Excellent overview of magnetic recording for the engineer.
Wang and Taratorin present the best technical overview of magnetic recording I have seen to date. What I found especially valuable is the extensive discussion of both the characteristics and measurement of the principal non-linearities impacting magnetic recording. These include such things as non-linear transition shift, hard-easy transition shift, MR assymetries, and self erasure. The books focus is on the recording/playback processes, but also includes a reasonable introduction to coding and partial response channel design. For readers who want more details on the codes used historically, Mee and Daniel's works are better.

Clear and concise, what I would expect from Hartman
I bought my first Hartman vent book as a student in 1977. This new edition continues to serve my needs some 20+ years later in the ever changing world of mine ventilation.

Mini-Hydropower

A Solid Reference for Mini Hydropower Engineers
- Strong on hydrology, resource estimation, feasibility, layout planning and civil/structural aspects - Coverage of turbines is a little too theoretical for those intent on practical applications - Machine and electrical sections are adequate - Generally takes a practical approach with many reference tables graphs etc. for parameter estimation. - Draws heavily on experience in China (how did they get permission to publish I wonder). - Some 'Chinglish' but nothing thats indecipherable, and some authors obviously more fluent than others. - All in all a worthwhile text that makes a good attempt at drawing together critical information over the broad range of disciplines involved in minihydropower, and doing it generally with practice (rather than theory) in mind. Minihydropower professionals shouldn't be without it.

The State-of-the-Art in pattern discovery
I have studied this book for some time now. The book is clearly directed to researchers in the area of pattern discovery with particular attention to biomolecular data. It collects contributions from the some of the most important research groups in the field. Each chapter is written by a different group but they are all very interesting. I have only a complaint about the quality of the print, not good enough for the cost of the book.

Good Unifying View
Although this book may be somewhat outdated (published in the mid-70's), it does provide a cohesive view of the developments in logic up until that point. One gets a very strong sense of the status of logical development, while at the same time receiving a historical motivation for the methods employed in developing the theory. Many proofs are shortened or synopsized, however the integrity and technical level of the work is never compromised. In my opinion, the sections on Model Theory, Set Theory, Proof Theory and Recursion Theory provided the reader with a good sense of the major results in those areas. The section on computers (and their limitations) was a hoot to read, because of the limited view provided by the author, but otherwise, Wang has a strong intuition as to where modern developments could have led. Recommended for anyone trying to get a unifying view of the major developments in logic.

Practices of Reason: Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics
Published in Paperback by Clarendon Pr (1995)
Authors: C. D. C. Reeve and Wang
Amazon base price: $27.50
Used price: $8.25
Average review score:

Suspended study
Reeve has written an interesting book defending Aristotle's bios theoretikos as the aim of his ethics. His exposition of the role of dialectic and "nous" in relation to practical reasoning is especially pertinent. He presents an alternative interpretation to all those who currently try to make isolated use of what Aristotle has to say about practical reason in constructing "independent alternatives" to theoretical reason. The book makes great reading almost all the way to the end, because Reeve is careful in considering different interpretations, and keeps the reader in suspense about what kind of activity what he calls "study" (theoria), really is. Unfortunatley the end is a disappointment, since we really don't get an answer.Reeve thinks Aristotle's ideal of a bios theoretikos is outdated, and maybe it is. But since Reeve doesn't really discuss different possible contents of theoretical activity, I don't think we get a chance to agree or disagree. So, the suspense remains unresolved after finishing the book.

Rare account of seven years in the Chinese gulag
Highly readable account of the author's seven years in the Chinese gulag ("reform through labor") beginning in 1957. Period included the "three years of suffering," when the disastrous results of the Great Leap Forward and poor harvests starved 30 million or more. Labor camp prisoners were used for experiments with anti-famine foods such as paper pulp and marsh plankton food substitutes. Bao Ruo-wang was half Corsican and he was freed in 1964 following French diplomatic recognition of China.

Rock Wives: The Hard Lives and Good Times of the Wives, Girlfriends, and Groupies of Rock and Roll

Boring
I was really looking forward to this book, hoping to get a real glimpse into rock lives, but there is very little offered. Mostly the women just analyze the relationships and don't offer any juicy tidbits. If you're looking for outrageous tales of rock star excess - this is not it.

Rock wives and girlfriends, in their own words
If you want to know how Jim Morrison's romance REALLY started with Patricia Kenneally, and what she REALLY thought of him, read this book! It doesn't have all the bile of her own book on Morrison ("Strange Days: My Life With and Without Jim Morrison"). If you've read "Strange Days", then you should read "Rock Wives" because that is the REAL truth. Thankfully condensed, minus the vitriole, ranting, raving, and stretched-truths. It's very interesting to read a book like "Strange Days" (where the author trashes Oliver Stone for implying Jim Morrison didn't take his "marriage" to her seriously) then read a book like "Rock Wives", where Kennealy ADMITS to Victoria Balfour that Jim Morrison took their wedding ceremony "probably not too seriously". Gee, maybe THAT'S why Stone portrayed things the way he did....he read Victoria Balfour's book first, which was published in 1986! I guess Kennealy wasn't so intent on wearing rose-tinted specticles back then. :)

Also fascinating: frank discussions with the likes of Myra Lewis (Jerry Lee Lewis' "child bride"), Linda Lawrence Leach (mother of Brian Jones' baby, married to Donovan Leitch), Anita Pallenberg (Brian Jones, Keith Richards, of course!), Jo Howard (Ron Wood, Rolling Stones), Angie Bowie (David Bowie), Marilyn Wilson (Brian Wilson, Beach Boys), Gail Zappa (Frank Zappa), Monika Dannemann (Jimi Hendrix, last girlfriend before he died), Ingrid Croce (Jim Croce), Bebe Buell (Todd Rundgren, Rod Stewart, Elvis Costello...Bebe also has her own book now, "Rebel Heart"), Leslie Meat Loaf (Meat Loaf), Lee Angel (Little Richard), Susan Rotolo (Bob Dylan), Claudette Robinson (Smokey Robinson), Carlene Carter (Nick Lowe), Vera Ramone (Dee Dee Ramone), and David Wolff (the lone male interviewee, Cyndi Lauper). There is a chapter for each interviewee, and several pictures of each.

Author Victoria Balfour has worked as a researcher for The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Rolling Stone, and New York magazine, and has had articles published in the New York Times, Esquire, and USA Today. Here are fabulous, revealing, exclusive interviews with the women closest to the stars of rock and roll, lots of great quotes!!! Thank you, Victoria Balfour, for a job well done!
