Ballet for Drina (Drina)

the beloved Drina series
This is the first in the Drina series, and the book introduces us to young Andrina Adamo, or Drina Adams. We learn that ballet is her passion, even though her grandparents, who she lives with, aren't too keen on the idea of her growing to be a ballerina. This will be a recurring theme in the 10 books to follow. Drina is one of the most lifelike charecters I've ever read about, and Ms. Estoril writes such a compelling story about her that I have considered her books my favorites for 10 years. For anyone who has ever wanted to dance, I recommend these books highly.

Books which are classics!
I LOVE the entire Drina series...and although I am now nearly 18, I cannot resist re-reading them, especially when I am down in the dumps. These books follow a young girls dreams, and bring happiness and hope to people who are following theirs. As a ballet dancer myself i feel that they portray many of the emotions you go through. Estoril has made a completely rounded character who we can believe in. I would Highly reccomend this series of books.

Other Books you should read....Lorna Hill-Sadlers Wells books.

the Drina series is the most beautiful collection of novels
My Grandmother sent me the first two drina books when I was about eleven and over the years I've managed to collect every one of them. I must have read them a million times because they really are the best books ever. When you read about Drina you absolutely love her. These books made me cry and I think anyone who has any interest in ballet has to read them. I think even if you didn't love ballet you would after reading these. The best thing about them is their passion and character development. I wish I could meet Drina. Anyway, I'm going to carry these books with me forever because they are the best!

Great read
Frantz Fanon's work is an excellent insight of how people of color throughout the world have been effected by colonization.

A must read for anyone trying to understand the basics about living in the western world as a person of color.

A gift to humanity
Fanon's amazing book is one of the landmarks in modern thinking, as far as I am concerned. Fanon says he wants to expose the sickness in order for it to be cured. He exposes the sickness inflicted on Africans by the contact with the colonizing white West in a razor sharp accuracy and courage. Fanon is completely honest, sparing no criticism from the Africans nor the Europeans. He gets help from giant figures like Cesaire and Senghor, and creates an emotionally and intellectually charged masterpiece.

I learned from Fanon about the use of language as a colonialist tool, the terrible affect on African self esteem, the psychological turmoil that erupts as a result of the contact with white society.
It is clear the world is not the same today as it was in the 50's, but Fanon's book is just as relevant.
Quoting from Sartre talking about another book by Fanon: "Have the courage to read this book !".

extremely trippy book...
a tome on the black man in europe, mainly martinique...basically what fanon is saying is : brothas try to be like the other, because they hate them selves and they desire to sleep with the other to give themselves worth and that a bad environment and colonialism makes a black man bad ...reading the book is like reading a long prose poem, thoughtful and stunning...take the chance. it's extremely interesting...

A springboard for your own culinary creativity!
I love this cookbook! It's features a great assortment of both sweet and savory crepes. Some are a little too gourmet for my taste (I'm thinking of the Shrimp & Jicama crepes, specifically), but most are simple, easy and delicious. The best part about this cookbook is it quickly shows you how quick and versatile crepes are. They can be used like pancakes, like tortillas, and sometimes even like pasta (like with Spinach and Ricotta crepes....just like manicotti). It's easy to throw ice cream, fruit, or nuts into a crepe for an amazing dessert. Sure, the book shows you plenty of amazing recipes, but taking the basic ideas and coming up with your own creation is a snap. This is a marvelous book. Sure to make a crepe enthusiast out of you!

Desserts are great. Not sure about the "savory" stuff.
This cookbook gives you all the basics to make crepes at home. They're surprisingly easy and versatile. Several of the recipes are for "savory" crepes, where the crepe is used like a tortilla, like philo dough, or like layered noodles. The pictures make them look great, and the recipes sound delicious. But crepes are still sort of like a pancake, so it's hard for me to take them seriously in a dinner or main course, even when it involves shrimp or caviar. The desserts I have no problem with. All of them are delicious, and it's easy to take the ideas and change them to your own liking (trading peaches and pralines for apples, dried cranberries and walnuts, for example). But regardless of whether you prefer the sweet or savory, this cookbook makes crepe cooking easy for the gourmet or the novice. Definitely worth the money.

lots of recipes, but you only need a couple
I made crepes a couple times before, but they never came out well. After reading this, I made three perfect batches using the basic recipes. I like making a batch, then filling them with things and keeping them in the refrigerator for breakfasts. With the recipes and tips in this book, I haven't had a single problem.

Spectacular.....breathtaking
Hermann Broch began writing this book under extraordinary circumstances as a prisoner in a German concentration camp in World War II. What emerged from that horrifying experience is one of the preeminent literary works of the 20th century.

The book is about Virgil's infamous deathbed request that his magnum opus, The "Aeneid," be burned because it was imperfect. Most of the book is told in a dazzling but recondite stream-of-consciousness mode, but the best section is Virgil's deathbed discussion with Caesar Augustus.

Broch invokes 20th century ideals such as the "authenticity" of art as a mirror to the natural world. We also encounter the dilemma of works of art that are incomplete & not polished completely. Aristotle said that in a perfect art work, every word contributes to the organic whole. Arbitrarily remove or add one word, says Aristotle, and the whole work comes crumbling down. Virgil uses this motif as his justification for wishing his beloved poem burned. Juxtaposed with this paradigm are the pleadings of Augustus that it is Virgil's duty as a Roman citizen to let his poem be read by all the world. After all, the literary excursion was to be Rome's national epic. The scene is, unmistakably, magnificent.

A considerable amount of background reading is required before attempting to take on this work. At a bare minimum, read the entire canon of Virgil, especially the "Aeneid." A workable familiarity of Roman history up until and including Augustus is necessary and a biography of Virgil (I would recommend Peter Levi's) would also be helpful. I am a fairly well-read guy, but some of the allusions went over my head.

The stream-of-consciousness style is interesting, but can make the book rather dense. Many of the sentences go on for pages and pages. The book attempts to capture the free-thought attributes of the machinery of Virgil's mind. An engrossing work of prose.

Virgil's dark night of the soul
"Burn the Aeneid" Virgil instructs his friends from his deathbed. Broch, as Dante did before him, uses Virgil as a spiritual guide in this exploration of the metaphysical and moral imagination. Here, the dying poet, reflects feverishly, consciously transcending his decaying form into the infinite universe-- and despairs of hope, as his sheltering idealism is confronted with the reality of human existence, the limits and futility of his understanding. Virgil's trust in a civilized humane society, one that, at its source, springs from the individual's seeking of beauty, freedom and wisdom, disintegrates, into one represented by the predations of the mob of the streets of Rome, as does his confidence in the Aeneid, his opus. A dialogue on the fate of the Aeneid ensues between Virgil and Augustus, forming a complex debate on art and government. Virgil defends the purity of the perceived world as metaphor, free of the allusions of art; Augustus proposes the nobility of art as symbol for government. A delicate lattice of oppositions and constructive contradictions braces the book. This is, though, ultimately, a story of the human journey, a struggle with darkness and doubt, reconciliation, and a rise to salvation. The remarkable final section has the celestial translucence of 'Paradiso'. The Death of Virgil is among a handful of true literary masterpieces this century whose reach, that of the entire compass of human impulse, consciousness and conscience, has equalled its grasp. It is a work of intellectual and spiritual adventure. Broch orchestrates an inquiry and fugue, sombre and passionate, into life, encompassed in a sensuous poetic oration-- and Virgil continues to cast his spell on the divine and the aesthetic order, employed by masters to illuminate our deepest perplexities and aspirations.

Metaphysics made beautiful
A magnificent book by a true master. A journey into human soul, combining the novel with the symphony (note the parts of the book and the difference in the sentences for start). Do not miss it.

A nice book for a beginner
As a beginner gardner, this book is helping me to, hopefully, put my garden in order. 'Great Garden Companions' is written in a conversational style and is nicely organized. Ms. Cunningham's experience in gardening shines through with helpful hints and sound advice based on years of working with her companion system. She outlines which vegetables, herbs and flowers work best together to repel pests naturally, covers many basic gardening skills (which I need to develop), and her enthusiasm is evident on every page. I think this book would be an excellent choice for any new gardner or for someone interested in gardening organically.

Informative and easy to read.
I bought several books on this topic, and this book is my absolute favorite. Well written, easy to understand, fun to read.

Wonderful!
This is what gardening is all about! This text approaches gardening in a sustainable, "natural-chaos", good for you and the earth manner. The illustrations are clear, the diagrams simple, new/unfamiliar terms well explained. Very clear, concise, imaginative, and inspiring. The author deserves a BIG thank-you for writing this book. It takes the guess work and mystery out of organic gardening and companion plants. Her methods are simple and effective.

Heavy Gear, 2nd Edition

One of the best SF RPGs.
Heavy Gear is a great game -- both in its rules system, which is simple and easy to pick up, and its background and story material.

The main rulebook comes with a full set of rules for both the RPG and the tactical combat game, plus a good amount of detail on a likely setting for an RPG (Peace River), and a slightly smaller section on the world as a whole (which is expanded on in the Life on Terra Nova sourcebook that can be purchased separately, and is also excellently written).

Heavy Gear takes place 4000 years in the future, on the colony world of Terra Nova. Heavy Gears are one-man mecha, something between an infantryman and a tank. The planet is divided into two polar leagues separated by a vast desert known as the Badlands, poised on the brink of war after years of uneasy peace. The game has an ongoing storyline that leads from this starting point and is continued with storybooks and through the sourcebooks. The storyline is planned out in advance, which gives it a great leg up on other games.

One note -- the computer games and cartoon should not be used to judge the pen and paper game; the computer games are not really in the best spirit of the game and the cartoon...has nothing to do with the pen and paper game other than the name really.

In addition to the rulebook, you will probably want to hunt down the Life on Terra Nova sourcebook if you plan to run an RPG game (or if you're just interested in reading more about the game world).

A Game Fit for Kings
The year is 1934... 1934 TN, that is - make that 6132 AD, or thereabouts. The planet is Terra Nova, one of several planets colonized by mankind after it survived a minor ice age and discovered a net of space anomalies connecting about a dozen planets. Unfortunately the Earth government collapsed some centuries back and left the colonies to fend for themselves...
On Terra Nova, a planet without oceans divided into two hemispheres by an inhospitable desert girdle, several nations have developped since that time. The southern nations have been subjugated by the Southern Republic, which in turn caused the northern nations to band together for their own protection. Now these two power blocks, armed to the teeth, are gearing up for war once more, with the unhappy inhabitants of the desert Badlands in the middle, seeing their home become a battleground.
And then there's the fascist Earth regime, come back to claim its own...

This is the Rulebook for the Heavy Gear system, Dream Pod 9's most exciting and best game system ever. At the core of it all is a game engine called the "Silhouette" system, a well thought out system of rules equally useful for roleplaying and tactical combat, for simulating space, submarine or ground environments.
HG offers you the opportunity to step into the future and see the world through the eyes of the inhabitants of mankind's new home, wether you want to do classical roleplaying or fast paced mechanical combat, or both at the same time.

The rulebook is very well written and contains lots of examples illustrating the realistic, yet easy to understand and use rules system. Talking of illustrations... those are there as well, *lots* of them, and very well done, too.

But you get more than just a bunch of rules. At the beginning there's a gorgeous colour section showing the planetary system and a world map, followed by a short but thorough introduction to the world of Terra Nova, covering the various nations and regions. There's even a short source book on Peace River, a huge desert city/arcology/weapons factory, allowing you to start playing right away if you wish to.
Of course you get the necessary character creation rules, an exhaustive list of skills, some equipment and weapons, and rules for interaction, skill tests and, of course, combat. You also get archetypes and some animals to populate the wilderness, not to forget the enigmatic desert nomads known as Sand Riders...
Plus you get the complete tactical combat rules, if you like that kind of thing. If you prefer hex-maps or miniature games is entirely left to you. The Silhouette system allows you every imaginable freedom while covering all the necessary aspects.

Some people have called Heavy Gear the heir of Battletech (you know, the combat game with all those giant robots... what serious Heavy Gear fans refer to as "that other game"). Fact is, HG is much, much more.
The trademark of the game is the Gear, a roughly humanoid combat machine of the future - but that 's where the similarity ends. The tactical system is hugely superior to that of BT, allowing for opportunity fire, sensor detection, communication and ECM, while the roleplaying system is not just an afterthought, but an inherent part of the game (if you want to, the main part - if not, it's a nice background. Your choice.)
HG is incredibly detailed (there's a huge range of sourcebooks, covering every imaginable aspect, if you feel like it - but you don't need them if you don't want) and quite realistic, plus it's got an overarcing background story similar to Babylon 5. And there's no need to read through stacks of badly written novels. Conflic is certainly a constand of the HG universe, but the system doesn't force you to concentrate on war, like the other game did, but allows you to explore the future any way you like.

In short, HG is my favorite game of all times. And I've tried out quite a number.

If you like Sci-Fi, you'll love this game...
This hardcover edition of Dream Pod Nine's Heavy Gear Role Playing and Tactical Game was one of my first pruchase of the game line.

It was money well spent.

The book itself sports quality binding and paper. The printing is clear, legible and easy on the eyes. There is plenty of excellent content, spiced generously with outstanding pen art.

Even if not a fan of Role Playing and Tactical Miniatures Gaming, Sci-Fi fans will enjoy a depiction of a futuristic colony world both at war with imperialistic conquerors and with itself.

It is a stark, hard sci-fi story of human settlers that have braved harsh desert conditions, isolated from the rest of humanity and struggling not only for suvival, but also for cultural identity.

Role Play and Tactical Game Players will also find Heavy Gear to be a refreshing change of pace from the tired Sword and Sorcery Genre. And, they will find this high quality rulebook to be a perfect collectors and players peice in any library.

Enjoy!

Excellent diagrams, poor paper quality
This is a great book. It covers equine anatomy in detail so you know what you are working with. The are tons of diagrams and drawings. It reads like a textbook, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it's not exactly easy, light reading at bedtime :) The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is that the book feels cheaply made. The paper is very thin, and it seems like someone just xeroxed the pages and mailed them out. The cover should be plastic or a thicker bond of paper. Don't get me wrong, the spiral binding is a great idea--makes it easy to have a page open at the stables. But my pags are aleady starign to tear out a bit.

A "Must Have" for the Equestrian, Horse Owner, Trainer
For less than a fraction of the cost of a single massage session, utilizing the techniques in is wonderful book enables you to free up your horse from aches, pains, and holding patterns at a minimum. The charts and diagrams alone are worth the price.

In a few short sessions, I have been able to reduce swelling from a deep hematoma in a horse I work with who suffered a recent fall, just one example of improved circulation. He is more relaxed, moves more freely, is comfortable in his own skin now, and more able to learn. It also does wonders for deeper bonding and improving your relationship.

This book is well thought-out, easy to use, and the spiral binding is very useful. Mr. Hourdebaigt is one of few masters in the relatively new field of ESMT. One does well to learn from him.

Every so often a book comes along that just WOWs you.
This is the WOW book to which the title refers. . . It is, for lack of a better description, "everything you need it to be".

As a Clinical Massage Therapist I have become accustomed to dealing with physicians and their patients. . . When I got a call from a VET I was, well, taken aback. Having been a CCMT for many years, I knew what to expect and where to find problems in a HUMAN, but this book filled in absolutely every gap I could have come up with in regards to equine physiology, anatomy, kinesiology and the basics of "don't do this around a horse if you want to make it to your next patient" . . .

To start off with, it's spiral bound so it's super easy to take to the stable! The illustrations are terrific and the text doesn't speak to you like you're a fifth grader; it assumes that if you're working on horses, you at least know the basics of working on humans. And finally, it's encouraging. . . It let's you know some of the pitfalls before they happen and how to avoid them.

I'm really glad I picked this one up!

I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in Equine Massage!

This book gives meaning to the word Spirituality
I have been on my spiritual path for many years. This book showed the way in which a person can connect with their own spirituality and make sense of it. Wonderful ways to make your connection and work on your spiritual growth are within the book. The author gave insight into her own struggles and growth in finding her own spirituality. I have read this book several times and highly recommend it. A must for the serious person on their spiritual path.

Truly empowering, uplifting and inspirational ! A MUST read!
The God-Mind Connection ( and the books which follow in the the trilogy) outline for us how to achieve all that we want - both spiritually AND materially.( No, they are NOT mutually exclusive!!) How to achieve true success and real peace of mind. The most amazing thing is that it is all available to us simply for the asking - no special exercises, no sacrifices. AND IT WORKS!!! This is a must read if you want to know how to have everything you ever wanted for yourself and for those you love. And you'll want to give a copy to everyone you care about, too!

I highly recommend this book!
I first read this book several years ago, and I credit it with helping me find a focus for my spiritual yearnings. It is well-written, in plain, easily understood language, with practical suggestions and exercises for the individual to learn to get in touch with their Source Within. The author shares some of her own journey, which helped me gain deeper insight to the wisdom given forth by those designated as The Brotherhood. This wisdom is practical and applicable to everyday living. As a practicing holistic consultant, I utilize many of the concepts and exercises in this book with clients in helping them learn to develop their own Connection Within.
