Inside Lincoln's White House: The Complete Civil War Diary of John Hay

Unique insights.
Hay, the young Assistant Presidential Secretary, was like a son to Lincoln. The President, in the diary often affectionately and irreverently referred to as "The Tycoon", relaxed around Hay as around few others, giving the diarist an insight into the character of Lincoln which is almost unique. This alone would make the book worthwhile, but Hay's views on other personalities and events of those dramatic days are also valuable, and engagingly written.
Hay's diary has been published before, but incomplete and poorly edited. This is the first complete edition, with all the entries restored and with extensive explanatory notes, which are necesary to follow Hay's refernces to obscure persons and events.
Essential for the Lincoln scholar and highly recommended for anyone's Civil War shelf.

Totally sold out for our Lord and Savior
This is the story of two people that God had His hand upon and the way He directed their lives. The young lady was raised in a missionary family in China and due to illness found herself back in the states. She recovered and continued her education with the goal of returning to China with China Inland Mission. She met her future husband at Moody Bible Institute but though they had fell in love they would not marry. She knew God had called her back to China but he was unsure of the call that God had for him. Both were well educated and very gifted and worked hard to prepare for the place of service God was leading them to. As it turned out God did allow them to end up in the same mission field and they did marry and ministered together. They had a child and all looked to be going well. The chinese communists had other ideas. Both John and Betty were beheaded for their faith. The child was spared. A great number of souls came to know the Lord because of the faith of the and obedience of this young couple. I found myself lost in the story as the author did a wonderful job of detail. An awesome book must read!

A delightful memoir
This is a delightful book--an intelligent and engaging memoir of a long friendship between one of America's most popular writers and a self-effacing Californian who spent a part of his life as an academic, another part as a small-town newspaper editor, yet another part as a state bureaucrat, but who in the end was remembered more for his relationship to the author of The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and East of Eden. When Steinbeck died in 1968, Sheffield confessed that the writer was "the best friend I ever had." If Sheffield was not the best friend Steinbeck ever had, he was an important influence on him--first as a classmate and roommate at Stanford, later as best man at Steinbeck's marriage to his first wife, and for years after as a drinking companion and literary sounding board. As Steinbeck climbed the ladder of literary immortality, Sheffield saved his letters, collected reviews of his work, and assembled important facts of his life. The result is this book--not a biography, by any means, but a rich and engrossing recollection of an immensely gifted writer at work and play, in good times and bad. It is unfortunate that the book is so badly edited (the published text is rife with typos, some almost unreadable sentences, and even some misnumbered endnotes). But none of this is Dook Sheffield's fault (he died in 1989), and, in the end, his love and respect for Steinbeck conquers all these petty obstacles.

What a hero!
Gervaise's father wishes that his son will grow up to be a Knight of the White Cross, and so Gervaise leaves his dying mother and travels to Rhodes. When he arrives at Rhodes he never dreams of all the adventures he will be undertaking, and the excitement he will be involved in. First comes the rescuing of Ricord and Santoval, after which the Grand Prior knights Gervaise and his comrade, Ralph, which is a great privilege for the boys. Some time later, after visiting the house of Signor Vsados, Gervaise mentions to Ralph that he did not like the looks of the Greek who had also been at the Vsados household. Ralph laughs at him, but Gervaise's suspicions are aroused even more when he sees the man talking to a slave of the Order. After reporting to Sir John Kendall Gervaise suggests he disguise himself and go among the slaves, to try to find out if a plot is being arranged. What will he find? Gervaise has many more adventures, and also a little romance, for Claudia De Forli bestows her colours on him. Gervaise also sets an example by the boy-galley that he was put in command of. It is the only galley ever to have only young knights appointed to it. In the end Gervaise takes part in the Siege of Rhodes, which was a bloody affair. Don't miss reading this story of a gallant Knight of the White Cross!

The Light Bringer
Humankind has moved from the age of Pisces into the age of Aquarius, the age of Intuition. This is a pivotal point, for no longer are we reading about what will happen one day in the future. Quite clearly, the age of Aquarius is here and with it has come a speeding up of evolution: "the whole world is going through an initiation--a raising and an expansion of
consciousness...the very substance of the earth and the physical body is changing."

While the age of Pisces, heralded by Jesus, brought a stirring of the soul and the emotions, the Aquarian age, heralded by John, the Divine, brings the development of the higher spiritual body, the intuitional body. In order to develop this sixth sense, we must first discover the emotions and then learn to control them. The age of Aquarius is the age when "brotherhood between all things and all people" is established and brings into prominence the "woman aspect of life...peace-loving, beauty, harmony, perfection." This is the second coming. The church of the new age is the church of the living, loving Christ."

If there is any doubt about the relationship between Jesus and John, the Light Bringer clearly enlightens: "Jesus and John represent one ray, one lifestream, one aspect of divine life...they are all but inseparable, two aspects of one truth."
White Eagle firmly reminds us of the unique relationship between Jesus and John, the dual souls, who "showed forth the mystical marriage between the feminine soul and the male spirit, the perfect union."

Like Jesus, John did not die. Jesus clearly came to prepare humanity for the Aquarian age by representing the human and the divine, for "the great thing in this new age is going to be the parallel development of both human and divine nature.
Jesus came to teach humanity how to live a life of brotherhood and love; John comes to help us live it, for "when illumination comes there is only one way in which it is possible to live, and that is by spontaneous love, kindness, gentleness...to all creation." John is the Light Bringer.

So far, White Eagle tells us, we have been trying to escape life by "creating distractions, amusements, dissipating the energies of the life-force." Our social problems are caused by failing to love. Until we feel with our companions we cannot become master souls. We must recognize our shortcomings and learn to overcome intolerance

As we move further into this new age, we shall witness changes, "unexpected happenings, miracles...a revolution of thoughts," as "outworn creeds and dogmas crumble away."
The seventh ray, the ray of John is also the ray of beauty. Cities will be beautified by the light of the spirit, people will create "poems of beauty in stone." Music will "raise the vibration sof the earth" and beautiful speech will be used to "build up constructive good." Children will be educated to unfold their intuition, "stimulated by vibrations of beauty, of colour and art and form."

The Light Bringer motivates us to action NOW. The book invites us to test our intuition. Religious epigraphs heading each chapter give inspirational seeds for thought. White Eagle urges us to read again the Book of Revelation of St.John, to "respond to the light in your own heart and see the vision glorious for yourselves."

The Light Bringer is a rich, exciting book to share with family and friends. Its powerful message is one for all to read today, as humanity reaches a "dangerous stage" in its evolution. No longer are the spiritual secrets being kept by initiates and sages of the mystery schools, for the whole world is going through an initiation. As humanity progresses on the spiritual path, bringing forth "the knowledge which is within," it becomes even more imperative to learn discernment.

The Light Bringer: a book for today's generation.
