Title Our Wild Indians 33 Years Personal Experience Among Red Men of the Great West
Published in Hardcover by Corner House Pub (1978)
Author: Richard Dodge

Splendid Work
Richard Irving Dodge was the epitome of the American gentleman upon the voyage of the Great Plains which he so deeply loved for it's liberty and infinite hunting.
The Colonel was well respected by both his superiors and the locals who he dealt with.
In this book, he reveals wonderful insights to both the culture, brutality and dealings with the plains Indians through fact, interaction and experience.
The Indian is dealt with as he should be with truthfulness.
While due to the higher standards of the day, the more graphic details of what Indians did in torturing captives is refered to as "outrages". Dodge does credit in his honesty.

very informative, i have the book published in1883
the versiion i own was published in 1883,, I have read this book several times and am now reading it to my grandchildren

A thoughtful, meaningful commentary on American Indians
Colonel Richard Dodge's fascinating and probing work on American Indians, their habits, customs, and history, with a deeply moving final chapter on the "outlook" for the Indians - all written by a man who experienced life with the Indians, firsthand, during the days of the Santa Fe Trail. Interesting. Very educational.

Full Access
The ACCESS guides are so smartly organized by neighborhoods that you'll be lurking like a local in no time. The color coding for attractions, restaurants, hotels and shopping make skimming for your favorites a breeze. More often than not, their sly 'insider' comments are right on the money. I used ACCESS Washington, DC to acclimate myself to my new home, and I still use it whenever company comes to town. Like any travel guide, the latest edition is a must (but even that won't compensate for fickle diners and undercapitalized restauranteurs) and it's certainly time for a newer version than the 2000 edition. But having said that, I still purchase an ACCESS guide if I'm going to spend any time in a city I haven't fully explored.

Time tested style, another classic by Wurman.
Once again a jewel of a guide. Comprehensive, lively, logical and coherent. Like so many other city guides by Richard Saul Wurman, this book combines an architectural overview with historical, anecdotal and practical aspects of the city in such a way that makes it a great companion to have before during and after the visit. As a matter of fact even if you don't go, you get the pleasure of intimate knowledge of the place.

Great Road Book!
There is so much to like about this book-the engaging voice of the author, the tidbits of history woven into the narrative, the unusual (quirky) characters Mr. Higgs worked with and met on his journey (not to mention his bizarre wife). Richard Higgs is a unique and fascinating storyteller--curious, introspective, intelligent, poetic--not to mention his high sense of irony. This book is a pleasure and a treasure.

A journey from a diner in Tulsa to the wheat harvests.
A wonderful book about the journey from a diner in Tulsa to the wheat harvests in the heartland. This book is the author's first published effort and is worth buying, buy it in hardback it is a better deal. Let me know if you want to get it.

Cowboys and ranchers in their own words
This enjoyable book was put together by Darrell Arnold, publisher and editor of Cowboy Magazine. There are 170 quotes on over a dozen different subjects by cowboys and ranchers interviewed by Arnold during 1975-1996, and the book includes more than 120 black-and-white photographs of these men, their families, their horses and gear, and the landscapes that they work in. Topics range across a variety of aspects of cowboy lifestyle as it's lived on ranches throughout the western states from New Mexico to Montana. Among the many working cowboys Arnold interviews are even a few celebrities: Ben Johnson, Wiford Brimley, Rex Allen, Charlie Daniels, and Baxter Black. A short introduction was written by cowboy stuntman and Academy Award winning actor Richard Farnsworth.

Most informative for me were the sections on the differing traditions of Texas-style cowboys, who range across the Southwest and eastern slopes of the Rockies, and California-style buckaroos, who work the Great Basin of Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada. The details of cowboy gear are also presented well, with accompanying photographs and interviews with saddlemakers. A glossary at the back of the book defines a lot of these terms: hackamore, jinglebobs, mecate, snaffle bits. It also includes cowboy terminology, which often shows up in the interviews: roping cattle, drag the calves, pull a wagon.

A great pleasure is reading the words of cowboys themselves, as they express their various opinions, relate their memories of adventures, and talk about horses. What comes across over and again is a love of this way of life, despite the fact that looking after cattle on horseback is hard physical labor and pays little. You understand their pride, their sense of self-reliance and the importance of being recognized by others as "the man for the job." I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the West, cowboys, and ranching. A good companion volume (out of print) is "Buckaroos in Paradise" by Howard Marshall.

Terrific Work -- Great Photos -- Wonderful Insight

Having spent the better part of my childhood on the back of a horse pretending to be a 'real cowgirl,' I found myself all wrapped up in memories while reading this fresh look at the life of modern-day cowboys.

The author, a true cowboy himself, traveled all over the south and west photographing working ranches and the people who own/work them. The author must have spent a good deal of time interviewing his subjects, because the book offers up some great stories/quotes, too.

The book is broken down into interesting chapters such as: THE COWBOY LIFESTYLE - RANCHING COUNTRY - GETTING IT DONE -- FAMILY LIFE - RANCH HORSES (my particular favorite) - DEFINING THE COWBOY - RANCHING TRADITIONS.

Some of my favorite quotes: On Ranch Horses: "If a horse ain't plum lame when you get done nailing the shoes on, you've done all right."

"There is something about a horse. They are a lot prettier animal than a man is, but not quite as pretty as a woman. They are beautiful animals. I was raising horses when I was raising my children. I raised them together. I credit that relationship with the fact that not one of my children has ever been involved in with drugs." (Rex Allen)

Or, the one in Family Life: "I'm Dusty, my wife is Sandy, my boy is Rocky, and my dauther's name is Wendy. Our names describe this ranch perfectly." (Dusty Ray)

I'm keeping this book on my coffee table for easy access. When I'm feeling penned up, I'll open it up, look at the wonderful photos, read the quotes and dream of life under the big sky of Montana or the scrub bushes of New Mexico.

Enjoy!

Hill Country....yearly editing
I truly enjoyed the book and wish I had bought it earlier as I visit Fredericksburg, San Antonio, Boerne, etc. every year doing family research. The shopping in Fredericksburg is superb but changes so quickly that a book would need to be updated every year to keep up with the changes! BUT, as a book of this type is bought more often for the historical, cultural and natural beauties of the region, shopping is generally not the most important aspect of the trip. I have been to and through many of the places listed in Llano, Gillespie, Kendall, and Blanco Counties but this is a much more interesting way of doing the trip. I recommend this to anyone who wishes to see the small towns and historical sites of the region.

This book covers every little town of the Texas Hill Country
If you enjoy driving through the Texas Hill Country, this book has plenty of roads mapped out, starting from Austin, Fredericksburg, and San Antonio. Every scalping, shoot-out, ghost town, abandoned schoolhouse and old church along the way is described with its own history. If you're looking for Oatmeal, TX or Nameless, TX, or just the best bbq out there, this is your book.

For scholarship or novelists seeking accuracy
Richard Patterson's Historical Atlas Of The Outlaw West offers the western history buff a state-by-sate, town-by-town guide to the outlaws, gunmen, and desperadoes of the Old West. The lively, informal narratives of hold-ups and gunfights are illustrated by historical photography. Facsimile 19th-century maps show the land the way it was during this era, while road directions to ghost towns, hideouts, and hold-up sites are provided (when ever possible) making the Historical Atlas Of The Outlaw West a useful travel guide as well. Of special value is the system of cross-references, useful for following the careers of outlaws and lawmen across the state boundaries. Whether as an historical reference for scholarship or novelists seeking accuracy, or just for the fun of the stories themselves for the western fan, Historical Atlas Of The Outlaw West is very highly recommended reading.

This book is a must for Old West enthusiasts.
I bought this book when I saw that it was in its sixth printing, which means it must be good reading. It is. The author covers the famous outlaw sites in most of the western states and many of the not so famous sites. It's an especially good book to take along on a trip through the West. I strongly recommend it.

Las Vegas Access
The Access series are very good and the Las Vegas book is a favorite of mine. When ever I go for business or pleasure, I take the current Access along. I have found that with the multitude of changes the earlier editions help to remind me of Casinos and attractions that are no more. As Vegas continues to develope at an extraordinary pace, I find I look forward to the new release more and more.

Exemplary guide book in a soft cover.
Access Las Vegas brings a colorful guide to the subject of the city of light, Las Vegas. With reviews of Hotels and Casinos with resturant ratings as well as a nod to the arts and sciences (Museums), this is one book I will not leave behind when visiting Nevada's most famous city.

Ther are maps that section the city into easy to cover areas and color coding to help distinguish the variety of critiqued locations. Backround and history with many best fo lists by the knowledgable and famous citizens give excellent insights to getting around and geating the most from your visit. Concise examination of the many casino games help the novice may their way through a bewildering array of choices.

All in all perhaps the best book for the money of it's kind. The access line of books are all quite good.
