Better understand "Food Wars" between the USA and Europe
This engaging and colorful account of the history of U.S. food regulation provides excellent perspective for better understanding the recent spate of high-profile, food regulation trade disputes between the U.S.and Europe, and within Europe, such as the "Banana Wars", "British Beef", and "Genetically modified corn" incidents. A must-read for anyone who who has interest in the unique nature and psychology of government actions in dealing with issues around "our daily bread". This book appears to have been subjected to a very rigorous "peer review" and I expect it will become a classic reference work.

a positive review of an excellent book
a brillant, insightful exposition of a fascinating subject -- a must read for historians and all persons interested in government regulation.

Power/Holiness/Evangelism: Rediscovering God's Purity, Power
I purchased this book as a second thought, and found out I got more than I bargained for. The level of expertise and experience with God impressed me initially, but it was the depth of each topic presented by each of the authors that shocked me. When dealing with God and spiritual subjects in books, there are so many approaches, and many that are really weird, but in this book the contributing authors do much to show by scriptures and experience the reality of the need for the church to be seeking God's power, holiness, and evangelistic outreach to the human race. This is not a book of testimonies alone, but scriptures and the reality of the topics listed in the title. Another book that assisted me in certain sections of this book was I Give You Authority by Charles Kraft. Though much different in subject, it assisted me in understanding some things that are occurring in the South American churches. I highly recommend this book for one's bookself, not only for reading, but as a text book for what is happening in Christianity today.

Unity and Passion for God
The chapters are written by individuals from various backgrounds who are sensing the Holy Spirit drawing them into a closer relationship with God. This purity of heart has been documented in past and present revivals around the world.

Classic-to-be on Southern History
Dr. Jackson has put together a great all-around volume on four of the major rivers in Alabama. The Alabma River system played a major role in the settlement and development of the territory and the state. This is a highly readable volume that should be in the library of those interested in Alabama history and culture. Perhaps the best volume on Alabama that I have read.

Outstanding Gift To All Alabamians
In time, this book will serve as a major secondary source for Alabama historians, students of history and researchers. Much like "The Federal Road...", which this writer has previously reviewed, "Rivers Of History" is a scholarly and comprehensive work pertaining to the impact of one of the fundamental elements evident in the progression of Alabama history. From the earliest days of the Mississippi Territory, to the present day, Alabama's rivers have served as both the bloodlines and guide posts of the state - representing demarcation of counties, providing the venue by which Alabama's 19th Century cotton economy could thrive, enriching vast areas of agricultural lands with literally hundreds of tributaries of varying sizes, and allowing for Alabama's intricate network of hydro-electric power generating plants. Dr. Jackson focuses on the Coosa, Tallapoosa, Cahaba and Alabama rivers, as these four bodies have been central to the aforementioned attributes of Alabama's waterways. In political, geographic and economic consequences, these four rivers constitute the very heart of the evolution of Alabama. Dr. Jackson's narrative is greatly enhanced by his natural ability to present an academic subject in an inviting, readable form. Citing the fact that "too often historians write with other historians in mind", he establishes an instant rapport with the pedestrian reader, without compromising the scholarship of the book, a fact evidenced by the book's numerous annotations. Yet, while the annotations attest to the depth of his research, Dr. Jackson's natural ability as a writer separates this book from that vast yearly output by other, less talented academicians who rely upon footnotes as a crutch upon which recitation rests as a surrogate for originality. As this reviewer consistently states, Alabama history is best studied by subject. A concentrated study of Alabama's major rivers has been sorely missing, and Dr. Jackson's "Rivers Of History" solidly fills that void. This reviewer highly recommends the book and hopes to see more offerings from Dr. Harvey Jackson.

just plain good life story
A very good autobiography, infact the best I have ever read. Goes through his life in detail. From Aliquippa to Pitt to Dallas and Denver and all the mishaps and action that happened in these places. It also gives good growing up details and how it was like in family. A very exquisite book.

Incredible survey of the life of a Superstar Running Back
One of the all time great running backs in the NFL Tony Dorsett leaves nothing to the imagination as he describes the his life from childhood, to the University of Pittsburgh, to the Dallas Cowboys and the end of his career with the Denver Broncos. A must read to learn about all the difficulties of being in the spotlight. One of the best books I have read.

Russia in Space
Harvey presents a good summary of all aspects of the Russian space program and an excellent summary of Russian activities since the Cold War ended. The author includes very thorough, item-by-item descriptions of each aspect of the manned program, international participation, and of military, scientific, communication, and other civilian satellites including their design, their launch vehicles, their engines, and their launch sites. Harvey documents the decline in the Russian program and comes down somewhat hard on the problems that the Russians have faced since the downfall of the Soviet regime. Yet, despite the decline, the book is hopeful about the longer-term reconstitution of the Russian space program. Harvey writes well and includes well-chosen anecdotes. Good photographs, tables, and maps; complete summary of Russian space launches from 1992 to 2000; six pages of notes and references; seven-page index. Highly recommended as a thorough, well-balanced, up-to-date treatise of the Russian space program. All levels.

Russia may very well hold the key to space
For those who think that NASA is the only way to go into space, read this excellent book, and you will see that the Soviets, and now Russia, really have an incredible history, and a bright future ahead, providing they can cope with their financial problems. The quality and imagination of the russian space program is incredible, and it would be a invaluable loss if it had to collapse completely... because it may very well be this program that will get us out of our craddle.

Well presented, easy to read. exceptionally informative.
This book should be in every home. It covers safety hazards of every nature. It applies to families with children, seniors, and everyone who might not be aware that dangers lurk just about everywhere in our environment. I would say that it is a "cookbook" for safer living.

excellent and well written book on consumer safety.
I enjoyed reading this book. I found it to be very informative on consumer issues and safety. Would recommend this book to a friend.

An indispensable reference book for all theatre techies !
Working backstage? Asked by your local community theatre to pitch in doing props? Foolishly said, "Of course I can build a tree(Silly fool only God can)! Here are the helpful hints and clues that will point you in the right direction without looking like a total fool. Design, construction, lights and sound- Oren Parker has it all. This latest edition is my third copy! They just keep getting better and better. This "rumor" best explains the abilities of one of the authors. A colleague once related the story in which Oren Parker showed up in the university scene shop in a three piece suit, painted a full back drop and walked out without a drop of paint on the suit. I'd be interested in knowing how true this is but not any less impressed with how informative this book has been for me. Well worth the exorbitant price.

Invaluable guide for novices and professionals
I can't tell you how often I've found myself saying "I'm a carpenter, not a designer!" when asked to design a set. I've always muddled through, but now, with this book in hand, I've found 100% more confidence in my designs. Invaluable for the lighting designer who wants to better understand scenic design, and for the scenic designer who wants to understand lighting design. Buy it!

A Page Turner
This is a superb book. I couldn't put it down. Extremely well written and a must have for anyone interested in football from the fans point of view.

Finally, a view not biased by finance
I can't recommend this book stronger. For Manchester United fans it's the opportunity to follow a year with the side from the untainted by the PLC view of the supporter. For Reds abroad, it serves as the perfect reminder of home. For non-United or those not football supporters it's a chance to understand what we go through. Well written and personal, Paul and Linda have created a book you'll want to dip into time and time again.

Clarity on non-self
The Buddhist doctrine of anatta, non-self, proclaims that the self does not really exist. This is so contrary to our Western presuppositions -- remember Descartes's claim that nothing was more certain than the existence of the self-- that it can be hard to grasp. Peter Harvey has elucidated this concept with scholarly excellence, and, even more important, with clear and lucid prose. All his books on Buddhism display a talent for exceedingly clear and plain exposition, and this is nowhere needed more. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the philosophical side of Buddhism.

An indispensible guide to the Buddhist view of the mind.
This book is gives a clear exposition of what is meant by the "mind" in Buddhism. It has a sound historico-textual basis and an insightful and new way of approaching the subject. It would be perfect though if aspects of Mahayana Buddhist views on the matter are given more attention. It is nevertheless an execellent work in itself since it is concerned with early Buddhism rather than later Buddhism.
