Food Festival, U.S.A.
This is a fantastic book filled with great recipes. It serves as the perfect guide to America's food festivals. And the recipes, despite what the "official" review above states, are simple and easy. This book is not meant to serve as a replacement for the Joy of Cooking or Betty Crocker, therefore basic instructions in the art of cooking are not presented. By the way, if you can read, you can cook! These are recipes made by real people and eaten by real people. And those I have tried are delicious. Of course, there are a few that I think the author presented for local color, and that's fine. It all comes together, giving the reader a true taste of America.

An Encyclopedia of American Food
Get a copy of this book if you are planning a trip anywhere in the US this summer. Loads of ideas for enjoying local festivals all over the country and recipes as well. Get to know the locals, by tasting their tasty specialties!

Lots of detail, up to date for 2002.

A wealth of "hands on" activities, worksheets, & readings
Hands-On Archaeology Explore The Mysteries Of History Through Science by archaeologist and educator John White is specifically and effectively designed to be an archaeological manual for the classroom teacher in preparing and implementing a curriculum to teach students about various aspects of archaeological inquiry through a wealth of "hands on" activities, worksheets, readings, and examples. Every facet of the science of archaeology is covered from the formulation of a working hypothesis , to the keeping of field notes and records, to creating a museum display. The fascinating consequence of John White's highly recommended Hands-On Archaeology is that the students will not only learn about the science of archaeology, but in the process they will become functioning archaeologists themselves!

What a great learning tool to use in your classroom!
I have found that my students just love this area of learning. When they hear the word Archaeology they perk right up. This text is a great tool for their introduction to this seldom taught field. A must for any elementary or junior high teacher.

Absolutely fabulous!
I am so bummed that this book is out of print. I read it in the summer of 1995, while houseboating at Lake Powell. Even though I'm not a kayaker, I love being out on the water, and this book really made me want to take up kayaking. The pictures are fabulous, the stories are wonderful! I especially remember the stories about kayaking with the ships off the coast of California, and with the orcas in Alaska. If this book ever comes back into print, I want a copy of it. In the meantime, I guess I'll just keep watching the used book stores!

This is a beautiful book.
The author has experienced many paddling adventures all over the West Coast of North America and down into Mexico. A fantastic photographer, Rogers jams this book full of beautiful and inspiring photographs along with interesting narrative. From the pounding surf off the Washington coast to warm, quiet lagoons in the Baja, Rogers takes you along for quite a trip.

Incomparable Scenery: Comparative Views in the White Mountains

Simply Beautiful
These paintings truly capture the beauty of the White Mountains and "Incomparable Scenery" does an amazing job of presenting these works. The quality of the images of paintings is excellent. I love being able to compare different artists' rendering of similar scenes/views/ranges. Highly recommend for those interested in New England scenery.

A must for White Mountian Art Enthusiasts
This book of 25 paintings from the 19th century of New Hampshire's White Mountains is unique in how it compares two or more paintings of the same exact scene by different artists side by side. It shows all the popular NH scenery "icons" in well reproduced color. Also includes a very nice biography of the artists complemented by rare photographs of the artists themselves. It includes prominent as well as lesser known artists of the period. This is a must have book for anyone interested in White Mountain Art, White Mountain scenery, or the Hudson River School artists. Very well done, and great images!!

We Need More Northern Whitetail Books
As a northern deer hunter I am delighted with this book. Most of the whitetail deer books out there (at least the managment ones) are based in the south. Ozaga's book rings home with this Michigan guy.
The book is packed with great info on northern deer behavior. The photos are good and the research is sound. I wish there were more out there like it. So far, next to Alsheimer's deer books this is my favorite. I also just found a great northern food plot and habitat book called "Grow 'Em Right" by Dougherty and Dougherty which is right on the money up here in cold country.

An Excellent Choice For Any Deer Hunter
It is not often that one encounters a book that answers long standing questions, especially those that arise from the contradictions found in the popular deer hunting press. There is nothing Gee Whiz about Mr. Ozoga, he tells it like he sees it. When he doesn't know he tells you that too. This book is based on 30 years observation and experimentation on white tails at the Cusino Wildlife Research Station and dispels many of the myths and folklore regarding deer.

Be aware, however, that this book is not easy reading, but seems to be based on the discussion and conclusion sections of his research papers. It is approachable and yields to the diligent reader. It is well worth the effort and the price.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Barton's review.

John Ozoga Whitetail Intrigue
I have been studying and hunting Whitetail deer for over 30 years and this book actually contains useful information. Too many times books of this sort are centered on some gimmick to kill the big one. This is not the case with Ozoga's work, you will come away with a deeper understanding of the deer's habits, social order and habitat requirements. Especially for the northern deer herd. For anyone who has an interest in Whitetails this is a must read.

Enlightening, Thrilling, and non-stop!
Outdoor adventure lover or not, this book is hard to put down. Suspenseful narratives are blended with the thoughts and feelings of individuals as they face challenges that stare death in the face.

The Liquid Locomotive
What a phenomenal book. Essentially this is a collection of adventure packed true river stories. Some of the stories inspired me to pack my gear and leave for the river that day, while others put life, death, adventure, and risk in new perspective. If you love to paddle, dream about paddling, or just enjoy adventure, then buy this book. Some of the stories can be a bit overrun with technical river lingo, but even the novice (me) can get through it easily. I honestly had to start rationing out or limiting the number of pages I would read a night. It is a book I did not want to end.

Someone Who Understands "Parents in Pain"
As a parent who had experienced many of the pains addressed by Dr. White in this book, I felt grateful -- grateful that he had so simply and so eloquently described many of the emotions that my husband and I encountered several years ago. As a current graduate student in Counseling, I found this resource one which I would happily share with Christian parents who find themselves dealing with these issues. The book presents hope and practical advice that parents so desparately need. It serves to remind them of a principle that at the times is so easy to forget -- you can't live your child's life for them, and you aren't really helping by always rescuing them from the consequences of their actions. Finally, I appreciated Dr. White's gentle and non-critical use of scriptural references and applications. He accomplished his goal, at least with this reader, of reminding me that ours is a God who is able and very willing to help us when we are in pain and that the help He gives may not be that for which we prayed, but it will always be that which is indeed the best.

Great Resource for Parents who need Tough love encouragment
This is a growing group of people, who as parents find some of their children in such positions as they need to take those "Hosea/Gomer" steps in Hosea 2 of abandoning them until they hit bottom and realize "Gee, it was better with my first husband."

This is solid book with good advice to help such parents in such difficult scenarios have the reassurance they're not the only ones; have the encouragment to tough love it out, and also, neve give up on their kids or themselves as loving parents.

Have used this book professionally in counseling, and unfortunately, in my personal parenting as well. Excellent, blessed resource.

Interesting look at Camelot
Children might not be aware that the White House has been home to many "First Families" with children of their own and are sure to enjoy the images of Macaroni the Pony and other such antics.

It is also a good read for adults interested in the are. It captures Kennedy era culture. I had no idea they created those hideous plastic masks of JFK and Jackie! This volume is lushly illustrated with sidebars and smaller photographs as well.

I was sadden to realize that only Caroline remains of Camelot. The last few pages- the saddest birthday remind us of the tragedy our nation endured.

This is great for kids and adults alike!

A great look at the Kennedy White House -- for kids!
Some of the most moving images from the Kennedy family's time in the White House are included in this new book for kids. It's easy to understand, and older kids may even choose to read it themselves. And, oh yes, it's a great read for adults, too!

White Dynamite and Curly Kidd
This book is AWESOME. Written with an authentic voice of the rodeo cowboy, yet delightful lyrics, rhythm and a surprise ending will enchant all readers.

Exciting and surprising!!!
White Dynamite and Curly Kid is a book that is as much fun to read as it is to listen to! The story is terrific, full of action and suspense as Curly Kid watches cowboys ride a fearsome bull known as White Dynamite! The ending is a surprise to all, as the reader learns that things aren't always as they seem.Zinthia Halaychik, Astatula, Florida

Enter another reality
The wide variety of writing here examines the vast amount of literature about drugs with emphasis on drug users. It's a comprehensive anthology that permits the adventurous reader to experience the complete range of substances, from absinthe and ecstasy to yage and opium to moonshine, as narrated by some of the world's most imaginative writers. These include William Burroughs, Nelson Algren, Florence Nightingale, Jean Cocteau, Arthur Conan Doyle, Philip K. Dick, Miles Davis, Aldous Huxley, Charles Baudelaire, Terence McKenna, Lewis Carroll, Hunter S. Thompson, Paul Bowles, Arthur Rimbaud, Marie Corelli, Tom Wolfe, Timothy Leary, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Whether in ecstasy or hung over, addicted or recovering, the writers in White Rabbit examines the drug experience from every angle. Their always fascinating and often eloquent narratives provide a colorful read, amply rewarding the reader with its variety of experience. Some pieces are way too short, though, like Florence Nightingale's one little sentence, Paul Gauguin's two short paragraphs and Rimbaud's brief poem. Elizabeth Barrett Browning's little ode to opium is also quite skimpy. There are interesting biographies of all the authors, giving some background to the pieces here. This is a valuable work as it brings together so many interesting perspectives and writing styles. As the authors put it so well: "Drugs are inherently subversive, sometimes dangerous, occasionally great fun. They 'clear away the past and enhance the present,' they can inspire great art and greater experience, or they can unleash the monster lurking within."

A great anthology of the drug cultures best
A great anthology of stories, one of the most complete piles of drug culture writers around, giving one a brief look into a plethora of great writing that will lead to further investigation of their works by teasing them with this fine book. Packed with writers from all over the spectrum and many genres, old and new alike. A Must have for those deeply in love with the drug culture. This book gives the reader a taste of many great writers out there, all with mounds of their own material that needs to be read, this book can prove as a lead in to these readings and makes for an excellent leisurely taste of what is out there for those who desire it.
