See the Real New Mexico!
I used this book as a guide for a two-week driving trip through New Mexico. It was fantastic! I was especially glad I took it along -- because I lost a day due to a flat tire and it was so easy to change my plans and not feel like I was missing out on something great. The details are excellent and the authors must have truly enjoyed researching the restaurants, lodging, and points of interest. Good choices, all!

The Age of Chance: Gambling in Western Culture
Published in Paperback by Routledge (2002)
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:
Most authoritative modern text on the subject
This is the most illuminating, up-to-date, and entertaining history of gambling in the West that has yet been published. I was a student at the University of Salford (UK) when I had to read this as part of a course on the sociology of gambling. Reith's style is scholarly, yet accessible. This text stands as an example of how interesting and diverse the historical/ cultural development of gambling has been, and of how much gambling can tell us about modern society and, as such, stands as a riposte to the yawn-inducing tedium of the 'problem gambling' school of books on this topic, which consists of a bunch of safety-merchants/salesmen who (presumably) aspire to scholary wisdom, yet fail miserably to say anything useful about one of the most fundamental of human traits: the itch for play. In short, Gerda Reith's book should be required reading for anyone who is interested in why anyone would take a chance on anything (and not just gambling).
The Amerasia Spy Case: Prelude to McCarthyism
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (1996)

If you want to understand McCarthyism, you have to read this
In 1950, Joe McCarthy started telling USAmericans that there was a Great Communist Conspiracy that had infiltrated the U.S. govt., the Press, the churches, you name it. One of his prime exhibits was the AMERASIA case, where what started as an espionage conspiracy suddenly, mysteriously collapsed. "It's true," said the Right and the Republicans. "Nonsense you're all paranoids," said Democrats, liberals, and the Left. Now, thanks to Klehr and Radosh, we have the truth, and it is stranger than anything either side ever suspected. There were multiple, independent, overlapping conspiracies, at AMERASIA magazine (to spy for Stalin),in the State Dept. (to undermine FDR's China Policy), in the Communist movement (to shape U.S. policy) in the Justice Dept. (to cover up political embarrassments) and in Congress (to cover up the other conspiracies). Had the truth been told then, we might have been spared some of the worst political messes of modern times. Highly Recommended.

Harvey's First Collection, Possibly His Best
This is the first paperback collection of Harvey's work, and no collection is complete without it. There are more one- and two-page stories than his later work, and this edition does concentrate on Harvey's work life more than anything else. The longer story on how he got to meet Bob Crumb is priceless. It never fails to amaze me how truthful Harvey is about his character flaws, and that's one reason his work is so compelling. Definitely worth the money and time to have Amazon hunt this one down for you.
The Art of the Funnies: An Aesthetic History (Studies in Popular Culture)
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Mississippi (1994)
Amazon base price: $46.00

Peddlers and Poets Abound
Once again R.C. Harvey has laid bare the skeletal structure of what makes comics a truly great medium of personal expression and artistic accomplishment. His insightful and often poignant anecdotes help bring the casual comics reader to a level of deeper appreciation and reverence for what many people regard as "kids stuff".
Most touching is his examination of George Herriman in Chapter 10. His ability so see beyond the surface "gags" and expose the boundless themes of love and pain truly make Herriman the metaphysical poet that Harvey titles him. Harvey's own observations are particualrly powerful and coalesque into not just an observation on the art of the funnies or the medium of comics in general, but serve as a reminder that all art is a personel expression and that these "comics" can be a bridge to a deeper understanding of human nature and American society.

Behavior Management at Home: A Token Economy Program for Children and Teens
Published in Paperback by Specialty Press (1996)

Very Effective Program
Best program I've seen for behavior management at home. As a parent of daugthers (ages 13 & 11), this program proves to be very effective for most any age child. This book provides easy step-by-step instructions with examples for start behaviors, stop behaviors and rewards/privileges in just 22 pages. The book also comes with several pre-printed charts where you and your child can fill in the behaviors and privieges you choose. Great for ADHD children/families. We have used this program for 5 months now and it has worked wonderfully for us all. A very positive parenting tool.
