Drina comes back from Chalk Green, the boarding school, and almost feels like a new girl at the Dominick. However, she makes a new friend rather quickly, and continues gracefully on her path to becoming a ballerina. She gets to go to Italy and visit her Italian grandmother, and as the Dominick Company is in Italy at the same time, suprises for young Drina ensue. This is a lovely book - probably my favorite in the entire 11 book series. Ms. Estoril writes vividly about both Drina's life, and Italy, and it's impossible not to fall in love with this book. I highly recommend it to anyone, young or old, who has ever enjoyed the world of dance.

Due to the different names I got mixed up and thought this was the second book not the fourth. This one is really fantastic and Italy suits Drina so much. Some of the best in the series are the ones where Drina is abroad, such as this one, because the descriptions are so vivid and of course the stories are excellent! Please disregard my previous review as it was on the wrong book.

She also goes to visit her Italian grandmother in Milan, and her cousins in Italy... and even dances with the Dominick company, who are on tour there. This is probably my favorite one... Ms. Estoril makes Italy seem so wonderful, and I love Drina getting to dance with the company. :)

A rolicking rhyme that you cannot forget and logic that any preschooler will understand make this a *perfect* picturebook. The negotiations between the elephant and the car dealer are hilarious and subversive. How could this be out of print? Bring it back!

I Love this book. My mother just found my copy and memories came flooding back. I would have her read it every night. And then read it over again. And again. I loved the song. I can't believe I still have it. I can't believe others knew. How I love to smash small cars....

This gentle book floats you through the life of a French family between the wars, as seen through the eyes of children. Human foibles are observed with a naive humour, and events are often described without the full understanding of the narrator. Much of the subject matter could be overpowering, but the depiction in this book is beautiful.

Fields of glory is the most beautifully written book I have read in more than a decade--maybe ever. Virtually every page, every paragraph, is wonderfully crafted. How I wish I could read it in French, although I can't imagine that it could be any better. Mr. Rouaud is a genious.

By the end of this book I felt that I knew the family members intimately. This is beautifully done. The story unravels the lives of family members through the memories of a child, tracing their tragedy back to the ultimate tragedy of war. In some ways this book is very French but the feelings are universal and I strongly recommend it.

"Philosophical and Mathematical Correspondence" was published 13 years after Heijenoort's.

In response to Jay Miller's question below there is a book titled "Philosophical and Mathematical Correspondence. Gottlob Frege" that has 21 letters between Russell and Frege over a period of 10 years beginning with Russell's observation of his famous paradox in 1902. This wonderful collection of correspondence was published 20 years before "From Frege to Godel" and includes letters from many of the same mathematicians and logicians.

The second part of my review title may shock some, but the excellent collection of papers that Van Heijenoort has edited (and in many cases translated!) is also an excellent reference in the history of computing. Everyone appreciates that mathematical logic gave rise to computer science; the papers in this collection from Hilbert, Herbrand, Gödel, and others will show why.

If your interest is instead the history of logic, all the classics in the range specified by the work's title are here, complete with their own ideosyncratic notation. van Heijenoort's wonderful introductions to each piece will interelate the works, provide references to other literature and situate everything in a wonderful intellectual climate.

Be warned, however, that the foundational papers in this still growing field continue for another 15 years or so; these are reprinted in Davis' (alas, out of print) anthology _The Undecidable_.

This collection will keep you busy and wet your appetite for a sequel!

From Silence to Voice by Bernice Buresh and Suzanne Gordon is a must-read for all nurses. The message of the book is one nurses need to hear: talk about your work, show the world what you do, communicate the fact that nursing is skilled, responsible and interesting work. Buresh and Gordon make clear that much of the devaluing of nursing arises out of the fact that nurses avoid the limelight. Like the ubiquitous 'good woman' behind every successful man, nurses let their work be the backdrop for medical care, and for patients managing their own care. The consequences of downplaying the contribution of nursing to patient care is that our work is not noticed, our profession is not valued, and fewer and fewer people want to become nurses. Buresh and Gordon not only argue convincingly that nurses can be their own worst enemies in this respect, they provide a comprehensive range of strategies to teach nurses how to talk about their work, and (vitally) how to make people interested in hearing about it. These strategies range from ways of talking about nursing work to friends and family, to running a media campaign to support a union action, to writing oped pieces for major newspapers. I learnt a great deal from reading and re-reading From Silence to Voice and I recommend that it be part of curriculum for nursing students, be used for professional development sessions for working nurses, and adopted as a tool kit for union activists, professional officers and nursing leaders. Whether you are a student starting out in the nursing profession, a bedside clinican, a manager, organizer or educator, Buresh and Gordon's text is an eye-opener. Nurses as individuals and as a profession need to develop the communication skills and political savvy this book offers. And we need to do it right now! Bernice and Suzanne are two journalists who have taken on the nursing profession more or less the way we take on a patient with a life-threatening condition that is curable but requires both intensive and long term care. The diagnosis is silence. On account of our collective silence, we nurses miss the opportunity to show ourselves as consequential in the delivery of health care. And, as we well know, being inconsequential is ultimately fatal not just to nursing jobs and the status of the nursing profession but to our patients, who pay the highest price for inadequate nursing care. The remedy for silence is voice--our voices raised in conversation first and foremost with our families, friends and patients and also with the general public. I love this book.  Veteran journalists Suzanne Gordon and Bernice Buresh have produced a practical,intelligent guide on public communication for nurses. How needed this is and probably more currently than ever before. Until now there's been very little available to teach nurses the nuts and bolts of public communication. Nurses who read this book will learn how to do the basics --construct anecdotes that explain why they make a difference, refine professional presentation, integrate nursing research findings into struggles for better staffing in hospitals, write a letter to the editor of a newspaper, or an op-ed or commentary, or speak compellingly on the radio or TV.

But another reason I like From Silence to Voice so much is that the authors sensitively explore the cultural barriers that have made women and women''s work so hidden in this society. In my own work and my work with other nurses, I''ve discovered how reluctant some of us are to toot our horns and broadcast our accomplishments. Our self-silencing is a detriment to quality patient care and real health care reform. This book can be a catalyst for a new approach by nurses to public education and communication. I highly recommend From Silence to Voice, particularly to nurse educators who should consider incorporating its timely lessons into their curriculum.

Unlike a lot of New Age Fluff out there, Markale uses analytical thinking along with evidence etched in the stone of history and archeology to deduct for us what druidism must have once been like. He covers beliefs and philosophies, rites and responsibilities of the druids with great accuracy.

The way the book is written though, does assume the reader has some basic knowledge about the celtic civilization that lived and thrived before the romans, with Julius Caesar at the head, conquered Gaul.

And while the ancient Gauls left no written histories or books on philosophy, Markale is able to piece together bits and pieces of Roman and Greek writings about the druids to give us a hint at the scope of intelligence that dotted Gaul before the onslaught of Romanization and the later wave of Christian oppression.

The only part of the book I did not like was the end where Markale seems like he's stretching to reach and accord between ancient druidism and the parallel path of Chrisitanity and his repeated tries to correlate druidism and the followers of christ as similar religions.

All in all, though, this is a good book and a must read for anyone trulty interested in pre-fluff druidism.

A profound and daring exploration of the nature of the druids and druidry based upon the evidence of archeology, literature and folklore, elucidated by one of the best minds of our time. While the explorations are at times spell-binding, Mr Markale does not suffer fools lightly and there are many evidences in his book of his sharp mind and tongue. Not for the faint of heart or those already wed to romantic notions of what the druids should have been. A work of the most astute scholarship, an inspiration to read.

I know that there is a guy on this page who reviewed it saying the same thing. But it IS the truth. This man does his research, shows WHY historically and/or mythologically, he makes claims. He debunks a lot of the crapola out there available just by presenting the evidence.

I started with his book on Halloween and moved on to this one. If you want to get a feel for what the Celtic ancestors believed and what they did and have it make sense (unlike direct translations of mythology and dry academic texts) both books a superb! I was on a search for this for 13 years, looking for the truth not what neo-pagans and Wiccans claimed to be truth. I did not like the cut and paste methods the former use to make something "Celtic: i.e. use Greek ritual structure and use Celtic gods. Talk about whacky. If you don't know what I mean by that, read his books and you WILL understand.

This book is a little hard to get into at the beginning. i would recommend starting on a chapter that sounds interesting and reading the first few chapters later.

I enjoyed reading Firewater by Mary Jean Scheid. This is a gripping story about a serial killer who has invaded the small town in which police officer Kate Lipton has chosen to settle. After the prologue that introduces the reader to the circumstances that enable the murderer, we meet Kate. She is struggling for acceptance by her fellow police officers as well as the townfolk. She is aided by the town's handsome coroner, also new to the area, and by an FBI agent whimsically named after Wyatt Earp.

There is an interesting twist in that the murderer's modus operandi involves the use of Sarin nerve gas, but I do wish Scheid had descibed its history in greater detail.

As a backdrop to the murders, we learn about Kate's efforts to leave behind her promiscuous past. She tries to befriend the young girl of the killer's first victim. She also needs to overcome her difficulty in following through with projects.

Then Scheid tells us who the mastermind behind the murders is. Scheid takes on a rollicking ride to the finish. Her dialogue is crisp and she has put together a good story; I would like to hope the author has a sequel in mind.

Mary Jean's Novel Firewater was brought to my attention by a friend. While knowing that I normally don't read anything but non-fiction, my friend thought I would especially enjoy it.
Well this novel makes me feel as if it could really happen in true life. I was familiar with most of the little towns this mystery takes place in, so that made it all the more intense for me! But it wasn't even this that kept me on the edge of my seat...Mary Jean Scheid has a talent portraying "strangle to strategy" and an uncanny writing technique similar to a Horror Novelist we all know and love! I will DEFINATELY read her next! Thanks!

This is one of those books that's quick to read and leaves you wishing for a sequel. I hope the author continues with these characters in the future. Kate is both vulnerable and believable, and the plot is just a little scary in light of the past year's events. I'll watch for Ms. Scheid's next book.
