A very charming book of dog stories
The Dogs are Winning Eight to Two details my experiences with and fascination with dogs. My first experience was 25 years ago with "Frank" my first companion. The book follows my experiences with Frank, my adoption of "Mandy", a black labrador retriever mix who really needed a home, and finally I tell the stories of Pepper, Rosemary, Fritz, Raven, Sonny and Cher, Tootsie, and more. Using my imagination, and interpreting facial expressions, tail wags, and postures, the dogs in my book "talk". Some stories are happy, some are sad. All are based on actual events I've experienced.

Long Overdue
Did you know that the Germans published a story, recognisably a detective story, complete with a solution depending on ballistics evidence, thirteen years before the established landmark, Poe's 'Murders in the Rue Morgue'. No, neither did I. Until I came across this invaluable volume that not only translates that story into English for the first time, but adds five other stories of equal fascination, covering the period from 1828-1909. The German contribution to the evolution of the detective story has been too long ignored, it appears. Meticulously researched (but not over-academic), and, like most detective fiction allowing valuable insights into the social history and culture of a country, this book sets the record straight. Check it out.

A very sweet book for kids and their parents
I read this as a child and adored it. It offers a wonderful view of New York City and a fascinating history of pigeons as well! Like Charlotte's Web, it offers a touching story involving anthropomorphized animals, without being too cutesy. Check out Freddie The CAt! He's a riot! Highly recommended.

I've never seen any book like this.
This book is a collection of true stories about losses that different anonymous people have experienced. Must be read by anyone who has suffered a loss of any sort. Many of the stories are about the loss experienced when a loved one dies or gets sick. Many of the stories are written by nurses who experience loss everyday -- loss of patients and seeing patients and their families suffering. I am a nurse and cannot recommend this book more highly to other nurses. Often this part of our job is overlooked and finally it has been given the attention it deserves. What a find! I'm so glad this book was written and I hope all nurses make a point of reading it. It will help you tremendously!

A quick, absorbing, read
I haven't gotten to "The Long Road Ahead" yet, but the first novella, "Escape Hatch" was so moving and engrossing that I finished it (after an intense morning with it glued to my fingers) changed. What struck me most about the work is how it refuses to pass judgement on its characters-- no one is good or evil, but everyone is lost, everyone is stuck in a world they don't want to be in. And the passages with the retarded son were especially touching. Read this story.

captures the texture and feel of Price's south
Price's South is a must read for anyone who wants to know more about this southern fiction and non-fiction writer. Excellent as a travel guide for excursions through historic and vibrant locales. Also good for those who want to travel through reading a wonderfully written book!
Exile to Sweet Dixie: The Story of Euphemia Goldsborough, Confederate Nurse and Smuggler
Published in Paperback by Thomas Publications (1999)
Amazon base price: $18.00
Average review score:
I am the author and would like to submit my comments.
Exile to Sweet Dixie is based on the research of the extensive Goldsborough collection. In addition to the chapters of her diaries and the hospital books, there are sections on her life, the political and military oppression under which she risked her service as nurse and smuggler, her Provost Marshal file with the documents used as evidence in her trial, and her personal papers that concerned her war activities. There are seven appendices of war related text written by her contemporaries effected by her service. Subsequent to the death of Goldsborough's granddaughter, the collection has been divided among family members and will almost certainly never be viewed as a whole or be accessible to the public. I chose to present this material as an annotated transcript of a valuable primary source. It is the drama of one woman's horrific war experiences; that of having a dying soldier tied to her back all night, being strip searched in front of the soldiers while imprisoned, and the emotional, physical, and mental toll of nursing and exile. I trust the reader to form their own perceptions and draw from it what they deem important to their particular interests.

WONDERFUL!!!
Mary Manz Simon is wonderful! My son has all of these books and they are his favorite. The easier level he could read easily in first grade and the second level he could easily read in second grade. I think he likes them for several reasons: they are fun, easy, repetitive, rhyming and familiar Bible stories. These books are great for building reader confidence. When we got the 8 level two books he read them all in 2 days, and asked for more!!!! HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!!
