Excellent book for Christian families
This book is superb! It gives great advice for the modern urban family, and does it in a down-to-earth, easy-to-understand way. The theme is serious, but the author provides information while providing a few jokes along the way. And just because it is easy to understand does not mean it lacks content. On the contrary, this book provides complete Christian guidelines on everything from dating to choosing a mate, to marriage, to the proper way to take care of a household and raise a family. This book was a blessing in more ways than one! What more can I say, if you are considering buying this book -- DO IT. On a personal note, this book helped me prepare for my marriage, organize my finances, buy my house, prepare for the birth of my child and I am STILL using this book as a reference. All Black churches should recommend this book to their congregations. This book was a fulfilling dose of Christian guidelines, peppered with loving wit and wrapped in practicality.

Three Really Great Short Stories
This set contains two now out of print audio books: "Four Card Draw" and "The Turkey Feather Riders." All three are well done with a great cast of characters and special effects. The audio is crisp and clear, easily heard in an automobile's noisy environment.

Four Card Draw. Louis L'Amour starts this audio volume with a short discourse on period books about the old west. "Four Card Draw" is told first person by Allen Ring, a gambler who wins the Red Rock Ranch in Arizona. He is told the ranch is haunted by someone who was murdered there. That someone was one of the three Haslet brothers, owners of a neighboring ranch, who are out for revenge. Allen walks right into the middle of a frying pan and ends up fighting for his life!

Riding For The Brand. Jed Asberry wins a poker game only to find himself robbed by the angry losers. They dump him in the desert with no clothes, left to die. Days later, on his last legs, he stumbles across three recently killed people (two men and a woman)... in the middle of the desert. Taking clothes, guns, and papers from one of the men, Jed becomes Micheal Latch. Micheal was on his way to inherit a ranch, so Jed decides to assume this role. He finds himself up to his neck in serious shooting trouble as someone else is willing to murder to get the property!

The Turkey Feather Riders. Louis L'Amour starts this story by giving a short discourse on cowboys and the cattle business as it was in the 1860's through 1880's (and now). Jim Sandefer is the forman for a New Mexico ranch. His boss, Grey Bowen, makes a sudden visit (after years of being away) with his daughter, Elaine, and some new guests: Rose and Lee Martin. Grey wants to marry Rose, but Jim discovers that she and her son are up to something that doesn't smell right! Then the shooting begins!

Well worth the purchase price. Run Time: 180 minutes.

The best book about life in days gone by!
Knox did an outstanding job of presenting this vignette about life on the Cumberland in another era. The story is simply fantastic. The writing is wonderful.

For it's few number of pages, I treasure it as one of my favorite books of all time, sutiable for all ages.

San Francisco Bay Area Murals: Communities Create Their Muses 1904-1997

the complete handbook of San Francisco's mural treasures
My nomination for a perfect, crystalline Saturday: Follow Drescher's guide through San Francisco neighborhoods to find murals on walls glowing against the September sky. The title is right. Humankind doesn't let nature alone in Bagdad by the Bay. We have been filling walls with our color and figures since the walls have stood in the City. That most curious of monuments, Coit Tower, brimming with the muscular WPA murals, tells California's story in paint. The murals in the Haight vibrate with psychedelic counterculture; those of the Mission and Western Addition not only deliver the messages of the Latino and African American neighborhoods but have become identified as centers of the communities. People meet at a mural in San Francisco, just as they might meet at a fountain in Rome. Of course, the book records the outstanding art across the Bay and down the Peninsula, but for me the best part of the book was its putting together city maps and pictures of murals so that a reader can experience the favorites. The fancy semiotics, art techniques and materials are all here, conveyed by a recognized authority, but the author is wise enough not to get in the way of the always revolutionary, ever traditional mix of color, lines, architecture and geography. A keeper.

Revisiting a Childhood Hero
A winner for adults as well as children! I grew up during the 1960s with baseball heroes like Willie Mays and Sandy Koufax, and reading this book with my two neices (4 and 7) was like revisiting a much-loved summer house or vacation spot. Although the girls knew very little about baseball, they loved the wonderful illustrations, and the lilting sing-song rhymes about the great Willie Mays. This book would be especially appreciated by children from ethnic groups who don't always see themselves represented in major league sports: Willie didn't harp about race or racial discrimination, he just played the best game of baseball he could. Highly recommended.

shifting interludes
Jack Bales has done it! His "Shifting Interludes", is a masterpiece, a grand compulation of Willie Morris'essays. Mr. Bales' talent and ability has proven itself and is only equaled by Willie Morris' skill in the form of the essay. I would recommend this whole heartedly to any one who lived through the turbulent times Willie Morris writes of, or who simply enjoys fine reading and craftsmanshift in books. A must read and a fine gift.

I'd just like to say that this man knows what he's talking about, and knows how to teach it. He explains things in a way that is thorough easy to understand. I have taken two of his classes at DeVry, and would definately recommend his book.

Craftmanship of 90's
I was not a big fan of log homes until I saw this book. I enjoyed seeing the depth of detail through the house, very similar to the work of James Cutler. A very fine book to add to the architectural libray.

Brilliant Satirical Work
This book is a must have. The author combines southern roots with northern sensibilities to create a piece that speaks to us all. In the spirit of Langston Hughes Mr. Mungin disarms critics and demogagues forcing them to see the reality of the common man. In a world filled with hurtful and degrading dialogue 'Sleepy Willie' makes his point while putting a smile on your face.

a great mystery!!
I had been looking for a good mystery and I found it. This book was very well written and it centers around horse racing much better than Dick Francis' books do. I love racing and mysteries. Shoemaker knows exactly what he's taking about and makes you feel like you're really there. Overall I loved it.
