A moving collection of stories
"A Letter to Harvey Milk," by Leslea Newman, is a collection of 9 stories that explores what it means to be Jewish and lesbian in America. The book includes a glossary of the many Yiddish terms used in the stories.

Newman deals with a number of issues throughout the book: the AIDS crisis, President Reagan's controversial visit to Bitburg, the legacy of the Holocaust, religious chauvinism, "coming out" to parents, preservation of the Yiddish language, and more. Some of her issues seem a bit obvious and even forced, but overall she handles the material effectively.

I found the best story in the collection to be the title story; it's about the relationship between an elderly Jewish man and his writing teacher, a young Jewish lesbian. Also impressive is "The Gift," which consists of snapshots of a woman's life from age 5 to adulthood. "Something Shiny" tells the story of a woman's participation in a lesbian & gay march on Washington. Although much of the book has a dated feel, overall the collection is very moving, and Newman effectively uses touches of humor to offset the seriousness of much of her subject matter. For interesting companion texts, try "Rubyfruit Jungle," by Rita Mae Brown, and "Zami," by Audre Lorde.

Thanks to College Professor
I read this book as part of my women's studies class and want to thank my professor, Marlene Howell, for leading me and my classmates to this book several years ago. This book really opened my eyes to two worlds that I, as a boring, straight, Presbyterian girl, had always been fascinated by: Judaism and Lesbianism. Newman structures her book so that each of the stories represents one candle on the Hannakah menorah, revealing each woman's fears and issues as they come to terms with their sexuality, religious, and personal issues such as sexual abuse. There are reflections on the Holocaust and discrimination against Jews and homosexuals. While Newman helped me to reflect on my own sexuality, and to discover my own love for other women-without erotic details-you don't need to be bi, lesbian, or Jewish to take something away from this book.

Incredibly Moving Short Story Collection
This was a truly amazing collection of short stories - it's not easy to pull someone into another world in just a few pages, but Leslea Newman can do it. I've already passed this on to two other friends. This is a book you want to share. :) Laura

A most concise and integral reference on MH applications
This highly rated manual, covers just about every practical and tangible theoretical introduction to the full design and/up to implementation cycle of MH projects, all in about 370 pages. It is important that it was written and amply illustrated not only with detailed schematics, but also with actual pictures from original installations in developing countries, which makes a viable aid in comprehending the "actual picture". The chapters covered detail a syllabus in: Components and Design of an MH Scheme, Cost benefit estimations, Hydrology and site survey, Flow prediction, Civil works and operational parts (all aspects from Weirs to Penstocks), Commercial engineering, Turbines (including reverse pumps), Governing, Drive systems, a very thorough presentation of the -cumbersome- Electrical Power System aspects, along with Operational, Maintenance, Financial and Commissioning aspects. Should there be something more for an engineer to wish for, would be more info on turbines -something you would expect to find in a specialized book on the subject anyway. The book should provide a valuable asset not only to MH engineers, but to Renewable Energy Technology engineers as well, since it is progressively becoming apparent that a combination of RET along with Pumped Storage and MH, presents a highly attractive opportunity for both developed and developing countries

Superb work, Nobel-Prize worthy
The insight given in this book is, without a doubt, beneficial not just to mankind, but also and especially developing countries. I highly recommend.

Essential Reading on the Subject
This book describes all the aspects involved in gettting a micro hydro plant running. It has the right blend of "The birds eye view" on the subject, very useful to people, new to the subject as well as "earth worm view": You can use this use this book as a guide to select the right kind of drive pulley for you plant.

The Mind of Oswald: Accused Assassin of President John F. Kennedy

An original, revealing, informative study.
Diane Holloway is a retired Dallas psychologist who was involved with the psychological assessment of one of Lee Harvey Oswald's assassination targets, Major General Edwin Walker (when Attorney General Robert Kennedy ordered an evaluation because of Walker's bizarre anti-government activities). Holloway as painstakingly gathered the works of Lee Harvey Oswald over a period of ten years and in The Mind Of Oswald: Accused Assassin Of President John F. Kennedy, incorporates Oswald's letters, diary, book about Russia, miscellaneous papers, notes, address book, job applications, radio interviews, and post-arrest television statements into a remarkable presentation of Oswald and the times leading up to the Kennedy assassination. The Mind Of Oswald is a "must read" for anyone with an interest in the Kennedy assassination, its impact on the American political system, and the controversies that surrounded it then -- and some of which continue to linger in the public mind to this day.

Breath of fresh air in the JFK assassination literature!
Dr. Diane Holloway's new book, The Mind of Oswald, is a breath of fresh air in the JFK assassination literature. As a former FBI agent, attorney, and judge (in fact, I was the presiding judge in the much celebrated case depicted in the recent movie "Boys Don't Cry"), I rely on facts. I am so pleased that someone, and especially a psychologist, has looked at the facts about accused assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald. The facts are what he said and wrote. Then she looked at it from the psychological viewpoint. The psychological approach is much like our approach; the best indicator of future behavior is past behavior. Dr. Holloway, a retired Dallas psychologist, has taken all of Oswald's words and life and tried to look at whether he was the kind of person who would kill a president. It is an excellent approach. I heartily recommend this book and give it a five star rating. Libraries would do well to add this to their list because there is too much crazy conspiracy literature available and the facts are needed about this important tragedy. Judge Robert T. Finn.

This book is worth your time!
Dr. Holloway has done a meticulous job of researching the career of Lee Harvey Oswald and sharing her findings with us. She has several unique perspectives working for her: being in Dallas at the time of the Kennedy assassination; having tested Gen. Edwin Walker, whom Oswald undoubtedly tried to shoot some months before JFK was shot; being a psychologist and thus able to give the reader her expert take on Oswald's capacity for violence. I felt as if I were able to watch Oswald virtually every day of his life right up to the moment he was killed by Jack Ruby. One has to feel a little sorry for Oswald, who never seemed to be happy no matter where he was or what he was doing. He couldn't spell, he lied about his height, he was just such a loser his entire life. Besides the close look at Oswald, Dr. Holloway gives us the historical background--what was happening in the world as Oswald was being Oswald.

My Place in Space

One of my favorite books :)
I absolutely love this book. I am a teacher of both English as a Second Language and the gifted, and I have used it with both populations. The space pictures are beautiful, the other pictures are hilarious, and the information is both simply given and interesting. I would take exception to the rating of baby-preschool, both because I know high school students who enjoy it and because there is violence (albeit comical) in some of the pictures. For example, if you look at the playing field, you will see what appears to be a person getting decapitated with a tennis racket.

My Place in Space
As an astronomer and educator, I love to let people know how amazing the universe is. My Place in Space is a fun way to introduce children to the wonders of astronomy and awaken their curiosity. It's especially nice because of the two confident children, Henry and Rosie, who show us that children too can be wise. With vibrant illustrations and accurate text even adults will enjoy it and be left wanting to know more. I have given a copy to everyone I know who has children!

My Place in Space
This book is an excellent tool to use in teaching geography to children. It gives them a visual picture of where we are in the universe as well as helps them to see the size differences between countries, continents, etc. I use it every year with my third graders, and they love it!

From Off The Streets Of Cleveland Comes...
This comprehensive collection of American Splendor autobiographical comics by Harvey Pekar features the artwork of many prominent underground comic artists, including Jim Woodring, Joe Zabel, Gerry Shamray, Chester Brown, Spain, Drew Friedman, and R Crumb. But Pekar is truly the dominant force here. Whether he is trading records, arguing with people at work, getting sick, or losing the library's copy of "Confessions of Zeno," you'll get right inside his head as he muses, worries, broods and gets [angry] at the people in front of him in line. Strong stuff with a hard edge of realism.
Compiled from the American Splendor comic books published in the 70's and 80's (which are now largely unavailable), this is highly recommended for those who dig underground comics, new forms of biography or jazz (Pekar is also a renowned jazz reviewer and writer who sometimes talks about music in his comics).
This is not a psychedlic "head" comic, and it does not try to be hip. Harvey is no hippy, he's his own person. There is some social commentary in there too.

Exciting? No. Good plot? No. Good? Yes.
I came across this book in a second hand book shop. Battered and dog-eared it set me back two pounds. Well worth six times that. Harvey narrates as if he is talking right to you, all the while probably wondering if your going to buy the records he's offering or if you'll leave in time for him to watch the game. His stories are rich with human insight, a special fave of mine being a single page story when a nerdy looking filing clerk hurts his finger and gets a plaster for it only to be unexpectedly hugged by a weeping black vietnam vet who had his life saved by him. Other gems are Harvey getting shortchanged for some grapes and his seemingly endless old book and record bulk buys. If it sounds boring, trust me, it's not. American Splendor is also drawn by a massive variety of top artists, Robert Crumb, Chester Brown and Jim Woodring to name a few.

Not Your Average Superhero
I first became aware of Harvey Pekar from watching NBC's Late Night with David Letterman. Pekar, a Cleveland-based author and VA file clerk, refused to jump through the normal talk show hoops. (He even went so far as to wear an anti-NBC t-shirt during one of his appearances while the network was being struck.) Pekar has helped take comics beyond simply an entertainment for kids (the usual supermen in leotards). He tells stories of his everyday activities: record collecting, work, discovering wounded squirrels on the road, and appearing on David Letterman. Writing his own stories and having them illustrated by some of the best comic artists working, including R. Crumb, he's helped create a new form (or revive an old one?), the literary comic. Funny, interesting, and sometimes profound, Harvey Pekar is well worth checking out.

Inspirational book not unlike Conversations with God
This book enlightened me with the wisdom of the original Americans. It's hard to believe the Christians were trying to convert a people most likely much closer to God than themselves. Several Indians performed acts that would be considered miracles by those of other faiths. Wonderful book.

Very well rewarding, this book should be read by all.
Very good and truly authentic..

A MUST-READ BOOK!
This is one of the best books written about Native American spirituality. It is a book I shall treasure always. My one regret this that I was not able to meet and talk with Mr. King (Noble Red Man).

According to DR.shahab
Well, Dr.shahab from shariati hospital in Tehran told me to buy this book, hope it is as he said ,very very good.is it?

Learn with pleasure
This textbook is excellent for introducing people to the field of nuclear medicine. The book is divided in two parts: basic principles, chapters 1-4, and clinical scintigraphy, chapters 5-15, including one chapter entitled Pearls, pitfalls and FAQ. The book keeps the pace with the innovations occurred over the last five years since the first edition was published. The fundamental concepts of physics, nuclear pharmacy and instrumentation, are so pleasant and clear to read that easily will capture the attention of the busiest clinician. Residents are the main target of this book, but all those who teach nuclear medicine will find it useful for preparing their lectures as the sharpness is a main feature of the book. The book shows that the authors know perfectly what they write about, as they have taken the time to write what needs to be written concisely: for sure the authors enjoy their profession and care for patients by providing students with an excellent tool.

The most comprehensive book in the minimum pages possible
It was the best medical book that I had ever read.

Brilliant book by a brillian mind
The title of the book is interesting not only for its reference to Marx's famous statement but because Raymon Aaron was such a giant among intellectuals. This book, written in 1955, is a perfect indictment of the follies and inconsistencys of Marxist thought and intellectual fawning over the Soviet Union. Twenty years later, when I went to college, I had the same ideas but not Mr. Aaron's impressive prose and aplomb in destroying Marxist discourse. I wish I knew of the book back then. An excellen indictment on the longest folly of the 20th century.

Contunuing relevance of Aron's classic
Although Aron's treatise was published many decades ago as a brilliant and unsurpassed analysis of French intellectual culture, it has direct relevance for contemporary fads and foibles of Western cultural and intellectual life. Much of what goes on in the academy today becomes lucid when read within Aron's analytical framework. This book should be read by all who care about the education of their children.

One of the most profound books of the 20th century!
Aron's book deserves recognition as one of the classic works of 20th century intellectual history. Written 40 years ago during the battle of ideas between communism and liberal democracy, "The Opium of the Intellectuals" provided profound insight into the mind of the communist intellectual. Aron, a renowned French historian and philosopher, wrote this devastating critique of French radicals (such as John Paul Sartre) during the height of the Cold War. Unlike Albert Camus in his famous book "The Rebel", Aron fires his guns without mercy and exposes these intellectuals' penchant for irrationalism and extremism.

The book's title was derived from Marx's famous quote "Religion is the opium of the people". Marx's belief was that religion diverted people's attention from misery on earth by promising a glorious afterlife. Aron explains communism served this role for radical intellectuals who eloquently rationalized and apologized for communism's barbarism because its promise to deliver utopia on earth. In a nutshell, communism replaced Christianity and other established religions as a new faith, but one grounded in the secular world, not in the heavens. As in all religions, faith is paramount, not reason. Communism's monstrous crimes and wholesale destruction of the individual did not bother these radicals because they believed in the ultimate "means / ends" justification. Since only communism could deliver humanity to the promised-land, it was privileged by its goal, thus any crime could be rationalized as the part of the twisted path to salvation.

This masterpiece illustrates the dangers of radical intellectuals who take a wild leap into political fantasy for the sake of an idea. Fredrich Hayek, the famous Austrian economist, summarized it best 50 years ago when he stated "The distance between a single-minded idealist and a fanatic is just one step".

Popular Sporting Rifle Cartridges
This book is an absolute must read for everyone with an interest in hunting North American big game out of a rifled bore. Harvey's folksy, yet accurate and analytic, style eclipses all others in the field (except, perhaps, Wayne Van Zwoll's "Elk Hunting & Cartridges"). Popular Sporting Rifle Cartidges can be read from cover to cover, or used as a handy reference book, covering the full gamut of popular hunting cartridges available at time of publication. Only an update by Harvey himself could surpass this book in value.

The best book of its type I've ever read.
I've worn the cover off mine. Mr. Harvey, if you are listening.........please.........Let us have a reprint in hardback.......and maybe even volume two... Clay Harvey is the best hardcore rife/hunting author since Jack O'Connor...

The best objective book concerning hunting cartridges ever!
Clay Harvey has an informed, easy-going style that translates easily into a sometimes humorous and always factual (as backed by real shooting bench data)account. He reviews a wide variety of cartridges, from the venerable .220 Swift to the modern day wildcats. If you don't have any idea what type of rifle/cartridge combo to buy for your next hunt or have been a rifleman for 20 years, this book will be thoroughly enjoyed by all.

a physician's perspective
This book is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. It is equalled only by her second book, Sacred Poems and Prayers of Love. I am saddened to see that the book is out of print now, but am happy to see that the tape is available. The combination of Mary Ford-Grabowsky's selections, and Andrew Harvey's stunning reading should not be missed. I have given copies of this book and of the tape to some of my dying patients. They found it wonderfully comforting in their final hours. One woman also expressed to me how wonderful it was to have the book available to thumb through after her husband was gone -- she said it supported her through her immense grief. I anxiously await more from this author!

A great book! It brought me peace.
The author offers a path to real solace in a world, make that a country, where ethics just don't seem to matter. This book rekindles a spiritual connection that brings us back to a love for each other that will restore peace in our world.

A beautiful book!
A wonderful collection of prayers from all around the world and from a variety of traditions. Mary provides insightful introductions to each chapter. The book is beautifully printed and bound -- would make a great gift. Highly recommended!
