real spiritual stimulation resulting from any attemt to grasp the vision of this book.

One of the best of the AAB books.
Out of the many volumes of Alice Bailey books, there are a few that truly are written at a higher level, and whose contents will endure long into the future. "Treatise on Cosmic Fire" is one of those, being exhaustively profound all through. "The Rays and the Initiations" is another, whose information is valuable in a profound way. The book offers many esoteric catechisms and allegories that are intrinsically valuable to anyone seriously into meditation and contemplation. The "14 rules for initiation" given in the early volume "Initiation Human and Solar" are reproduced at a "higher consciousness" level. Whether the casual observer needs to believe this is beside the point. The wisdom and esoteric knowledge hinted at in this book makes it stand out as a valuable tool.

The descriptions and implied definition of initiation is non-sectarian and considers the person as a soul, who passes through many incarnations in order to "stand at the portal" to participation in a permanent and elevated awareness of life. I've had complaints from readers of AAB that she was at times antisemitist, talking of Aryans and all that! I think that the intention of the author was not racist, and that the reader should seek to view it that way.

Intitiation is a testing experience, and many of the pitfalls and potential hazards are described here. It seems that true seekers of illumination risk their sanity at many points along the way. However, just reaching the "door" to this experience is triumph in itself.

There is emphasis in this book on "group awareness". This is due to the time coming when there is inner awakening of the disciple to the group of sisters and brothers. These are not literally our siblings, but the inner family with whom we share our spiritual journey in service to the planet and its living creatures.

There is also a very practical large section on building the link between lower and higher self. This link is known as the "rainbow bridge" in some books, or, as here, is called the Antahkarana. Many meditation techniques use this sort of idea to reach higher awareness.

Finally, its worth adding that AAB books can get rather heavy, especially if you try to read them as you would a novel. However, this book has a lot going for it spiritually (I think at least) and the purely interested intellectual reader may find there is lots to try put into a perspective.

FANTASTIC!!
I just received this book and have already tried 10 of the recipes..all were wonderful! Having recently been diagnosed with diabetes, I was looking for recipes that not only I would like but those that would also please my "steak and potatoes please" husband. This was the book! All those yummy comfort foods you thought you'd have to give up are here and now healthy!

WONDERFUL Basic Cookbook the Whole Family Will Love!
If you're looking for "Chicken Florentine with Julienne Carrots on a Bed of Couscous," then this may not be the cookbook for you. However, if you are after a wonderful, basic cookbook that provides lots of familiar recipes that your kids and husband will enjoy, and won't take your forever to prepare, then look no further.

My kids (3,7,9) and husband have enjoyed the dishes I have made, and I'm not feeling like I can't eat the things I am used to and like; mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, broccoli and rice, and lasagna, to name just a few. And because diabetic exchange and nutrition information is provided for each recipe, sticking with my food plan isn't a problem.

I also really appreciate the fact that the author gave me information on several products that she has found that help to keep the dishes tasting "normal" in spite of the fact that they're low-fat. She provides information on where to get these items if they're not available at your local store.

The section with baked goods has recipes that sound wonderful, but they call for Nutra-Sweet, which I am NOT very keen on. I do wish it gave the amount of sugar you could use as an alternate. All other parts of the cookbook I am very happy with.

I'm so glad a found this cookbook and I would absolutely recommend it!

GREAT FOOD AND HEALTHY TOO!
Since I was just recently diagnosed with diabetes, I was searching for a book that would allow me to eat healthy and also satisfy 3 growing boys. This book is it! Not only are the recipes easy to make, but my kids love them! They beg for me to make the recipes we have tried! I find it wonderful that the recipes call for oridinary items you would have on hand. No ingredients that you have to search the world over for! You will love this book!
