Outstanding Holistic Look at Alaska's Inside Passage
In this highly readable book, Rita O'Clair and her co-authors explore the geology, habitats, and animals of Southeast Alaska and how they interact with each other. I haven't found any other source that puts the basic story of the region together in this way. For those getting started learning about the area, this book provides a framework to organize future observations and learning. Those who already know some natural history of the area may be surprised by the connections this book helps make and the gaps it fills in.

An intense poet looks into the mirror and doesn't flinch
Cliched reviewers say, "you can't put this book down." In the case of poet Richard Hugo's autobiography, I found I needed to put it down occasionally. The book is so intense, so brutally truthful, that the reader has to take a break and walk away from it periodically, just a prize-fighter needs that break between rounds. Growing up on West Marginal Way with his grandparents in Seattle, going through his tour as a bombardier, his early life and eventual emergence as one of the top nation's best poets - and certainly one of the top poetry teachers - Hugo spares neither himself nor the reader. Although modern-day Americans are accustomed to seeing blood and gore on the TV screen, few are prepared for the concussive effects of Hugo's unflinching reminiscences. When the book finally is put down at the end, it stays with the reader, as does an admiration for the extreme courage Hugo took in putting all this down on paper.

Used for Hiking and Backyard Oahu Research!
I'm no vulcanologist! But the information in this book is as detailed as the lay person is comfortable with. Excellent, extremely informative, I learned a lot about Hawaii's geology through this book. As an avid hiker and the webmaster for Backyard Oahu, I frequented its pages to help me understand and explain some of Oahu's geography and specific trail geology. It is, however, limited to the "roadside" - so it doesn't go into great depth as would pertain to someone hiking far into the mountains. But, the overall information is detailed enough to provide an adequate understanding of how the island(s) were formed and why they look the way they do today! Backyard Oahu highly recommends this book!

Took me by surprise....
Unlike Richard Matheson's other novels of frontier fiction (Journal of the Gun Years, The Gunfight), Shadow on the Sun is a horror novel set in the Old West. The book begins with an Indian agent negotiating peace between Apaches and the U.S. Government, before introducing a supernatural creature out of Indian legend bent upon survival whatever the cost. As a result, I got two stories for the price of one. Like The Gunfight, the author first creates an atmosphere full of hope and future promise, then chapter by chapter, slowly lowers that future into a lake of quicksand. The contrast between the main characters--the Indian agent and the Washington D.C. bureaucrat--are excellently drawn, but it is the growth of the bureaucrat--from skeptical adversary to heroic friend--that is the heart of the novel. Despite the suspenseful build up, the climax of the story seemed rushed with an ending more fitting to a short story than a novel. Nevertheless, Richard Matheson delivers another entertaining novel.

Works on all levels
What motivated me to hear (Audio Partners) was the presence of Judi Dench and Timothy West in "performances from 33 plays," as the cover states. I have long admired Mr. West ever since an old Masterpiece Theater portrayal of Edward VII and many appearances on other British TV imports. Of Ms. Dench, little has to be said--she is the supreme actress.

I really doubted if the contents of these two cassettes or CDs with a running time of only 2.5 hours could do justice to either Shakespeare's life or work; and of course it does not. What it does accomplish works on two levels. For both beginner and Ph.D. holder, there are the readings of the two stars. Granted, each selection is very short indeed, sometimes only two or three lines. But what a joy it is to hear Mr. West take on so many roles with so many voices from the young Coriolanus to the ancient Lear. And Dame Judi's enunciation should be a lesson to all actresses who are taught to mumble and whisper by recent directors who wish to keep the dialogue a secret from the audience.

There is little new for the advanced English major in the portions that are narrated by the authors, Richard Hampton and David Weston, both of whom are actors and directors with the Royal Shakespeare Company. At best, their script is a miracle of concision, telescoping both the life and works into a cohesive narrative that must leave out so much of the life to leave time for the works. Yes, every one of the plays (except "Two Noble Kinsmen") is treated with varying degrees of brevity; and a listener totally unfamiliar with any (or all) of them can get a decent idea of what the play is about both in plot and theme. Those thoroughly familiar with the plays might smile at some of the simplifications required to carry off this recording (is Iago really the most evil villain in the plays?) while still admiring how the writers got right down to the essential points without too much editorializing.

All in all, I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in our language's greatest poet or in the art of reading his lines. Thank you, Audio Partners.

SONOMA THE ULTIMATE WINERY GUIDE
As a winery employee, I would recommend this book to both serious and novice winery visitors. This book is loaded with beautiful glossy photographs and detailed information on each winery, organized by region. It focuses on wineries only, with brief referals to nearby food and farms of interest. Each winery has it's own page, with a helpful quick reference in the left margin of the necessary details on hours, fees, directions, wines etc. This is a plus when you have limited time, and don't want to spend half your day searching through a guidebook. There is also a section that classifies the wineries by specific features that may help narrow down your selection when touring. The winemaking calendar and grape glossary would be especially useful to first timers. The size makes it slightly awkward to carry around, but the photos will make a wonderful momento when you return home!

Tales of the American West

Amazon base price: $20.95

Wheeler knows Western fiction
Richard Wheeler, author of some of the best historical novels of the Old American West ever written, has gathered here stories from many of his fellow Spur Award writers--Loren Estleman, Richard C. House, Glendon Swarthout, Elmer Kelton, Richard Matheson, Jeanne Williams, Sandra Whiting, among them--and fashioned a superb anthology of the modern Western. Nobody knows the craft of Western fiction better than Wheeler and his introduction to this excellent collection is a masterpiece in itself.
