Recommend for non-denominational spirituality
This book is simple and direct, but very rich. It provides new paths to thinking on each read. The insights here are wonderfully broad, crossing not only denominations but merging spiritual precepts across whole religions and finally leading to something many of us suspected all along--that maybe those things we were taught way back when were just plain wrong, bad interpretations we were right to feel uncomfortable accepting. Wilcox lets us know there are many very generous ways to approach spirituality and its potential comforts and guidance, without accepting the gendered politics in which it has traditionally been embedded.

My 11-year-old son has questioned the "in Christ's name" precepts pushed on him in violation of his own developing sense of morality, and as he raises his questions, we have enjoyed reading together and discussing pieces of this fine book; Wilcox has given us some common ground with which to face our discontent with traditional American religion, while also providing us with a new awareness of the wonders of a shared spirituality free of the entrenched, and not necessarily correct, interpretations.

It's an eye-opener, a comfort, and good for both the brain and the heart.

A Sense of the Sacred: Getty has it.
A few years ago, I attended the outdoor wedding of some friends in the American Southwest. At one point, an attractive woman stepped to the front and spoke a kind of benediction for the ceremony that is a marriage. She spoke in a strikingly mood altering manner: calm, unhurried, sincere, with matter of factual intensity and grace; and she spoke of the deeper experience and meaning of this moment which we all shared in. Usually uncomfortable in the presence of sermons and ceremony, I found myself thinking that this woman was a new kind of priestess, one that could help us reintegrate our spirits with our lives on this planet in a natural and honest way. The speaker was Adele Getty, and we are fortunate that she has published here what amounts to a manual for the revitalisation of "The Sense of the Sacred" which she understands and embodies so well. Ms Getty speaks movingly and with insight on the meaning of the sense of the sacred in earlier societies and it's subsequent loss, and of revitalisation movements, particularly the current and recent New Age, before moving into the reawakening of the sacred in our lives. Here the reader especially benefits from Getty's particular gifts and experience, for she has a natural sixth sense for the personal as well as social processes involved here. She speaks of the use of creating meaningful ceremony, as part of the process of investing our experiences with the full dimensions of their meaning for us; of birth and dying, of troubled teens disconnected, of the women's and men's movements, and of the male-female partnership, and our lives in our communities. Sense of the Sacred is an engaging and insightful personal manual for the revitalisation of this resonant dimension in our lives. I heartily recommend it.-Stephen Miller, Mkzdk.

Just an amazing book
Of course all 3 ST published books are classics and all have 5 star ratings from me, this one in particular is GREAT for a newbie getting started with an ST-80 based system like Squeak, at least from a historical perspective. The book covers as its title implies the UI, so don't expect a language lesson here, get this book if you can find it and hold onto it, a huge piece of history and well written. Amazing stuff.

A master's craft.
Oscar Ratti's drawings are both striking and intriguing.
The themes of the stories bring softly to the metaphysical aspect of martial arts, and let you contemplate the stunning paradoxes of life.
While it allows the reader to remain in the physical realm, it is an invitation to consider the depths of the human soul.
These inspired tales are a master's craft from two great martial artists.

Tried and True Techniques
I found this book to offer a number of useful pointers on techniques to use when painting a number of common and not-so-common flowers. Brush techniques, suggested color pallets and so forth were set out clearly for each of the plant specimens shown in the book. Use of these techniques and examples will help to add life to your botanical paintings whether you prefer a "botanical illistration" or a more painterly approach to watercolor.

A Beautiful Punch in the Gut
Like conversations with a trusted friend, Adele Slaughter's poems never trick or manipulate through language, but instead share openly without fear of judgement. Slaughter's comfort with what she shares is made apparent by her willingness to state her personal truths with a directness that superscedes embellishment. Woven throughout this volume are transformations; not grandiose epiphanies, but small, almost incidental shifts ensconsed within the cyclical nature of the self. Nothing is stagnant here. Memories materialize into resources - melancholy becomes catharsis. "The ghosts [she] lays down on [her] shedding self" are there to provide wholeness in the face of loss. In her strongest work, Slaughter speaks out from within her poems showing her own mindfulness of the trappings inherent in covering oneself over with words. ("But what is the story here - I hide behind myself giving you images.") "Poem to Save a Marriage" bypasses the conceit of poetry altogether to reveal the essence and purity of feeling - a plea at the most base level of being. She speaks directly using metaphor without romance and what the reader receives is a beautiful punch in the gut. In these poems, Slaughter does not see herself as a hero, nor honesty or art as heroic gestures. Yet the courage and humanity of her revelations are the heart and soul of this book and the gift that she heroically brings with this work.
