unexpected surprise
This book surprised me. It was nothing like what I expected it to be. It was a good book and I enjoyed reading it wich was not something i expected to be able to say. The stories were interesting and intreaging. Goerge Sand is nothing less then a literary genuis, her stories reminded me of when I was younger. In her Story "What Flowers Say" I could definitly identify with the young girl since when I was that age I too wondered what the flowers talked about when I wasn't there. I would recomend this book to people of all ages it is simply a great book, writen by a truly awesome writer.

TROLLOPE FANS - DON'T OVERLOOK THIS ONE!
I RATE THIS A 5 STAR BOOK. AS USUAL, TROLLOPE WRITES SO WELL AND HOLDS YOUR ATTENTION FROM BEGINNING TO END.

THIS IS THE TALE OF 2 MEN IN LOVE WITH THE SAME WOMAN. THE FORTUNES OF THESE 2 MEN CONSTANTLY SHIFT THROUGHOUT THE STORY DUE TO A FAMILY INHERITANCE QUESTION - WHICH FORMS THE CENTRAL MYSTERY OF THE BOOK. AND AS THEIR FORTUNES CHANGE, THE MOTHER OF THE WOMAN WHOM BOTH LOVE, CONTINUES TO INTEFERE AND ATTEMPT TO SELL HER DAUGHTER'S HEART TO THE RICHEST BIDDER.

I'VE READ A LOT OF TROLLOPE, AND I WOULD RATE THIS ONE OF HIS FINEST. THE ONLY PART OF THE BOOK THAT I FOUND NOT THAT INTERESTING, WAS THE HISTORY PERTAINING TO THE GREAT IRISH FAMINE.NEVERTHELESS, IF YOU LIKE TROLLOPE, DO READ THIS ONE!

A Wrong Turn Leads to a Dead End
James Lange is a practicing lawyer (drunk driving and accident cases) and a former investigator. Katherine DeWitt is a writer and editor. They claim other writers on this topic lacked legal knowledge and knew nothing of forensic science (p.ix). The writers were jurors who applied common sense and general knowledge to a problem. The authors research led them to a theory previously buried.

Joe Kennedy Sr. was not a common bootlegger during Prohibition (p.3); he made another fortune by holding import licenses for Scotch whiskies. He had made several fortunes in banking, shipbuilding, and stock brokering earlier. Like some other bankers, he supported FDR in 1932 and was given the Ambassadorship to Great Britain. Kennedy's defeatist attitude killed his political career, but his sons were ready to be all they could be. Pages 6-8 summarize Ted Kennedy's life. Ted did well as a Senator; he was a team player. Like most Senators and Congressmen, he worked in his car while someone else drove. Ted relied on other people's talents (p.10). Chapter 2 tells of Mary Jo Kopechne. No one has ever proven any irregularities in her life (p.18). The July 1969 party was at Chappaquiddick so Teddy couldn't miss it (p.20). Mary Jo didn't feel well and asked Ted to drive her to her motel. Ted made a wrong turn and ended up on the wooden bridge.

After Ted returned to Hyannis Port he was examined by a doctor (p.47). The retrograde amnesia and current confusion was diagnosed as a concussion, acute cervical strain. Ted still walked around in a daze on Monday (p.51). Ted and Joan attended Mary Jo's funeral on Tuesday. On Friday Ted plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident. Ted's candidacy for a higher office was the other victim of this accident.

Chapter 5 discusses various theories about this event. Retrograde amnesia always occurs with a concussion, and explains anyone's loss of memory (p.73). Page 117 suggests they did not report the accident immediately because of Ted's confused mental state. A tearful, emotional Ted would have ended his career. This is as good a theory as any (p.123), and avoids multiplying suppositions. Chapter 7 discusses the rumors of Ted's guilt. There was nothing wrong with a closed inquest because Mass. always did it that way (p.159). This can prevent prejudicial pre-trial publicity. Pages 160-2 explain why Ted Kennedy did NOT "get away with it".

Ted Kennedy has continued to get re-elected Senator, but has no chance for higher office. This is described as due to a "flaw in judgment". Would a drunkard and adulterer make a good President? The authors imply "no" but the history books (or the present?) suggest at least a "maybe". They ask if Nixon deserved to be hounded out of office for a "third-rate burglary" (p.166)? Yes, if "Watergate" was a cover story for the attempted assassination of George Wallace.

Edgartown was the locale for filming "Jaws" in 1974. Did the Dyke Bridge appear in a background shot of the pond? Martha's Vineyard was in the news again in 1999 when JFK Jr, his wife, and sister-in-law perished in a plane crash. We later found out JFK Jr intended to get elected Senator of NY.

A Child's Story of Thanksgiving
I looked over dozens of Thanksgiving books at the bookstore to find one that told the story of Thanksgiving . I thought this one was one of the two best I saw. The story was told simply, but also describing new words well. It starts with why people chose to leave England, the hardships they faced here, how the Indians helped the newcomers, and how the first Thanksgiving came about. What I thought really added to this story was that it described how we celebrate Thanksgiving today, and things we can do to show our thanks by helping others. That was one thing I was really looking for in a Thanksgiving book. I wanted my 5 year old to understand better why we do things for others during the holidays, and throughout the year. This may be a little long for too young kids, but looks great for 4 and older. Hope you enjoy it too.

Inclusive for Kids
I found this book to be a very good Bible book for kids of any age. Although it is primarily geared for older school age kids, younger kids can also enjoy the stories and the pictures. It is a great resource for getting kids familiar with the Bible - it's contents and wording. I will enjoy reading these stories to my kids for years to come. I also love that it is in a daily format, this really helps with daily devotions.

Great book to introduce children to the prose of Dickens
Recently I had to spend a couple of months camping with my 8 year old daughter away from home and mom. We enjoyed reading and even rereading some of the stories from this book containing Ten children from ten different Dickens tales -- including Tiny Tim, David Copperfield, and Oliver Twist. They are featured in a generously illustrated colorful compendium. While the depictions of the children's lives are true to the originals, abridgement may infact encourage the young reader to read the original when they grow up. My daughter could empathise with homeless, motherless Dickensian kids, however she could not understand what is the big deal about Oliver asking for more if he is still hungry ! This tells us how far we have come in terms of feeding our kids well (if not good homes and both parents) since Dickens, at least in the developed countries. In one sentence this book was a nice trailer to the poignant prose of Dickens to be read aloud as well as read by curious children themselves.
