Some Essential Articles for the study of the Mexican War
A wonderful and mandatory book for any Mexican War enthusiast. The best article is from one of the two Mexican historians, Miguel A. Gonzalez Quiroga. He examines the humanity on both sides. Mostly ignoring whose fault the war was, he writes a beautiful eulogy of the dead of both sides. Wonderful! The worst article was the other historian from Mexico, Josefina Zoraida Vazguez. She beats a dead horse. Her argument has been argued by American historians since the 60's. However, Sam Haynes's article on relations between the US, Mexico, and Britain is superb. It not only discusses the almost inevitable conflict with Britain and the US prior to the fighting at the Rio Grande, but also points out the why the British were not coming in to help Mexico. Another superb article was by Michael Roth's article on Journalism in the war. Roth's work is a must for those interested in the cultural side of the American soldiers experience in Mexico. Overall and excellent collection of work.
Earth's Mystical Grand Canyons

Superb photography, enthralling stories, must have guidebook
Richard D. Fisher's coverage of the earth's canyons is breathtaking. If you are a world traveler, this guidebook is a must have! The first explorer to many of these canyon areas has done an extensive study of the terrain, local peoples, and wildlife. Many of the stories are first-hand accounts of his experiences in the canyons and with the local peoples. Richard's photography pulls you into the magnificent atmosphere of the surroundings. I highly recommend this guidebook for individuals headed to the canyons and for the armchair enthusiast. It doesn't get better than this!

Fascinating reading
After the end of the Second World War, a number of African Americans, including many of our most talented intellectuals, decided that America was just not a sufficiently hospitable home. Those who could left for Europe. Many, landed in Paris, which provided a far more civilized society.
Literary giants like James Baldwin, Richard Wright and other intellectuals found a place where their worth was determined by things more significant than skin color. This is the story of their experiences.
Another book worth searching for.
Facing West: The Metaphysics of Indian-Hating and Empire Building
Published in Textbook Binding by Univ of Minnesota Pr (Trd) (1980)
Amazon base price: $20.00
Average review score:
A work of incredible historical significance.
"To all appearances," wrote Richard Drinnon, "it all began innocently enough with a first victim" (Indian-Hating 35). Indeed, in Drinnon's 'Facing West: The Metaphysics of Indian-Hating and Empire-Building,'those first victims finally have the chance to tell their story through the records of their conquerors. From John Endicott's war on the Niantics and Pequots, to the horrors of the My Lai massacre, Drinnon illustrates, with passion, power and unrelenting wit, how Indian-hating in the Americas became a national pastime, and how that same hate was turned against the native populations of the Phillipines and Southeast Asia. A tremendous feat of scholarship that should not be missed.
Four Days from Fort Wingate: The Lost Adams Diggings
Published in Paperback by Caxton Press (01 December, 1994)
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:
A facinating analysis and story about a lost gold mine.
This book turned my brother and me into "nuts," about the Adams diggings. Nothing stirs a person's imagination more than a real mystery. Richard French does a great job of telling the story of his (and others) efforts to understand and solve the mystery of the lost Adams diggings - a fantastic gold strike made and then lost in the Southwest. This book will really make your mind work... and dream.

Wine Country Wisdom
There's a lot of detail packed into this small guide. I liked the winery reviews because they outline what kind of experience each winery offers along with the basics about their history and wines. And restaurant reviews were frank and on the money.

Hiking the California Coastal Trail, Volume 1: Oregon to Monterey (2nd Edition)

best day or through hike book I've seen for California coast
This is the best book I have seen for showing in detail where to hike on the California coast, from the Oregon border to the bottom of Monterey county. Other books talk about restaurants, inns, city walks or big trails, but don't take you to the trail head and tell you where to turn left and how far to the next marker. Besides being a real trail guide (even telling where this "coastal trail" has not been completed and how to keep going anyway) the book has interesting history and anecdotes. I have looked at dozens of books on the coast, and this one is THE BEST.

The real individuals behind the silver screen
In The Hollywood West: Lives Of Film Legends Who Shaped It, Richard Etulain and Blenda Riley have collaboratively assembled informative commentaries by eleven historians which dramatize the past century of "Hollywood Westerns" to reveal the real individuals behind the Western's greatest film heroes and heroines. Ranging from the Bronco Billy Anderson, William S. hart, and Tom Mix silent Westerns of heroic men on horseback with six-guns in their hands, to Gene Autry and Roy Rogers (the singing cowboys of the 1930s), to John Wayne and Gary Cooper style larger-than-life Western heroes of the 1940s, to female Western movie role models Barbara Stanwyck and Katy Jurado, and the Native American actors Jay Silverheels, Iron Eyes Cody, and Chief Dan George, The Hollywood West magnificently showcases some of the most influential characters and themes to have a lasting impact on American culture and popular imagination.
