Must read if you lived in 40's and 50's
I really enjoyed the humor and nostalgia of the 40's and 50's. The author certainly knows about what goes on in the minds of teenagers. His characters bring back many memories of this colorful era. I'm not really that much of a sports fan but still found much in the novel to hold my interest.

A great story, fun to read.
This is a wonderful story, a real joy to read. I could really relate to Willie Michaels ("Willie Mackerels" to his friends). Willie is a kid with a dream: He wants to become a major league baseball player. But Willie isn't a great athlete, and in his senior year of high school he finds himself playing with the Happy Valley Milk Maids, who have hit rock bottom. Willie also dreams of Trudy Trammell, but his chances of gaining Trudy's affections seem as unlikely as the Milk Maids' chances of winning a game.

The book runs the range of human emotions, but mostly it was just a lot of fun to read. Mike Clarke knows how to tell a story. His writing style is very quick and entertaining, and The Migration of Willie Mackerels is a delightful novel. I highly recommend it.

One of my favorite books of the year!
I grew up in the city, I was very moved by the explanation and discription of the Appalachian mountains, life styles, and cultures. This was a very moving story about excepting and loving other persons and their differences.

One of the most engrossing books I have ever read!
"Miss Willie" is a delightful story about a school teacher who moves from a big city to a very small community in the hills of Kentucky. Easy to read, this book kept me spell bound until I finished it. A real treat for readers of all ages

Fantastic reading!
All the stories from years back are here, in this book! Also, an enlightening interview with Clower. I bought this for my dad for Father's Day and plan to find my own copy. If you want light-hearted, meaningful reading about times past, this is the book for you. This compilation is well-organized i.e. Ledbetter family section, coon huntin' section, etc. Find one of these and put it in a safe place. These are hard to come by and are definitely something to treasure.

This is laugh-out-loud stuff-- a gifted storyteller!
I first read one of these stories in an airline magazine. I figured the sample was the best of the bunch, but ordered the book anyway. Story after story, Jerry Clower immerses you in the life of the deep south and tells you stories that you will think about for years afterward-- and you'll laugh with each recalling!

Peaceful and Energizing
Willie Morris's Terrains of the Heart speaks to the soul in a way that provides peace and energy. His choice of words and writing style add a depth to understanding the essential core of human experience and expression in its deepest and most fulfilling sense. As I read I felt a peacefulness for I could identify with his experiences in many short story forms he presented them within the context of his essays. I also felt energgized not only because of his ways of expressing his profound thoughts but also because of what was being written. A profound understanding of relationships, returns to the past parts of our lives, the importance and impact of history and more were stimulating and provoking in a way that provided a sense of intellectual and spiritual affirmation.

This is a book to be read and re-read, savored and enjoyed.
When "Terrains of the Heart" first appeared in 1981, the RICHMOND NEWS LEADER wrote, "The temptation will be strong to take 'Terrains of the Heart' in huge gulps. Resist it, for this is a book to savor, to reflect on, to return to over the years when home is nearby, or when the very idea of it seems far, far away." The author Willie Morris, who passed away Aug. 2, 1999, is still very much with us in these pages. "Terrains of the Heart" is a fitting chronological companion to Morris's acclaimed autobiography, "North Toward Home."

astonishingly poignant
Uncle willie and the soup kitchen is a beautiful, wonderful book to read with a child. It presents a young boy and his Uncle willie as he gathers food to prepare at a soup kitchen in which he works. The fact that Uncle Willie considers the denizens his guests, and not moochers or people looking for a handout is deeply moving. No treacly sentiment,no preaching, this is a lovely story which made me cry upopn first reading it.I read it with my kids, and have pressed copies upon others since discovering it in a remainder bin! My first grade class adored it, and it stimulated a great discussion afterwards on hunger poverty and helping.Reaaly very well done.Moving gentle loving, belongs in every library.

Uncle Willie Teaches Compassion
Can a soup kitchen be warm and inviting? It can when Uncle Willie works there.

When his nephew has a day off from school, Uncle Willie invites him to spend the day helping him at the soup kitchen. Although hesitant at first, the young boy discovers, that in Uncle Willie's eyes, that the food collected from his neighborhood is not just food, but preparation for a feast. To Uncle Willie, the soup kitchen visitors aren't strangers. They are his guests.

You'll travel with Uncle Willie and he gathers donated food throughout the neighborhood. His enthusiasm is so contagious all along the way that you'll almost be able to smell the food cooking. Pay careful attention to the illustrations as every page offers a look into the spirit of the kitchen, who pays a visit, and the inner workings of a successfully run organization. You'll find bright posters, a cheery staff, and inviting table arrangements.

While the book is directed at children aged 4-8, anyone will come away with a positive feeling and enough working knowledge to get them started in volunteering.

To further discussions on hunger and poverty, you'll want to make sure to read the introduction. It's a good starting point for asking your local librarian for help in finding out more about the subject.

Adorable, clever and funny!
I love this book! If you know anything about fashion, you'll be tickled pink by Willie and her outfits and exploits. The drawings are great--clever and adorable, without being cutesy. Even though it's only May now, I'm going to buy a bunch to give as stocking-stuffers! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I hope that this is the beginning of a "Willie" series!

Fashionistas & Dog Lovers: YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE W/WILLIE!
Stadler does an exceptional job of illustrating his beloved, and oh-so-stylish Jack Russell Terrier, Willie, in this short read. His drawings are simple, yet capture the free-spiritedness that Jack Russell Terriers are notorious for. As a self-admitted slave to fashion, I love that Willie is wearing the latest and greatest from my favorite haute couture collections--from Gucci to Chloe. On each page, Willie's hilarious antics are brilliantly captured with clever text and the expressive illustrations that have made Stadler a success in the world design. This book is the perfect impromtu gift for all dog-lovers, Jack Russell Terrier enthusiasts, as well as your favorite fashionistas. Willie, the stylish dog-about-town, is sure to win your heart and bring a big smile to your face.

Fast-paced Reading!
This book makes you feel like you are side-by-side with Willie thru the planning, bank robberies, getaways, and even prison breaks. It is written in down-to-earth language and makes you feel like Willie is your buddy, and you are sitting there listening to him tell his story. Willie makes you feel like it was okay to rob the banks, and you find yourself rooting for him. It was amazing how his mind worked, so methodically planning breaking INTO the banks, and the same mindset is what helped him break OUT of prison.

"HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"

Where the Money Was
Where the Money Was by Willie Suton was an excellent book. It takes you through his crimes, escapes, and prison time. I would recomend it to anyone.

Lawton offers a true version of events
I came to Willie Boy through thesis research on Clara True, the then-Superintendent of the Morongo Reservation, upon which the "manhunt" occurs. I first read Sandos and Burgess' version of Willie Boy's murderous rampage, then found Lawton's book. I have also spoken personally with Harry Lawton while on a research trip to Southern California. I am convinced that Lawton's research is much more first-person, "on-the-ground" than S&B's work. Much of what Lawton offers jives with my own research on Clara True. I was also lucky enough to meet up with the great-granddaughter of the sheriff, deCrevecour, and she is able, through family history and photo albums, to confirm much of Lawton's version of events. As an adjunct college History professor, I am also planning to use *Willie Boy* as a text in my class this term, providing I can access enough copies for a class of 50. It is not easy to find much about Native-American/Anglo interaction and cultural misunderstandings in the more "modern" period and this is easily accessible material for college freshman. I recommend Lawton's *Willie Boy* as a mostly unbiased, factual account of thelast recorded manhunt of this nature.

With careful reading the true history is there
Lawton's book with the follow up book by Sandos and Burgess The Hunt for Willie Boy : Indian-Hating and popular culture are a great demonstration of the current important discussions of multiculturalism occuring on college campuses. History has been written by the victors and the victors have proven themselves to not look at the truth, but simply their opinion of what happened. It is a current trend to read between the lines and try to figure out the real history. This book was written in the late sixties and has been updated. Most people know of the movie with Robert Redford and Robert Blake, but the real story isn't complete in this book. It is important that the follow up book be read to logically come to a conclusion on the happenings in the early 1900's and the last great american posse

Willie brings to life the western sprit as only he can.

Such Entertainment
Only in the past few years have I begun to truly appreciate Louis L'Amour and his colorful stories of the wild west, good guys and bad guys. From the first moment of listening to this recording featuring the endearing and timeless voice of Willie Nelson, I was a fan for life of both the author and singer/songwriter and now narrator of audiobooks. Willie brings the characters Mr. L'Amour has created to full bloom, allowing the listener to take a step back in time to the days of the good, the bad and the ugly.

I Loved this recording, and plan on buying the full collection of Willie Nelson and his buddies, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash reading more of Louis L'Amour's novellas.

Willie Was Different

An absorbing children's story
Written and illustrated with color paintings by the late Norman Rockwell, one of America's most outstanding artists and illustrators, Willie Was Different is an absorbing children's story and features a young thrush whose tendency toward genius leads him to seek out a different life and sing the greatest songs he can. Inventive, emotional, and superbly characterized by Rockwell's uniquely expressive art, Willie Was Different is very highly recommended for both young readers, as well as the legions of Norman Rockwell fans whose work continues to enjoy an immense popularity from generation to generation.

Charming story by America's favorite illustrator
Willie Was Different is, of course, beautifully illustrated. It is a charming story about what it means to be a success and what is important in life.
