Very good, just like the other parts of the series
Mircea Eliade could be reasonably considered as one of the Re-founding Fathers of modern study of religion. His History of Religious Ideas is thus one of the corner stones of modern research in this field. This particular part of his history is as well written as the others. It deals very well with most of the improtant currents in mediaeval Christianity, including the spread of Christianity to Slav tribes, the Cluny rerform, the religious life associated with the rise of mendicant orders, Meister Eckhart, devotio moderna but he does not forget about the rise of neopaganism in Renaissance Italy, about the role of alchemy in religious feeling of the sixteenth century, he even ventures to say that modern physics was created almost unintentionally. This book is truly amazing.

There are also some down sides to the book. One, it cannot be taken as the "state-of-the-art" of religous study. Eliade has been surpassed by new research in the field. It is therefore better to use the book as a general background. Second, it has been shown that Eliade unfortunately developed the habit of sometimes stretching the truth to fit his analysis. He did not use this questionable method to such an extent as to render his whole analysis worthless but it does cast a shadow on his academic honesty.

BTW, I do not feel qualified to comment on his treatment of religious phenomena outside the Judeo-Christian cultural sphere.

Even 20 years later, this book seems so relevant
Iran had always fascinated me, and this book only adds to the intrigue. It is a fascinating case of how dictators (in this case the Shah) are an interesting mix of ignorant, cruel, coward, confused, appeasing and corrupt. Also, a good case of how people in their desperation to get away from one evil don't think twice about accepting the other evil.

I have seen several of Shah's family (in exile) on TV imploring their case to "serve their country". While I used to feel sympathy for them earlier, this book helped me understand why millions turned against their tyrannical rule.

The author claims that the Shah defrauded the State exchequer worth hundreds of millions of dollars by forcing banks to give him (and his family) huge loans (which remained unpaid), by running virtually all major corporations of Iran as personal business, and foolishly thinking of taking Iran back to its past glory.

This is also a telling tale of how the CIA virtually ran Iran during the Shah's reign. I would have liked a little more info on the Iran-Iraq war, but found it interesting to note that it was started by Shah's foolishness in dismissing Saddam, as incapable of taking him on.

Since this book was written only after 3 years of the Shah's departure, the author tends to have deep bias against him, and even some sympathy for the Islamicists led by Khomeini. It would be interesting to come across a book on Iran where there is a comparison between Shah's rule and the Islamic rule. However, it is a great starting point to learn the modern history of a country with tremendous potential to be a world leader.

Jean Genet in Tangier
Published in Paperback by Ecco (1990)
Authors: Mohamed Choukri, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, and Muhammad Shukri
Amazon base price: $7.95
Used price: $6.95
Average review score:

Delightfully crisp prose
This book details the encounters of Choukri with Jean Genet in Tangier over a short period of time. The prose describing the encounters and the selection of details to include in the description is masterful - in a slim volume one gains both a feeling of Morocco's bureaucrats, of the author's respect for Genet and of Genet himself. There is no hint of "gossip column" or "me with a big shot" - both of which are dangers for this type of writing. This is book is well worth your time.

Jesus: A Prophet of Islam

Historcial Information
Rahim, I think does a real good job in obtaining information and displaying it in a historical sense. The great part of the book is he is not showing too much biasim and he just gives a lot of light to certain subjects regarding Christianity. I would recommend this book to anyone who considers themself a real bibical scholar. The material is great all the way until the end where he starts putting a Islamic spin on the bible.

Beautiful, distinctive Persian literature
A wonderfully distinctive and beautifully written example of ancient Persian literature. It is a must read for ages 10 and up. The stories have interesting, action-packed plots and end by showing a good moral. They have a variety of different human and animal characters. The book also includes many gorgeous Persian-style illustrations. It is a bit like Aesop's Fables, only better.I hope that anyone who reads this great book will enjoy it as much as I have!

My first intro to the Prophet's life
This is a wonderful book for those new or unaware of the Prophet's life. The book contains colorful pictures that keep the children interested throughout. I read it the first time when I was in 2nd grade and finished it in 3 days. The language is very simple and clear. The layout and designing is beautiful too. I love this book and if the authors ever see this review, thank you for helping me learn about the prophet through your words.
