Confusing sequence and typos characterize this book :-(
Granted; XSLT and XPATH in particular aren't easy to cope with, but I did never find the "key" to the sequence of material in this book. Especially XPATH must be covered better, since XPATH are so central in XSLT.

When you also find typos, such as not well-formed XML in the examples, you waste time to figure out if the XML itself is correct or not.

In short, I didn't like this book.

An informative and accessible overview
Michael Floyd's Special Edition Using XSLT starts with an informative and accessible overview clearly explaining how XSLT fits into the bigger picture of the Extensible Stylesheet Language, and the differences between XSLT and XSL-FO. Special Edition Using XSLT then demonstrates practical examples of XSL transformations from XML to a variety of other useful formats including HTML, PDF, SVG and others. Later chapters discuss developer techniques for implementing XSLT within dynamic web environments including ASP and JSP. Flyod also covers debugging techniques and how XSLT relates to .NET. Highly recommended for beginning to intermediate level users, Special Edition Using XSLT then concludes with a useful reference section including detailed coverage of XSLT, XPath and XSL-FO. 480 pages.

Not worth twice the price of Attics (Quick Guides).
Published by the same press as "Attics" (Creative Homeowner Press) this book has lovely color illustrations, but adds little to the simpler book.

Things We Never Knew: Nat'l Parks, Muir and Native Americans
Mark David Spence has crafted a fascinating look at three national parks: Yellowstone, Glacier, and Yosemite through the filter, the lense as it were, of Native American presence.

Citizens of the United States did not always see the national parks in terms of an empty wilderness, untrodden by human footsteps. Rather, early on in the 19th century Americans, such as Catlin for example, tended to look at the wilderness in its 'natural' state, that is, its condition before European conquest, advancement, and domination. This state, therefore, included the presence of Native Americans within these three national parks. This presence took on, at times, both a temporary or a permanent character.

Although the book can read with a pace that only a historian would love, there are sufficient insights to enlighten even the armchair historian. Perhaps one of the most fascinating facets is the role that John Muir took in defining Yosemite as a region that should be absent of the Native Americans, the very people who had dwelt in the Valley for centuries. His comments could easily be construed as racist, naive, and bigoted.

I cautiously recommend this book to you, although personally I found it fascinating.

The Sculpture of David Smith
When David Smith died in 1966 he left his own personal field of dreams at his home/studio in upstate New York. Over 80 gigantic sculptures populated the grounds, pitting man against nature and daring to compete in size and moxie with the mountains around them.

After an initial flirtation with New York City, Smith retreated to the solitude of the Adirondacks. These mountains formed a somber monumental backdrop to the brooding nature of the artist. The sculptures were the landscape of his imagination, his spiritual domain, and his homage to the majesty of being human. Additionally, Smith created drawings, paintings and collages that filled his home with the living presence of art.

This is a lavish book that clearly reflects the artist's magnificent obsessions.

A Harmony of the Gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke (Calvin's New Testament Commentaries Series Volume 1)

Note: this is volume 1 of a 3 volume set
This is volume 1 of a 3 volume set, covering Matthew, Mark, Luke, and apparently also James and Jude. It appears that amazon.com doesn't have the other two volumes, so unless you are interested only in the first part of the Gospels, you may find this volume a problem. Fortunately, amazon.co.uk carries all three volumes. Look for author first word = Calvin, title word = Harmony It won't be immediately obvious that the first volume is the same as this book, because the set is jointly published by Eerdmans and Paternoster. This is volume 1 from Eerdmans; amazon UK has all three volumes from Paternoster.

An OK Review Book
If you're taking Global Studies, this book could help, but don't expect anything that'll bring you from an F to an A. There are sections on the history of each area of the world, mostly just to get an understanding of the events. This book would be most helpful when reviewing for the regents, since you get a brief overview of the whole course. In order to improve this book, I think Barrons should include a lot more review questions so the book could be helpful when reviewing for all tests during the year. Then, this book would deserve 4 or 5 stars.

useful but must be taken with a grain of salt
Somewhat disappointing for a LP guide, lots of text but not as much "meat". After travelling in the Solomons and talking with others one gets the impression that the author did quite limited travelling throughout the islands and largely relied on other's reports. The hike to Mataniko Falls is way more strenuous and dangerous than hinted. (It is still an awesome sight, especially if you're a caver) Likewise a hike along the Weather Coast is more challenging than one would gather from the text, there are places where villagers go by boat because of the vertical exposure. Makira Island is only marginal habitat for salt-water crocodiles according to a Conservation International report and not as abundant as stated in the guide. Given the dearth of information about the Solomons it is still worth buying, but prudence is recommended.

Some sleeping dogs are better left lyiing
The editors have done a very good job unearthing literature with content of some interest to gay men from centuries past, but reading a lot of this stuff confirms the notion that much writing goes out of print (if it was ever in it) for a good reason: it was no good in the first place! Nearly everything worth reading from the point of view of real literary value, contemporary interest, or entertainment in this book (roughly, 20% of its content) is in fact still in print anyway, and the rest can surely only be of interest to serious students of gay literature. On a more positive note, the editors' introductions to the various pieces are erudite and a pleasure to read.

Royal Naval Air Service 1912-1918

Royal naval Air Service 1912 - 1918
Mr. King has done a fine job of researching the aircraft flown by the RNAS from the time it disassociated itself from the fledgling Royal Flying Corps to its inclusion in the formation of the Royal Air Force. He has obviously done many hours of research on Commander C.R. Samson's 'armoured car navy' which roamed northern Belgium in late 1914 while they waited for their aircraft to appear. However, comparatively little space has been given to the magnificent work done by the RNAS fighter Squadrons (Naval 1, 8, 9 and 10) formed to aid the RFC during late 1916 and 1917. It is in these Squadrons that the story of RNAS comes alive. Within these Squadrons we find men such as Canadian Ray Collishaw, the third-highest scoring British ace with 68 victories and the Australian aces Bob Little with 47 victories and Rod Dallas with 39 victories. It is also noteworthy that there is little mention of Number 3 (Naval) Wing, the first Strategic Bombing Wing and the first unit to fly combined operations (British, Canadian, French, and American). This book gives a good over-view of the RNAS but says little of the day-to-day history of the units and men who made the RNAS Britain's prime aerial fighting force during 1914 and 1915.

Seismosaurus
An excellent book, but the material is a little outdated, considering seismosaurus is no longer considered the longest dinosaur. All in all very well written and compiled, with beautiful paintings by Mark Hallett, dinosaur artist extrodinaire. Well done.
