Savannah Armchair Tour
Finally, a cd-rom that offers useful information for travelers and others interested in Savannah. As a satisfied owner of the Charleston Armchair tour, I was thrilled to find that other historic cities are also available in this quality product. With the included maps, you can choose any building in the historic district and get several pictures with information about architecture, history, and stories of the building. I especially enjoyed the 'front door' and 'gardens, squares, and parks' tours. The photography is beautiful and includes a number of panoramic 360 degree pictures. I can't wait to revisit Savannah again now that I know what to look for.

Urban Horror In Aid Of Homelessness
First, I should come clean, my name is Steve Savile and I edited this anthology of very different dark tales. I just wanted to add something that might not be obvious from the information here, namely, that everyone involved in this project has agreed to donate their commissions and royalties to SHELTER, a chairty aimed at feeding and housing the homeless. It has taken nearly three years to get this project, entitled REDBRICK EDEN in the UK, on the streets. Within the pages are original stories by big names in UK horror, like Stephen Laws, Mark Morris, Christopher Fowler, Mark Chadbourn, Simon Clark, Ramsey Campbell, Kim Newman and others. Twenty fantastic stories in all. Horror with a heart. That's all I have to say, but I am happy to answer questions and correspond with interested parties.

A well-done introduction to the Endurance epic
This book is a very well-written and illustrated introduction to the epic story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance in their struggle to survive the loss of their ship in the ice. If you know a child who feels put-upon because they don't have the latest model gaming system or the right type of monsters in their card decks, get them to read this, and perhaps it will prove a useful antidote to the ennervating softness of "modern" civilization.

The mid point of a classic series
There is not a single Mongo book that can be given a rank of less than 4 stars, and this one is no exception. In fact , it is one of the finest of the series. For those of you who have never read one of the Mongo books do not read this one first. In fact, it is unwise to read them in any manner except in the order in which they were written. This novel continues to develop the wonderful characters that Mr. Chesbro introduced with " The Shadow of a Broken Man".The pace , as always, is fast, and our heroes will go through much pain before the end of the tale is written. Do yourself a favour and get "Shadow" and read it. Whodunnit, whoizzeee, mystery, fantasy, action, adventure, and one of the most extraordinary characters introduced in modern fiction (no exaggeration). If you enjoy it, get the other books in the series and read them in order. As much as you'll enjoy this book on its own, when read after following the series through to this point it is that much better a book. I'd rank it a 4.7 stars if read on its own and a 5 star book when read as part of the series.

More Novels for Jane Austen Fans
These two novels read like lost manuscripts of Jane Austen's. They are the stories of two early 19th century romances -- one involving an already-married couple, the other involving a pair of potential mates -- that show the same level of sophisticated observation of human nature that Austen aficionados love. But, you haven't re-read them over and over, unlike "Pride and Prejudice", "Emma", or "Sense and Sensibility". They are a must for any Austen-holic
Sondheim on Music: Minor Details and Major Decisions

For anyone who wants more insight on Sondheim
This was a beautiful book, capturing every reason why Sondheim's music is so brilliant. This series of interviews explores several of his most celebrated works, and goes into everything from music theory, to lyric phrasing, to lyric choices, to what inspired him. If you really want to know what goes on in his head while he is composing his masterpieces then buy this book! Though it concentrates heavily on musical theory and sondheim's pieces from a composer's point of view, you do not need to be an expert in music theory to appreciate this book, because it is filled with exciting tidbits of everything you would ever want to know about his pieces. You also really get to know the man behind the music, and you get to see what his original manuscripts looked like! This is an exciting read for a Sondheim fan (or someone curious about what the big fuss is over him)...you will not be dissapointed!
Sondheim on Music: Minor Details and Major Decisions
This book gives us a view within the process of Stephen Sondheim as a creative genius. At the same time it is encouraging because he takes us into glimpses in his creations: methods, favorites, changes, mistakes and growth that illustrate how he actualized his dreams into reality. For anyone that has ever considered writing for an audience with a level that takes into consideration all the nuances of color, texture, overt and underlying meaning, this book is a must read. It is followed with lists of suggested material for review based on the personal influence they had for Sondheim.

Sensational example of incompetentcy in corporate America
For everyone that has ever been in top management with a large corporation, and had to endure the pains of compromise for the sole purpose of holding on to a job. For many, the pain experienced in observing "managerial masturbation" becomes too great and resignation is the only way out. Apparently this author was able to "grin and bear it". For that, and this most interesting "actual" interpretation,
we recommend this reading to everyone that has ever worked, or is working for someone else.

The best historical novel about early Barbados History ever!
Am suprised that this book is not still in print. It got excellent reviews when published back in 1985 in the US and UK. Tells the story of a spoiled young woman who marries a older Bajan planter in 1664 and goes with him to his plantation. Slave revolts, hurricanes, Dutch naval attack plus a steaming love story makes this a superby story, one also carefully researched.

Entertaining and Intriguing American History
I loved Star-Spangled Eden. This well researched history reads like a historical romance. Simmons covers 50 of the most critical years of American History, 1830-1850, through the eyes of eight British men and women who came here, traveled widely, and had marvelous adventures. Each traveler plugs into a major theme of the era when the country developed from raw frontier to a modern industrial state and provides a unique perspective on important events of this period - the Southern slavery system, the Civil War, the exploration and settlement of the West, etc.
My favorite chapter is the last one on Oscar Wilde's witty eleven-month cross-country American tour. To quote the author, "Here was the leading British snob, an effete poseur of highly refined sensibilities, lecturing American audiences from Boston to Leadville on the principles of aesthetics and becoming a popular celebrity in the process. Wilde found himself growing inordinately fond of Americans. A less unlikely love match could scarcely be imagined."
Simmons writes great history-of-travel books. I first discovered him with Castaway in Paradise: The Incredible Adventures of True-Life Robinson Crusoes. I recommend these books to anyone looking for a great read that's based on fact.
