A "must have" for any fan of the TV Western era!
I picked up this book when it first came out in hardcover years ago, and I'm glad to see it is once again available --- my original copy is nearly worn out! It's not only well-written and well-researched, it will also reawaken warm memories of years gone by for any baby-boomer who grew up in the days when TV westerns were the bread and butter of family entertainment. An excellent, comprehensive thumbnail guide to TV westerns!

The Texas Overland Expedition of 1863
I enjoyed this book for several reasons. It is short; yet it is detailed enough to effectively describe the battles in this campaign. It also includes brief profiles of the commanders of the particular conflicts-both Federal and Confederate. And an interesting fact from this Texas Overland Expedition was the presence of six governors of Texas in the two armies.

This story about Texas and a Civil War Campaign all started with a plan conceived in the minds of a group of New England businessmen some two decades before the Civil War and that didn't even take place in Texas. However, when these northerners realized that war was inevitable and that Texas was siding with the Confederate States, rather than give up their lucrative idea, they considered the war to be in their favor. If they could enlist the help of the president and War Department, they could move into Texas under the Union Flag and consequently have the Federal troops to protect their northern settlers. From this nucleus, the story evolved to its climax of the battle. It is good reading.

Texas Reflections (Texas Littlebooks)

Author: Richard Reynolds
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

A feast of words and images
"Texas Reflections" combines the nature photographs of Richard Reynolds with quotes from a number of different authors. As a whole, the book is a stirring celebration of the outdoors.

The book contains an interesting preface in which Reynolds discusses his approach to photography. The authors whose quotes accompany his photos include Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Marcus Aurelius, William Blake, Walt Whitman, Kahlil Gibran, and others.

In his photography, Reynolds has captured some great natural treasures: Capitol Peak in Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, Daingerfield State Park, and more. His photos are truly beautiful, and generally feature stunning interplay of light and color. Some of the most memorable images in the book include the surreal glow of light in cottonwood trees along Limpia Creek, a bronze-and-gold hued sunrise at South Padre Island, waters rushing over the rocks at McKinney Falls State Park, and much more. An excellent gift for those who revere the beauty of the natural world.

Tolkien Criticism: An Annotated Checklist (The Serif Series: Bibliographies and Checklists, No. 39)
Published in Hardcover by Kent State Univ Pr (1981)
Author: Richard C. West
Amazon base price: $27.50
Average review score:

Good descriptive bibliography
This is the 1981 2nd edition of Richard West's excellent descriptive bibliography of Tolkien criticism. While it's not as comprehensive as Judith Johnson's 1986 bibliography of the same, and while it lacks the useful year-by-year organization of the same, it is much more descriptive. The major works of criticized are summaried in substantial detail and the cross-references are particularly good. I'd consider both this and the Johnson bibliography to be essential for any Tolkien scholar-- it's only a shame that neither's been updated for over 15 years!

Western County Prison

Author: Richard A. Landers
Amazon base price: $10.95

One of the best books I've read in years!
One of my favourite movies of all time is The Shawshank Redemption. It was one of the most original plots I have ever seen in a movie and I have waited a long time for another original plot to appear in the form of a movie or a book. Western County Prison is the book that has ended the wait. From the minute I opened the the book I was unable to put it down until I had read through to the final page.

A superbly original story line with some excellent perspective on every day life. If you are looking for a truly exciting story that will keep you on the edge of your seat until you finish the book, then this is the book for you!

My question is, when is the movie going to be released so I can own it on DVD as well as in paperback!

Wheel Boats on the Missouri
Published in Paperback by Montana Historical Society (2001)
Authors: Henry Atkinson, Stephen Watts Kearny, Richard E. Jensen, and James S. Hutchins
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

A specialized slice of early American frontier history
Wheel Boats On The Missouri: The Journals And Documents Of The Atkinson-O'fallon Expedition 1824-1826 is an archival reference showcasing a specialized slice of early American frontier history - as reflected by the original words of the wheel boat men who were directed by President James Monroe to negotiate peace treaties with Native American tribes along the Missouri River. The resulting use of 475 infantry soldiers, "gunboat diplomacy," and man-powered wheel boats across a 3,000 mile expedition is meticulously detailed among numerous primary references. Journals dealing with daily life, navigation difficulties, American Indian cultures and political negotiations provide an amazing glimpse into army life in an America of almost two centuries past. Wheel Boats On The Missouri is an impressive work of scholarship and a strongly recommended addition to academic and community library American history reading lists and reference collections.

William H. Ashley: Enterprise and Politics in the Trans-Mississippi West
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (1990)
Author: Richard M. Clokey
Amazon base price: $22.95
Average review score:

Intriguing, visionary figure of the early west
Richard Clokey has turned out a well deserved and most admirable biography of early nineteenth century entrepreneur William Ashley. Those readers well versed in the fur trade era are no doubt familiar with the name Ashley. What many may not be aware of is his life before and after these adventurous years in the mountains. Clokey does delve into these fur trade years of the 1820's extremely well, giving Ashley credit for initiating the annual rendezvous by bringing the goods and commodities to the mountains in exchange for the furs; paving the way for the future Overland and Oregon Trails; exploring the Green River, etc., but he also brings to light the pre and post years of this time period. Before the fur trade years, Ashley was involved in lead mining, gunpowder production, land speculation, was the leader a voluntary ranger militia to thwart Indian hostilities and had a failed attempt at running for Missouri Governor. Many of these endeavors had their ups and downs and would discourage most people from pursuing any further attempts at business. The fur trade years went quite well, Ashley sold the business but remained the agent, banker and financier for the company to market the furs. Later he went full throttle into Missouri politics, being elected for three terms into the House of Representatives. Although a controversial figure while a politician (since he claimed himself an independent Jacksonian), he nevertheless had a complete career in this profession. An insightful book about a special pioneer of the early 1800's.

With Badges & Bullets: Lawmen & Outlaws in the Old West
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (2001)
Authors: Richard W. Etulain and Glenda Riley
Amazon base price: $27.65
Average review score:

The real West by those that lived it!
Wyatt Earp, Will Bill Hickok, Pat Garrett, Doc Holliday, Billy the Kid, and Jesse James are but a few of the legends of the Old West. With Bullets and Badges they come to life and the stories are remarkable and fascinating.

History has a way of distorting the truth and legends make the truth hard to find, this book takes out the legend and myth and bring you the story of some of the most famous and infamous men and women who have ever lived/

You'll read the way that lawmen "crossed" over the line to catch the "bad" guys, See how the Tombstone really was and how Wild Bill Hickok dies playing poker. The amazing thing about this book is how easy to read it was.

The style of the author makes this book a real pleasure to read. The book cleared up many misconceptions I had about the way the old west was run and those that lived during that time. A first class job and a must have for those interested in history.
