Magic School Bus Gets a Bright Idea

The Magic School Bus has the right idea about light
Ms. Frizzle and her class explore the world of light. From understanding how light needs a source to how shadows are made, this book is a wonderful teaching tool.
My nephew enjoyed this book while I was reading it to him as well. I believe that he grasped the concept of a shadow, because it was easy to demonstrate it while we were sitting in the car with sunlight around us.
The book also deals with the concept of tricking people and how it can come back to haunt you. :-)!
I think that this book is a wonderful aid in helping children learn the concepts of light.

Are you called to counsel?
If you're answering your call to counseling the needy, those in pain, the lost and forgotten then this book is for you. John White answers the many hidden questions about secular and Christian counseling. His style of writing is superb, easy to understand yet difficult since it's a complex subject. But the difficulty makes one yearn to search on, to continue helping those in need. I'm currently reading one of his other many books called Parents in Pain. He breaks down this complex and mystical service in bite size pieces easy to digest. Of coarse, with the grace of God John White has the ability show us how the mind and behavior can be changed. Outstanding book.

My Grandma's the Mayor
We often hear rhetoric about the importance of community spirit and kids are drilled with "it is better to give then receive". Through a touching story about Annie and her Grandma, the mayor, the author actually teaches kids the rewards of community involvement, but she acknowledges that it doesn't come without a cost. As Annie finds out, it can be tough to have your parent, or grandparent, heavily involved in the community. However, when there is a fire at an apartment house, Annie sees her Grandmother's commitment to helping her community through the crisis. Annie begins to understand the importance of her Grandmother's involvement, and she is filled with pride and is inspired to join in the effort to help. As with all of Marjorie White Pellegrino's books, the characters will move you, and teach you. This book should be in every elementary school library in the country.

An outstanding contribution to the study of Baptist history.
In Pilgrim Pathways: Essays In Baptist History In Honour Of B. R. White, William H. Brackney (principal of the Divinity College and professor of Historical Theology, McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada), Paul S. Fiddes (principal of Regent's Park College and a member of the Faculty of Theology at University of Oxford), and John H. Y. Briggs (principal of Westhill College of Higher Education in Selly Oak, Birmingham) collaborate to assemble fifteen contributors whose outstanding essays in Baptist history comprise an enduring memorial to Barrington Raymond White, an ordained Baptist Minister in the Baptist Union of Great Britain and tutor in Ecclesiastical History at Regent's Park College, and elected Senior Research Fellow in Ecclesiastical History in the College, Pastor in the college community, and dedicated to enriching the training for students in the Christian ministry. Pilgrim Pathways is highly recommended, informative, rewarding reading for students of Christian studies in general, and Baptist history in particular.

Fascinating!
As a white person who grew up in Detroit in the 1980s, this book caught my eye. Hartigan explores the ways in which whites are viewed in Detroit, in ways that can either emphasize or de-emphasize their whiteness. He explores whites in three different neighborhoods, where they are variously constructed as hillbillies, gentrifiers and racists, by interviewing and observing residents. He also brings into play the history of Detroit - the differences between the riots of the 40s and 60s - and examines the implications of racial tensions. Hartigan makes his topic vivid and interesting through his incorporation of personal narratives and his own experiences. This book is good not only for the anthropologist interested in American ethnography but also for the reader interested in race and history.

I couldn't put it down!
I've just finished reading "Raisins in the White Bread" by John P. Tibaldo, and found it to be the best thriller novel I've read in quite some time! It has all the feel of a Stephen King book without all of the obligitory sex, violence and foul language so common in a book designed to thrill. The characters seem very real and the author has captured the time frame the book is set in to a tee. It is very believable and says a lot about the Human condition, as well as society's attitude towards those of us that differ slightly from the norm. All this from a slim novel that I read cover-to-cover in one night! I truly could not put it down, and am anxiously awaiting the next offering from this author. Read this book! You, too, will find you know these people, and pehaps wonder where you might fit in.

Excellent Resource
Dr. McShea's book is an excellent review of the field and is a very good resource for students and graduate level literature discussion classes. I highly recommend it for anyone working in population biology or conservation ecology.

Based on talks given by White Eagle through Grace Cooke in London, UK, between 1943 and 1945, The Living Word offers a refreshing insight into the deeper meaning behind long-practiced ceremonies, such as Baptism--are children really born into sin?--and the true significance of the Creation--what is the difference between soul and spirit? It also answers questions regarding the Resurrection--did the physical body of Jesus actually rise from the dead?--and the true meaning of Salvation--who is the Saviour? It is well-known that the early Church was divided over its Christological controversies regarding the humanity and divinity of Jesus, but rather than being divisive, John's gospel, as translated in The Living Word of St.John "transcends the limits of dogma to bring the wisdom of the East and West together.
For those who enjoy Bible study, The Living Word is clearly set out. Each one of the twenty-one chapters includes the biblical passage from St.John's gospel and is followed by White Eagle's interpretation. "When the bible is read with understanding, when the light of the spirit is thrown upon its pages, you will discover many jewels of truth." White Eagle suggests that chapter fourteen, one of the most famous chapters, contains "the jewel of the whole gospel." It contains many well-known phrases: "in my Father's house are many mansions," and "the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works..." and White Eagle explains the esoteric significance of the words that through misinterpretation have long been a source of division: "I am the way, the truth and life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." Many have interpreted these words to mean that Christianity is the sole path to God. "Do not confuse Christ," says White Eagle, "with the man through whom he worked, Jesus of Nazareth, the Initiate."
The Living Word of St.John contains an important message. Like Jesus, we can all become "man made perfect." It is a book well worth reading.
