A question about this book.
This is not a review, but I don't know any other forum for asking this question:

Does this book feature photographs of the key players?

fantastic job!
As the great grandaughter of Ada and Jim LeBoeuf, I really appreciate the job done by the author. He presents the facts of the case. When reading the newspaper accounts during the time of the trial, it seemed as if the media was anxious to just print dirt and rumor which may have had a great deal to do with the outcome of the trial. Thank you Mr. Hargroder for a well written book on my family history.

Ada and the Doc
Charles Hargroder has accomplished something that few writers can claim. His "Ada and the Doc" is a little gem in the world of non-fiction.

He has written about an unusual case, and it turns out to be a very accurate accounting of the events that form the basis for this non-fiction book. His credentials as an outstanding reporter for The Times-Picayune (New Orleans) and all the awards he has garnered for his work make him more than qualified to compile this type information and write a book about it. As far as documentation, it is definitely the best.

As a regular book reviewer for several major newspapers, I found this work to be one of the best to come out of Louisiana in quite some time. There are many writers who claim New Orleans as their base of operations, and they use the atmosphere of this historic city to illustrate much of their material.

Hargroder actually grew up in the area where these people lived so he knew where to get the records and where to find the people who knew of the case. It's a part of Louisiana that you seldom read about but yet it is one of the most historic parts of the state. He also made it a point to ignore all the heresay surrounding this case. He did not pad the book with this kind of personal opinions and "old tales," which, by the way, are still circulating today. The relatives he interviewed gave him an accurate accounting too.

With access to The Times-Picayune files, courthouse records, and the interviews, he has pieced together a very interesting story, factual and entertaining from the reader's viewpoint. Even current Governor Mike Foster, who also hails from this area, complimented Hargroder on his work.

It isn't every day that you pick up a book of non-fiction and read it as if it were fiction. This is one of those books. It holds your interest, and you can almost feel the sweltering heat of the courtroom. The people are real, and the events surrounding the case are still discussed to this day.

Hargroder has done his homework. The end result is a factual look at one of the biggest trials of the century. "Ada and the Doc" should be on every collector's shelf, especially those individuals with Louisiana ties.

A Manager Must read - Read it or perish!
Built on Trust needs to be read by CEOs and managers of all types. After graduating with my MBA I worked for two different companies over a three year span and I found both organizations completely lacking basic managerial capabilities and functionality. Being a young, ambitious guy I knew I was "wet behind the ears" but my managers were deplorable at best. The result was a downward spiral in productivity and results at both companies.

The key principles of the book are closure, commitment, respect, responsibility, communication and speedy resolution. I won't go into depth about the principles but most people don't understand, including myself before I read this, how each contributes to an organization's overall success and "social capital."

What the authors are trying to do is get companies to apply their "Trust Model" and the result is, in their minds and mine, that an organization will end up with a competitive advantage over their competitor.

I found the book to be quite similar in many regards to Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs at times since one of the goals is to help employees in attaining "self actualization" where their aspirations and sense of contribution occur.

The models' goals, to list a few, include (1) increasing group intelligence through communication (2) increasing creativity (3) making people feel passionate about work (4) creating synergies and (5) getting everyone focused on a common goal.

SENIOR MANAGERS OR ASPIRING MANAGERS! BUY THIS BOOK! This book, along with Peter Drucker's The Essential Drucker, are where I would start to create a better managed, more efficient business.

It is my belief that just about everyone has a passionate desire to contribute. We have a hunger to be a part of something bigger than ourselves, especially when that something reflects and amplifies our inherent values. That is what this book is about. Creating the organization that everyone loves to work for and that the best talent flocks to. If anyone wants some other good business books just e-mail me.

Outstanding, practical advice
I've had the benefit and pleasure of being taught both individually and in team forum by Dave and Arky Ciancutti from the Learning Center in San Anselmo. Arky's book is a great compliment to the in-person sessions and an excellent standalone pice of work. Sound, practical advice on how to develop and sustain personal and business relationships. I won't go as far as to say this changed my life -- but that's not far from the truth. This is a very readable book, with checklists, advice, key points all presented very clearly. Read cover to cover or use as a reference when your technique needs brushing up. Arky clearly explains why things happen and why we do what we do. Armed with those data we're much better prepared to make a change for the better.

A Refreshing View
It's refreshing to see an alternative to all the books on Machiavellian politics, intrigue and all the derivatives. Here is an approach to leadership that will give an organization a competitive advantage AND provide a healthy culture and work environment. I hope this book is the opening to new ways of doing business.

weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org
This interesting work is a collection of essays by some of the world's most respected leadership thinkers. Contributors include Charles Handy, James O'Toole, Thomas Stewart, Tom Peters, Barry Posner and James Kouzes. These essays were first presented at a special conference held to honor Warren Bennis. Organizers labeled the conference a festschrift, a German word for a volume of essays assembled by colleagues to be a tribute to a renowned scholar. The essays were edited and divided into five parts:

1. Setting the Stage for the Future.

2. The Organization of the Future

3. The Leader of the Future.

4. How Leaders Stay on Top of Their Game.

5. Insights from Young Leaders.

The result is an insightful examination on the state of leadership today and the challenges it can expect to experience in the future. For example, Bennis writes the first essay and presents a number of challenging issues, including the widening disparity of talent among income levels, growing demographic changes between young and old and balancing the demands of work and home. James O'Toole looks at the organization of the future and remarks that leaders should view their tasks "as creating the systems under which others would be encouraged to do all the things that typically end up on the desk of the do-it-all leader."

The Future of Leadership is a comprehensive examination of leadership today and tomorrow provided by a number of insightful modern day thinkers. It asks some judicious questions and dares to look into the future with assurance and confidence. Some essays are better written than others, but every reader will find some valuable material and learn a new perspective from its pages.

Highly Recommended!
The Germans call it a festschrift - a book stemming from the celebration honoring a renowned scholar, in this case Warren Bennis. The luminaries (including Bennis himself) who gathered in May 2000 at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business for this festschrift offer 19 thoughtful chapters on leadership issues. In fact, the consistent quality and creativity may pleasantly surprise you. The only exception is an imaginative, but shallow and self-absorbed clunker from Tom Peters. We [...] recommend this thought-provoking collection to students and practitioners of the mysterious art of inspiring others to follow.

Great edition of diverse thinking on leadership
This work is a tribute to Warren Bennis, a celebration of his career. In praising him, he challenged those around him to address issues that continue to interest and perplex him. And, despite his years of experience and two million books of his own in print, the questions that remain are often simple and profound.

Answering these questions are top researchers, professors, commentators and consultants. The variety of authors provides a rich tapestry of information, experiences and opinions. What are the keys to great leadership? What makes one high-performing team do great things (The Manhattan Project) and another perpetrate evil (The Final Solution)? As the percent of one's life likely to be engaged in full-time employment declines (from 50 of 68 years in 1960 to 38 of 76 years today), how does this affect the way we lead and live? What happens when good leaders go bad? Is leadership aptitude widely distributed or possessed by a select few? Are business schools up to the task of developing the management and leadership talent for tomorrow?

Given the approximately hundreds of articles and dozens of books on leadership published each year, you might expect to have had these answers or at least these questions raised before. "The future of leadership" offers a fresh, readable perspective, for the business student and the manager. Sure, you might quibble with the eclectic responses and styles of this broad spectrum of authors, but the quality lies in their diversity.

These aren't run of the mill coloring books
This might be the greatest way to self teach a topic ever devised! You have to follow the instructions. What the authors want you to do is read along as you color the book. Each coloring page has an associated page of text. As you read the text it makes reference to certain parts of the drawing. You can't help but learn. The topics range over all areas and habitats of marine biology and hit all the key points covered in any introductory class. They are grouped by habitat, physiology, ethology and again by taxonomic groups. As far as learning style? If you where isolated in the middle of the dessert with this book and a decent set of color pencils then you would come out with an excellent broad base introductory knowledge of marine biology. It would go well with any beginners course also. Don't let the "coloring book" title fool you, a child of five wold enjoy it but an adult would be able to reap all the rewards as well.

everyone loves coloring!
Being a high school teacher, i use this book and the biology coloring book to supplament my class text. It offers very insightful text to accompany each picture. The pictures are very detailed with complete coloring instructions. I was skeptical at first to use it, but the students really get excited about it and seem to get a great deal from finishing them.

Very helpful
I am a college student who found this to be a great secondary resource. Many of the form and function and reproductive strategy summaries contain great information that I have not found in textbooks. The coloring pages are great too, if for no other reason than they reiforce what the organisms look like.

Excellent Guide to Workings of ASPEN Process Model
The book is an absolutely practical treatise of applied thermodymamics. The explanations of how to use property estimation methods are excellent, but invaluable are the comments on their accuracy and recommendations as to when to use which method.

The book served as my operating manual for the ASPEN software for modeling chemical processes. The book documented nearly every method used by ASPEN.

Comprehensive, easy to understand
I was a bit unconfortable when I bought this book since I was suspicious that this one was one of those unreadable thermodynamic books. Fortunately I was wrong. This book provides you with a complete treatment of the properties of gases and liquids in a plain language stressing the understanding of the basic laws governing the behavior of liquids and gases instead of the mathematic that goes with it. The treatment of the topics is very suitable for engineers since it allows quick understanding of the phenomena and provides a wealth of correlations and methods for estimating properties. The appendixes contain all kind of basic information indeed helpful for applying the correlations showed. Without any hesitation, this book is well worth its price.

Life changing insight.
I first learned of Dr. Peebles through a friend. I had a critically ill child, and I was having a great deal of trouble dealing with the situation. Channeling was not something I was familiar with, nor was it the kind of thing of which I would think very highly. A friend convinced me to try a session with Thomas Jacobson as he channeled Dr. Pebbles. He allowed me to videotape the session, and I was amazed by his insight. Even after watching the tape over again and again, it fascinated me. Certainly many naysayers would would dismiss this kind of event,
but I don't agree. No one could provide such deep insight and clairvoiance as a ruse.there was little hesitation. he didn't have time to make up stories to fit the exact circumstances. Even if it was faked somehow, it was outstanding.

This book is a terrific introduction and summary of the teachings of Dr, Pebbles. If you have even the slightest open mind, you will find his approach to life refreshing, clear and simple.

Life changing? Dr. Peebles' teachings changed my life more significantly than anything I have ever done or experienced. He taught me how to deal with my job, my family, my life.

The book has been a lifeline. I have one copy I loan to friends in need. The other, I pick up and reread with great pleasure. I don't normally reread anything.

Don and Linda Pendleton captured the essence of Dr. Pebbles through Thomas Jacobson's channeling. I have been with Thomas, and the Pendletons give us a great insight into the teachings of Dr. Peebles.

Read this with an open mind, and you will never approach life the same way again. It's all good. you'll be glad you did.
If you get half the benefit I did from this book, you will be glad you read it.

A fascinating book, especially for a teen in hard times!
Very recently, two of my grandparents from opposite sides of the family passed away. I was saddened tremendously, and often isolated myself from school friends, sobbing all day long. One day my mom found a few copies of this book in the bookstore (she had been looking for a copy for her friend) and bought two, one to replace the one she had lost, and one to give to her friend. I read her copy and enjoyed it thoroughly; it changed my life forever. I can only give TDwA a solid five stars, as it is one of the greatest books ever written. It sheds light on nearly every aspect of life and death, relationships, and the history of the universe. Buy this book now!

A Heavenly Encounter!
I first met Dr. James Martin Peebles, the grand spirit featured in "To Dance with Angels" through medium Summer Eimers, a friend of the authors. To say the least, the encounter was life-changing. I cannot get enough of the insight, love, and wisdom offered by this beautiful soul. "To Dance with Angels" will inspire you, challenge you to look at the world in a more loving light and help you lighten up just a little on this journey through life. I read it for insight again and again.

Best Book
This is one of the best books you will buy as a medical student or intern. It is a requirement for your pocket. At Barnes-Jewish Hospital they give this to all the interns in July. If you know read it a couple times it will make internship easy...except for the 100 hours a week you will put into the job...Honestly...BUY IT- I would have bought it in medical school if I knew about it.

Internship Must Own
Buy this book if you are a fourth year medical student or intern

Super Resource for Interns
I wish I had had this book as an intern. It's a concise, pocket-sized guide covering the essential need-to-know information for interns. I especially liked the sections on cross cover, triage, and internet resources.

A must have for soon-to-be interns.

My Favourite Book
I first read this book about 16 years ago after my Dad gave it to me. I have read it about ten times since and still have it. I honestly do not think I will ever read a book again in my life that will have the same profound effect on me that this book accomplished. Everyone has someone who they look up to, Pat Pattle, to me is that person. If there is anyone who has any photos of Pat Pattle other than the general two published in books I would be most interested in getting a copy from them.

My Dad flew with him!
I do hope this book will be printed again. My Dad flew with "Pat" Pattle in 80 squadron in the Western Desert and was one of his best friends. The book cannot be faulted for accuracy as I gave my parents a copy some years ago and they read it avidly. My Dad, by the way, was "Old Man Evers ", so called because he was the oldest pilot on the Squadron. Enjoy the book and remember those brave lads.

this is the most exciting book ever.
this book the most intriging book because he was the youngest pilot ever to become the worlds ace of aces.

Good, could easily be better.
While this is a very good reference, it leaves a lot of room for disappointment. Perhaps its time to replace the resistor color code tables with summaries of the IEEE and ITU standards, certainly something more needed in the 2001 world of PCs. When was the last time anyone changed a resistor in a PC other than at the component manufacturer site? And it doesn't yet contain a power supply wire color code, which would be far more useful than resistor codes. There is info on Win98 but not on Win2K or ME (or even NT). The processor and socket list is hopelessly out of date. Fixed disk drive lists are way behind the times with only the most minimal information to help keep the confusing IDE/SCSI/EIDE PIO 1/2/3/4/5 ATA33/66/100/133 drive, BIOS, MB chipset and cable standards straight.
This is a good book for troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining the older PC, but it is not even treading water well in a world of P4 or Thunderbird processors, multi-gigabyte drives or 400Mhz RIMM memory. Still, I have to give it four stars (would be 4.5 if Amazon allowed) because there simply is nothing better out there except keeping file folders full of manufacturer specs, white papers and web page printouts.

A must have for everyone!
When I first open this book I thought I was looking at an larger copy of the Pocket PCREF, after reading through it I found that while most of the information included is exactly like the Pocket version there is was more information included.

Large in size and over 875 pages, this reference book includes everything in the Pocket PCREF plus a very extensive glossary, printer control codes and a much larger pc phone directory. Overall a much better value that the Pocket PCREF book.

The material covered is broken down into categories and each category is covered well. The authors take a great deal of time in making sure the information presented is accurate and well documented. For the money this might be the one to have on your desk.

While this book won't fit in your back pocket, it will fit very nicely in a briefcase. An excellent value for the dollar. You might find similar books on the market, but you'll be hard pressed to find any one better. Well Done Sequoia Publishing.

It's GREAT!!!
I am a 14 year old and have usued this book to help me build everything from forts to computers, it's GREAT and I would recommend it to everyone!

The ABCs of Effective Feedback : A Guide for Caring Professionals

Must reading for executive who wants to help others succeed
The authors summarize their vast experience teaching executives how to give feedback to others...whether they be subordinates or equals. What needs to be fed back? How to "package" that feedback? What barriers keep us from trying? Why do we all think we are good at this basic function, when most of us are miserable and uncomfortable at it? This guidebook tells us how to do it and more importantly, tell us why we must. It stimulates and challenges and ends up inspiring us. It makes it fun. Our professional life is like our personal life. We have a duty to make others better and more productive. We need to invite others to help us to improve. Without feedback, there is no learning. Without constant learning, we stagnate. If we stagnate, our life was not worth living. So this book helps us to be better human beings. Read this book, then reread it. It's like a fine wine, getting richer with age.

The definitive physician's guide to effective communication.
This book could easily have been retitled: what I really should have learned in medical school about effective communication...but never did. The authors present an effective framework for not only learning basic communication skills, but for understanding the more fundamental behaviors which drive our language and communications. Always balancing their message with a caring, sensitive clinical perspective, (including several "right on target" examples) their message should hit home with every physician and caring professional who chose the healing arts as a labor of love, passion, caring and commitment. All too often, in today's healthcare environment financial pressures seem to take us further away than ever from the patient...changing us from patient advocate to adversary. The frustration is further heightened by the sense that "nobody really listens to us anymore." This book lays out a coherent, comprehensive, and compassionate approach to communication which, at its best, should enable and empower us to hear and be heard more effectively - not only with our patients, but with our colleagues, other healthcare industry leaders, and our families. I heartily recommend this book!!!

Incredible resource for those committed to personal growth!
Our body system is nature's most perfect creation, balanced by intricate systems of feedback and communication. Our personal lives and organizational lives are often devoid of feedback; somehow we have lost these essential skills. This book teaches us how to become Aware of our Behavior and its Consequences through an eloquent description of how healthy feedback can change us personally and corporately. As a Family Physician and teacher of Family Physicians, I am certain that the ability to give and receive feedback promotes more healthy relationships. This is the essence of sustainable growth and change. We all have the power to change ourselves and this book is a good way to start that process!
