Children's Classic
Janusz Korczak (pseudonym for Henryk Goldszmit) is one of Poland's most beloved children's authors. There is not only this story, but also a sequel... . (One can see why an American publisher might not have wanted to publish the translation.) I am only sorry that neither of these stories are always in print in English. If you can read German you can get both it and its sequel in German from Amazon.de.

The first English translation, brought out by Roy Publishing, was one of the joys of my childhood. I was lucky - a decade or so later I wrote to the librarian at the library where I had checked it out so often in childhood - I wanted the publishing information so I could look for it - and she sent me the book! It is one of my cherished possessions, and I bless that dear librarian always. I like to write, and Januzs Korczak is one of my primary influences, others being C.S. Lewis and Francis Hodgson Burnett (for stories about children who become kings or queens). If you can't read King Matt's story, I recommend those authors, and also E. Nesbit, Connie Willis, Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, R.A. MacAvoy, James Blaylock... This list could go on forever, but I will always think it imperfect as long as Korczak cannot be at the top because his stories are unavailable in English.

Lourie's translation gives more of a European flavor to the story; the earlier translation is softer, and it appears that some detail was omitted. My guess is that the earlier translators wanted to present an impression of the story that did not show as much of the sad, or the tongue-in-cheek, quality of the original, because the Polish people were then under occupation by the Nazis. I rather wish Lourie would translate the sequel, and that both books would stay in print in English FOREVER.

Great, unique, funny, wise; how do I get a copy?
This is a truly unique book. The author has a great understanding of the way a kid thinks. The main character is a young boy who is crowned king. He has various adventures as he learns about the world of grownups: going to war, starting a parliament for kids, traveling, etc. My only regret is that I read a library copy and I want to own my own but it is out of print.

LET'S BRING THEM BACK!
I could not believe that most of Gordon Korman's books are out of print!

Is everyone so decadent that all they care about is garbage 7th grade bathroom entertainment like Simpsons?

I decided to finally purchase this book after getting it out of the library several times and was shocked that it was already out of print.

There is the usual hilarious slapstick comedy of the kids in the school for boys and the girls acress the street.

This time there is a movie going to be filmed at the school. The book is pretty predictable and fun to read....

...until Miss Scrimmage (the dippy headmistress of the girl's finishing school across the street from the boys school) goes ballistic and a trailer runs wild.

Although I have read the book several times, that part NEVER fails to get me laughing so hard that I end up in tears. Very few books can to do that to me- espeically over and over, but Gordon Korman books can.

The characters in the book are beautifully developed and by the end, you feel like you know them.

I would recommend that you read the previous books in the Bruno and Boots series from the beginning (starting with THIS CAN NOT BE HAPPENING AT MACDONALD HALL, BEWARE THE FISH, GO JUMP IN THE POOL, WAR WITH MR. WIZZLE, ZUCCHINI WARRIORS).

Then you will appreciate this book MACDONALD HALL GOES HOLLYWOOD even more.

A Gordon Korman book (especially BRUNO and BOOTS) every now and then is a perfect remedy for what ails you......IF you have a sense of humor, that is.

This kind of humor is sorely needed when you have a bad day or just when you need to sit back and have a really good laugh.

Great book!
I can't believe that so many of Gordon Korman's books are out of print! Has the world lost its mind??? We need Gordon Korman! To keep us happy...to keep us laughing...to keep us alive!

A "must read" for spirit/life balance
This book is practical, applicable, and an easy read. It offers ways of developing and integrating one's spiritual life in and through work. The book provides helpful ideas and examples for developing integrity, purpose, courage, discipline and other faith based qualities in day to day life. I highly recommend it!

A Book with Universal Appeal
Soul Business is a book for everyone. The twelve faith-based entrepreneurial qualities should be examined in every human's life. The format of the book is reader-friendly and helps the reader to really reflect and search his/her soul no matter what type of work he/she does. I found it inspiring and thought-provoking with stories well-told to exemplify the qualities.

This was a great help!!!!
My daughter Laura was having problems in school. We had her tested and they said she needed to focus more. They suggested that we set aside a time to read together at home. We had not been doing that much. The cover to this book is so bright and colorful she went for it instantly! We thumbed through it and right there in the store, she tried reading the stories. I could see that they were simple enough for her but would also challenge her in her reading.

I can't say enough about this Young Reader's Bible. Laura has learned to love reading because of it. To me, that is a miracle because she was in danger of being held back before. These are familiar stories so they draw a child in. Even kids who have not gone to Sunday school before will find these stories exciting, and will want to read on. And the pictures are a BONUS.

I would recommend this book to anyone who asks about a children's Bible, and I have done so. It has been fun to see how many kids from church now pack their Young Reader's Bible with them. Buy this book. You won't be disappointed!

The Young Reader's Bible - Standard
I wanted a Bible story book for a 12 year old Chinese girl who has been in America only 8 months. When she arrived she knew very little or if any English.

I feel the book is very attractive with easy reading. I was drawn to the cover in comparison to other books I reviewed, in that the cover had adults and not only children.

The Bible stories are well chosen and which carries a historical thread throughout the book.

Earlier I sent her a more "primer" Bible story book which she told me she can now read.

I choose it because it is a Lovely Book.

Great method of seeing both sides
I'm using this excellent book to teach my Black studies class right now. Primarily, it provides each side of debates of famous issues in Black history. For example, Thomas Jefferson's theories of Black inferiority are compared with Benjamin Banneker's beleifs in the equality of all, Booker T. Washington's "bootstrap theory" is compared with WEB DuBois's belief in social protest, MLK's veiws on the inclusion of Blacks in American society is compared with Malcolm X's views on Black Nationalism, etc. Complete lectures, speeches, and wirings in the own words of the people who are discussed, are given so that the reader/students may make up their own minds. Teachers, take note of this and consider it for your classes.

This Bruno character must be seen to be believed! "Half-animal, half squirrel"?! This cannot be possible in nature, yet there he is on the page! Living proof that such a creature DOES exist in this world! And one must admire his incredible courage to try and lift (what looks to be) many, many times his own wieght! This is truely a remarkable half-animal! His valor, sincerity, ambition and natural good looks make him an invaluable treasure! Yes, he is half-animal and half-squirrel and I say thank God for it! He is Bruno! BRAVO!

Inspiring and impossible to put down.
This is the story of an Amish girl who left her community to marry an "outsider" and how it changed her life. It is inspiring how she deals with life's hardships. Sometimes families don't communicate well, but remain steadfast and lovingly care for each other. It also shows how you can accept what life brings you and turn the bad into good. At every turn there was something new to keep you from putting the book down. We kept passing the book around where I work and everyone is waiting for the sequel to be published. This very talented author should be promoted more widely, as well as her awesome books.
