How To Create A Media Conglomerate From Scratch!
Many have watched with dismay as conglomerates have gobbled up an increasing number of media companies. This collaborative effort between the New Press and New York University's (NYU) Departments of Culture and Communications, Education, and Journalism addresses that concern. Experts ranging from practitioners to academics were invited to participate in a lecture series hosted by NYU in 1996. Edited versions of their talks appear in this volume. An introduction by media scholar Todd Gitlin is followed by nine individually authored chapters covering media activities from radio and television to newspapers and book publishing. Surveying changes in telecommunications, Aufderheide (communication, American Univ.) calls for public vigilance and a middle ground between the apocalyptic doomsayers and those who believe the new age of communication has dawned. This book will be of value to media scholars as well as to citizens following this issue.

How To Create A Media Conglomerate From Scratch

This book is quite insightful, especially for a Southeast Asian media professional like myself. I recommend this book to everyone, even to those who work in the upper regions of the power sturcture of the media conglomerates critiqued in the collection.

For starters, it is a wonderful overview of how the media economy is shifting all over the world. The US market is saturated, as the book said, and the rest of the world is ripe for picking, especially my country, the Philippines.

This book is a tool to launch our own media analysis of what's happenning in our own countries. And from an analysis, we launch a critique, and from a critique, we launch steps to face the situation.

This book, published by New Media, is invaluable. I first read about it in an issue of Utne Reader. I took down the title and hunted it down in Amazon. I found it, bought it, and consumed it. I loved it because it gave me useful insights to work with.

This is a book I will dog-ear in my attempts to understand what to do in my field, and how to start my own media conglomerate from scratch. I already have my ideas, which I hope aren't just soundbites in my head.

Essays providing insight into a growing area of concern.
It is difficult to read Conglomerates and not be alarmed at the growing media control by a few major companies. The book begins with an insightful introduction by noted scholar Todd Gitlin and includes essays from Mark Crispin Miller (Johns Hopkins scholar and author of Boxed In) and David Leiberman (USA Today), among other prominent writers. One discrepency occurs with Lieberman's piece: it is listed in the table of contents as "Conglomerates, News, and Children", but in the chapter it is referred to as "Conglomerates, News, and the Media," leaving the reader to decide the correct version. This book is a must have if you want to gain an understanding of what's happening with media monopolies; Bagdikian fans rejoice! However, it is not chalk full o' references, so students looking for cites to follow may be disappointed. In the introduction, Gitlin echos an earlier statement by Niel Postman (author of Amusing Ourselves to Death): "Big Brother isn't looming, Brave New World is."

Brilliant!
A delightful review of the world of Doctor Who as it stood in the 1970's. It includes many rare pictures from the series as well as publicity shots and behind-the-scenes photos. From Adams, Douglas to Zygons (Terror of), this is a wonderfully produced Master-piece! A truly great book for all Doctor Who fans!

the sixties is a true masterpiece
I've just read this wonderful book and it is WELL worthe reading so dont think twice about buying this book

If you love Who -- then get this book
This is my favorite non-fiction Doctor Who book of all time. The book is loaded with some never before seen footage and insightful data. The layout is wonderful and captures the decade that brought us Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. My favorite chapter of the book features merchandise from the 70's -- so far the only Who book that addresses this aspect of the show.

Sensible Approach To a Difficult Problem
Dr. Marks, a Migraine specialist and his wife, a pediatrician and wonderful cook, make quite a team with this book. Normally elimination diets to determine Migraine triggers are grueling, but they have made it much easier. This is FAR MORE than a cook book. Dr. Marks offers expert insight into Migraine disease and coping with it. Thank you, Dr. Marks!

Medicine For Your Stomach
Like most headache sufferers, I'd do anything to get rid of my migranes.

While I knew that food had a big impact on headaches, I didn't know much about it. This book provides all the answers including which foods to eat and which to avoid. Then the book offers "headache-free" recipes which is a must if you like to eat many of the "banned" foods.

The recipes I've tried so far have been outstanding and relatively easy to make. I can honestly say that, at least for now, I look forward to making something new every night.

It was comforting for me that the book was written by two medical doctors including Dr. David Marks, a Yale educated headache specialist. I find that most non-medical solutions to medical problems come from nutritionists who lack the professional training and education of a doctor.

While I don't believe food is the only source of headaches, understanding the food-headache relationship is important. The results speak for themselves...since reading this book, I've definitly had fewer and less severe headaches.

so easy to use, no wonder i didn't burn the kitchen down
besides not finding a couple exotic ingredients at the local kroger- not a serious enough cook to order them- this book is absolutely, perfectly, marvelous! it's fun and easy to use and helps me to score when i invite a lady-friend over (or a guy friend). what else can you ask for out of a cookbook?

Making Your Kitchen Delightfully Global
This is a remarkably coherent and inviting book: it holds together as an actual workbook in the kitchen, as a compendium of user-friendly recipes to take us around the world, and as a concept. No surprises here. David Ricketts for years has been a food journalist and a cook, i.e. traveling, running test kitchens, and mastering the editorial arts of food writing and recipe preparation. These skills are everywhere at work in Home Cooking. For example, each recipe begins with "a basic recipe that is familiar to the American home cook," such as chicken noodle soup or bread pudding. Then the variations (Vietnamese Chicken Soup with Asian herbs and vegetables; bread baked with cream, eggs, coconut milk, and candied ginger). But Ricketts goes one step further. As he puts it, he's less interested in creating a "chemical reaction" and more concerned to explore how international "home cooking" is woven into the textures of people's everyday lives; his recipes are "a window" through which we "catch a glimpse of a culture, whether our own or another." Thus the method--to begin with a "known" or "familiar" dish and to go from there. (A helpful glossary and set of notes on ingredients is helpful here.)

As a compass for international culinary voyaging the book is sensibly formatted and arranged; you get to your destinations and eating adventures composed and happy. Chapters cover poulty, beef, pork and lamb, seafood, vegetables, and desserts. Methods of cooking tend to favor one pot dishes (lots of soups, stews, braisings, and baked items), but the simplicity and variety is astonishing (some of my favorites: chicken legs in basque red pepper-prosciutto sauce; "Jansson's temptation" [a Danish edition of scalloped potatoes with anchovies, Vidalia onions, cream, and fennel seeds]; spicy corn and lima beans with tomato; baked honey-glazed mackerel; whew!). As I've been known to say to friends and family when I'm serving something I know they're going to moan over, "Grab it and growl, yo!"

The Affinities in the World's Home Cooking
I tasted some recipes from this cookbook at a friend's dinner and found them delicious and comforting. Looking at the recipes, I was thrilled by the premise of the selected recipes that based on similar fundmentals, even ingredients, the results can turn out tasting entirely different from one culture to the next. Particualrly apropos in a multicultural United States, Mr. Ricketts enables an American raised on our Beef Stew to make with the slightest changes, cross oceans resulting in a Vietnamese Beef Stew with Carrots and Star Anise. This wonderful cookbook truly expresses the shared humanity of us all in a delicious way.

The Last Avengers Story

SPOILER ALERT!!!
Don't read this review unless you've read this tpb already! This was an excellent story about a possible future of the Avengers. Although the art is great and the plot dramatic (dramatic in a good way), some of the scenes were predictable (the last page for instance). This is all made up for though with the explanation of the Hulk's death, as well as Kang's death (even though he probably wouldn't have really died due to the device he uses [read Avenger's Forever TPB]).
The whole Ultron in charge thing was good, as was the blood and tragedy thing of a certain brother and sister. My only problem with this story: Where is Iron Man? Still, 5 stars for dropping that bomb on Avengers HQ.

One of the Best "Future" Stories I have read
Much better than any of the X-Men future stories. Peter David is unquestionably one of the best mainstream writers going and has been for some time.

This is a dark and gritty story and people die, It is somewhat related to "Earth X" in the way people have changed but this version of the future is darker and easier to get a handle on. Highest rating.

superb alternate avengers story.
one of the greatest avengers stories of all time.set in a "what if?" type of story.this rotates around the avengers of the future and their last stand. a great read.

A great second book for author Alexandria Altman
I really liked reading this book. I have read Alexandria Altman's first book "John Carpenter Speaks Out", also a very good book. Easy to read and to the point. I look forward to reading "Mission Possible" #2 and on. Also I look froward to any other of Ms. Altman's books. I feel we will be seeing her as a bestseller in the near future.

Amazing Book On Success
It is an amazing book. I really like the way that each of the 12 authors shared how they achieved success. It is easy to read and filled with lots of useful information. You can pick it up and read a chapter in 30 minutes and have practical ideas to apply now! It really motivated me to become more successful. Anyone wishing to be more successful should buy this book and apply the principles. I am and it is paying dividends!

Learning from the Masters.
... This is the book for you. Fast-paced interviews with successful individuals can be a great encouragement. Such is the information contained in Mission Possible! Barry Banther's inspirational chapter is worth the price of the book alone. You will have your favorite chapter I am sure. This is truly "on-the-job-training" for living.

Great Book
I thought the book was outstanding.. I keep buying extra copies which I have given to my mom, my sister, my friends, and the principal of our school. The book describes each one of us too well. I have three children and the stress and competition for these kids is 10 times that of when I was a child. If I can follow any advice from Dr. Marks, my children will benefit greatly. I thank him for writing such a down to earth and amazingly true book.

Great Advice on Child Burnout
As a parent, I find it hard not to keep up with the Jones'. A typical Saturday for my seven year old girl may start out with a soccer game, followed by a mid-day birthday party and a three-hour afternoon playdate. It's no wonder that my little girl is whiny, clingy and exhausted by nightfall. All she wants to do is veg in front of the TV or play alone with her dolls.

Dr. Marks book made me aware of the consequences of these actions which is the key to good parenting. Dr. Marks is trying to say, "hey, sometimes it's OK not to keep up with the Jones's".

I read the book the first time in two nights and have referred to it a half a dozen times since. It's a real eye opener and definitely recommend it for parents.

Raising Stable Kids in an Unstable World
What an enlightening book from the enjoyable anecdotes to the informative, positive and eye opening solutions to coping and ridding our children of stress in today's environment. Our parents had Dr. Spock. We are lucky to have Dr. Marks. This book is a must read for all parents.

Abnormal Psychology With Infotrac: An Integrative Approach

DSM-IV explained (maybe).
Using DSM-IV criteria throughout, the authors manage to provide a succinct analysis of psychopathology, as seen from a transtheoretical perspective.

The research alone quoted throughout makes this book a valuable resource, but combined with an engaging writing style and top-notch structure, it promises to secure Barlow and Durand's position as authors-to-beat when it comes to the field of Abnormal Psychology.

Great Introductory book
Very thorough treatment of the subject from well rounded, expert authors. Text assumes no previous knowledge, and is quite lengthy because of its comprehensive nature. I have used it many times as a reference text after taking a course in which it was required.

Also this text is an example of a beautiful job of "book making". The text has many color plates -- and a high quality printing job.

A great gift book
I read The Acrobat and The Angel to my 3 year old daughter last night. It moved me to take action. 1)I am sending the book today to my best friend in Texas who has just lost a close family member. I hope it will help heal her heart. 2) I am getting my own copy of the book (we had gotten it from our library). and 3) I am going to tell lots of folks about the book. The Shannon brothers are wonderful. Both the story and the illustrations are touching. I dug in to all the illustrations to see the symbols used in the frames for each page - very telling! I also noted the two pages without frames and thought about what David Shannon was saying, putting his drawings there without "limits". Get it! Read it! Give it!

Beautiful! For adults and children alike.
My 6 year old daughter recieved this book for christmas and as a rule, I try to read each book myself, before reading it to her. Well, being the sensitive kind, I cried...twice! Please, don't NOT get this book, thinking that it is too sad. My daughter loved it! And she did not cry, but more importantly she asked questions about Pequele's life. (ie: "What is the plague?", and "Why was that monk mean to Pequele?", "Is Pequele an angel now?". This opened doors for me, on subjects that every child eventually arrives at. I feel that this book touches more than the heart. It tells a child that he/she can endure through even the hardest of times. It shows them that, even though there is death, there is learning. I also felt that it was more spiritual than it was religious. To me, this is very important, in showing the world to my very observant 6 year old. Trully deep.
