This is a book that every catholic should read !.
The Wisdom of John Paul II describes the Pope's innermost thoughts on subjects such as abortion, education, war, religion, and love. The book is well-written and interesting as well because it's made of quotes from speeches made by the Holy Father. The Pope's views on certain issues have often been controversial, but certainly there's a lot of wisdom in his words.

An insightful and inspiring gem
Nick Bakalar and Richard Balkin have scoured numerous encyclicals, speeches, and letters to assemble this wonderful treasury of Pope John Paul II's thoughts on many questions facing today's society. The result is a wealth of wisdom and insight from the most seen man in the world. This isn't a book of answers to life's vital questions; rather, it offers the Pope's and the Church's view on such issues and asks us to question our attitudes and feelings. The topics are far-ranging, both contemporary and timeless. Matters of love, family, death, women, work, and youth are addressed as well as subjects such as human rights and progress and the modern world. Bakalar and Balkin's greatest strength in composing this book is the wide spectrum they've selected from. These issues are universal, and you will find something that speaks to you. You'll probably discover much more.

"The Wisdom of John Paul II" is not only a great addition to your inspirational or religious library; it's also a great addition to any library. I suggest giving this book as a gift, especially if you're looking for something meaningful that can be read over and over (instead of being used as a dust-collector). Non-Catholics and even non-religious will find the Pope's words inspiring, and his message of universal love can be understood and appreciated by all. He does not viciously attack groups in conflict with Church teachings but graciously approaches controversy as does a leader of the faith. Wherever he acts as an apologetic, he does so with the patience and firmness that has guided the Church through more than two decades.

This book, in part, acts as an intimate autobiography as it his diary of his times and how he has confronted the Church and society he has been entrusted. What makes this papal journal stand out from the rest though is that it is more than a portrait of the Pope or a collection of his quotes. His words represent one man's thoughts, but it also gives us a strong picture of his vision for the Catholic Church of the new millennium. Every issue is one that immediately concerns contemporary society, and that makes this book such an enjoyable and necessary read.

An absolutely stunning piece of work.
This is a magnificent combination of text, photos, and drawings covering the period when the U.S. Navy came of age. In addition to depicting the ships, the book also does a great job of showing what day-to-day life was like in the Navy of that time. Just hope the publisher elects to reprint it!

A Great How-To Guide for Product Photography
This is an excellent book for those who need to take pictures of artwork, crafts or other products and need some help to achieve great results. I am a woodworker and I have read a number of things on the subject - articles, sections in other books, general photography books, etc - but mostly these deal with the very basics to get you started, but leave you with no idea where to go next. John White gives excellent coverage of the basics, but then gives lots of options, ideas and tips for taking your photos to a professional standard. He includes a range of equipment options for all techniques, usually working from the build-it-yourself option up to the top-of-the-line choice with pros and cons of each. He assesses the merits of buying new and used equipment with precise recommendations. He also discusses selecting film, labs to develop your work and even a pro photographer if you decide you still need to hire one. Although the book is aimed at photographing fine art, the principles are easily applied to any product photography. This is an excellent reference that will remain useful for years.

Wonderful reference.
(Amazon's new format now forces the reviewer to choose a numerical rating, as above; an objectionable requirement.)

Starting with the Ancient Greeks, this splended production ties art to history and the physical world, explaining trends, contexts, and movements, clearly mapping important sites, artistic exchange routes, materials sources, and more.

The reader is able to trace the development of the Western art tradition not only across time, but now across space as well.

Beautifully produced; generously illustrated with 300 illustrations and 150 excellent maps, and an exemplary index, this will be a welcome addition to the permanent reference shelf of any art lover.

An adventurous tale with inspiration for children
This is a wonderful book for both children and adults. For kids it is an adventurous tale about Mooseberry the mouse. The children learn about the importance of Christian values by learning the importance of saying kind words, serving others, sharing, and forgiving people by reading about how Mooseberry, the Mouse, brings color back into the world with the guidance of Captain Chameleon. The amazing thing about this book is the way in which the author handles the religious undertones- right down to the details. Toward the end, the last color left to regain in the rainbow was the color purple which symbolizes the forgiveness that Jesus has given us. As an adult I found myself reading this book to my husband because it was so good!

The Buffalo River in Black and White: The Photo Story That Won the Fight to Protect America's First National River
Published in Hardcover by Ozark Society Foundation (1998)
Authors: Neil Compton and John Heuston
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

What the Ozarks region is really like!
This book by the corageous and pro-active Dr. Neil Compton is a must-have for any river lovers or black/white photo buffs. There are approximately 88 photos by John Heuston that portray the gorgeous and pristine Buffalo National River in NW Arkansas. The introduction briefly explains the reasoning behind the compilation of the book. This river was almost dammed in several places until this collection of photos made it apparent that the natural beauty needed to be preserved for prosperity. Along with the Ozark Society Foundation and other unselfish environmentalists from the Ozarks, the Buffalo was saved and designated the first (and I believe only) national river on March 1, 1972. These actions have stimulated continuing land conservation in Missouri and Arkansas, and people of all sizes, race, and age can see what determination and passion can obtain. Trust me on this one; if you've never visited the river you will be magnetized by this book and if this area is your second home (as it is mine) you will smile ear to ear and cover to cover. See you down river.

Changing on the Inside

Emergence of the Real Human Person
With painful but gentle honesty so characteristic of other books Dr. White guides you through the dynamism of the real change of the human person. By the real change Dr. White means the long lasting transformation towards positive pattern, which in case of the human being means nothing less then being truly what humans were designed to be. The unique contribution of this book is that the psychology of change has been built on the solid theological background: Dr. White wants you to understand that the real change involves a fundamental change in the person's perception of reality. Declaring himself to be the Christian, author brings you to the understanding that "God is a real person, not a psychological state I induce in myself. He is there, so to speak, and is always able to interact with us. Turning one's awareness to God is therefore living in reality." But all this is given in small dozes. Very easy to understand and absorb. Have a nice reading!

I liked it better than the child I was reading it to.
The child that I read it to was only 3 years old, and of corse this was after he had watched a verion of it on video cassette. As I read it, he wanted to see pictures of charlotte, Templeton, and Wilbur, he wanted to see what they were doing. There is a couple of pictures in the book I have, but not anything a 3 year old would be interested in. Charlotte's Web is writen for older children, but you'd be surprized at the ages who would love it just as much if not more. I have no doubt that if there was a book published on a 3 year olds level, they would love reading it. Charlotte, Templeton and Wilbur are my 3 year olds nephew's best friends, and when ever he sees a Spider, Rat or Pig they are Charlotte, Templeton or Wilbur.
