Widening the lens of art history
Ann Eden Gibson's revelatory book takes a second look at American art history of the mid-to-late 20th century and makes a strong case for a reexamination of artists whose work has been excluded. The importance of artists such as Norman Lewis, Beauford Delany, Hale Woodruff, Charles Alston, Alice Trumbull Mason, Michael West and many others has been marginalized because they were African-American or women or gay or Asian-American. How and why this happened is the subject of Ms. Gibson's clear-eyed and well-reasoned analysis. She writes of social, philosophical, psychological and historical matters which combined to create this widespread rejection in the mainstream art world.

One interesting area of discussion, for example, was the natural ability and inclination of the Outsider to perceive aspects of life in more than one way. This plurality, with its inherent sense of irony and a wider perspective, was the antithesis of the Abstract Expressionists' determined formula for success - to find a style and stick to it. Another fertile subject is that of the Hero, or heroic rebel, as epitomized by Jackson Pollock and idolized by most of the artists within the fold. This uniquely masculine, heterosexual and yes, narrow point of view catapulted certain artists into the limelight and pushed others with a more feminine or delicate or vulnerable approach to the sidelines.

These and other arguments are all beautifully documented by Gibson, and a generous number of color, as well as black-and-white illustrations demonstrate the content and strength of the work of many of these unjustly neglected artists. This probing volume raises as many questions as it answers. Hopefully, this will be only the beginning of a much-needed reassessment of the history of recent American art.

A must read; Dr. Gibson opens our eyes to so many overlooked
In Other Politics, Ann Gibson has made me rethink all of what I thought I knew about abstract expressionism. From the

My work on this book!
Hello,
My name is Scott Neely and I liked the spot illustrations that I drew for this book. It has an X-Files feel to it and is a great supplement to the role-playing game. Enjoy!

Under the Aegis
The Conspiracy X rpg is one of the coolest around, and the Aegis organisation definitely needed a source book of its own. And here it is. It has loads more stuff on Aegis, including some cool new skils 'n professions. The stuff on Aegis rocks, and the advice on operations and tactics has helped my players get further into character. All in all, an invaluable addition to any Con X player's/GM's library.

Garden Addict? Then This is For You!
This book took me away to a wonderful place in my mind and gave me the wonderful feeling that you only get on a lovely spring day when spirits rise to greet the day. The books title says it all. If winter dull-drums are getting you down, then this is the book to read.

Delightful read!
Pat Welsh has skillfully blended memoir and gardening advice, making for extremely interesting and helpful reading. I read it first in 1996 (when it first hit the book stores) and am now enjoying it for the second time.

Modern Society versus Man
Deborah Cadbury has managed to convey an incredible amount of information in a useful, logical way. Pesticides, toxins, estrogens, and many chemicals used in every day products like food containers are tied to reproductive disorders like endometriosis, uterine cancer, testicular cancer, breast cancer, and infertility. I could not stop reading this book. Many of the points made are so obvious that I have often wondered who is hiding the information form society linking the source of toxins to the health effects. Why is it that government and industry value money over human life? I assume that most people are too ignorant or complacent to act to protect their health by not driving cars (or limiting use), eating organic foods, demanding more wildlife areas, conserving energy and using renewable sources instead of building more power plants, and being informed as to health risks and causes. The only thing I would have liked to see in this book is detailed resource information. Specifically, what companies use these chemicals, where they are known to be in the environment and at what levels, cancer rates by area, etc. - where do we go to get this information.

Altering Eden - Our Future at Risk
This is a very important book. It is based on an 'Emmy' award winning BBC TV programme. Scientists around the world are finding alarming changes in human reproduction and health. There is strong evidence that sperm counts have fallen dramatically. Testicular, prostate, and breast cancer are on the rise. Different animal species are even showing signs of 'feminization' or 'changing sex,' the males actually producing eggs like females. According to scientific evidence compiled worldwide, the prime suspect in these worrying findings is the increased exposure to chemicals that can mimic the female hormone estrogen and other hormones. Indeed, man-made chemicals like DDT, PCB and other hormone disrupters have become soaked into our environment from their use in countless modern products, from plastics to pesticides. Only now is the full impact of their extensive use coming to light. Believed responsible for genital abnormalities and cancers across a wide range of species, these hormone disrupting chemicals may pose a threat not only to our human potential, but to our very survival. Through extensive interviews with fertility experts and scientists world wide as well as members of the chemical industry, Deborah Cadbury provides a balanced, cogent, compelling argument that propels us toward a disturbing conclusion. In the spirit of Rachel Carson's groundbreaking work, Silent Spring, Cadbury's well researched, even handed analysis of these findings is a startling wake-up call to the far reaching consequences of widespread environmental pollution.

Understanding
Thomas Cleary has done us a great service by translating and/or collecting these works. He is a man of understanding and insight and these three volumes will threaten to make any reader who takes them seriously the same.

Any person who deals with anybody in any way should endeavor to grasp these fine works of wisdom. Not to do so is a mistake. As Confucius said, "If a mistake is not corrected, that is called a mistake."

Great reading for anybody interested in leadership
Anyone interested in learning about leadership should go back to the classics. Clearly has done a great job putting together a collection of the most influencial eastern classics in three volumes. The five classics included in this volume present crucial aspects of human development and empowerment. The most insighful readings in my opinion are thunder in the Sky and The Book of the Five Rings. The first one talks about the skills and behavior of succesful leaders, while the second one deals with the art of confrontation and victory. Clearly's comments are very good in providing insights about the reading. My last recommendation is to start with the first volume: The Art of War by Sun Tzu.

the tragic encounter of two worlds beautifully conveyed
This book is a gem. The sad results of the encounter of the Spanish with the indiginous population of the Caribbean Islands is presented objectively and the few accounts of the Tiano Peoples' own words are effectively used to hint at who these early victims of European expansion really were. The use of modern photos and historic illustrations opens up the real lost world where these events unfolded and every illustration adds to and interacts with the text. The result is both a good read and a rigerous scholarly introduction to the foundations of the American experiance. This is the first work of its kind that interperts the historic documents as understood by an island inhabitant who understands details the first explorer encountered from personal experiance.

Columbus' voyages come to life!
History books on the voyages of Columbus can only take you so far -- until now. This book really ties the historical details together with the drama and adventure that the original explorers must have felt. It is impossible to put this book down -- for the reader interested in history or for the person seeking an adventure.

Not a random walk.....
...but a coherent and organized text on diffusion.

This is a complete text on the subject of diffusion. Similar to Shewmon's original "Diffusion in Solids", but Glicksman is more complete and modern. Glicksman is worth purchasing even if you already own Shewmon.

Finally, a complete explanation...
I have found that mathematically intensive books frequently leave out many of the steps that are critical to a complete understanding of the fundamental equations. Diffusion in Solids does a wonderful job of taking you from start to finish in each problem presented. It is a complete tome worth every dollar spent. Thanks Marty!

Extinctions and evolution
This book is very interesting when it comes to tell your children about God, creation and fall. The Dinosaurs just became extinct, just like many other species, but that has nothing to do with particles to people evolution. My little daughter just loved it. I hope she will become a zealous creationist. Many people think that evolutionism is perfectly compatible with Bible teachings. The fact is that there are very good theological and scientific reasons that prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that evolution never happened and the whole concept in itself is incompatible with Bible teachings on topics such as creation, fall, curse, flood, Babel, dispersion, the emergence of civilitations, the alliance with Israel, the promise of a saviour, the life, death and ressurrection of Jesus Christ, redemption and restoration.

Dinosaurs Of Eden
An excellent comprehensive look at the Dinosaurs in the Garden of Eden. If reading alone, I recommend age 8 and up. But, if you intend to read it to your child, you can start as early as age 3 and simplify the information to customize to your childs age. An absolute MUST HAVE for a christian parent of a child who loves dinosaurs!

We never did this stuff at Girl Scout camp...
If you've ever wondered what a women's music festival is all about, who goes and what really happens there, then this book is a must. With wonderfully visual anecdotes, quotes and stories from performers, festi-goers, producers and techies, as well as the histories of festivals themselves, "Eden Built By Eves" will take you on the journey without having to pack up the car! Whether you're a "festie-virgin" and have never been, or a seasoned veteran of the phenomena that is this culture, this book will make you wish you had planned to take the Summer off just so that you could attend each festival described. Amid the history and politics, controversies and laughter, sometimes painful truths and hilarious stories, you'll meet the women of the festival world who have helped to create this amazing culture. Buy this book and be prepared to stay up late reading it. You'll be very glad you did!

An articulate, "you-are-there" account of women's festivals.
As a prolific journal-writer and a "festiegoer" for eleven years, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. It more than lived up to my expectations. Page by page, the experiences came back--I reminisced with hilarity and with tears as memories of experiences at Michigan and Bloomington came flowing back. The names are all here--the humor, the in-jokes, the photographs, the cartoons, the controversies...and most of all, a strong sense of one's tribe finally being acknowledged and honored. I related to the author when she described her many hours of sitting unobtrusively through concerts, chronicling her impressions in her journal - insights and observations that would later make up this treasure of a book. It brought back fond memories of sitting on my tarp during Acoustic Stage at Michigan, blank book on my lap. What an affirmation! What a treasure! Four stars for Bonnie Morris. I not only ordered this book for myself, but for the public library where I work, and I hope it will be widely read.
