West of Eden: The End of Innocence at Apple Computer
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (1989)
Author: Frank Rose
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Best of the Apple Histories
This is a well written book that expertly envisions the story of Apple's early years. Rose provides an in-depth look at the people involved and draws out the fascinating stories that surround Apple's early existence. This is by far the most accessible and enjoyable account of Apple's founding. The only problem is that it was written in the early '90's and doesn't reach the amazingly entertaining last few years the company has gone through. If only Rose would write a sequel...

Absolutely brilliant
Incredibly fascinating book that takes you on an intense and vivid tour of how Apple was started and what went on behind the scenes. Highly readable and very tough to put down.

Fascinating read
West of Eden reads like a novel which makes me wonder if it's all true. After having it gather dust on my shelves for years I finally decided to read it and it's fascinating. I had a hard time tearing myself away in order to get my final progamming assignment done. Whether it's all fact or not one thing's for sure: now that Steve Jobs has been back at Apple for a while I hope Mr. Rose writes a followup!

The Women of Eden

A fresh perspective on an old myth!
Pyatt is a master storyteller; she brings the ancient legend of Cain and Abel to life in a tasteful and colorful fashion that would make any writer or feminist proud. Her expert use of setting and brilliant characters help to make this one of the best books I've ever read. I recommend it to anyone who loves a good story!

A New Look at an Old Myth
"The Women of Eden" brings a new myth to life in a fascinating
story. The introduction sets the scene in the BC era; told with a clash of cultures and religion that in many ways has persisted to this day, especially in the Middle East. The story brings a new look to an old biblical myth, one that could bring an end to polarities between men and women as well as ending of violence and the beginning of harmony among nations.

Other thoughts on Bible stories
This is feminist biblical criticism through story. The Bible is originally oral history and told from the patriarchal society's POV. Now women are beginning to tell another story and celebrate goddess/women's spirituality. Great book! Reminiscent of The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.

All A Man Can Do (Trouble In Eden)

Author: Virginia Kantra
Amazon base price: $4.75

Danger, intrigue and sizzle! -- Very highly recommended
Wounded after intervening in a student's life, Faye Harper retreats to a childhood haunt to find respite. Rather than the expected peace, however, she quickly finds herself in the midst of a criminal investigation. Detective Aleksy Denko, also from Chicago, unofficially seeks answers in arms deal gone wrong that left a former partner dead.

Aleksy underestimates Faye's resilience, viewing her as a cream puff. Cute like Faye is not his type, although she can make him understand its appeal. What he really needs is a cover, and Faye can provide it. Unfortunately, Faye has to get involved with anything that involves risk. Too bad her own actions have already put her in danger.

A faced paced, heart pounding read, ALL A MAN CAN ASK provides unexpected twists that makes author Virginia Kantra's novels a must read. Unexpected courage and surprising compassion bring these characters vividly alive, even as drug addicted teens, stretchy bras, and romantic entanglement also intriguing elements that prove these character's all too human flaws. Indeed, the fast paced plot and the strong characterizations are nicely balanced, resulting in a tale that is at once deadly yet richly balanced by powerful emotions and physical attraction. ALL A MAN CAN DO comes very highly recommended.

All I Could Do... was turn the pages until I hit the end!
Jarek Denko gave up his big city job as a detective and took a job as a chief of police in a small town for his daughter's sake. But big crime follows him to town and Jarek has a criminal to catch.

Tess DeLucca's brother might be a suspect, but she knows he's innocent. As she tries to not only report on the story, but protect her brother, she finds hereself drawn to the new chief. He's not what she expected...and falling in love with him wasn't what she expected either.

Jarek and Tess work together to catch their criminal, even as they see just where their feelings will take them.

Virginia Kantra writes a rich, emotionally packed story!

Superb romantic tension -- Highly recommended
Jarek Denko gave up the big city streets to become a police chief in the backwater town of Eden. He hopes the small community can fill whatever is missing from his daughter's life. Then a red light assault casts suspicion on his department, and Jarek does not know who he can trust. His controlled demeanor has earned him the nickname Ice Man, but reporter Tess DeLucca easily sparks an inconvenient attraction. Worse, his best suspect happens to be her brother. Moreover,

Tess does not believe in the police keeping secrets and he does not believe in anyone getting in the way of his investigation. Tess questions why Jarek refuses to talk about his failed marriage or young daughter. Tess does not do cops, and she does not do families. She already raised her brother Mark, who is often irresponsible, unreliable and infuriating. For years she cared for her alcoholic mother as well. She does not need another family to add to her responsibilities. Unfortunately, Jarek's kisses can make her shudder and melt, causing her to forget her plan to remain dispassionate, objective and in control.

Author Virginia Kantra begins her miniseries Trouble in Eden with ALL A MAN CAN DO. While they might not have much else in common, Jarek and Tess share a profound need to protect their personal lives. I admit to thoroughly enjoying this mature hero and heroine who struggle with the emotional baggage that comes with age. Indeed, author Kantra deftly captures the deepest and most intense emotions with grace, exposing the most profound moments of living with compassion and intensity. Despite the gravity of personal challenges, however, the beauty of the growing romance between Jarek and Tess adds a sparkling hope and joy to Kantra's novel that makes these characters uniquely memorable. Add a suspenseful plot and the result is a highly entertaining read.

Dorothy Eden is a Master of Suspense
When the heroine attempts to be another person, she works hard to live a life that many of us would enjoy. However, as often happens with even the best plans, things often occur that get our very likable heroine in trouble. Her pretended identity was not planned, but when the ship she is traveling on as a maid sinks, she is thought to be the daughter of a well-to-do family. She is the maid, and then she has to fight to keep her true identity a secret as she builds a life that truly has love and worth as its foundation. Its ending is excellent. I enjoyed every minute of the story, even though there were times I found myself very nervous for her well-being. Ms. Eden really makes us care for the characters she so skillfully creates.

LUSITANIA LOVE STORY
THE LUSITANIA PLAYS IMPORTANT HAND IN THE FATES OF A MISTRESS AND HER LOOK ALIKE MAID. THE MEMORY OF THE SINKING PROPELS THE STORY ALONG TO THE VERY END.

the book is excellent.
a girl and her maid embark on the last voyage of the Lusitania. There lies the opportunity for the maid, harriet to change her life for the better. If you are a fan of ship disasters, such as the Titanic or the Lusitania, this is a book you will read from start to finish.

A must read
Classic characters and plot. More of how the more things change the more they stay the same.

Flawed but powerful
This is a harsh, clear, brilliant book. There are flaws - it isn't a perfect book - but the arid setting and brutal beauty of the land and people are fiercely and wonderfully drawn. It is the characters that drive the passions of the book - characters that are so deeply written you come back to many modern bestsellers with a sense of something missing - where are the PEOPLE? This is an intense, haunting read that will stay with you.

Come and see for yourself
It was gewtting towards the end of my senior year in high school. My teacher assighed this very thick book to read. Her reason, she said, was this is the only book that a student with senioritis would take to the beach. I quickly agreed with her. I just always wanted to know what the dominatrix Cathy/Kate was going to do next. But the other characters are just as fascinating. Cal and Aron are as different as night and day. Tom and Dessie Hamilton are brother and sister who are toucingly close. To make a long story short, this is a book that I would definitely recommend to anyone

Amazing!
Praise the Lord!

Finally a message that makes sense when researched and put to the scriptural test! Eden To Armageddon The Conflict is truly the most amazing, compelling and the most powerful book I have ever read next to the Bible. It is so different but at the same time makes more sense than any other book concerning the book of Revelations and end times than any other I have read. So refreshing to see an Author who understands things which where shown to him by GOD and the Holy Spirit, in the physical and the Spiritual sense.

Praise GOD its about time someone saw the truth!!!!!

Intriguing
This book was quite fascinating. I have an interest in this subject and wanted some practical insight and understanding of biblical prophecies. This book helps the reader put religious doctrines into perspective and gives one a clearer understanding of bible prophecy. The doctrinal interpretation of the prophecies were scripturally and contextually authenticated. Some of the text was dry but the overall perspective of the author was captivating enough to keep one's interest piqued. I found the information provided in this book much more logical and less biblically contradictive than many of the other topic studies I have read. This is definitely a thumbs up.

Outstanding
I loved this book. It's totally different from John Dollar (which I also loved); reminded me somewhat of a Nick Hornby read. Funny, sad, and passionate. Wiggins' prose is exquisite.

A great book
See my review under the paperback edition. Though for the price differential, the harcover edition is a bargain

A writer of the highest caliber takes on love & politics
This is the best book I have read this year. Stylistically brilliant, scintillant, it searches into the nature of love and the obsessions of of eros -- not in daily life, but in life on the edge, life where politics, catastrophe, and the twentieth century converge. Wiggins' protagonist is a journalist -- male -- who covers international events of major magnitude; set alternately in Africa, at the (falling)Berlin wall, and in 'liberated' Eastern Europe, the book is a serious inquiry intot he relations between eros and ethos. The characters are riveting, the settings full of the excitement and confusion of the late twentieth centurty -- and the prose, the prose is a continual joy. Only a slight falling off at the end -- the book gets into so much that it is tough for Wiggins to extract herself and the reader from the fullness -- mars what is otherwise a wondrous book for our times.

In the Electric Eden: Stories

excellent collection of short stories
I normally don't write reviews, but Mr. Arvin's book of stories really struck a nerve for me. His stories, although sometimes a little dark, are unforgettable. His ability to blend historical facts with strange details makes you believe that these stories actually happened. I laughed out loud when I read "Two Thousand Germans in Frankenmuth"....

A Great Debut
Stewart O'Nan is right to compare Arvin's work to early TC Boyle. There is a searching intelligence behind these stories, a concern for where "progress" takes people. I especially enjoyed the title story and 'Commemorating.' 'Take Your Child to Work' is heartbreaking. 'Telescope' is probably the most cool short-short I've read in years. It's an impressive collection.

Brilliant!
I read a lot of story collections, and few charm me as much as this. Arvin has several unforgettably delightful stories in the collection. "Take Your Child To Work Day," is hilarious and at the same time sad, the story of a marriage on the rocks and the strange daughter caught in the middle. Its about taking one's inner child to work, or putting ones real child to work, or...it's very smart. All a story should be.
In The Electric Eden is an intriguing blend of history, authoritative ideas regarding engineering, and the finer details of emotional lives.
As a child raised in Michigan myself--with all those trips to the former home of Henry Ford and the reconstructed Edison lab--I can't help but respond to this lovely mix of exploring the history of technology and the geography of human emotion.

Wonderful account of an African Safari
This is an excellent example of what it is like at the game reserve. My wife and I spent 10 days at Malamala, and this book brought back all of the memorable experiences we had in the bush. We spent some time with Jamie while we were there and he is a true artist with a camera, as well as an enjoyable dinner companion.

The photos are wonderful and the discriptions are endearing.
My family and I just returned from a photographic safari on the MalaMala game reserve. We purchased the book from the onsite gift store as it represented so many wonderful memories of our adventure in South Africa. Jamie Thom is a wonderful guide and truely has a wonderful gift for photographing these many amazing animals. We highly recommend this photographic work of art to all who love nature.

Almost Like Being There!
This is a breathtakingly beautiful view of the animals of the South African Lowveld. Ms. Lumry and Mr. Thom have captured the unique experience of an African Safari with a stunning collection of photos that make you feel like you could reach out and touch the animals. If you're thinking about an African Safari or want to relive the thrill of one you've taken, this is a "must have" book.

Pitcairn Island: Life and Death in Eden
Published in Hardcover by Ashgate Publishing Company (1997)
Author: Trevor Lummis
Amazon base price: $74.95
Average review score:

After the movies finish
Funnily enough the really interesting story of the Bounty begins after most movies have 'faded into the sunset' and the credits start to roll. This is what Lummis has picked up - and this book "Pitcairn Island, Life and Death in Eden" is the story of just that. What happened to the Bounty mutineers. It is an awful lot more interesting, bloodthirsty and downright fascinating than the story of the Bounty mutiny itself.

Lummis seems to have done his research too. He has tracked down all the accounts available, and compared them with one another. He clearly points out the strengths and weaknesses in each account and how he has reached his own conclusions about the actual story. In this way he makes his deductions, and the story far more transparent for us - and makes it all the more believable.

As most people know the mutiny on the bounty as about the uprising of a group of sailors led by acting Lieutenant, Fletcher Christian against their captain, Bligh. Lummis discusses the mutiny and the events which lead up to it, putting it perspective of the times and the problems which Bligh had had to deal with before hand (especially through the incompetency of the admiralty in delaying his sailing to Tahiti in the first place.) There is also a brief history of the English encounters in Tahiti prior to the arrival of the Bounty.

The most interesting part is really what happened to the Bounty muntineers once they sailed away from the Bligh. Some went reluctantly and stayed in Tahiti when the Bounty returned there. However Christian and a few others knew that they would never be safe unless they stayed out of range of the long arm of the British Navy. They therefore found the most remote island possible - Pitcairn - and settled there.

Then followed almost 20 years in which there was no contact with the outside world, just a handful of bounty mutineers, 6 tahitian men and a handful of Tahitian women. At the end of those 20 years just one of the men was left, John Adams. His story of what happened to the other men was at first straightforward. However as more people visited the Island his story started to become more complicated and even contradicted itself. It seemed that there must have been at least one catastrophic massacre of some sort. Yet they were all living in this peaceful and ideal society.

Lummis gleans the truth of the fate of the men of Pitcairn through the various accounts Adam's gave, as well as accounts given by one of the women, Jenny, and one of the eldest sons after Adam's died. In fact it seemed that Adam's himself had triggered the entire debacle. This I found the most fascinating part of the book - the careful unravelling of various stories by comparing them with others, and with logical progression.

Lummis completes the book with the fate of the islanders up until recent years. The gradual deterioration of the island, the move to Norfolk and the return of some of them to Pitcairn.

This book is well worth reading if you enjoy the story of the mutineers. It is also an interesting insight into pre-European Pacific culture, and it proves to be a darn good mystery as well....

"Lord of the Flies" in bloody reality.
Most readers would have a reasonably good knowledge of the events that took place on HMS Bounty in 1789 and they might even know the details of why the Bounty sailed and what happened to Bligh after he and those of the crew that didn't mutiny were set adrift in the Bounty's long boat. I would guess however that only a handful of people anywhere in the world would have an idea of what happened to the mutineers after they landed on Pitcairn and burnt their only means of escape-the Bounty herself. Trevor Lummis has done a tremendous job of research by stringing together all the odd bits of scattered information in order to present the whole bloody, sordid story of the events that ultimately left only one male alive on the island plus a number of Polynesian women who were part of the original group. What happened to the mutineers and the Polynesian men that went with them to Pitcairn is the subject of this book and what an extraordinary story it is! Hollywood missed it by building a movie around the mutiny-they should have filmed the story of the events after the mutiny. Anybody with even a miniscule curiosity about the incidents on Pitcairn owe it to themselves to savor this wonderfuly readable story.

Pitcairn Island: Life and Death in Eden
Excellent, exciting story of what happened AFTER the Mutiny on the Bounty. The author, using original source material, did extraordinary detective work to draw conclusions from limited sources about how the mutineers ended up slaughtering one another, as well as a few sympathetic natives who escaped with them to the miniscule island of Pitcairn--not even on the map at that time. Only one of the original white men survived (having killed or watched the killing of all the others).

It's a sordid story of swapping "wives," drunkenness on home brew, murder, rape and the survival of the fittest--here the most devious and cunning. That did not include the famous Mr. Christian who was among the first to go. Gripping story and a good read.
