A concise and readable history of the modern papacy
Dr. Riccards' book is an excellent review of the modern papacy, from the fall of the papal states to John Paul II. As the millenium nears, and John Paul's papacy nears its end, this book helps readers understand the social and political forces that define the leader of the church.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about how the papacy came to be in 1999.

Wind and Windspinners: A Nuts and Bolts Approach to Wind-Electric Systems

This Book Another Example of Squelched Information
Probably the reason this book is unavailable is because, at the time of it's authoring, 1974, the back to the land movement was just beginning. Refugies of the sixties' battle with the establishment over the Vietnam War, and cival rights, were just beginning to flee to a simpler, hopefully better life in the country. Every idea in this book was intended for people already living on the land (thus the 'nuts and bolts approach' subtitle). The book is total How To, since an exhaustive search by Hackleman could find only two manufacturers of "Windspinners," in France. The big money of the day was being invested, and still is, in the ridiculously, by comparison, inefficient propeller designs.

Power Living - Mastering The Art of Self-Discipline
Published in Paperback by Special Operations Consulting (01 January, 2000)
Authors: Michael Janke and Michael Anthony Janke
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Enjoyable read, but nothing really new.
I read your book in the hopes that it would present me with information that was easy to read, understand and apply. In this I was not disappointed. It obviously took a lot of effort, passion and, yes, self-discipline to develop this book and incorporate so much information in such an effective way.

However, I must say that it didn't present any original ideas for me. Having read so many similar types of books, that is understandable. I liked the "warrior" theme even though I don't personally advocate aggression as it is currently socially defined - the expression of power. I did understand how it could be used effectively as a foundation for self-mastery. I was somewhat concerned with the redundancy in the list of 100 'Secrets' of Power Living. Many of the items were so similar to each other that they didn't warrant their own bullet point. i.e. 42. Master Patience, 60. Priceless Patience. Some items were even contradictory - 4. Sleep Less, 51. Do Nothing Day - suggesting that people gain seven hours a week by getting up early and then spend one whole day a week (!) doing nothing.

Really liked the extra references at the end. It's an excellent source for related information. Much appreciated.

Would love to see more from you - but do you have anything new to add?

P.S. Reading a book by Peter McWilliams - Just Do It! Let's Get Off Our Buts. Excellent read. Very humorous. Concise - Lots of new stuff I've never seen elsewhere.

The information I was looking for and more.
This book provided me the information I was looking for to help improve my self-discipline. There is lots of helpful advice and suggestions and thought provoking missions (i.e. exercises). The book touches on the power of the mind, setting and attacking goals and improving the body.

Like all self help books all of the information does not apply to everyone. Self help is a very personal thing and it's difficult for a book written for the general public to apply to each of us individually. I found that 80% - 90% was relavent to me. I found myself doing a lot of underlining and making notes. Most of the information is obvisious, but putting it together is difficult for most people. To improve your self-discpline I would recommend reading and re-reading this and other books on the topic to make the important points stick.

The best and worst part of the book is the 100 Secrets of Power Living. The good thing is the bullet format (concise). The bad thing is that there are number of repeated items (i.e. #24. Stop overeating and #62 Don't eat so much). The list could have been cut down to about 80-85 items. The other thing is most people would never have the time to incorporate all of the suggestions (i.e. 30 minutes per day for this and 1 hour per day for that and 1 day per week to do nothing (not with three kids and a working wife)).

All in all the book gives you what you need to help improve your self-discipline I would recommend the book and would seriously consider going to one of Michael Janke's seminar.

A deceptively simple book
I got this book thinking that a Navy SEAL would know a thing or two about self discipline. I have read many similar books and while this was not the best written it's straight forward style was captivating. It reads like a good friend telling you what he did to put more discipline in his life. As we all come to eventually know there are no silver bullets here. You won't find anything in this book, or any other for that matter that will be the magic key that opens the door to iron willed discipline. I find though that learning from those who have gone before and have tried and succeeded is the best way for me to find the strength within myself. I would recommend this book.

Spider-Man Revisited
Writer Brian Michael Bendis set out to reinvent and reinvigorate Marvel's hallowed Spider-Man franchise in this landmark series. Judging from the critical acclaim and market success it's had, I'd say he met his goal.

Spider-Man was originally created in 1963 and while his origin story is a comic book classic, let's just say some of the elements within the story have become somewhat dated. Bendis' rehash of Spidey's origin sets him in modern times, with the look of a modern 15-year-old, and the characters speaking in...you guessed it...modern dialogue.

Bendis has done a fine job of updating the character and doesn't give in to the temptation to pace the story too quickly. He takes his time, building up the characters and the story of how Peter Parker is bitten by a radioactive spider and subsequently given super powers.

Mark Bagley competently, though not spectacularly, illustrates the story. Bagley's artistic storytelling skills are excellent, but I think Marvel might have been better served had they gone with a less traditional artistic style on this book.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN: POWER AND RESPONSIBILITY is a great new beginning for Spider-Man and appeals to fans of all ages.

Bendis Tells The Genesis Of Spidey A Little Hipper, Cooler
'Ultimate Spiderman' is the almost perfect retelling of Spidey for the 22nd century. I think this is a one of a kind story, because i'm pretty certain no other author has attempted such a project.

First off, let me start by saying Brian Bendis is a FANTASTIC writer, and he clearly donates some of his greatest talents to this comic-book. How? Well, the characters. Peter is somewhat nerdy, but not necessarily uncool, making him likeable. Uncle Ben is, as always, the kind uncle, but is also calm and cool, and definitely the epitome of strength and respect. Mary-Jane is definitey toned down, soft-spoken, and intelligent but hip. Flash Thompson is every bit the bully, and is complimented by new cronies.

Bendis also shows off his ability of unique storytelling by taking a slower, more relaxed approach to the spiderman legacy. New characters are intoduced slowly, and the story unfolds slowly, easily, and never misses a beat. And these reasons make Ultimate Spiderman a must buy.

'Power And Responsibility' tells the origin of Spiderman, and introduces Mary-Jane, Uncle Ben, Kong, Flash Thompson and Liz allen (breifly).

Comics for Everyone
Hats off to Marvel for making comics accessible again. Ultimate Spider-Man is a great comic that anyone can read and relate to. It tells the story of a nerdy high school sophomore who suddenly finds himself in possession of fantastic powers. It's an old story, with a hero that will be familiar to almost anyone. After all, Spider-Man is one of the most recognizable characters in entertainment history.

But what's this "Ultimate" about? Spider-Man is a character who was created in the sixties, and since then he's been dragging forty years of continutity and backstory. Ultimate Spider-Man approaches the character from the ground up, with a contemporary voice and pop culture references that place the book squarely in the 21st century. This Peter Parker isn't married and successful yet; he's barely coming to grips with his powers. The origin is updated, the villains look different, and nothing about the hero's future is set.

Longtime Spider-Man fans may still be more comfortable with the original character that they've grown up with. (The "classic" Spider-Man is still thriving and his ongoing series is currently enjoying the excellent writing of Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski.) But for those who lost interest in comics years ago, or those who are approaching the medium for the first time, this book is absolutely perfect.

The writing, by comics wunderkind Brian Michael Bendis, is awesome. Dialogue is sharp and sparkling with very authentic voices. The art is attractive and expressive. The stories are easy to follow, even for a first time comics reader. It's a comic that anyone can enjoy, and one which I strongly recommend. I loved it, my girlfriend loved it, and I'm sure that you'll love it.

Pretty Good Book Spoiled by Sloppy Editing
This is a fast moving political thriller with a good plot. Thecharacters are somewhat two dimensional, but, all in all, not bad. What ruined it for me was the horrible editing. Maybe it wasn't edited at all, though, because I counted at least 10 errors in grammar, punctuation and fact in the first 100 pages. The book was evidently self published, because an Amazon quote from the publisher gives her name as the person to whom the author dedicates the book, his "life partner". I do not object to self publishing, but I do object to the distracting and extremely unprofessional product and feel cheated at having spent money on this level of writing. END

Quick reading
The book is a quick read, with an interesting plot. The ending was a little predictable, though. I personally know this author and am impressed with his work. I hope there are more novels in the works.

Provocative and unsettling
This well- written books grabs you from the start and won't let go. It's provocative and unsettling at the same time. Intentionally so. If Mr. Gerhardt sets out to challenge you to think about the ramifications of your fondest wishes - he succeeds. Does the end justify the means? You'll find yourself 'this' close to saying 'yes' until you shake yourself from your reveries. This book will not be easily forgotten. One can only wait for the movie version, which in the right hands would be a powerful film. Just a great 'what-if'. A Political thriller of the highest calibre. Read it!

Spin : How to Turn the Power of the Press to Your Advantage

Puts some respect into a four-letter word
As the title suggests, Michael Sitrick is unabashed by the four-letter word that even most public relations professionals wince when hearing: Spin. With all of its negative implications, thanks to the media and entertainment industries who disdain the thought that they can be used to help attain an organization's objectives, Sitrick shows how he built a career and his own business by knowing how to use these industries to his advantage. What's more, he demystifies the process with nine basic rules that have guided his own success. These rules, however, are certainly not trade secrets and are in fact second nature (or at least should be) to any truly successful PR person who has dealt with crisis communication. Overall, the book is very entertaining and filled with many examples of how Sitrick has made a name for himself. For the un-indoctrinated into the world of spin, he makes it clear that this is not about misleading people or falsely manipulating the media, but rather about ensuring the perspective you want is effectively presented to the media and, thereby, considered by the public when forming opinions. For those who work in the field of PR, it reinforces concepts that every professional should have acquired, which isn't to say every professional is capable (or willing) of applying them. In fact, from my own experience, that person is extremely rare and difficult to groom within an organization, since they are often blinded by their own organizational culture and hierarchy from finding the root of the problem or becoming the driving force to overcome a crisis. This is the real beauty of Sitrick's book, since he tells you enough of how he goes about fixing problems to make you realize that you need that kind of PR focus as well during a crisis, but if you want it done right you're going to need someone with his expertise. The consummate PR professional, his book will leave you wondering how you could ever get along without him and his company.

The dean of spin reveals the secrets
Mike Sitrick's "SPIN" reveals the secrets and demonstrates that the media is not something to be "managed," as in the days of JFK. The author's examples are fascinating and provide ample proof to all of Corporate America that public relations is not what they might think it is. It's important to note that to handle a crisis in today's glare of intense media takes planning far in advance of that moment, as Sitrick points out so well. The examples he offers are obviously only the few he can talk about as his career indicates he's handled hundreds of confidential crises. This is an inside look at the work of an expert in a zone of the press people don't even know exists. After you read it you will ask yourself, "How many news stories influenced by experts?" Certainly, as Sitrick's book points out, the most famous bankruptcy in the history of this country, the Orange County Bankruptcy, was effected by the task force of Sitrick's company. There is no higher level of the media than that of "60 Minutes" and its unique primetime domain. This book is essential to a 90's understanding of the press and how it effects everyone. If you're in business, you should read it and then you should read it again. If you're not, read it twice.

A must read to prepare to successfully deal with a crisis.
Sitrick's book is a must read to prepare you to successfully deal with a crisis. Sitrick's book is a common-sense guide to navigating what crisis managers know to be a tricky, hazardous road. In the real world of business, where mistakes impact the survival of companies, reputations and livelihoods, Sirick's methods are dead-on. I found the book entertaining, educational and highly intriguing. Gaining a through understanding of the concepts and approaches presented in Sitrick's book is invaluable. As CEO, I have successfully lead turnarounds of several companies and during a period of crisis being prepared with a well thought out and executable crisis management plan may be the difference between success and failure. My experience has taught me that many people claim to be crisis managers but Mike is the proven master. I strongly recommend the book, its an investment that may provide you and your company with the tools to survive a crisis.

High Protein Diet Works GREAT!
When I first started it I instantly felt better. mentally and physically. I have great energy. If you start a Protein diet, feel weak, just eat more protein. I currently eat 130 grams of protein daily , in 5 meals. Of course my choice of protein source is non fat turkey slices. 30 cals per 5 protein. In any case just from protein diet i was losing 3 lbs a week. But since i added cardio, i lose 7 lbs a week. So far i have lost 50lbs on protein diet in 2 months! and havent lost any muscle. In likely hood i have gained muscle. All my friends are amazed. On Weekends i treat myself to normal calories of food but I just HAVE TO have meat, lots of it in everything i eat these days. Salmon, steak, chicken, pork, MMMMMMmmmm. The downside...if you're vegetarian this diet is not for you. :) But i think you would agree with me, eating veggies is alot more boring than MEAT and more time consuming to calculate the amount of protein!

Much Better Book and Diet Than Atkins
Protein Power is a much better book and diet than Dr. Atkins has been selling. I would like to see Drs. Eades on another informertial with more support and success stories. Protein power allows anywhere from 30-55 grams of carbs during the weight loss portion of the program. When I am in ketosis I suffer from dry mouth, and headaches so I cant be on phase one. To solve this I use phase two eating 55 grams of carbs a day. YES you CAN lose weight eating that many carbs, and the first low-carb diets like william bantings call for around 60 grams of carbs daily. I also enjoy having fruits and grains on protein power which are banned on atkins. Also the Eades dont make products a dog wont eat like atkins diet products. Stick to real food, and if you want something sweet have a small piece of a candy bar instead of those awful atkins bars. Below is a typical days food for me.

Breakfast
-2 eggs
-4oz canadian bacon
-1 slice lite toast
-1/2 cup raspberries
-tea

Lunch
-grilled chicken breast
-salad with oil dressing
-5 saltines
-diet rc cola(no aspartame)

Dinner
-spare ribs
-green beans
-cheesecake with berries

Snack
-deviled egg

A diet I can stick to - I feel great!
Ten years ago I hired a personal trainer to help me with my weight. With steady exercise and a high protein, moderate fat and low carbo diet, I went from 32% body fat to 19% body fat in about 10 months. I looked and felt fantastic. I then made the mistake of listening to health experts who told me my diet was too high in fat and to switch to high carbs. So here I sit 10 years later: 65 pounds overweight, constantly hungry and feeling more and more lethargic. I recently noticed when my stepchildren were visiting that my hubby and I ate a lot more "high-fat" food: bacon and eggs for breakfast, hamburgers for dinner, tuna or turkey sandwiches at lunch. I noticed that when I ate these high fat foods, I felt satisfied and full more quickly and lost my constant craving to stuff my face. I lightbulb came on in my head so I decided to switch my diet back ten years - high protein, moderate fat, low carbs. To refresh my memory, I bought this book, "The Zone" and "Dr. Atkin's Diet Revolution". They are all good books and made sense to me - they confirmed what I apparently have known all along. I have been back on a protein diet (as recommended by this book) now for three weeks, have lost 10 pounds, sleep wonderfully, have no more acid reflux, feel more alert and already look younger. I highly recommend it or the other two books mentioned. I'll update you in a couple of months on my progress. Good Luck!

Don't buy this book for CGI programming
I bought this book based on the 5-star reviews - never do THAT again......long on abstract examples that don't mirror the real world, short on logical explanations for the common man(woman).. I have had several other PERL books from the local library that were much better (Castros book is good, don't believe the condescending reviews) - not for the CGI web programmer

Good introduction to Perl, and great reference
From its corny title you might expect another one of those sleazy introductions to Perl (I can name a few), but I can happily say that this book is an exception. The overview of the language is excellent and very comprehensible. Even after reading Learning Perl and Programming Perl, I picked up some valuable tips. The chapters on Object Oriented Programming and Perl/Tk are also good. For the Perl/CGI part, you might consider reading additional material, however. All in all, a surprisingly good introduction and reference to Perl 5, both for the beginner and the more advanced programmer.

Perl power
Excellent book that gets you started with lots of areas of perl. Most of the code I have tried works fine with Activestates's 523 build and with the perl development kit 1.2.4. Having code that work is rare with these books especially with Windows. I use 98 and NT and unix. This book is not a diffinitive guide to perl but it gives you a good summay in most of the important area's and enought code to get started quickly. It gave me lots of ideas on things I could use perl for. I also like "Perl 5 complete" for theory, but the code for that book is very buggy and hard to get to work. I like its detailed explanation of how things are suppose to work. "Perl Cookbook" is also excellent for how to solve problems various kinds of problems. These are the best of the perl books I have.
