Illusions of Power: The Fate of a Reform Government
This is an excellent and first hand account of the misfortune, scandal and calamity that befel the Whitlam Government in Australia from 1972-1975. As the first Labor government in 29 years, the members of the new regime were presented with an opportunity for reform unequaled in Australian history. However, as the book details, the dream sooned turned to nightmare, as the party was rocked by scandal in the form of the loans affair and many other misfortunes. Finally, with the Senate blocking the flow of money needed to run the country, the Government was dismissed by the Govoner General John Kerr. So was the fate of a reform government.

This is a lively and well written account of the events seen at first hand by Michael Sexton, who was personally involved in all the events and knew everyone involved.

Intelligence Power in Peace and War

The Ultimate Graduate/Policy Text on Intelligence
This is the textbook for the best and the brightest of both the academic world and the policy world. It is not an easy read, between the British language form and the deep thinking, but it is, as Christopher Andrew says, "the best overview" and "surely destined to become a standard work". I especially liked its attention to components and boundaries, effects, accuracy, and evaluation. Perhaps most usefully within the book is the distinction between long-term intelligence endeavors that rely primarily on open sources and serve to improve state understanding and state behavior, and short-term espionage that tends to be intrusive and heighten the target state's feelings of vulnerability and hostility. No intelligence library is complete without this book--it provides a rock-solid foundation for serious thinking about the intelligence in the 21st Century.

Great insights from a great writer
Jon Hassler provides delightful insights on inspirations, characters, and writing in general in this interview. This book is a must for any serious Jon Hassler fan. I recently had the honor of meeting Mr. Hassler, and from that experience, reading his books, and gaining insight into his thoughts, I am convinced Jon Hassler is one of the great midwestern writers of our time.

Japan's Reluctant Realism: Foreign Policy Challenges in an Era of Uncertain Power
Published in Paperback by Palgrave Macmillan (2003)
Author: Michael Green
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

an excellent book on Japanese foreign policy
This is an excellent book on Japanese foreign policy written by someone now working for the National Security Council. It draws upon on copious research including interviews conducted by the author, as well as Japanese and English language secondary source materials. Green convincingly argues that Japanese foreign policy is particularly driven by parochial domestic considerations, and in this respect the book is quite timely in light of the political changes occurring in Japan. I learned quite a bit from reading this book -- even regarding issues on which I thought my own prior knowledge was significant.

WOW!
This is one of those "WOW" books. It took me to places I'll probably never experience otherwise and it took me inside the authors' minds and hearts. I actually felt I was right there on the journey with them. I especially appreciated the honesty with which it was written. The thoughtful, helpful hints at the end would prove invaluable to anyone contemplating a lengthy trip or even one for a month.

A Book for People Who Work too Much and Live too Little
This book is an absorbing travelogue and an inspirational account of one couple's road to renewal through a year-long, round-the-world adventure. Interspersed with the adventures are practical tips for doing what the authors did -- renewing and refreshing their lives by going deliberately "off course." Americans work more hours per year than anyone else on Earth. "A Journey of Work-Life Renewal" is a welcome reminder that there's a fascinating world of possibilities out there waiting for us, and that it's possible to experience it without giving up one's career. A must-read for anyone bored with their job or frustrated by the sameness of day-to-day life.
