Food Your Miracle Medicine
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (01 May, 1994)
Author: Jean Carper

Average review score:

I learned a lot from reading this book
It's packed with infomation about what to eat or drink and spices/herbs to use that are beneficial to your body. Some of the infomation in the book has are: It lists foods that may help prevent certain symptoms and problems, it lists disease-fighting powers in 60 common foods, it lists foods that are high in calcium, fiber, beta carotene and more. The books also goes on about how to use drugs in foods to stay healthy which I found very helpful since I don't use over-the-counter prescription such as tylenol

An absolute "must" for any home!
I found this book for a friend who was having kidney problems and, intrigued, decided to look into it for myself. I am absolutely thrilled with what I've read, and am changing my entire eating program as a result. Jean Carper provides the reader with scientific facts in layman's terms, and uses a "thumbs up/thumbs down" system to debunk myths and provide further foundation for the true "miracle power" of food. She offers cardiovascular food cures, remedies for digestive troubles, cancer-fighting diets, foods to stave off depression, foods to prevent asthma. . .the list goes on and on. It leaves the reader with the realization that health is something we can *choose*. . .especially when armed with the knowledge Carper has given us.

A wonderful, precise, well-organized, helpful guide.
This book is precisely what the public needs to escape the clutches of the drug industry! The material is well-ordered, well-organized, and gives vital and very helpful information for those seeking advice. I feel this book will do very much to bring the "wholistic" approach out of the realm of "eye of newt, wing of bat" where "normal" people often place natural remedies. Jean Carper, you have given us a big measure of respectability with many and frequent cites to scientific studies which confirm the tremendous values contained in plain old food! Thanks SO MUCH!

In a very wise, old book it is written, " . . . and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." Revelation 22:2.

The buyer will get many times the purchase price in return from reading and heeding the advice given. My copy is a treasured addition to my library.

House of Illusions

Author: Ruby Jean Jensen

This is where it all started.
This is what started it all, my infatuation with Ms. Jensen's books. I bought this 384 paged book at a used book store, not expecting much from it. I automatically assumed that it was another piece of "fluffy" summer reading. What I got instead ws a fantastic horror novel, filled with really creapy images! This was one of those rare books that actually had me too freaked-out to turn to the next page!
The story centers around two sisters, Jodi and Amy, whos mother sends them to live with her ex-husband for the summer. The two sisters arrive at the airport with mixed feelings about meeting their dad whom they've never seen before. Little did they know that they would be spending their summer with a traveling carnival! Yes, their father decided to join a carnival.
At first, the carnival seemed friendly. A place filled with interesting charactors and fun rides. Especially the House of Mirrors, the sideshow attraction that holds more than what you see on the surface.

Then the first body is found, crumpled into an unrecognizable mass of blood and bones. Then the truth behind the House of Mirrors is untangled. A truth filled with grotesque clowns and an evil magician who wants more than to hear children scream in his House of Illusions where nothing is as it seems...
This book was almost impossible to put down! It had me staying up late into the night, too scared to turn the page and too glued to stop. What I like most about this book is that it doesn't have a huge "Stephen King ending" where everything is put into a final statement. This book makes you think. This was refreshing. The only problem I had with the book was some of the diologue. Some of it was very unrealistic and melodramatic. I couldn't picture real human beings using the same phrases that some of the charactors used. But oh-well, this can be forgiven. The rest of the book was great!
On the surface, this book might seem a little cheesy, but if you keep reading, you'll find that it's a fast pace horror novel filled with killer clowns, gruesome murders and some very creepy moments!

Excellent!!
This book was one of the best horror books I've ever read. I couldn't stop reading it and I am reading it for the second time!!

House of Illusions
Traveling carnival, kids of worker show up unexpectantly,
mysterious clowns, curiosity, secrets, and
THE HOUSE OF ILLUSIONS (let us not forget that!).
Strange, very strange happenings in this house of mirrors
with it's disappearing staircase.
Can the kids solve the mystery? Or are they just in danger
of their lives? They are very afraid and SO WAS I!
I owned and loaned two books with this title,
although they are usually very hard to find.
I want to read it for the 4th time,
but each copy I loaned out, I never got back.
It must have been passed on and on.

hours of fun
Like all of the I spy books, this one offers hours and hours of fun for all ages. Some of the things to be found took days to find, which can be a bit frustrating for some people.

The best trip companion for a little kid
This book is as exciting for kids as it is for parents. I bought our first I Spy book for a long (17 hrs) plane flight with my 3.5 year old and it really did the job of entertaining him enough. Without it the trip could have been a nightmare. I recommend it to anyone who needs to keep a child entertained and occupied for a longer period of time.

Each page is a picture if multiple little objects. Under the picture there are several riddles, and kids can spend quite a lot of time looking for the objects. But parents can make addititional riddles--so many objects are hidden or not obvious. And they can have fun too.

The artwork is beautiful and sharp. While older kids can learn to be more observant, younger ones can enhance their vocabulary by learning the name of the objects (with an adult's help , of course).

Terrific book, challenging for all ages
We have a 2-1/2 yr old daughter who absolutely LOVES the "I Spy" book series. This book is much more involved and difficult than the smaller board books designed for little ones. However, she got the idea of searching for things from the easier board books and soon got bored (pardon the pun). Using this larger version, we can make up lots of games to keep it interesting. Now, she asks us "I spy a ___" and we have to find it. Hard to do with only a few pictures on each page.

We have a lot of fun with it too - and haven't found some of the things after several months! Bottom line: Great book - start with the board books for younger ones and move up to this. make up your own games to challenge them. Enjoy

An Excellent Medical Transcription Reference
Being in the medical transcription field having to look up new words and decipher dialects, this is one book every transcriptionist should have. To look up a word by disease and/or symptom is a lot faster than a flashlight without batteries in the dark! I highly recommend this book to medical transcriptionists whether a beginner, intermediate or experienced one.

Medical Phrase Index
This latest revision - 4th edition (10/15/01) is even easier to use and more comprehensive (250,000+ entries) than previously. This is truly THE medical phrase resource. Nothing else comes close! We use it dozens of times a day.

Required MT resource
When one hears one word in a phrase but is not sure of others, this resource is invaluable. Of all my resources for medical transcription, this is one of the few I use every day. Can't live without it.

Mystical Dogs: Animals as Guides to Our Inner Life

An absorbing saga of metaphysical enlightenment
Mystical Dogs: Animals As Guides To Our Inner Life by Jean Houston is about the transcendental value of animal companionship in general, and the love of dogs in particular. Indeed, our animal companions can be the starting point to a mystical gateway and an awakened consciousness. An absorbing saga of metaphysical enlightenment and abiding memories for beloved animal companions, Mystical Dogs is enthusiastically recommended reading for New Age animal lovers.

Let's talk to the animals - more!
This book is a great gift for humanity.

A former President of the American Association of Humanistic Psychology, Jean is a prolific writer and multi-talented teacher in the field of human potential, sacred psychology, spiritual pathways, consciousness and inner awareness. Her work involves the intertwining of disciplines on the quest for spiritual renewal within the whole development of the individual.

In this her nineteenth book, Jean shares her profound knowledge and wonderful sense of humour, about her experiences with the dogs that have been her companions throughout her journey from early childhood.

She describes eight stages of the spiritual or mystic path which each dog enhanced for her. She calls her dogs, friends of our spirit and guardians of the soul. Advocating the deep spiritual connection between humans and animals that can help us on our path to become one with nature and the divine.

Fans of the author, and those not yet familiar with her writings will have their minds expanded, their spirits filled with wonder and their hearts and souls uplifted as they are touched by the sheer genius and simplicity of this 'breath of fresh air' book.

I am going back to my Tonkinese cats to thank them for what they teach me! As Dr Doolittle did, let's talk to the animals -more!

I Know What You're Thinking . . . .
You're thinking, "mystical dogs? Yeah. Right." You're thinking, "Forget dogs. Cats (hampsters, pigeons, nemotodes) rule." Or,"mystical what???" If so, you're apt not to be alone. There's a big "however" here: HOWEVER, Mystical Dogs is one read to hang your inner-child's hat on. The book boasts the intricate simplicity which hallmarks genius. Fact is, if you have, or have had, a canine buddy and know the joys, the wonders such kinship brings, you'll be revisiting a much-loved realm. If -- and there's that word again -- however, your idea of a dog coincides with a four-legged type that bummed a ride with Noah, strolled off the ark straight into your hydrangea bush, you will indeed be revisioning your untutored little perception. Chances are, when you read this book, you are going to go and, I might add, gleefully, to the dogs.

Fact is: Jean Houston has given us a gift. She has yanked spirituality off its high-falutin pedestal, framed it in compelling language and winsome anecdote. She has placed Spirit at eye-level. This vantage point lets us discern that which might otherwise elude us: numinous gleanings, transcendent knowings and ineffable intimations. Thanks to the author's lack of pretense, we readers become enlightened even as we encounter the dearest of creatures, the funniest of situations. Fact is: dogs, uh-huh, dogs (!) have something to teach us. Those unlikely teachings are, Houston demonstates, unsurpassed by human prayer or pilgrimage.

i'm in this show
Marat/Sade is an excellent script. for all of you out there who love the book and the story come To Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, november 20th through the 24th for a fabulous performance of the show. call the box office at 1-440-826-2240. ask for tony and if he's there tell him u saw this.

the most beautiful play ever
I have to say that this is an absolutly beautiful piece of literature. The language rolls off the tounge like a symphony with a harmonizing dissonance. The story itself is so simple yet complicated all at the same time. The emotion that one feels after reading this is numbing. You sit there not knowing what to say and think.

Publish MARAT/SADE again.
MARAT/SADE

"This play-within-a-play is about pushing at the limits", said Dramaturg William Lewis Evans.

I first saw the play performed by students of the Bishop's College School Studio Theatre in Lennoxville, Quebec. The text was phenomenally stimulating. The play was memorable, intense, and for the audience at least, indeed a little scary. Marat/Sade, after all, is the practical quintessence of what Antonin Artaud called the Theatre of Cruelty - theatre of the visceral and disturbing - theatre that "wakes us up, mind and heart". The highlight of that Canadian gala, for me, was when I witnessed an audience member and retired member of the French Foreign Legion (an outstanding citoyen-expatrie who should remain nameless) stand up - in the middle of this High School play - and leave the theatre in protest.

The play was, and remains, exceedingly powerful.

Years later I saw the play performed by Yale students in New Haven, Connecticut. If I remember correctly, Loren Stein directed. At one point during the performance, it became clear to the audience that one of the patients - an actor - had, during the course of the performance, in fact urinated on an audience member. As a reporter for Radio in New Haven, I interrogated that audience member at the end of the night, and caught a soundbite.

She said:

"It was wonderful. I don't know what else to say. This is Theatre, I guess. Real theatre."

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that this play should end up out of print, along with a dozen or so others like it, and be replaced on your roster with the latest celebrity-authored self-help books.

Maybe Oprah Winfrey will teach me how to fry tofu. It seems to be all we have a taste for anymore.

Still wonderful after all these years
I first owned this volume of poetry in 1978. That book simply fell apart after more than 20 years of reading and handling (sometimes roughly by my children). I replace this book with a new one just last year.
The old favorites are all here; Fireflies in the Garden, The Road Not Taken, Fire and Ice, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, and a hundred more. In my opinion this is the definitive volume on Frost.
I have always been awed by the number of poems Frost wrote about the stars. A Star on a Stoneboat, The Star Spitter, Stars, Canis Major and many others. Truly Robert Frost is the astronomers poet.
Also in this volume is perhaps my favorite Frost poem, Brown's Descent.
If you love reading Frost on a crispy fall evening, then you'll love reading him when the crickets chirp. You'll need to own this book.

The Poetry-Lover's Definitive Frost
Robert Frost was and is America's greatest poet. Excepting, perhaps, W. B. Yeats, he may be the greatest poet to write English in the twentieth century. (To me, it's a toss-up.) To read this volume systematically or desultorily is to become convinced of that. But Frost is, above all, accessible, so the casual reader may not appreciate the difficulty of what he does. Like much of the greatest art his looks easy, even inevitable.

All of Frost's poems are here, plus his two dramatic Masques. When this book first appeared (in 1969) it caused a furor: the editor, it was angrily asserted, presumed too much. He dared to clarify - inserting a hyphen here, excising a comma there. That furor has since died down, as people realize that he did not do away with the sacred texts (any emendation was noted), but simply performed his job as editor. He regularized spelling and the use of single and double quotes (though not Capitalization, which can legitimately be thought of as integral to the poet's expression (think of e.e. cummings!)), and corrected other obvious errors. The notes give the published variants for each poem, so if you wish you may make your own call on some of these finicky issues.

I cannot emphasize enough: BUY THE HARDCOVER! After all, you will be reading this book for the rest of your life. It is a beautifully-built volume, of an easy size and heft for use, with understated appealing typefaces and an exemplary design. Put out by Frost's long-time publisher, this is one of the few essential books of American literature.

The Road Less Traveled
"It is absurd to think that the only way to tell if a poem is lasting is to wait and see if it lasts, The reader of good poem can tell the moment it strikes him that he has taken an immortal wound-that he will never get over it...The proof of a poem is not that we have never forgotten it, but we knew at sight we would never forget it."

Robert Frost

I have to admit it! When I first met Robert Frost's poetry in Freshman English class I took an immortal wound-that I will never get over it. Perhaps the then recent memory of the white haired poet who inaugurated Camelot that cold, January day conditioned me to receive the wound. Maybe Fr. Sheridan's teaching opened these poems for me. Most of all, I think that it is the words themselves which have made the poetry of Robert Frost such an important part of my life for almost 35 years.

This complete collection complemented the high school text book to which I had so often referred over the years. Here is the source of lines which I have often quoted. Many family vacations have begun with: "I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep" (Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening).

When my son tries to silence his sister's singing he is reminded that "Of course there must be something wrong In wanting to silence any song" (A Minor Bird).

Here we find philosophical reflections. "Good walls make good neighbors" counters "Something there is that doesn't like a wall" (Mending Wall).

Here "The Death of a Hired Man" challenges us to reflect upon how we value and treat others while "Christmas Trees" reminds us that not all things have prices. Here we are invited to follow the road of the poet who wrote "I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference" (The Road Not Taken).

I have writen just a sampling of the treasures to be found in this collection, but I have written enough. It is now time to indulge again with words I have never forgotten. "I shan't be gone long-You come too." (The Pasture).

Existentialism and human emotions
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Author: Jean Paul Sartre

Translation details
This book of 96 pages is a translation of Jean-Paul Sartre work. Specifically: it countains 7 sections:
* Existentialism (43p)
* Freedom and Responsability (8p)
* The desire to be God (3p)
* The Desire to be God (cont.) (5p)
* Existentialist psychoanalysis (16p)
* The Hole (7p)
* Ethical Implications (7p)

The first section "Existentialism" is the translation, by Bernard Frechtman, of the french text by Jean-Paul Sartre "L'Existentialisme est un humanisme" which was originally the text of a conference Sartre gave in Paris on 29 OCT 1945, published later in 1946.
Originally, this text was not intend to explain Existentialism, but to defend it against harsh critics from people who did not fully understand it. It is thus a fairly good introduction for anyone who whishes to recieve a first understanding of Existentialism.
The other sections are extracts from "Being and Nothingness", translated by Hazel E. Barnes, from Sartre's book "L'Être et le Néant" published in 1943.
I did not read the translation, I bought this book for my not-French girlfriend.

An easy to grasp outline of Existentialism
Reading Jean-Paul Sartre's "Existentialism and Human Emotions" is a much easier approach to understanding Sartre's philosophy than reading Sartre's more concentrated work such as "Being and Nothingness." Although I think the best introduction to Sartre is through reading "Nausea" and the plays. This book tries to explain what Existentialism is and what it tries to do. Sartre also defends Existentialism against attacks on it by other Philosophies and the public that often assumes Existentialism is a sad philosophy; giving man no meaning and leads him to nihilistic despair. On the contrary, Sartre says that Existentialism is the only way to give man meaning and dignity. The book also touches on the idea of Man wanting to be God in a world where God does no exist. Sartre at the end gives a quick summing up of Existential Psycho-anaylis. A basic thesis of this work could be explained as the following: "Man is free when in total involvement and action and from Freedom man has an ultimate responsibility he must follow as his actions have to do with all mankind."

I would recommend "Existentialism and Human Emotions" to anyone who wants to understand Existentialism without getting a headache from reading more complicated works(i.e. "Being and Nothingness," Heideggar etc..) I am an avid reader of Philosophy and I always refer back to this book when pondering a question about Existentialism. A must for anyone who is interested in Philosophy.

A Lucid Description of the Existential Doctrine
However much Sartre's essay enflamed Heidegger (see Heidegger's 'A Letter on Humanism'), Existentialism is a Humanism is perhaps THE quintessential outline of the existential project and of existentialism proper. If one wishes to gain an understanding of Sartre, the journey should start here. All the primary concerns of Sartrean existentialism are laid out in clear and insightful language - freedom, responsibility, bad faith and other issues are discussed. To this effect the translation does justice to the intent and thrust of Sartre.

In particular, Existentialism and Human Emotions is highly recomended for those wishing to begin Being and Nothingness, and those who want a deeper understanding of existential literature.

This book has been an invaluable part of my library, often read, referenced and revered.

A Great Foundational Book For The Christian Mom!
This book gave me much to chew on and think about. It also had some great, practical ideas that I hope to implement with my children someday. Mrs. Fleming's book affirmed me in my role as a mother and this is one book I will read again and again.

Inspiring a mother's heart
Having read many books over the years on child rearing and mothering, I would have to say that A Mother's Heart is the most inspiring as well as useful I have encountered. It offers not only thought provoking topics, but practical ways to incorporate them into our lives. It is one book that I read with a highlighter handy for remembering things that stand out to me (most of the book is highlighted and written in!). A Mother's Heart is also a book that I re-read often. Each time I am able to unearth another nugget of truth. I would recommend this book to all mom's.

A Book for every Mother's Personal Library
This book is for any mother seeking to be more of a Godly influence on her children. It helps you invision your life as a ministry that is far reaching beyond changing diapers, potty training, laundry, cooking, etc. Through A Mother's Heart, you will see that you have the ability to influence WHO your child becomes as they grow to be an adult.

You will walk through your own daily life with a fresh perspective going beyond "I am just a Mom". Jean helps you see that looking to the Lord to shape your character enables you to be better prepared to help shape your children's character. She goes beyond just telling you that you are more than just a mom she teaches you HOW to become a Mother Ministry.

I recommend this book highly to any mother to encourage her to see her calling as a MINISTRY.
