magical for dino-loving stamp collectors
This book is about dinosaur-commemorative stamps, the art behind the stamps and the dinosaurs that inspired the art. Many children (and their parents) are discovering stamps in the mid-to-late elementary years, and the beautiful dinosaur stamp releases of the past few years are a great way to lead from a small child's fascination with dinosaurs to begin a lifetime hobby. I purchased the featured page "The World of Dinosaurs" as a stocking stuffer for my child when it came out a couple of years ago, and we were delighted to match it up with the book. The book itself was a discovery of a stamp-loving friend. As a person who does not buy books that will only be read once, I recommend it as both a gift and a worthy addition to the home library.

Jefferson on Religion in Public Education

Freedom of the Mind
Robert Healy's "Jefferson on Religion in Public Education" is a great read. Healy traces Jefferson's philosophy regarding education from his early days as a member of the Virginia Legislature to his creation of the University of Virginia near the end of his life. Healy relates Jefferson's thought on the importance of education to a free society and how only an educated populace can live free.

Healy tackles the divisive world of religion and public education by deliniating Jefferson's views. Jefferson did believe religion was compatable with education, but he did not believe education should be dominated by sectarian bigots. Jefferson eliminated religious teaching from the elementary school curriculum thinking children too young for such complex issues as religious dogma and tenets.

Jefferson was hostile not to religious belief, he himself believed in God, but was hostile to fanatical religious views which had inflicted hatred and fanaticism on the world. He believed school was for teaching the "illuminating" of the human mind, not indoctrinating with sectarian belief.

Mr Healy's book is a comprehensive study and worth the purchase.

A Delightful Romp by a Booker Prize Winner
"Lady with a Laptop" is a howlingly funny sendup of the Greek island setting in which Don Thomas leads workshops and, when this manuscript was in progress, treated attendees to excerpts. There we found ourselves practicing the literary craft in sometimes tense proximity to drum-beating, vegetarian wannabe-shamans. The New Wave personalities and spirit of the place are vividly captured and, for extra spice, the author's alter-ego is faced with an entirely fictive problem: the mysterious death of the title character.

Daguerreotype history at it's best
The resurgence of interest in daguerreotypes (witness the the recent auction record of $315,000 for one image) has resulted in a host of beautiful books, of which this volume ranks as the best. Delores Kilgo has done a masterful job of presenting the unparalleled collection of the Missouri Historical Society. Nowhere else will you find the work of one photographer so magnificently displayed and critiqued.

The definitive guide for the lineman/cableman
I used this book as a reference for a project I needed to do on splicing. I found the information contained was concise and clear. The book covers a wide variety of subjects that are very relevant to the jobs that a lineman and cableman would need to perform everyday.

Okay, so I know the editor...
Okay, so I know the editor and all... so I'm biased. I'm a moderate student of the Civil War, but I found this to be a really refreshing way to study the War--through political cartoons. Cartoons of that era seem so much more complicated and intricate that they do today. I learned a lot that I didn't already know, and in a very enjoyable way.

Intellectual Bridges link Spain and Germany
This splendid book is a must for anyone interested in Spanish-German relations over the last several hundred years. Since Spain was long part of the Habsburg Empire, and since Franco's Spain was allied with Hitler's Germany, those relations are both complex and significant. The book's 21 essays cover three periods: The Middle Ages and Habsburg years, the Enlightenment, and from the Spanish Civil War to the present. Most are well written and contain useful bibliography. In addition, 38 pages are devoted to bibliography on German-Spanish relations and there are good onomastic and subject indices. I was particularly taken by the essays linking literary traditions (Kabbala and mysticism, Calderón and German theater, Schlegel and Cervantes, Heine, Unamuno, Neruda, etc.), and by Conrad Kent's well-illustrated essay on the Spanish Civil War as interpreted by German photographers.
