Great teacher source!
This book provides wonderful sources for the middle school classroom. As an 8th grade social studies teacher I would be lost without this book. It provides a great balance for the textbook, and brings history alive for students. Some sources are advanced, but many can be used in an inclusive classroom setting. A perfect choice for any teacher of early American history.

Masterpiece of capturing the essence of celibate love
Father Dubay's moving and genuinely realistic presentation of the gift of consecrated celibacy takes us beyond the usual stereotypes of celibate life as strictly a means to enhance one's service or show a commitment to community life. Using the classic, solid background which has endured for 2000 years of Christianity, Father Dubay presents a brief but deep exploration of the love, sacrifice, and commitment of vowed chastity, unhampered by trendy or empty references.

Very helpful translation and interpretation
Professor McInerny's translation of this polemical work of Aquinas' is clear and readable. His interpretive notes provide extremely helpful elucidation of the original text. The book has been quite useful for me in my understanding of Aquinas' theory of the nature of the human intellect.

What's really important
this book is one of those that can change your life. A welcome relief from pop psychology, this book makes you dig down and look at the real issues. It is spiritual but not religious, uplifting but not promising an easy solution. Being used as text in many college and graduate school clases.

The Italian Angela's Ashes - Great quick read! An Upper!
For those who are intrigued with the first hand account of immigrants and their experiences during the Great Depression; there is a new publication of note which should not be overlooked simply because it has been published in the untraditional format of an e book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection of early childhood memories, captured from the mind of a girl just coming aware of herself in a family traveling from prosperity to poverty to (in her adult years) prosperity again.

Centering around the story of her Calabrian father; the author, Rose Thomas, tells of his life after he has emigrated to the United States in the beginning of the last century, established a flourishing business, married a bride from the "old country," and together started a family. Trusting that this would be the promised land for them and their children, the ugly reality of how the fleeting American dream really played out in the courts could never have been imagined by these good, real people.

Before finally capturing and recording her family of origin's story in As I Recall - And So It Was, Rose Thomas' dozen true tales of her Italian grocer father's family joys and struggles during her girlhood were often the dinner table delight of friends and family members too young to have been there themselves. Joined by a few memories of her own young family's struggles and then the blessings of her grandchildren, Thomas' stories manage to make the reader of this short memoir fully sense the descriptions of her life centered around the family's store: from the aromas of the roasting coffees and aging cheeses, to the sound of her father singing out the jingles with which he would charm his customers, to the nausea of a first stolen smoke. Traveling back through her memories of the people and places of her childhood, the reader of this firsthand account of one of our nation's most difficult times, the Great Depression, is given an insight only one of it's survivors could offer: it is in the very ordinariness of the cycles of our families' struggles to support and celebrate our lives that history is made.

Another great one from Mr. Thomas
Michael Thomas is one of the best authors writing on financial fiction. I have read all his books and am a huge fan..His books have contained plots and sub plots and are certainly packed with descriptive tales of intrigue and deceipt. Bakers Dozen does not disapoint. H.A. Baker is a tricky character..a man with honor that would face you in a duel today if you asked. This book is a great read..thanks Mr. Thomas for several hours of fun!

Barney Google & Snuffy Smith: 75 Years of an American Legend
Published in Paperback by Kitchen Sink Press (1995)
Authors: Billy De Beck, Brian Walker, Fred Lasswell, Billy Debeck, and M. Thomas Ange
Amazon base price: $16.95

An excellent condensation of a classic comic strip
Billy DeBeck began, with Barney Google,a chronicle of American lifestyle in the 1920s-which was marked by daring, willingness to take risks and cheerful optomism.Barney Google had some times at the race track, with Sparky doing his best at races-and even winning them on occasion. There were some fascinating stories well-worth reprinting in their entirty.DeBeck's Bughouse Fables and Bunky are also represented.(Learn what OKMNX means.) As time went on,especialy during the Depression, the stories took a different slant.Barney speant much time out of America, either in the Mideast or in the Carribean. When he did return to America,it was to inherited property in the Ozarks. Then he befriended Snuffy Smith, who took center-stage more and more as time went on. Although Billy DeBeck never completely forgot Barney Google, his assistant and successor, country boy Fred Laswell, found it much easier to concentrate on Snuffy an' his kin an' pals.As a result Barney Google became an occasional visitor in what is now Snuffy's territory.Yet it is because of Laswell's own brand of country-charm that the strip has lasted this long. It is easy to think of Billy DeBeck's Barney Google(1919-1934),DeBeck and Laswell's Barney Google and Snuffy Smith(1935-1942)and Fred Laswell's Snuffy Smith(1943-present)as seperate strips unto themselves.

Worth Every Penny!
This book is an outstanding guide to the marine life found along the shores of the Pacific Northwest. Before I go further, I should note that it is NOT a pocket guide. But if you slip it into a daypack, you will be amply rewarded. Dr. Niesen has written a book that in very clear language helps you identfy what you are looking at, learn about its life habits, and learn about its habitat. Its emphasis on habitats, and arrangement by type of organism within each habitat, is extremely helpful. The black and white photos are usually pretty good, although sometimes dark, but the section of color plates is really good. What are really outstanding are the line drawings--David Wood, the artist, really captures the organisms in a way that brings out details yet preserves the basic nature of the organism.

The book also gives a great (meaning clear yet not too simple) introduction to marine biology for the Pacific Northwest, explaining tides, currents, the origin of the coast , and the basic biology of the major groups (taxa) of organisms. Furthermore, he provides tips on beachcombing.

All in all, a very handy reference. I will consider it for my Marine Biology class for non-majors (I'd use it with a majors course, too, if I taught one!).
