A Treasure Chest
This is a classic. Every serious historian of African Americans needs to have this book. I am a descendant of these people and much of what is in the book confirmed what I have been told since I was a boy. Thanks to those tireless warriors who coompleted this work for without them, it would have remained hidden away.

This account of a people dedicated to freedom is a must read.

Insider's Perspective
As a descendant of Florida's Apalachicola Indians removed to Texas in 1834, I know the Black Seminole as my kin. Porter's narrative parallels our oral tradition and enhances it with photos and maps. Facts presented are well researched and documented with scholarly precision. Historic accuracy is near flawless. Language of the text is readable and the style captivating. No dry history here! Porter brings this forgotten segment of Florida's mixed blood Seminoles to life in seventeen easy chapters. Like a piece of tender, seasoned vinson, it leaves the reader filled but wanting more. No worse injustice could be done to Professor Porter that compare The Black Seminoles to another text. The power of the Porter pen has no peer. Without reservation, Porter's text is a unique gift to all of us. sixwomen@nettally.com

Excellant General Surgery Text Book
This is an excellant text book of general surgery. The book covers all the basic topics of surgery in a great mannor. There are plenty of good quality pictures and illustrations. The book is well divided into chapters. There is a summary at the end of each topic which gives a reivew of all the contents. I would highly recommend this book for rmedical students and surgical residents.

Outstanding introductory surgical text
I am a graduating senior medical student, and I happened to come upon this text quite by accident. Intending only to browse it for the moment, I found the text to be captivating. The author gives a clear and concise overview of every major surgical topic in a way that is approachable and easily understandible. The tables and figures nicely complement the "high yield" text. I only wish I had this text when I did my surgical clerkship.

An easy read in understanding the Microsoft Antitrust Case
With all the various information available concerning the Microsoft monopoly, it was wonderful to find an objective source that followed the events before and during the Microsoft case, analyzed the monopolistic tendencies of the software market in general, and compared this information with previous monopolies. The best characteristic of this book is that it explains the events and legalities of the case in such a way that it is not at all difficult to understand.

State of the art.
The contributions to this work are all excellent, well written articles by the most respected experts on the leading edge of antitrust analysis.

secret to a successful civil engineering job hunt
If you're a civil engineer looking to make a move these days, it will pay you to know how to use the software tools built by Haestad. This company is the standard in water modeling. I used this book in college and recently acquired the latest edition to bone up for a water resources position that was being offered in California. This book dispenses with all the deep theory and gets right down to the practical business of modeling. Since, it includes academic versions of all the standard models, it was easy to get a refresher course, and I held my own during the interview.

I like the fact that Haestad Methods has added more software and coverage. Highly recommended.

Fantastic Book
For those of you sick of engineering texts filled with a bunch of theoretical junk, this is the book for you. It very nicely blends a little bit of theory with some real-world practical applications and the software in the back really brings hydraulic engineering into the 21st century.

A Cop's Life: Philadelphia, 1953-1983

A Fun Informative Easy Read - A must read
If you want to know what it is really like to be a police officer in "real life", you must read this fun, informative book. The style is, informal, real, refreshing, and very enjoyable. I could not put this book down. If you are like me and enjoy understanding your world a little better then this book belongs in your personal library. I loved it!

Travel back in time and ride shift with a Philly Cop
This book is a departure from my normal reading genres, but a friend recommended I read it and I'm glad he did. It is written in an unpretentious, personal narrative writing style of an uncle to a nephew (Grubb to Cole). The book draws you into the world of a rookie cop, poorly equipped and trained by today's standards, in Philadelphia in the 1950's. Mr. Grubb takes us back into his world and provides lessons in both history and humanity. What impressed me most was the quiet, unassuming professionalism and personal character Mr. Grubb demonstrated while working in some of Philadelphia's toughest neighborhoods peopled with pimps, prostitutes, pushers and junkies -- good cops and bad. This book is nothing like the sanitized TV cop shows of today. It is instead an accurate account of a difficult job in a different time. Check it out. I think you'll enjoy it.

Too good to be true -- but it is true!
I ordered this book for three reasons: Since I taught a course in college-level nutrition, I am appalled at how terrible the diets of too many of us really are. Plus I am something of a fitness nut. Finally I am also a "foodie" who enjoys cooking and eating delicious "gourmet quality" meals that also incorporate first-rate nutrition.

This is the diet book that the USA has been waiting for but too few persons seem to know about it -- yet. It is scientifically accurate and the conclusions of the authors are sound. It is proof that eating for improved health and fitness need not be boring. Indeed, the day after I received the book, I prepared the mango/black bean salad to rave reviews and no leftovers.

The message is not new: We need to increase the fruits, veggies, and whole grain foods in our diet, and to decrease red meats, sodium, and sweets. Although the target audience is those with hypertension, nearly everyone can benefit from accepting the book's challenge to try the DASH diet for two weeks -- and for a lifetime. The fact that the authors go beyond the science and present imaginative, delicious recipes and menus is a definite strength of the book.

A salute to the authors for this timely book!

A scientifically proven method of reducing blood pressure
Dr. Thomas Moore's DASH Diet For Hypertension poses a drug-free, scientifically proven method of reducing blood pressure and is based on two large clinical trials documenting dietary approaches to controlling hypertension. A team of doctors explores how the DASH diet system works, from choices in fruits, vegetables and low-fat diary products to the right serving portion and the influence of exercise.

A beautiful and poignant "goodbye".
Thomas McGrath was truly one of the most talented of 20th Century US poets. His life was lived to the fullest and he espoused, and suffered for, a political philosophy with which most of us would disagree. A knowledge and understanding of this life makes the reading of his poetry the more enjoyable. The poems in this book range over tributes to family, reflections of childhood and the influence of his travels and travails. Most powerful are the glimpses into the inevitability and the drawing near of the end-particularly powerful in this aspect is "Waiting". These poems need to be read in small bites with plenty of time and quietude for reflection upon each.

One of America's Greatest Poets
Thomas McGrath was truly one of America's finest poets. It makes me so sad to see his books going out of print without ever reaching the audience that they deserved. Unfortunately, you will not be reading this unless you already know what I am talking about. In that case Death Song is as moving, powerful, abrasive, and sweet as all of McGrath's poetry. Perhaps, because of it timing and my attachment to McGrath I found it almost painful to read, as if listening to all the sorrows and joys of his life come to an end. It wasn't an easy life, but it was a beautiful one. This book shows that and is worthy of a great poet.

This is more than a reference, it is a handbook and diagnostic guide good for the EMT to doctor. My only complaint is that it should have been a hard cover for the price.

Emergent Management of Trauma
This is a compact but detailed practical manual of trauma care. The text is clear and supplemented by high quality tables and illustrations, and is comprehensive. A particular strength is the discussion on advantages and disadvantages of various practical procedures, and I have found this book invaluable as a quick reference in the resuscitaion area. Highly recommended to all emergency medicine trainees.
