An intriguingly good read
A breath of fresh air among the novels being released these days. It surely has not been written according to the tutorial that must come with most writers' word processing software! For the thinker in you. Try it :-)

Nice..Long, but Nice
It's a kind of tedious read, but the central idea (at least what I came away as the central idea) is great: masculinity, and athletics aren't two bad notions in and of themselves. But when you put the two together, and not properly supervised, you can come up with some horrible stuff. He goes about proving this by interviewing some ex-jocks and comes up with some great material. It's basically a sociological sutdy, but works out nicely.

Many Printing mistakes in an otherwise excellent book
Don't get me wrong, I would had rated this book with 5 stars, If only wouldn't have that many printing foes. (read mistakes). Many excercises and graphics contain mis-leading information. Author is fully aware of most of them I believe. It tricks your mind with erronous information, traps, i.e. when reading logic equations, circuits layouts, labels, etc. Makes you hesitate about what you think should be the right idea, or about what you had just read lines above. It will be an excellent reference tool, and great in covering design methodolgies (Logic, PLc, Electropneumatics, pneumatic control, etc.), once all those flaws are corrected.

Hard Boiled Super Hero Extra Vagance
Third Trade Paperback outing for the Powers comic book series, third super homicide case for our heroes, some character development who will enhance the metaplot of the series.
It share the weakness of the previous two: lame detective plot, but that is clearly not the reason for the appeal of the book(s).
Good characters, really good dialogs, a well defined background and captivating art are the selling points.
In a perfect world should have get just three stars, but in comparison to the rest of the market the fourth is well deserved.
And, as a matter of fact, even Watchmen had a lame detective plot.

Great for Retailers wanting to gain competitive advantage!
Found book very insightful for any retailer or producer who wants to better understand retail branding. It goes thru the hows, whys, and implications of retail branding. If a retailer wants to gain a significant competitive advantage - Read this book! Great for producers looking at retail distribution issues as they relate to their products and brand image. Good case studies; although some were for European retailers, many were US companies.

Heartbroken that the book is now out of print!
Sex, Violence and Power in Sports is a compelation of short articles written by the authors (and others) with such diverse topics as locker room talk, what can be said about a society whose fascination with sports is a direct correlate of how much blood is spilled during the game, and the inside-outside dillema of homosexual atheletes. This in itself is somewhat new--few sociologists have attempted to tackle (no pun intended) the subject of the athletic subculture. What's more new, however, is the feminist slant the authors have taken to explain the culture of athletes as part of the larger patriarchy. Sure, it's a weighty book, and its suggestions that athletics are "deviogenic" would be denied by all well-socialized athletes, but it is well worth the read.

classic analysis of small town social relationships
Having lived in a number of small towns, I am continually amazed at the relevance of this classic study to contemporary local politics and social relationships. Long before "investigative reporting", a grad student goes undercover for a year in a small town and reports his findings -- social groups, power, politics and tradition. This is not a dry scientific analysis, but a fascinating description of American life outside the city.

The Structure of Power in America: The Corporate Elite As a Ruling Class

A seriously neglected topic
The book takes a trenchant look at a seriously neglected topic - the question of who actually governs the US. Since this question impacts directly on all other matters facing the US, it is a topic that should be of prime concern; that it gets so little attention is a real worry. The book reflects the need for a vital American left to provide a genuine criticism and coherent opposition to non-democratic developments in the US. Perhaps unavoidably the book is little patchy. This reflects the fact that it is an edited collection, but also underlines the problem of reasearch in this area - so much real governance activity is done in secret and therefore not open to sustained research and analysis. I hope the authors are working on an updated version.
