Very highly recommended and rewarding reading
Bound For Shady Grove is Steven Harvey's celebration of the music arising from the southern Appalachian mountain communities. Harvey's essays derive from the four seasons of a life in music. The early pieces describe playing music in the log house of friends born and raised in the mountains, or entering a banjo contest and losing with style. Then there are his essays about fiddles and the devil, homemade instruments and homemade weapons, a trip to England to trace mountain songs back to their elusive sources. As Bound For Shady Grover progresses, the mood darkens, with essays exploring the connection between music and resentment, loss, and death. Harvey's explorations showcase descriptions of music, hills, and people, and take the reader just where the music and the mountains took him. Bound For Shady Grove is very highly recommended and rewarding reading for students of Appalachian history, culture, and music.

required reading for old-time banjo players
'Bound for Shady Grove' is a collection of personal insites into music and life. The music and words of some Appalachian ballads are woven with events in Steven Harvey's life, playing in a banjo competition, a trip to England, recovering from heart surgery. I found an instant kinship in his outlook.

This story has a great after taste.
The tape media adds the dimension of keeping you going and at the same time lets you think. You may still need a printed copy to see how certain words and names are spelled. On the surface this looks like just such a novel. It even has the standard formula of princes and castles and what not. Why would I have even attempted this novel? My wife insisted that Caroline Harvey; Joanna Trollope was not mindless. O.K. so I was challenged to red this one.
Ha! I spotted the formula and as soon as Lila Cunningham hit Malta I figured out pretty much how it was going to end. A curious thing happened. By then I was hooked and had to go on. There were many details that I did not guess. Unlike most formula books that try to hook you on romance or those ones that have endless nonsensical descriptions, this book had the feel that it was going somewhere and only described what was necessary to tell the story.
After I finished the book I said "See it was a formula book." Why would someone want to read about some girl in Malta? It was pointed out that the setting is to depict a different lifestyle. This is not so much of an escape from reality, but a diversion of a different reality. Later you see that the castle and prince and even the Perrimans are the backdrop of real people that we run across everyday. Lila's situations and decisions are ones we may have to make. The real story is about Lila, her choices and consequences. The story implies that she grows up. Personally I think she changed but that does not constitute growing up.
Ayn Rand says that love is a reflection of your values as seen in the other person. You can see this as Lila's values changed, so has the target of her love. Ayn Rand also says that you should not just live for love. You should have a career and or a purpose beyond love. Lila and others discover this throughout the novel. So this novel leaves you with many after thoughts.
Well done Caroline Harvey.

Enjoyable WW II romance
For the past three years, Lila Cunningham has dreamed of leaving her small village to live in London. However, almost twenty-one, Lila realizes her hopes seem out of reach due to her Pa's bungling that has left the family near financial ruin. A desperate Lila turns to her employer, the Perriams for guidance. The elderly couple offers Lila a deal. Lila and Pa can serve as caretakers of their home on the island of Malta.

Lila and Pa find the Perriman mansion in terrible shape with a peasant family squatting inside the home. As Hitler turns his attention on the island, so do some of the residents turn their eyes towards Lila. Schoolteacher Angelo Saliba wants the Englishwoman as his own. However, Lila ignores the native islander in favor of the exciting Anton, nephew to Count Tabia. Anton goes off to war with Lila vowing to wait for his return. As the war hits home, Lila begins to realize that substance is more important than a few luxuries, but is it too late for the transplanted Englishwoman?

The first Caroline Harvey novel published in America is a joy for fans of World War II romances. THE BRASS DOLPHIN is an exciting tale whose non-stop story line centers on what truly matters in life. The characters are intelligent and make the early stages of WW II seem as if it's on the TV. Internationally renowned for her works under the name of Joanna Trollope, Ms. Harvey will leave her admiring readers demanding the release of her other Harvey novels previously published in England.

calcucus is DA bomb!!
when i was back in the vietnam war, my commander made us all take calcucus. he said a whole bunch of loogie about how it would make us better soldiers. well, little did i know that he was right. one day, when i was out in the heat of the battle, i came upon an unaware guerilla who did not know calucucus, i immediately figured out the derivation of my rifle and with a few simple calcultions, i was able to blow my opponent out of the water from several feet with my high powered rifle. take calcuclus and save your life and your country's life. go calcucluals!!!!

Book wonderful and easy to understand; Saxon does it again!
This book teaches the advanced topics of calculus in a manner that one does no learn one day and forget in a month. The Saxon series learning premise is that of an 'incremental development', which means once a skill is acquired and it is practiced, another fascet is added, and then another until you have a full understanding of the material. This book is great for anyone at all who wants to learn Calculus; not just students. It is recommended that the book "Advanced Mathematics" should preceed this because the first part "Calculus" quickly reviews all the topics in that book. So, I say get the book and try it; it is the best way to learn Calculus!

The Chiapas Rebellion: The Struggle for Land and Democracy
Published in Paperback by Duke University Press (1998)
Author: Neil Harvey
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

A thorough and respectful analysis
You will be hard pressed to find another book written with this level of analysis. The Zapatista rebellion was not an overnight reaction to a single set of economic rules, but is rather the manifestation of centuries of injustices, financial hardships and lack of political efficacy. This book explains the multitude of issues and events leading to the Zapatista rebellion. Dr. Harvey is a scholar who understands the political complexity and communicates this for all to understand.

The definitive account in English on the Chiapas Rebellion.
The book has all the substance and objectivity of a scholarly work by someone who has done research in Chiapas for over a decade, but unfolds with all the suspense of a good novel. It is the definitive account to date on this very important topic and a significant contribution to the debate on indigenous rights.

Child Neurology
Published in Hardcover by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (15 April, 2000)
Authors: John H. Menkes and Harvey B. Sarnat
Amazon base price: $139.00
Average review score:

The Gold Standard reference text for Child neurology
This is a reference text for Child Neurology. However, it is quite "readable" and can be finished in a month's rotation, if one is motivated to do so. It is very clearly written, but does not have many tables or illustrations. Still, it is the best and most current reference text available for Child Neurology.

Excellent textbook
I was recently introduced to this textbook by a child neurologist while I was on an elective at my medical school; he had used an earlier edition during his training and spoke glowingly of it. It's a quite comprehensive text written in a very clear style (a boon for tired eyes and tired minds at the end of the day), and its fairly reasonable price makes it accessible to medical students and residents. Another excellent child neurology book is the one by Berg, however, it has not been updated and there are apparently no plans to release another edition. In short, Menkes' and Sarnat's book is a very valuable addition to the aspiring child neurologist's library.

Vivid and touching
This is a wonderful book, beautifully written and immensely touching. The author interweaves vivid descriptions of his farm and its inhabitants -- both past and present -- with his observations on cider-making, the care of apple orchards, his wife's art, and his memories of his late, much-loved daughter. He doesn't gloss over the irony that, after he spent years working on nuclear testing, his daughter should contract breast cancer; but he isn't polemical about it, and by the end of the book his personal tragedy is subsumed into the rhythms of the seasons and the ongoing life of the farm. The timeline of the book is circular -- it's not a straightforward history -- but I felt that this further emphasized the cyclical nature of life in the orchard. I recommend the book unreservedly.

Tender hearted memoir
This is a very special tenderly written book about living...loving...working... and dieing. Every one can find something to relate too with Harvey in this book. I would highly reccomend it.

A Color Handbook of Skin Diseases of the Dog and Cat

Excellent combination of pictures and text
Most books on Dermatology I know have good pictures OR good text. This one has good pictures AND good (although brief) text. Furthermore, the conditions are arranged by the predominant sign (pruritus, alopecia, inflammation, etc.) which facilitates greatly finding the disease you are dealing with. On top, the authors frequently give you a list of the rule-outs you should consider in each case. Diagnosis of dermatoses is still difficult but, without this book, it might be impossible. Iowa State Press managed again to put out a great book at a small pice. Get it!

A great first dermatology atlas!
Ever since I graduated from vet school I have been looking for a good dermatology atlas. It seemed like the ones that had nice photos had just that, no text, and the ones that DID have text with each picture only told you about the disease but not what to do with it. This book has it all - for each disease, a definition, etiology and pathogenesis, clinical features, ddx, diagnostic tests and so important - management. Oh and nice colour photos. What I found weird at first was the way the book is laid out - not by dermatoses cause, as I would expect (like - parasites, allergies, systemic, etc) but by they way they appear - pruritic, nodular, ulcerative, endocrine, etc. But in the end it made sense.

The Content of Faith: The Best of Karl Rahner's Theological Writings
Published in Hardcover by Crossroad/Herder & Herder (1993)
Authors: Karl Rahner, Karl Lehmann, Albert Raffelt, and Harvey D. Egan
Amazon base price: $49.50
Average review score:

Good Collection of a Great Theologian
Karl Rahner has been perhaps the single most influential Catholic theologian of the 20th century. He has served the Church in numerous ways, but he has also maintained his integrity and acumen in theological writings that are both inspired and inspiring in their beauty.

Rahner's theology is a very complicated one, yet he presents it in a beautiful, poetic and devotional way. ~The Content of Faith~ is a collection of some of his most important writings from a long career, and is thus broken up into shorter segments that are easily digestible. This is not a systematic theology. Even the layperson with little interest in theology can sit down and read one of these pieces and be inspired by the beauty of Rahner's vision of God.

I am not a Catholic, yet I appreciate Rahner tremendously and would heartily recommend this book to anyone. There are indeed some pretty heavy essays in here, but don't get bogged down by those - there is plenty here for everyone.

To Review the theological writings of Karl Rahner
This book is probably the best in the series of books by Karl Rahner. Not only does it sum up the theology of the Roman Catholic Church, but it also sums up the works of Rahner himself. With chapters about Jesus, God, Mary, Christology, Extestentialism, and Angels, it is truly a must for any theological buff.

"Dear Old Kit": The Historical Christopher Carson
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (1902)
Authors: Harvey Lewis Carter and Kit Kit Carson's Own Story of His Life Carson
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Kit Carson's autobiography
Kit Carson is one of my favorite historical figures and this is my favorite book about him. Carter republishes and annotates Carson's laconic autobiography of adventures as a fur trapper, mountain man, indian fighter, soldier, and explorer. Carson went from being an illiterate saddlers's apprentice in 1825 to one of the famous men in America by the end of his life in 1868. A small, unprepossessing man, he never learned to read or write, never made any money, and was modest, even ashamed of his fame. Arguably, Carson lived through more adventures than anyone else in American history.

Carter admires his subject which is good because Kit Carson is sometimes portrayed these days as a monstrous genocidiare because of his role in defeating the Navajos and forcing them to move to a reservation on which many of them died. In reality, Carson was a relatively humane soldier who often defended the rights of the Indians and who became a good agent on their behalf. But, unlettered and overly impressed by the authority, judgments, and education of his superiors, Carson didn't possess the moral courage and confidence to challenge his orders to suppress the Navajos.

Carter's research into Carson's life is thorough. He employs the unusual technique of publishing Carson's autobiography as written and commenting on it in extensive footnotes. Some might find this irritating as your eyes must move from text to footnote constantly. Carter also publishes a large collection of photographs of Carson, examines his fame, and extolls his virtues.

To my mind, Kit Carson is the premier hero of the western expansion of the U.S. Carter's book is one of the most accurate and well-researched accounts of Carson's remarkable life.

A Combination Biography and Autobiography
This is a readable and scholarly work that should be part ofthe library of anyone who is an aficionado of the Old West. This bookexplained to me not only who Kit Carson was, but why he was significant. Although the author makes a good case for why Carson can be considered a hero, he also doesn't shy away from commenting on the man's mistakes. The biography seemed thoughtful, balanced, clear, concise, and thoroughly researched. Moreover, this book is particularly special because, in addition to the author's biography, it contains the complete text of Kit Carson's own autobiography, along with biographer Carter's helpful annotations to it. There are also some photos giving the biography and autobiography an added dimension. Two more points: Carson's life is exciting-- he was a mountain man, an explorer, a scout, a cavalry officer, and more! Also, this biography is only about ten years old, so you know that Carter is basing his inferences on fairly reliable, up-to-date research! All in all, I'd say that whether you're a novice or an expert on the subject, if you had to read or own just one book about Kit Carson, this should be it.

Empowering Yourself: The Organizational Game Revealed
Published in Hardcover by Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company (1996)
Author: Harvey J. Coleman
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

Harvey Coleman is absolutely on the mark...
The insights and candor found in this book are at times chilling. Mr. Coleman hits the nail on the head, and this book should become a part of the "corporate player's" library.

"Empowering Yourself" is an Ivy-league MBA in a book
"Empowering Yourself" is an excellent source of information on how the real game is played. This is a book that needs to be read twice. The first time you read Coleman's work, you will feel helpless, angry, and even have the desire to revolt against the status quo. The first reading really motivates you to either change the system or merely give up even trying to play. On the second pass, you really get a feel for the power of this book. You realize that "Empowering Yourself" is a blueprint to success. Coleman is merely providing the reader with the design for success in the world we live in. It is up to the reader to decide whether it is worth going through with these plans. The analogy which I get from this book lies in the similarities between the "Rules of the Game" and the laws which govern gravity. We have all had the desire to fly, unbounded by the earth, flying free as a bird. But to do so, we would have to suspend the laws of gravity. As much as we revolt against physics, the laws of gravity will not be broken by man. Neither will the power structure which we currently live under (at least not in our lifetime). So it is the readers choice to learn to fly by man-made methods, become a modern day Don Quixote and fight the windmills of societys power structure, or be content to travel the earth by foot. This is a must read for all those who want to fly and are willing to pay the price.
