what a Woman!
My thanks to Dr. Leonard Warren for this absorbing biography of a woman I personally had never heard of and who is, I believe, unfamiliar to most readers. Set against the intellectual, religious, and scientific climate of the second half of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th, this recounting of the life of the awesomely brilliant Adele Marion Fielde should be required reading for anyone interested in such wide-ranging subjects as: missionary work in China, political and cultural life in western and eastern Europe, the early feminist movement, late-19th-century scientific thought and research....and more, more, more. And then there is the fascinating Ms. Fielde herself, a woman of extraordinary intellect, humanism, insight and energy, who not only survived an extraordinary tragedy but turned enforced self-reliance into the driving force of a most remarkable life. Why doesn't someone turn it into a movie?

Apricots at Midnight and Other Stories from a Patchwork Quilt
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins Publishers (11 May, 1989)
Authors: Adele Geras and Doreen Caldwell
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

My favorite book when I was 10 or 11.
Unfortunately, I don't remember Apricots at Midnight very well because it's been 3 or 4 years since I read it. The plot (as I remember it) was about a grandmother who tells her daughter a story each night, each one from a different patch on the patchwork quilt on the girl's bed. All the stories were wonderful. I remember one ghost story about a girl who died wearing a beautiful lace dress (it really scared me), and another one that had to do with stuffed animals-- the patch was cut from the side of a zebra. If it's the same as I remember it, it's recommended very very highly.

A traditional approach with valuable insight
It is obvious that anyone who wants to work in sales or marketing should have a superb resume... after all, if you can't sell yourself to an employer, how could you possibly sell their products or services? Thankfully, books like this one exist... you provide the coal (your education and experience), and Lewis and Corwin will fashion it into a diamond (one gem of a resume!).

The first 80 pages of the book are packed with excellent advice on resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, and job hunting. Some of their methods are unfashionable in the current job marketplace (they focus strictly on the chronological resume format, for example, and always include a "references available" statement), but it's generally a bad idea for anyone new to anything to break with tradition. The rest of the book contains 100 sample resumes, nicely categorized by market segment and job description.

Bottom line: if you're looking for a job in sales, marketing, or management, then you can't afford to miss this book.

Fabuloso!
