Italian Pleasures

Authors: David Leavitt and Mark Lindsey Mitchell
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

NOT AN ORDINARY TRAVEL BOOK
I am very sorry to learn that this small, beautifully put together
book is out of print. If you have ever vacationed in or worked in or
simply visited Italy or if you have dreamed about doing it, you'll
want to, somehow, find this book. Leavitt and Mitchell have collected
famous writers thoughts on Italy (D.H. Lawrence, Nellie Melba, John
Ruskin, Mark Twain, etc.) and then written down their own wonderful
musings: (What makes an Italian ragu?, The thing that Italian boys do
better than any other boys in the world, Is there a cure for chicken
pox?, Speaking "opera" Italian, et al). This is a charming
& fascinating book which ... is definitely not an ordinary Travel
book. This is a book about living in Italy and loving and relishing
every moment and sharing those moments with us. I hope Chronicle
Books is smart and generous enough to reprint it or, perhaps, publish
a paperback edition.

Journal, Volume 3
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (01 February, 1991)
Authors: Henry David Thoreau, Robert Sattelmeyer, Mark R. Patterson, and William Rossi
Amazon base price: $85.00
Average review score:

A day by day look at Thoreau
"Oct. 22nd, 1837. 'What are you doing now?' he asked, 'Do you keep a journal?'-- So I make my first entry today." Thus begins Thoreau's Journal, made up of more then two million words and covering about twenty-five years of his life. No other work of Thoreau's better exhibits his discipline as a writer and his devotion to the natural world. In the Journal can be found the fragmented foundations of masterpieces such as Walden, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, The Maine Woods, and Cape Cod. But what is perhaps more interesting to a reader of Thoreau's Journal are his thoughts and insights on topics such as friendship, love, religion, nature, bravery, heroism, war, slavery, the art of writing, and, most important to Thoreau, the art of living. Anyone with any interest in Thoreau will find his Journal to be an invaluable aid in understanding and following the life of one of America's most profound prose writers

The Best Book On Nephrology
I am an internist. During my residency years, I diecovered this book. It made me a distinguished resident in nephrology in a remarkably short time. Nephrology is the most complicated branch of internal medicine but this book has made it unbelievebly easy, meaningful and attractive. It is specialy written for those who want to learn complex issues as soon as possible.

The Marks of a Cult: The Warning Signs of False Teachings
Published in Paperback by Harvest House Publishers, Inc. (1998)
Authors: David Breese and Dave Breese
Amazon base price: $8.99
Average review score:

David hits the Mark
Dave Breese hits the mark with this work, written from the point of view of a Bible Believing Evangelical Christian. He defines ten areas where most false teachers deviate from Biblical Christianity. By studying this book and comparing a religious group to it, you can easily tell if the group you are examining follows the basic tennents of Christianity or if it a false cult which should be avoided. For example, if a group denied the Diety of Jesus Christ, Breese would classify that group as a false cult. Dave and I come from different denominations, but I agree that his teachings on this subject are right on the mark. This book is written for High School age and up.

Very interesting read!
The concepts in this book continue to make me contemplate my beliefs. Pally offers a cutting-edge look at the relationship between neuroscience and psychoanalysis. Though it is elegantly filled with detail, the concepts are easily accessible and engaging. Certainly a must read for anyone interested in the conscience and the brain.

Authors: David S. Butler and Mark A. Jones
Amazon base price: $83.00
Average review score:

An excellent text for the novice and experienced clinician
The text "Mobilisation of the Nervous System" is an excellent text for both the novice and experienced Physical Therapist. I bought this book to review for the Orthopedic Clinical Specialist exam, and have found it very helpful. The text does an excellent job of describing general anatomical and physiological reasoning behind commonly used evaluation and treatment techniques, as well as describing these techniques in detail. The illustrations and descriptions are good, so that if you are not practiced at these techniques you will be able to clearly see the proper postioning that is required. I would recommend this text for anyone who wants to update their clincal skills or for new Physical Therapists that want to learn more about this aspect of Physical Therapy.

Mr. Churchill's Tank: The British Infantry Tank Mark IV
Published in Hardcover by Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. (1999)
Author: David Fletcher
Amazon base price: $45.00

First-rate and long overdue account
Mr Churchill's Tank - The British Infantry Tank Mk IV by David Fletcher 210 pages, large format hardback, fully illustrated.

During the Second World War, the British Army operated three classes of tanks. The Light and medium-weight Cruiser classes generally corresponded in their intended roles with those of other nations. However, in the heavier class, Britain used the Infantry Tank. This was designed purely for support of infantry in the attack, and was designed to be move at the general pace of a foot soldier, while its armour was usually heavier so as to be able to withstand anti tank fire as it moved forward. While four types of this tank were produced, the third - the Valentine - was used at times in a cruiser role, but the last was definitely an Infantry Tank. The Churchill was born out of an planned design which would have acted in a similar manner to the first heavy tanks of the Great War. Times had changed however, and with them the need for the original design. Vauxhall Motors were asked to design and act as developer and technical experts on the new series, which first appeared at a time when Britain's tank recourses and general fortunes were at a low ebb. It was built without the usual cycle of building and testing prototypes, which meant that when first introduced into service it had many problems to be overcome. From then on, the tank's fortunes waxed and waned. It came close to being taken out of production more than once, only to be reprieved and improved before finally becoming a useful vehicle in the field in its intended role and some new ones. Its story is very complicated, and intertwined with that of British tank development at this period. While it has been written about before, some of what has appeared has missed some points or left details out. This makes the coverage here all the more valuable. David Fletcher is ideally placed, not only as one of Britain's leading authors on tank matters with a thirst for knowledge and an ability to pass that knowledge on in a very readable manner, but as Librarian and Curator at the Tank Museum he has ready access to a store of information on the Churchill and related matters. He follows the tank from its early beginnings, through development, user trials, problems in service and their resolution, improvements and modifications. Much light is shed on other matters such as development of tank armament, as well as the often conflicting demands and sometimes confusion and interference in design and production. Some interesting might-have-beens and even some areas not well documented are included. As tank development is always a continuing tale, he also describes the original "shelled area" tank which spawned Churchill and ends with Black Prince, a sort of Super Churchill, which appeared in time to be made unnecessary by the replacement of two streams of tanks by one, universal design. Not only is the story of the machines themselves told, but also its actions, from a less than auspicious debut at Dieppe through more successful use in Tunisia, then through North West Europe and Italy, on to its final deployment in Korea. Details, sadly still sketchy after many years and much change, of its use in Russia and peacetime service in Australia and Eire, are also included. Churchills were not only used as gun tanks. Many were converted or built as specialist armour, which wisely are not covered here apart from the unusual 3" Gun Carrier. This leaves the way open for a full and detailed study of them at a later date, allowing more detail to be included in areas not usually covered. Some unusual field modifications are however covered. Alongside a text which should be read closely as it contains a wealth of detail which could easily be missed, are a fine collection of photographs of the many versions produced, including views in the factory and of such things as the turret basket separate from the tank, and many photos of the tanks in action. Even more detail is shown using original stowage diagrams and extracts from various handbooks to show specific components. While most wartime British armour had a bad press, and the Churchill itself had some adverse comments, it generally came through with a good reputation. Its full story has had to wait a long time to be told, but now it has been brought into the light in good form in a book which deserves a worthy place among studies of major armoured vehicles.

The Mule Train: A Journey of Hope Remembered
Published in Paperback by Rutledge Hill Press (1998)
Authors: Roland L. Freeman and David B. Levine
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

It captured the peoples dreams and hopes for equality.
I was impressed at the magnificent way that this book brought to light the struggle and dreams of the Mule Train participants. Their beleifs that what was transpiring would make a difference, not just for them, but for all of America. The committment of Mr. Willie Bolden, tasked with the responsibility to see that all went well. His determination and others that dispite several roadblocks insured all travelers were taken care of. The reporting by Jean Pond-Smith showed the realness of this movement without being bias or prejudicial. Her capture of the spirit of the travelers were enligntening and heartwrenching. This book brought home to me many memories that I had long ago moved to the back of mind. That I, along with with mother and three of my sisters were a part of this moment in history.
