A great source for teachers
I am a student of English Competence and found this book extemely insightful and practical for any teacher of Composition, especially a teacher of ethnolinguistic minority students. I find that this book integrates theoretical foundation (especially about language acquisition) with practical pedagogical implications that helps any teacher better understand and teach his or her students about English composition.

Don't go to NYC without this guide.
As a New York City aficionado, who visits the city about four times a year, I find this book to be the best I've read. Visually, this guide is amazing. The glossy, clear and beautiful photos throughout the book, make it even more worthy of buying and the maps (including one for the subway) are also easy to understand.

The book is divided up into sections based on each area of town and then there is a chapter titled "Travelers' Needs," which includes places to stay, all types of restaurants, shopping and much more. The "Survival Guide" is also extremely helpful with its practical information. You'll also find history about New York all throughout the guide, which I find very interesting.

Another really nice thing about this book is that it is friendly to foreign visitors, explaining things like how to use a pay phone and the U.S. currency.

If you are planning on going to NYC, this "Eyewitness Travel Guide" is an absolute must have! Everything you want or need to know about this fabulous and one-of-a-kind city is right in this book.

Essential for the Responsible Owner/Rider/Caretaker
Dr. Eleanor Kellon has written a concise, well-organized, and comprehensive guide for first aid treatment in emergencies that warrant a call to the veterinarian. She organizes injuries and conditions into major categories such as wounds/bleeding, burns, colic, lameness, heat stoke, head/neck/eyes, shock, foaling/newborns, and drug reactions. This allows the reader to quickly and easily access the pertinent chapters. Within each of these categories, she identifies the items for a first aid kit, further defines specific conditions/injuries, explains the symptoms or causes, and outlines the first aid treatment. Dr. Kellon also rates the emergency nature of each condition/ injury. The guide also contains useful appendices (general signs of serious illness, signs of adequate tranquilization, bandaging, giving injections, administering eye medications).

This manual is not intended to be a complete equine medical guide and does not attempt to be. Rather, Dr. Kellon succinctly presents essential information that, hopefully, the horse owner or sitter will never have to use.

One fact worth noting: although this guide was reprinted in 1999, it was originally written and copyrighted in 1990. Have there been advances in equine emergency medicine in the past ten years to warrant an updated second edition?

Clear and quick information about earthquakes.
The California Traveler Series are an excellent group of small books that give you whatever you want to know about various aspects of California in a quick and painless way. The book on Earthquakes will let you know which part of the State is prone to rock and roll and which areas are immune from constantly changing landscape. The text and diagrams are excellent in clarifying the problem of earthquakes.

Aptly Titled Extraordinary!!!
This beautifully illustrated book is of the "coffeetable" variety but that moniker fails to do justice for this incredible look into the life of the brillant novelist. Scores of rare photos and documents illustrate the best text I have ever read on the private life of Ms. Wharton. This is definately not the "ice queen" of other biographers; reproduced postcards and quoted letters give graphic proof of her warm and witty personality . She was clearly blessed with a remarkable capacity for friendship and unending thirst for knowledge and experiences. This is truly the finest biography ever written on the legendary lady of letters. I cannot tell you what a pleasure it is to own this volume, it proudly sits on my shelf alongside Ms. Wharton's own works. An absolute must for any reference library on Wharton!!!

The Spirit Of Youth
I think that this is a fabulous childrens book about the life of a young child an how she grows up through life. Her vibrant youth starts in New York City where her father is a wealthy man and builds them a nice house. The book then continues to follow her childhood until she is at marrying age. I feel this book is a perfect childrens book and shows what life and spirit that children can have. Hattie's almost non-stop spunk characterizes how children lived back then and how important childhood is. The main theme in this story is the spirit and vibrance of youth.

Eleanor of Castile: Queen and Society in Thirteenth Century England
Published in Paperback by Palgrave Macmillan (1998)
Author: John Carmi Parsons
Amazon base price: $24.95
Used price: $17.94

An exemplary study!
This is a wonderful book that discusses not only Eleanor, but the institution of queenship in medieval England. Parsons is a master at looking at a subject from a variety of disciplinary approaches and angles. Readers should be warned it presumes a thorough knowledge of thirteenth-century European politics, though.
