Detecting From the Stones
The author is a Professor of Astronomy who chose to investigate Stonehenge. He concluded that Stonehenge was a sophisticated astronomical observatory designed to predict eclipses. The positioning of the stones provides a wealth of information, as does the choice of the site itself. If you can see the alignment, general relationship, and the use of these stones then you will know the reason for the construction. The author, and other astronomers, discovered the 56-year cycle of eclipses by decoding Stonehenge!

Stonehenge was constructed from about 1900BC to 1600BC. Appendix B tells how the movement of stones once each year from an initial fixed position will predict accurately every important lunar event for hundreds of years. This computer would need resetting about once every 300 years by advancing the stones by one space. Mankind generally used the cycle of the moon as a unit of timekeeping.

The most significant Stonehenge positions line up to point to some unique sun of moon position (Figure 12). Chapter 7 tell how they used an IBM 704 computer in 1961 to plot the Stonehenge positions (120 pairs of points) and calculated where the lines would hit the sky (p.105). Chapter 9 asks if the Aubrey holes can be proved to have been used as a computer? No, but it is the most reasonable solution proposed so far.

This entertaining and educational book tells about the author's investigations and conclusions. It is a classic science book for the general reader.

As usual the brilliance is found in the simplicity....
Put away all your wild theories and the inept investigations of amateurs. Hawkins has put the record straight for anyone bold enough to keep an open mind. The case is closed, the mystery of Stonehenge has indeed been decoded.

OF COURSE! Stonehenge Decoded made the pieces fit!
Where have I been, that I did not know this?
I have been to Stonehenge; the highlight of my
2 weeks in England, bought a good little book
as a momento; sat and stared at my photos, and
listened intently as documentaries described
it as an alien landing site, etc.
I'd go "hmm...aligns with the sun...
constructed by aliens...prehistory people
couldn't do that...magically formed by
Druids...hmmmmm." But never gave it serious
thought. It seemed too beyond analyzing; then
I saw this book.
"Stonehenge Decoded" from page one, gave
insight to my sleeping brain.I became totally
absorbed in the concepts revealed by
G. Hawkins. So simple, yet so profoundly
accurate. So meticulous were these early
peoples. I have a new respect and thirst for
how they lived that I didn't have before. It
took an astronomer to recognize what, to our ancestors, were so obvious. OF COURSE!!

I now seek out any book with info on Circle
Stones; some by Gerald Hawkins. History is
TIME travel to its fullest!! Here I go....back
to the future.

A little bit of all the important stuff!
I first borrowed this book from the library by title only in an on-line search. What a surprise! The authors have distilled a lot of important ideas and facts into simple sections, with pointers & critiques along the way. A veritible small wealth of information. While a pro might find this all rather second nature, an amateur will definitely find something of value in here, and a beginner will find the whole book very valuable.

Black & White Landscape Photography
This slim volume is a comprehensive guide packed with necessary information on black and white and landscape photography. The introduction to the book states, ". . . when photographing landscapes, you are at the mercy of these elements--quickly changing weather, changing and uneven illumination, poor contrast or limited tonal range, undesirable yet unchangeable foregrounds or backgrounds, and extraneous objects in the scene which may significantly detract from your composition." The challenge of creating a dynamic black and white landscape almost makes a photographer want to quit before beginning. Yet, with the help of this book, obtaining a spectacular black and white landscape seems to be within the realm of possibility. I like the book most because there is great detail in clear and understandable terms. Along with the text are more than seventy interpretive examples of black and white landscape photographs. The first section of the book discusses "The Artist's Tools." Everything from camera format to film and tripods are thoroughly addressed, including the benefits or drawbacks of various choices, prices and recommended accessories. Section two defines the art of landscape photography. Some questions answered are, "What is art?" "What makes a good landscape photograph?" and "Why black and White?" I found section 3 to be the most informative. Visual elements are explained in detail. Among some of the aspects covered are framing, vision, viewpoint, tonality and design. "Field Techniques" are explained in section four. The sometimes confusing effects of different colored filters on black and white images are explained with the help of charts and photographic examples. A condensed, but comprehensive explanation of the Zone System ends this section. The quotation, "The darkroom . . . allows you to create an image that exactly matches your artistic conception" introduces section five. This chapter takes us into the darkroom and beyond. Section six explains "Putting it all together," and section seven gives examples of field exposure, darkroom printing and Zone System field exposure records so we can repeat the perfect image every time. A list of recommended books for further reading is supplied as is a list of Internet resources. I found this book so helpful and comprehensive, I carry it with me into the field and find myself referring to it often. A definite five star addition to your library.

Excellent for learning how to compose or critique photos
I highly recommend this book to anybody interested in learning more about composing or critiquing photographs.

Should be required reading for every high school student
When I first read Susan's book ,many years ago, I wondered how she managed to write a book exposing every raw nerve in her body. But I know why...she saw a chance to shine light on the very complex problem of teen suicide and to help people prevent and understand this tragedy. As far as I am concerned every young person and parent should read this book...it is well written and deals with this problem in a very human and honest way. The lady shows great courage in letting the world see her pain so maybe insight can be gained.

Sensitive and personal: a must read!
Susan's book about her son's suicide is a must read for all parents. It is heart breaking, but in her intensely personal story, she reaches out to help others understand what so many of us do not know. What you find out reading this book could save your child from possible self destruction. As a mother of three sons, I have read this book several times, and learn something about this courageous woman and her family each time. The untimely death of her son touched me deeply, and I feel some of her pain. As I said, it is a must read for parents, and I am pleased to see it available again.

Walking Out of Spiritual Abuse
Published in Paperback by Renew Books (1997)
Authors: Marc DuPont and John White
Amazon base price: $12.99
Average review score:

Fantastically Written
Marc Dupont has written a very timely and vital book for the Christian church. In the age of increasing situations of spiritual abuse it is vital that somebody like him to write a book on this topic.

This book was required reading in a pastoral leadership school I was in. The issues of abuse, control, manipulation and rebellion are the key themes to this wonderful book. I found this book to be a real eye opener to my own ways of relating to people. After reading this book, people will understand how easy it really is to slip into spiritual abuse and that not all spiritually abusive people are evil to the core. They are just deeply wounded people who have mastered survival skills that hurt others.

Whether or not you have ever been in a spirituall abusive church, you owe it to yourself to read this book. This book will enable you to discern an abusive or "toxic" church and how to identify them. We don't even realize that we can be manipulating and controlling others and that's another reason why this book should be read by all Christians. This is need to know information.

This book has gained a very special place in my library. Among my collection of 200 or so other Christian books, this is in the top 5 hands down.

Highly recommend
This book can help you discern whether or not you are in a spiritually abusive situation, to what degree, why and how to get out. It can be used by God to cleanse out the wounds, forgive and begin the process of healing...and to not repeat the same mistakes.

I wasn't crazy!!
This was a wonderful book. My husband and I were highly encouraged to read this book by friends as well as elders of another church we went to for help. We had thought we were going crazy. We couldn't believe that our pastor and friend as well as other leaders in our church were lying to us, manipulating us, and teaching us scripture out of context to control us. They would continually use the scriptures refering to 'obey and submit to your leaders', as well as other scriptures manipulating people for money and justifying their own lack of integrity. This book clearly stated the facts and as we read through it, helped us process what was happening to us, and what surely was to come as we began to walk out of that abusive situation. It seemed that every time the Lord directed me to read the next part, it was exactly what was needed at that time. This book has helped over 100 people I know personally to walk out of an abusive church situation. The Lord is faithful, and He will lead your steps. This is a must read for anyone attending church today, especially in the charismatic, non-denominationally affiliated church. Pastors and leaders need to read this as well so that they can minister to those who have been wounded, and so that they can avoid falling into traps and mindsets that they, too, should be treating their congregations in abusive ways.

A Life-Changing Book
This is, without question, the best book on prayer I have ever read. It has dramatically altered the way I pray, both in terms of what things I pray about, and what I expect from God during the exchange. John White is a masterful writer who does not shy away from pointing out what our personal weaknesses might be in our prayer lives. He speaks truth boldy. While reading this book I often felt convicted and saw the need for a transformation of how I pray. Daring to Draw Near will show how our prayers should be more God-centered than they probably are, and that they should be more focused on prayers for "our people" and our community. We are challenged to be honest in our prayers about who God really is and about who we are and what we think. If you read this book, your prayer life (and the rest of your life) will never be the same.

A fresh look at prayer
Much of the current attitude about prayer left me confused and discouraged, leading me to believe that prayer changes God and that I simply need to "pray harder" if I'm struggling. Mr. White's book, however, by looking at prayers recorded in the Bible, reaffirmed that our prayers are an important response to an unchanging God. Rather than taking a flippant view of the struggles behind some of these great prayers, he addressed them honestly and in context with other Scripture. Of course, it is good to have a clear understanding of prayer, but this book has played a role in my walk which has been even more important: it has encouraged me to pray more and more.

A peek into the backstage of a prophet's life
Pain, trial and persecution are normal process encountered while growing in the prophetic. Times twice of that defines the preparation process one needs to go through when one grows in the office of a prophet.

John Sanford is definitely a season prophet. However he has not graduated from the School of the Holy Spirit. It takes patience to learn all of God's ways. In "Elijah Task", John described how he and his wife has to go through some of the most severe testing while being trained to be a prophet. When you recognized your calling as a prophet, cutting corners is never the chosen path. From John's experience, prophets are at the peak of their training during the trough of their lives. In other words, the making of a prophet's ministry usually take place in the darkest moment of his life. The end result God desires is humility and brokenness. Only then He can use His prophets to complete His divine task.

Today John Sanford's ministry has proven to be a great contribution to the Body of Christ in the area of counseling and healing. This book is an expression of his priceless experience. I believe the insightful teachings provided here are very essential materials to emerging prophets of our time. John has made us aware that operating in the prophetic realm can be a dangerous playground. He made it plain to us that it takes integrity and wisdom when prophets handle their gifting.

In one of the chapter, John also mentioned that God occasionally allow His prophets to miss the mark. This is necessary in order to deflate any form of pride that may arise in the ministry.

This book is a must if you are serious about letting God to shape your life as a prophet or a prophetic person.

For Christians seeking to hear the voice of God clearly...
This book is aimed at those who feel that God has called them to hear his voice, to walk with a prophetic annointing. The Bible encourages us to "eagerly desire the gift of prophesy", and anyone who has experienced or heard testimony of the power of this spiritual gift -- to make God real to people in this world and to address the underlying spiritual realities of the world through the ministry of prayer -- should make this book a number one priority.

John Sandford writes not from an academic view, but from the point of view of someone who has clearly been called to a prophetic ministry. The message of the book is that clarity costs, and the process of reaching it is often messy. But, oh, the blessings it releases!

Far from the Hollywood personification of Biblical prophets as heroic figures, Sandford lifts up a corner of Christian life to uncover a reality that is very quiet, very real, and very necessary for our times.

If you're a Christian and you've received revelation -- visions, dreams, and words of knowledge and wisdom -- that leave you confused but hungering for more of the reality of God's voice, this book will do a lot for you.

The Elijah task is also recommended for pastors seeing to understand and incorporate the gift of prophesy into your local church.

Nurture your prophets gently, it's a hard walk but, ultimately, one that will be a blessing to many.

So funny you'll howl
I laughed out loud or got misty-eyed (sometimes simultaneously) at the photos and captions in this book. The photographer has captured the essence of doggy expression. One of my favorites (and there are many) is the tilted head and "I'm listening" look of the dog for whom it is wished, "May you always understand what is being said to you." This book is a lovely gift for yourself or any dog people you know.

This book barks up the right tree
I have seen this book and being a dog lover, I really enjoyed it. Some of the captions for the pictures made me laugh out loud. I saw an interview with the authors and the said that The dog we call an Irish Setter her in the US, is called a Red Setter in Ireland. The Pictures are great and the captions are even better.

Delivers what it promises.
Since you can read the introduction in the "Look Inside" section, I won't say much about it except that Necromancer Games is going for an old style dungeon romp with monsters, puzzles and traps (including instant kill ones - ie, if you don't escape the trap, you're dead.. no save attempts). The graphics on the cover are quite nice and the black and white drawings inside are very well done. There's good use of white space in the text, making it easy enough to read. The maps however are below average. They're small, with no grids or size scale and hard to read. These problems are fixed if you log onto their site and download new maps, however this shouldn't have been a problem in a module that's otherwise of high quality. In addition, you can download more information about the wilderness and a special extra encounter that harkens back to a 'classic' (supposedly) module encounter from 1st Edition rules. This special encounter is now downloadable without having to dig up the codeword, since it's right on the site, and looks to be a fun addition.

Before I go on, realize that I've only read, not DMed or played this adventure. This is part 1 of a 3 part dungeon and includes the upper levels. The nice thing about the dungeon is that it does not get incrementally harder as you move down it. The players had better realize that sometimes it's better to run, since not all the encounters are tailored with an eye towards the probable strength of the party. You can also travel between many levels, even skipping many in between, using certain routes. No "one way to the previous level and one way to the next level" deals here. This feels a lot more realistic (in spite of the claims by the authors that they want to go back to the good old days of illogical dungeons - I'm firmly convinced this was meant tongue in cheek as there is at least a nod towards logic in it). Of course, this only works if you have all three modules. There are some fiendish traps and strong monsters, but puzzles are lacking.

One complaint I have is that the shaded text that's meant to be read to the players sometimes assumes you've gone through the dungeon a certain way and seen something referred to in the text (usually minor, like saying something along the lines of "The rubble in this room isn't quite as broken as that in both of the others." when the players may have only moved through one room on the way in). Also the shaded text sometimes assigns feelings to the PCs, a no no in my book. These complaints along with the maps prevent me from giving it a 5 star rating, but if you want a decently priced, hack and slash dungeon crawl in the old style, this looks to be one of the better choices.

Good d20 Dungeon Crawl with other Possibilities
Having picked up a couple of the other products by Necromancer Games/Sword and Sorcery Studios, I decided after glancing through Rappan Athuk that this had possibilities as well. First off, let me say that the only disappointing thing about this product is the long wait between part 2, where more info on the lost Temple of Orcus will be presented. This is a good, basic dungeon crawl with several tough encounters. There are enough hooks available so that it can be dropped into any campaign that you are running. Plus, there is plenty of room for a creative DM to add to the dungeon or make it a part of his or her campaign. The toughest creatures that the party will encounter is this module are the Skeletal Warrior (who is a Blackguard), Purple Worms and the Spectral Lich, who resides on a level that the PC's will have to work hard to get to. The treasures are commensurate with the encounters, so the PC's will be happy. Overall, the product is great, it is presented well and easy to follow.

Put this in your bag of tricks.
This module is advertised as the intro to a series of modules that are pure dungeon crawl (Long on Hack 'n Slash and Traps, short on roleplaying), but each of the levels in this dungeon can easily be adapted by a DM to be a standalone adventure. As such, this module will work for DMs who want a long running dungeon crawl, or DMs who just want a bunch (up to 5) of drop in 1 night adventures. Anyone looking to make money at publishing modules should look at this as a good example. This presumes next to nothing about the campaign, and so you can fit it where you need it in your campaign rather than making your campaign fit the module.
