a must have for those seeking the truth
This book is a must-have for anyone interested in their health. It is comprehensive without being overwhelming or confusing. It is plainly written and will answer any question regarding diet and nutrition that you may have. It also contains useful information on herbs and many formulations you can make at home. I have countless nutrition and herbal books in my library, yet this is the one I reach for the most.

A Beat-up, well-used book around our house
This is such a good book for the average person using herbs. The author perfected these treatments on actual humans and the cross reference aspect of this book is great. The index is great, too. There is a wealth of info about herbals and herbal treatments. Many old treatments like hot packs, etc, I have tried and found to work brilliantly. This book truly is a gem. It's a book of work and dedication and knowledge. Highly, highly recommened, and a must-have if you use herbs. Good price, too. Enjoy.

First written in 1939 and ahead of its time
Back to Eden is a classic whole-foods, natural health book that was written in 1939. Jethro Kloss ran santitaria (we'd probably call them spas or detox centers today) in Wisconsin and Minnesota. He lectured, wrote and founded a whole-foods manufacturing company in Tennessee.

If you read Back to Eden, you'll see that Jethro Kloss was way ahead of his time. He advocated a diet high in fruits, vegetables and grains and with minimal meat, caffeine, fat and sugars. Some of his treatments will seem dated (fomentations or hot packs) but some are still in use in holistic healing centers around the world today. He also recommended living a spiritually healthy life, realizing again that health comes from a totally integrated lifestyle, where body, mind and spirit are in harmony.

This is a great book to have if you like reading Dr. Weil, Deepak Chopra or other current popular health authors. It gives perspective into health ideas that have stood the test of time. The home remedies are helpful, too. This is still a great reference for home health and has many good recipes for salads, soups and breads.

Power in Memory
This book is a wonderful tapestry of history and memory that makes for a warm, enjoyable read, despite its message: what is lost. From Native American Matapeake Indians to Baltimore's great fire, and the "second" Bay Bridge construction, the history reveals the natural resources, economy, and community values of early Kent Island, and its present reality of tract housing, expressways, and strip malls. Freedman's microcosm of Kent Island is a macro for what's happening all over the U.S. Character and charm are no more. We live in vinyl boxes and shop the same chains. As you drive around your town, have you ever really looked to see how ugly most of the landscape is? Try it. The book's images are quite extraordinary though. The author's memories and cherished photos of family and place possess an honesty that reached out for my own distinct early memories, and begged me to appreciate them. She also reinforced my appetite for finding value and beauty in simple things and ways that deserve human note and care. A few of my favorite parts of the book: Recipes Served on the Porch, My Mother's Coat, and the twelve days of Christmas. This book was personally enriching for me, and it's a wake-up call for those of us who've known a finer quality of life. We do know better. Janet Freedman came right out and said it.

History and memory merge in this absorbing book
Janet Freedman seamlessly blends history and personal remembrances in this charming account of family and place. Her grandmother's farm and the surrounding area are brought to life through the memories of a child, the commentary of family and friends, and detailed research. One need not be familiar with Kent Island to feel a stir of nostalgia for the simpler times she describes.
No romanticized sentiment is found here. Hardships are made clear ("the shocking cold of January linoleum" in an unheated bedroom, for example, or a coat handed down through six children), but they are tempered with descriptions of the bounty provided by land and water and the reassurance of routine. The security offered by close family ties is evident throughout.
Emphasis is placed on accurate and fond description of the region, though recent comers might be hard pressed to reconcile the dirt roads and general stores of Freedman's childhood with the asphalt and strip malls of today's Kent Island. A selection of period photographs augments the author's colorful prose, giving a visual record of structures that have fallen vicitim to "progress" and the people who helped shape this story.
Sadly, the book's poignancy is derived from what we've lost; the concept of controlled development has come too late to save much of Kent Island's appeal. Freedman's work will stand as a testament to what was and a warning of how quickly such things can be lost.

Kent Island...Another Victim to Megapolis
I read with interest Janet Freedman's book, KENT ISLAND and was saddened by the great loss of American landscape, folkways and individual freedom that goes along with the vast real estate grab that has been occurring everywhere on the East Coast of the United States during the last 50 years. Except for a few state and federal parks, the coastline is completely owned by the wealthy. Where there were once families and communities engaged in agriculture or seafood harvesting we now have a blight of ticky-tacky housing and high rise hotels. Where there were once farmers and watermen working the land and the water there are now yachtsmen and other pleasure boat owners filling our bays and inlets to such an extent that nobody can derive any pleasure from fishing or sailing.Wherein lies the "pleasure"? And its not just the coastline. Here in Pennsylvania, truck farmers and orchard owners daily give way to the lucrative offers of land speculators. Soon we will be getting all our fruit from Chile or Peru because all the excellent arable land in the northeastern U.S. will have been turned into suburbia. GARY WHITTLE

One of the most beautifull books I`ve ever seen!
This book is truly incredible!Sometimes,I can`t believe my eyes. The original purpose of this book is to make people care about the ecosystems and why we should not destroy them. But I don`t know if this is a suitable purpose for a book like this one. The splendid photographs makes you forget that and just look at the true beauty of our planet. Over 200 locations and 250 illustrations makes a perfect view of world wildlife. Among my favourites are the mexican deserts, the Pantanal Rainforest and all of the underwater photographs. I am a lover of all kinds of animals, especially fishes. So that`s why the book is perfect for me. I recognize Frans Lanting and David Doubilet since earlier, and I got books by them both. Galen Rowell is new to me,but he seems to be very good too. And when these three photographs together, the results easily become the most beautifull nature photography book ever made!It is pretty expensive, but believe me,it`s worth the money. I highly recommend this to every lover of nature photographs or strong colours. It is truly inspiring.

This Book Is A Celebration!
It would be difficult indeed to over-estimate the sheer beauty of the photographs printed on the pages of Living Planet. Of course the three photographers were off to a great start as the subject matter they are presenting is riveting. There are so many truly exotic (and still unspoiled) locales explored here. And so many diverse, truly impressive plant and animal forms documented.

But these three gifted photographers are superbly inspired practioners and so they are able to elevate the naturally exalted to an entirely new level of organisation. This is accomplished specifically, at least in part, by the use of super-saturated color in combination with consistently fresh and geometrically complex composition. The results, printed with great care by Crown Publishers, are extraordinary!

The photography is so visually stunning that it is easy to forget the purpose of this book which was published by the World Wildlide Fund. Thus the text, which is teeming with information, emphasises not the beauty of what has been captured on film. Rather it focuses on the steadily progressing ecological nightmare as humans-induced species extinction of animal and plant life proceeds around the globe in an unchecked and relentless manner. To quote briefly from the introduction by Walter Cronkite, "Earth is losing one-hundred species of animals, plants, insects and fungi every day. Experts estimate that the world has lost one-third of its biological wealth over the last thirty years." Astonishing facts the sobriety of which contrasts mightily with the visual celebration of life as depicted in this wonderfully elegant volume.

An Interesting Book to Hit the Top
It was interesting to note that this book is among several top 10's in science. It must result from good educational institutions: I saw this book courtesy of my daughter and was able to spend time with it over the holidays. There is an urgent message here, as everyone knows and WWF is able to get important people on board, not only with endorsements but with their explanations of the threat the world's ecology is facing. This book does a good job of framing out the larger picture already set by books this year which have given compelling narratives also illustrating the biodiversity crisis-- Goodall's Reason for Hope, Johnson and Coates' Nabokov's Blues, and other books like Quammen's Song of the Dodo. Its good to see all these books getting attention. It is going to take a mammoth awareness to really move the world, most of whom will never see amazon.com and this review away from the global destruction that today is most often the norm.

More than worth the price
I've been to the French Quarter twice in the last year. I think I left my heart there! It's such a beautiful city with so much history, and so many great and colorful people! This CD does the city justice and then some! The pictures are glorious, and I don't think there's a block in the Quarter they missed. You can take a variety of "guided" tours, or you have the option of clicking on a map of the Quarter. The map let's you click and see just about every square inch of the Quarter. There aren't a lot of interior pictures on this CD if that's what you are looking for. There are also panoramic views which are great, and an area to "meet" a couple of people from the French Quarter and get some info and perspective from them. This is just a really great buy for anyone who wants to travel to New Orleans' French Quarter, or for people like me who absolutely love the city!

Delightful Virtual Tour of the French Quarter
I tried this CD after viewing the Armchair Tour of Charleston, SC, and I think this one is even better. Tons of information and great photos. I'd love to be able to visit the French Quarter every few months, but failing that opportunity, this has got to be the next best thing.

ArmchairTour- French Quarter
Wow! The quality of the pictures and the effect of the panoramic feature was impressive. New Orleans French quarter is one of my wife and I's favorite places to visit. The use of the DVD shows us some of the houses that we have not visited plus things about the ones that we have that we missed- decorative vents in the buildings. I particularly enjoyed the lady with the Cajun accent doing the audio. Love the dialect. This helps us plan our next trip. Good job.

The greatest pictorial work on Okavango!
Frans Lanting had created marvelous book. His pictures portray the unique beauty of the region, convey the wildness of a place, and force a viewer to visit the place immediately. The photographs and text also urge the people to save this unique ecosystem. We realize the impact of water on the unique environment of the delta that supports the greatest variety of the flora and fauna in the world. At the same time these photographs make us realize what will be lost if the water will be gone. This book has inspired me even more after I visited the Okavango delta. It made me to relive my own experiences once again. After more than 5 years of its publication, this book is still the best pictorial work on Okavango delta. Simply, the greatest!

Stunning photography and wonderful narrative
This is a terrific book to learn more about this region. I can't recommend the book enough. The photography is stunning and the narrative is just right. I only wish it didn't end.

Frans Lanting sees Botswana with a keen eye.
Mr. Lanting is a unique and wonderful photographer who is a great help to all of us. His photos capture the wildlife of the Okavango as they are -- not postcard photos. He has a respect and reverence of this fragile ecosystem (unlike none other in the world) and all that lives and dies there that is captured in this book. Botswana is a special country with a unique ecosystem in the Delta that you should travel to. I've had the good fortune to experience Africa eight times, Botswana twice. I will return many times to the Delta as there is so much there to experience and each time its fresh. Let Mr. Lantings photos pursuade you to go.

This book is Great!
True Secrets of Key West is WONDERFUL! I lived in Key West for years and was always annoyed by all the books people wrote that didn't know the REAL story. Books that claimed to be the real story...but they changed the names, dates and circumstances. This is one that got it right AND it was very funny to read. I give True Secrets of Key West my highest recommendation.

I LOVED it!

Secrets is a real find!
Read this book prior to or contemporaneously with a trip to Key West. It gives you the full scoop on all of the santized facts from your tour guides. This book added a new dimension to our visit and was funny to boot. While it is somewhat hard to locate, it is well worth the effort. Also check out the website maintained by the authors.

Following your heart when there are forks in the road . . .
The Road to Eden's Ridge by M. L. Rose is a complex yet riveting family saga and romantic novel.

It tells the tale of a family from Maine, primarily through the eyes and experiences of Miss Lindsey Briggs. Lindsey is a vivacious and headstrong young woman who is standing up her fiancé at the alter as the novel opens to abandon the traditional life style and follow her heart and dreams by heading off to Nashville to try her hand at country music.

"Follow your heart" is pretty much the cornerstone of this novel and Lindsey's determination to do just that serves as the prism through which the twists and turns of this novel are reflected and refined. For it is the will and determination to block out all but her dream that brings Lindsey success-and great pain and heartache, as in the process of "following her heart" she loses track of the fact that it's a world with many roads and that one's heart may be destines to travel more than one of them.

Heartache has certainly been a facet of the character of her family members and the choices they have made. The whole middle section of the novel provides context for Lindsey's agony as she learns the truth about the previous experiences of the women in her family and the choices they have made and the heartache they have endured.

In the end Lindsey must decide whether her laser like focus on her dream is (as her country music mentor and long time family "friend", legendary country music performer Ben McBride wonders) Lindsey's greatest strength or her greatest weakness.

This is a richly constructed novel with an array of likeable and well-developed characters. It is realistic in its approach to the striving and struggles of musicians on the make and working to fulfill a dream as well as to the Nashville music scene in general. Most importantly, it is an honest and engaging love story that revolves around what feels to be real people with real emotions-a rarity in this day of mass manufactured "romance" novels consisting of cardboard characters of contrived circumstances that exist merely to titillate the reader and make a buck rather than communicate anything about love or life.

This is a novel that will move you and remind you of those bygone days when your own heart was so moved and so full of aching, longing and happiness at the same time. In other words, this is what a romantic novel is supposed to be.

Turning pages on a good story
This is a refreshing story for anyone who believes that we have souls that might be connected and that love exists as part of that connection. Not that Lindsey Briggs necessarily believes it. "No one is destined for anyone else," she tells her grandmother early in the story. But she does call off a wedding that just doesn't feel right and heads to Nashville to pursue an old urge, and as soon as she arrives she falls into a set of friends and a life that seems to be scripted by a fate Lindsay claims not to believe in. But fate, whether one believes in it or not, is a central character in this story. Or was it merely chance that Ben McBride walked into the Bluebird as Lindsey's band was beginning their thrid song. Was it merely chance that Lindsey, in order to relax in his presence, began to talk before she sang that song, unwittingly speaking the words that connected him to her in a way she didn't know.

This is a good story. There is an honest feel to the landscape. And the gentle conversation between Ben McBride and Lilly when they are looking at the sunsert and the flowers and talking about Emily Dickinson and birds is as good as it gets. How can one not believe in love and the connection of souls.

This story will resurrect your dream!
The fact that Lindsey left a sure thing behind to follow her dream is quite inspiring. It reminded me how important that is. It doesn't take a songwriter, singer or musician to be captivated by this intriguing story. This one will stay with you. Eden's Ridge needs to be on the big screen.

Recommended for religious and Non-religious alike
Those who consider religion/spirituality an important part of their lives would be well advised to read this book. It's short, but it says a lot, and is quite thought-provoking.

Quixotic, imaginative, engaging.
Eden In Limbo is a spiritual fantasy novel combining poetry with storytelling. God has taken a male human form; his female partner in the spirit world being silent to all but him. Like most men, he wants to learn to communicate better. As a God of the new century, he wants open communication with every person. In pursuit of this goal we are introduced an American Indian, a questioning Christian, a devout Christian and her wheelchair-bound friend, a Hindi couple, a homosexual couple, a French model, and a group of outspoken black women -- all seeking to better understand themselves in relation to God. Eden In Limbo is a recommended work of quixotic imagination and an engaging "what if" speculative fiction.,

Spiritually provocative
I heard about this book from a friend and thought it sounded pretty awesome. My friend was right! I don't usually god stuff, or poetry, but this was fun reading from the start. Makes me think and I like that. It's especially appropriate for the season, too. You won't regret reading it. Promise!

Where have all the Tom McCall's gone??
This biography of the modern day father of Oregon, makes this native long for days past. For days when Oregon was a leader on the national politcla/cultural/social scene.

Walth does an excellent job detailing not only the political successes of one of Oregon's greatest politicians, but also of the man's personal shortcomings.

I am not certain how much appeal this book will have to non-Oregonian's or people who are unfamiliar with the Pacific Northwest, but I feel that it should be required reading by all students of political science attending Oregon universities.

Our state legislators who are constantly invoking McCall's name and legacy to advance their own political gains, would do well to read this biography. Our elected officials of today pale in comparison to the individual giants of years past.

Oregonians Explained
I am a Native Oregonian living on the east coast and this book helped me understand why I feel like a fish out of water in the midst of uncontrolled suburban sprawl, minimal recycling facilities, and chemical pollution violations are repeatedly ignored by local politicians.
Mr. Walth's book was exciting to read. I recommend it to anyone seeking to understand Oregonians and why we're so proud of the place we call home. Brent Walth tells the story of how Tom McCall gave us that pride.

biography equally about Oregon as it is about McCall
Deserves a place in every hotel and bed/breakfast gift shop across Oregon -- for visitors to the Pacific Northwest to pick up. Walth tells the McCall story and in doing so coaches the reader about the things Oregonians are the most passionate about. Most of us cannot travel to another state and name their most famous governor -- yet McCall's legacy is often mentioned by domestic and international visitors to Oregon.

Delightfully entertaining!
I fell in love with Lyric and David as they rediscovered each other; as the love they shared generations ago is rekindled in their new lifetime. It wasn't the usual romance and I loved the twists and turns. A good read and very entertaining.

I am reading this now and
I love it! Look forward to reading more by this author.

Flames of Rapture
Flames of Rapture is one of the best romance novels about the Wiccan religion I have read in a very long time. The accuracy of witchcraft along with the detail of psychic phenomenon amazed me. Lark Eden captures the essence of passion, sensuality, and romance, each with their own subtle fusion of perception. Lyric, the heroine is a witch of tradition. She uses her psychic gift of psychometry to aid museums and antique dealers place monetary value on items. During her summer visit to Salem, her interest in the local haunted mansion conflicts with the sale of the property. David, the hero moves to Salem to heal from the death of his wife and child three years prior. A fireman that takes his profession very seriously buys the fixer upper without the knowledge it is haunted. While Lark Eden weaves this story, she allows you glimpses of previous life incarnations, clairvoyance incidents and clairaudient thoughts. The mystic side of this book is very 'real to life.' This is a must read for anyone who is interested in witchcraft as a lifestyle, who loves the paranormal in romance, or just wonders what everyday life might be like as a psychic. Kudos' on a story well told! Rosa Pearl, psychic/shaman
