Beautiful overview of pulp cover art
I puchased this book for 50% off, and after reading it, I can say that even at full price, it would have been worth it. Page after page of bright clear reproductions of pulp covers, many almost full-page, with any extra space filled with smaller images. The book is divided into chapters based on subject matter: Westerns, Super Heroes, Sci-Fi, Horror, Gangsters, etc. The text is informative, but minimal - it provides just enough background on each chapter's subject and then lets the art speak for itself. Each cover is accompanied with information on the issue and artist, plus some informative personal commentary from the author. Plenty of top-notch artists are included, such as Wyeth, Baumhofer, etc. Don't buy this for an in-depth analysis of pulp magazines; the star here is definitely the art, and it delivers in spades.

Presenting the most beautiful of cover art
The world of pulp fiction graphics is extensive: there are examples numbering in the millions. In Pulp Culture, the authors have selected the finest examples from the era of pulp magazines and publications, presenting the most beautiful of cover art and accompanying these large-size reproductions and full-page spreads with a running history of pulp publishing. The result promises wide appeal to not only graphic artists and fans of pulp publishing but general-interest readers.

Wonderful book of popular culture
This book is a celebration of a unique American body of art and an important part of our popular culture. The pulps were a major form of entertainment with their vibrant covers by artists largely unknown or now forgotten.

The focus is on the art with several large color illustrations per page. It is fantastic, bold & colorful, it's purpose being to generate excitement & sell books. The text gives a history of the pulps and their artists & writers.

Several themes predominate on the pulp covers. There are westerns, detectives, sports, war & jungle stories, aviation, risqué women & damsels in distress. This is also where some of the best early science fiction art is found.

There is a helpful section of information for collectors and all of the books illustrated are coded for relative value. This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in popular art, Americana or collectibles.

Reliability: Probabilistic Models and Statistical Methods
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (20 December, 1994)
Author: Lawrence M. Leemis
Amazon base price: $92.00
Used price: $75.17

The definitive introduction to reliability analysis
This is THE seminal text on reliability analysis. The author writes with the same crystal clarity he uses to present material at technical conferences. The exercises are carefully graded to lead the diligent reader toward steadily deepening understanding of the material. All diagrams are clear, cogent, carefully annotated, and well keyed to accompanying text. The definition and explanations of cut sets are especially good, allowing the engineer or analyst to economically reduce a complex problem to a set of smaller, more mathematically tractable problems. Also, this work does an excellent job of ramping the reader's knowledge upward from the justifiably assumes prerequisite of basic statistics learned in one introductory class presumably having a calculus prerequisite.

Excellent presentation of Reliability Math
I have to give it to this author, he has a very high assumption of math. If you are not a math wiz but can comprehend Calculus, this book is beyond outstanding. I will give the reader the necessary math methods for achieving you reliability analysis correctly. I spent alot of time going through these calcs and doing the proofs they are with out a dought right on the money. The boo is packed full of wonderful examples and methods. Kudos to the author.

Outstanding!
This is definitely the best text on Reliability Engineering that I've seen. Leemis really brings the material to life in a way that I have not seen replicated in the other texts that I have perused. For a first introduction to Reliability, I cannot think of a better text. The reader should have a solid foundation in mathematical statistics, however, before starting on this volume. An adequate resource for building this foundation is Larson and Marx's "Introduction to Mathematical Statistics". Especially make sure you understand the basics of maximum-likelihood, as Leemis emphasizes it in his derivations -- the more advanced stuff you'll learn about in his book, however.

As an aside, I have actually taken Leemis' class, and I can honestly say that I learned more about probability from his lectures and the text than I ever previously thought possible. Again, I highly recommend the text.

I WONDER WHY THEY DIDN'T MAKE IT ON CD-ROM AS WELL? IMEAN THAT'S WHAT THE IS USE NOW.IN THE FURTURE THAT WOULD BE NICE.

well suited for families but students need headings
This is an excellent dictionary and well suited for family reference. I recommend it highly. At the same time, if you are student looking for a solid Bible dictionary you really do need something that has page headings to let you know immediately where you are to help you find the article more quickly. I would recommend in this case a dictionary like Nelson's Bible Dictionary, or Holman's Bible Dictionary which are both excellent for students. (This comment was somehow omitted from my previous review.)

an excellent choice for a family Bible dictionary
This is a very beautifully illustrated and interesting dictionary. It is so interesting in fact, that you don't really read it like a dictionary. Instead of just looking up different terms that you don't understand, you tend to read it like you would read a very interesting book that you leave on display on your coffee table for guests to peruse. It contains study guides for each book of the Bible, summaries, outlines, and gives the historical significance and impact of each book as well. It is written in a style that is very easy to understand so it is w

A Slight Momentary Affliction
Lawrence Dorr creates the most unforgettable characters! Each and every one leads to a better understanding of the world and a greater acceptance of others. The stories in this collection are filled with extraordinary kindnesses that always seem to come when we least expect it; but more importantly, Dorr shows the reader the only way to transcend the limitations of the physical world. I love this writer and only want to say PLEASE MR. DORR, GIVE US MORE, MORE, MORE.

haunting stories about W.W. II show reverence for life
These twelve stories reflect the experiences and emotions Hungarian-born writer Lawrence Dorr suffered in his war-torn homeland before and during World War II , and after his move to America. As a young lad, Dorr faced the Germans, was posted on the front in excruciating cold, was wounded, found his family killed, and his ancestral home consfiscated. After making a daring escape from the Communists, he wandered throughout Europe holding a variety of jobs, from working a loom in a British cotton mill to being a teacher. These situations are the details and threads by which Dorr weaves stories that tell of the anguish he suffered as an exile. They also illustrate in graphic detail the horror people can perpretrate on others, and on a country, in the name of patriotism and honor. Because the revelations about human nature in these stories are so honest, they are often difficult to read and/or accept, but the reader leaves them wiser and more aware of God's grace. Dorr's characters and plots reveal a love and humanity that heals. Simple and kind acts extended to someone physically or emotionally wounded reveal that good exists, even if given by those who seemingly have lost all dignity. In other stories, Dorr shows the redemptive values of family, nature, worship, and even domestic rituals. In that sense, Dorr is a religious writer. His peace comes from an unshakable knowledge that God is good and that mercy is a gift. Door's writing is spare, lean, and masculine. A gifted writer, his images, descriptions, and writing style attest to his extensive knowledge of and familiarity with the classics, music, and art. It is no wonder that Dorr was nominated for a a Pulitzer prize in fiction. His writings and characters speak of anger, intrigue, passion, humor, love, and friendships. This book is compelling. Dorr is one of America's finest writers of fiction

Excellent
Dorr is a master of prose with his powerful images and poignant topics. His word structure alone is impressive. These are some of the best twentieth century American stories I have read.

The Soul's Journey: Guidance from the Divine Within

Walking the Walk
At last! A book on the spiritual path written by someone who has walked the walk instead of just talking the talk. Edwards' descriptions of personal revelations by the Goddess, dating from his early childhood, give clarity, inspiration and hope to all those yearning in their lives for a closer connection with the divine. This book inspires awe at the infinite beauty, grace and love which has flowed from the Goddess in Her many forms directly to the author's mind and soul. Just as importantly, though, it is a sobering reminder of the challenges, struggles and dangers of the spiritual quest which arise from the darkness of our own shadow side, and which we must continually acknowledge, confront and release in order ultimately to open ourselves fully to the ever-present divine love and grace enfolding us. We see that these revelations, both positive and negative, were the product of years of intense and serious cultivation under the tutelage of a truly enlightened Master. Such devotion and perseverance, especially in the face of inner demons and outer tribulations, are the inevitable offerings necessary eventually to bear the ecstatic spiritual fruit that it has been the author's delight to have experienced. But what is also impressive is the sense throughout that the author sees himself as a human being, like the rest of us, working to get through daily life and dealing with the myriad confusions, vices, and temptations that plague us all. His commitment to confront these issues as consciously as possible is what makes this book, and his example, accessible as a "better way" to deal with our own issues. It also gives the hope that, by following this "better way", we may ourselves one day personally experience the loving presence and guidance of the Goddess just as he has. This book, and especially the chapter presenting the allegory of "The Bird of a Thousand Lights", came at an especially critical point in my own spiritual development. Reading that chapter brought an immediate intuitive sense of recognition. Being able to identify with the protagonist on his quest and to see clearly both where I stood in my own journey, and what the path ahead held for me, lent tremendous encouragement at a time when my situation seemed at a low ebb. As a long time follower of the spiritual path, I have often "found" a book which, after reading it, I knew was the "right book at the right time". "The Soul's Journey" was one such book for me, and I trust that it will be for many other "seekers" as well. I highly recommend it!

This Soul's Journey
I deeply appreciate the journey which reading Lawrence Edward's book began for me which continues now almost a year later. The images and concepts outlined in the stories he told became metaphors for my own personal journey of self discovery which I have found most enlightening and personally gratifiying.

I think the path to self awareness is many and varied and often fraught with false starts and distractions. This book helped me recognize some of my own false starts and encouraged me to maintain my own focus and delve within rather than seeking beyond my own experience and truth for answers.

The language is accessible and jargonless which was quite a relief from similar texts on the subject. I also enjoyed the linkages to modern analytical and humanistic psychology as a means for grounding the concepts of energy and kundalini and consciousness in a familiar paradigm for most Westerners like myself.

I look forward his next book.

An Extraordinary Encounter With The Divine
After seeing the Goddess in his childhood, years later, while sitting in a meditation hall, Dr. Edwards has six consecutive visions of six different forms of the Goddess prior to Kali lighting up his inner space with one cosmic revelation after another, culminating in profound realizations and a message from Kali.

The Goddess then directs him to share her "gift" to him with others by writing it all down and getting it published. He is shown in visions what to write along with commentaries by the Goddess, presented to him as scenes in his mind. Dr. Edwards is just as amazed as his readers will be, and humbled by his cosmic visitations from Kali. Moreover, his surprise and humility at being "chosen" by the Divine give his words a solid ring of truth.

Dr. Edwards extraordinary encounter with the Divine is one of the most impressive and inspiring books I have ever read about Kundalini. Perhaps devotion to the Mother Goddess is the highest path to fully awakening Kundalini with a Mother's Love guiding you safely home.

Stacked Deck: A Story of Selfishness in America (America in Transition)

An exceptionally well-thought-out exposition on fairness.
Mitchell asks the question each and every one of us should ask ourselves at every opportunity, "Why do we treat the obviously vulnerable as different and vulnerability as pathological?" Then he states what should be obvious but is decidedly not: "A society that cares for your child will be a society in which your child cares for others." This book deserves a wide audience.

Stacked Deck is a must read!
Larry Mitchell has written a heartfelt and compassionate book that sucessfully debunks the American myth of self-reliance at all costs. If you have ever wondered why we have lost a sense of community, why the rich get richer while others do not, or why we have lost the valuable human connections that make life worth living, you must read his book. Mitchell adeptly shows why we are all vulnerable in some way and why we should care about the less fortunate -- who have had the deck stacked against them by our institutions and our thoughtless devotion to self-reliance. Stacked Deck is a must read. If we pay attention to Mitchell's argument, we might make a more compassionate world.

Read this book because you care.
Some authors, in effort to strengthen their own message, try and impress the reader with intellectual jargon. Instead, it puts many readers to sleep (and the book back on the shelf). Other authors, in effort to attract a broader audience, dilute their message with simple prose and, unfortunately, simplistic ideas. Mitchell's recipe for success is his ability to toe the line without reducing the impact of his message. This book should be read by every person who is not an Ivy League graduate, a country club member, or a BMW owner--and, more importantly, this book should be read by every person who is.

Enough Love to Go Around
Robert is an only child and he is used to having his mother all to himself. One day Robert's mother announces that Stevie will be coming to stay with them while his mother is working during the week and Robert is not happy. Robert gets jealous of the attention the younger Stevie (who Robert considers a crybaby) gets from his parents and hates the fact that he has to share his toys, friends and everything else with Stevie. Robert cannot wait until Stevie's mother comes to pick him up at the end of the week, or can he?

Stevie was published by John Steptoe when he was only nineteen years old. He expertly captures the feelings many children have when they have to share things or attention with a younger child or sibling. Check out Stevie, for a humorous story that most anyone can relate to.

Stevie
Stevie, written and illustrated by John Steptoe when he was only 16 yrs. old, was the inauguration of a wonderful career as a children's author for Mr. Steptoe. All of his books are heartfelt, compassionate, richly illustrated, and can bridge the gap among all races; he was doing the multicultural thing well before it was "multicultural"ly defined and politically correct. Stevie fits in with our current PC climate without coming off as trendy and purposeful. It simply tells a tale of a young boy, Stevie, who is sent to stay with an older boy and his family while Stevie's mother works at her new job. The older boy, Robert, resents the intrusion of Stevie in his life. Always tagging along, getting footprints on the bedcovers, and acting "like a baby" to Robert's mother, Stevie is the classic irritating but innocent little brother who, in the end will be sorely missed by Robert when Stevie's mother finally comes to take him back home with her. As a young white reader who grew up in a very white world, this book, about two African-American boys, was always my very favorite children's book not only because of the stunning illustration, but because of the commonality and familiarity this book held with me: it could have easily been my story. And it could have been any story for any child anywhere. I loved the fact that it was introduced at a time when race relations needed bridging and commonalities needed awareness. It is a book for the ages.

Exciting Story with Interesting Setting
The colorful Florida east coast locations create a very interesting setting for this exciting and suspenseful story. Of special note is the central role played by the small town of Cassadaga, a place largely inhabited by Spiritualists. Their belief in the continuation of life beyond the grave and their attempts to communicate with inhabitants of the "spirit world" are key elements in this mystery. I liked it a lot.

Unusual Story of the Supernatural
This book was especially interesting to me as it describes an area of Florida with which I was very familiar -- except that I had never been to the Spiritualist village of Cassadaga near DeLand. It was fascinating to read the detailed descriptions of this place and to see how the author wove this material into a suspenseful tale that involves the search for a dead girl's true identity and an attempt to bring a serial killer of young women to justice. I also found the two protagonists, a 71-year-old retiree and a young female TV reporter, to be very attractive and well-defined characters. I enjoyed this book very much.

Suspenseful and Intriguing Supernatural Mystery
"The Surrounding: A Spectral Mystery" is a unique blend of suspense, mystery and the supernatural. Set in real and familiar Central Florida locations, including Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach and the Orlando area, it also involves the small Spiritualist community of Cassadaga. Ev Chambers, one of the protagonists, is a 71-year-old "spiritual counselor and medium" and through him we enter the colorful and unusual world of Spiritualism. The author has an effective way of making the "otherworldly" seem perfectly plausible through his use of specific, everyday details. The other protagonist, Katie O'Hara, is a traffic reporter for a local Orlando television station. She is a very attractive character who becomes obsessed with finding out the truth of sister she never knew she had -- one who now seems to be reaching out to her from "the other side." A very good read.
